One of the best Kobe covers (if not a top-5 most memorable) ever.

This was the last SLAM I bought. After that I couldn’t find them anymore down here…

This was my favorite SLAM cover ever!! I remember when the jerseys that he wore on the cover came out in stores right after the mag dropped…i had to cop one…this is classic!!

  • Don

how come the adidas kicks were hidden behind the trophies? if those were shoes with checks, i’d bet they’d be shown.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBQEmmgDl9I Boing Dynasty

Hey don, have you looked at a SLAM magazine in the past 5 or so years? You know the one with a picture of a basketball player on the front, and Adidas plastered all over the back?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBQEmmgDl9I Boing Dynasty

Also im pretty sure this is Ryan’s favorite issure of SLAM evar.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

    F*ck you.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

It’s pretty high on the list, Boing. Even if I did play myself a little bit with a semi-starstruck cover story, I still have great memories of the photo shoot, which I attended in L.A. while on the way back from my honeymoon in Hawaii (yes, wifey got to shake Kobe’s hand). I remember my man Atiba knocking out the dope shoot. I remember Atiba’s friend Eric Koston, the legendary pro skater and Laker worshiper, volunteering as a photo assistant just so he could be at the shoot. And I remember a Laker rep who shall remain unnamed (no, it wasn’t Bean) hitting on another Slam representative who also attended the shoot.
And really, that is just a ridiculous cover.

    @Don:He’s wearing Nike’s…Just sayin’…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Don & Bigi: This was Kobe’s first official appearance in Nike. He hadn’t actually sign with them yet (I don’t think), but he was very much done with adidas at the time and insisted on wearing this Nike swingman uni and some sort of Nike kicks — I don’t remember which, but if anyone has the issue handy you can probably see them in one of the shots.

  • L33tSauce

    Flash for MVP

  • j-smoov 5

He should’ve got one of those Finals MVP’s.

  • http://dime dennis

BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE!!!BUT……not the greatest….if he ever wants to be mentioned a great…he has to get a championship

  • alexcee

he also wore converse on the shoot.

  • I am the walrus

I remember this issue, I found it in a local libary… and yeah he is the MVP. Not Dwayne ’cause his team is just over 50 percent and LeBron, well, KOBE IS BETTER!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

    *shaking head sadly*.

  • Eric

This photo would be impressive if Kobe had actually lead his team to three rings instead of being a suped up version of Scottie Pippen playing side kick to get those rings.

  • Randy Brown

It’s not impressive to be a ‘suped up version of Scottie Pippen’?

  • Fred34

Fabulous photo – altho it might be the last time KB or LA see any trophies – in old photos ;P

  • Manumaniac

Being a suped up version of Scottie Pippen makes you great, but being a suped up version of Michael Jordan makes you a legend. This is the last step that Kobe should climb, if he wants to be considered as one of the all-time greats (Magic, Jordan, Bird)…

  • truthteller

From what I’ve noticed, it doesn’t matter what Kobe does from this point on. People are still not going to respect him. He could lead this Lakers team to 4 more championships and average a triple double while doing it and idiots, which happen to be the majority of the people in the media and public (especially on this site) will still have a reason as to why he isn’t great. Like, “Kobe didn’t win a championship ring with a broken foot”, or Kobe didn’t win a ring playing with one hand” You may think that’s stupid but that’s the kind of nonsense I’ve been hearing and reading from “Kobe-haters” it’s just ridiculous! People actually think that LeBron is better than Kobe? Really? Wow! The hate just won’t stop.

  • truthteller

And Eric, what the hell does “suped up” mean?

  • Manumaniac

Kobe right now is better than Lebron and has achieved a lot more accomplishments than Lebron. Also, Kobe is great. Actually Kobe is the greatest basketball player on the planet Earth right now and one of the greatest of all-time. But Kobe is NOT equal to Michael Jordan and he will never surpass him, unless he LEADS a team to a championship(s). Saying all that is not stupidity. Is a fact. There is no need to hate Kobe, cause he is simply the best, no question about that. But he is not the best of all-time. At least, not yet.

  • truthteller

But that is exactly my point!!!! You just proved it! Not once did I mention MJ and already you start saying Kobe is not greater than MJ! I never said that. And a lot of so called “Kobe riders” don’t say that too. All you really ever hear is that, “Kobe is the next MJ” or Kobe is the closest thing to MJ we’ve got.” I’ve even heard, “Kobe is this generation’s MJ” These are all TRUE statements! But you guys just can’t accept that! This is why we call you Kobe haters! people just can’t accept the fact that anybody can come close to their beloved MJ! You call people Kobe riders, right? You and people like you are “MJ riders!” Is Kobe perfect? Hell no! Was MJ perfect? The MJ riders think he was!

  • Manumaniac

First of all I’m not a Kobe hater. I love this guy’s game and to consider him (I repeat) the greatest player on Earth right now, doesn’t seem like “Kobe-hating” after all, does it? Also, you didn’t get me at all. I believe that Kobe has the quality to become one of the all-time bests and I mention Michael Jordan’s name only because MJ is in FACT the all-time greatest. Comparing these two guys is unavoidable, you know…
Also, I want to inform you that by saying that “Kobe is the next MJ”, “Kobe is the closest thing to MJ we’ve got”, “Kobe is this generation’s MJ”, means that yourself believe that Kobe is chasing Michael Jordan’s legend. Once you start not considering Kobe as “the next MJ” but as “KOBE BRYANT himself”, that will mean that KB24 has achieved a whole lot different level of his own in basketball history. Personally, I’d love to see Kobe surpassing MJ and he will do that only if he LEADS his team to a championship(s).

  • Esco

Kobe has achieved more than LeBron, yes. Kobe has also played 7 more years professionally than LeBron. People should not even debate that. When LeBron gets to 13 years in the L, then we can start to compare and see how he holds up. You know what? Fuc|{ comparing them. Just sit back and enjoy.

  • Halo

    It will change this year!

  • truthteller

“Kobe has achieved more than LeBron, yes. Kobe has also played 7 more years professionally than LeBron. People should not even debate that. When LeBron gets to 13 years in the L, then we can start to compare and see how he holds up. You know what? Fuc|{ comparing them. Just sit back and enjoy.”

I feel you! Now try telling that to the media and the public!

  • truthteller

The reason why people hate on kobe is because they keep compating him to MJ! I’m saying, “Stop comparing Kobe to MJ and just look at his skill level and accomplishments!” People just can’t do it! The more you keep comoparing Kobe to MJ, the more you realise he’s not MJ! You know why? Because nobody’s MJ! But just because he’s not MJ doesn’t mean that he’s a legend in his own right! People and maybe not you but people take away from Kobe’s greatness because of this. This is all I’m saying.

  • nate james

they are showing you this to help him get mvp praise duh.
he just wants to say no mattter what lebron or dwade or anyone does. he has more rings than you.

  • Igor

This year Kobe winning an other title, to shut ya all up jealous haters, who don respect Kob’s talent!!!

  • Manumaniac

No reason to argue with you, I understand what you are saying. Anyway, comparisons are part of the game you know. People used to compare Kareem to Wilt, Magic to Big O e.t.c. It’s all part of the game, you know. Even MJ himself was compared to Doctor J. That’s all part of the game. Think about it this way: if Kobe wasn’t so great, he wouldn’t be compared to MJ. And if Lebron wasn’t so great, he wouldn’t be compared to Kobe. All I’m saying is this: Kobe has achieved many great thing and hopefully he will achieve even more in the future. I’m just looking forward for the day we will be talking about the “next Kobe” instead of the “next MJ”. That’s all.

  • donlaker

my bowling trophies dont compare, and he might win another ring if he is smart enough to fall back and mimic mj

  • truthteller

I feel you Manumaniac. But the day that other players are compared to Kobe will never come because in order for that to happen, Kobe would have to be considered the absolute best! And nobody, not the media or the public are willing to do that!

  • L33tSauce

If you want to be technical, Iverson was more like Jordan than anyone in the sense he plays nothing like him. Jordan’s game was unique. He played his own way and many, many followed. In Iverson’s respect, he was the first at what he does a man under 6’0 going to the rim the way he did.

  • L33tSauce

And Lebron gives out 28.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and while shooting 49% from the field. Kobe gives his team 27.8 PPG with 4.9 assists and 5.4 boards a game on 47% shooting. Take the stats away, look at their impact on their teams. Lebron creates the spacing needed to make people like Delonte West and Wally score points. Lebron draws the eyes of all 5 defenders from the other team, getting big men lik Z and mr. funny hair the ball. Lebron pulls off the same record with a less talented team than Kobe’s. Lebron James right now is hands down better that Kobe. And Wade is more valuable to his team then any of them. FLASH FOR MVP!!!

  • truthteller

L33tSause, please save us the stats bulls#$%6 okay? It just proves that you don’t have the intelligence to prove anything.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I think Nash should get his third MVP.

  • Whitt-ness

lmao @ Jukai…. im pullin for dirk!

  • truthteller

And I should kick you in the forehead with back of my heel!

  • http://fdklf.com Jukai

I hope they’re the recycled-garbage shoes. You know, the ones that Nash produces.

  • Jackie Moon

    Kobe is good.

  • Nate James

thats the look he has on his face when he r@pes white women too.

  • Manumaniac

Lebron is a unique talent and has all the skills and the potential to become the greatest basketball player of all time. The same goes for Kobe since he has at least 5 years to play on the level he is right now. At the moment, Kobe compared to Lebron he is better, cause he’s got 3 championships, one MVP trophy, 3 NBA All Star Game MVP trophies and of course that 81 point game against Toronto which is hard enough to forget. Also Lebron shares the same record with Kobe, but there is a big difference: the Cavs are playing in the Eastern Conference.

  • Manumaniac

You should also consider Elton Brand, Jermaine O’Neal, Gilbert Arenas, Shawn Marion and Peja Stojakovic as All NBA selections again.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

It’ll be four after this season E-boy, you d-bag.

  • http://slam Bigbeats’96

Hey Looking back on SLAM 66 Im loving the kobe cover “Got Trophies” more now then when i first saw it more than five years ago. This picture just goes to show this guy’s drive and hunger hasn’t changed since he won his first chip back in 2000 all the way till now. He is the best in the game no one else has the heart or killer instinct of the mamba. He has dominated the decade. Laker repeat in ’09-10 why cause kobe wants to be the first to five.

  • http://Slam Jasmine

Kobe your young I want that magazine.
