Enough With the Scenarios Already!

by Ryne Nelson

Trying to predict the Western Conference’s final rankings is a good recipe for insanity. Never in the history of the current Playoff format has the final night of the NBA season mattered this much. Four teams can land the No. 3 seed. Three can land the No. 4 and 5 spots. The Rockets, enigmatic as ever, can be No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5 after tonight.

NBA.com just posted an excellent breakdown of all the possible scenarios for the Western Conference standings. Other than the Lakers and Jazz who are locked in for a 1-8 matchup, the other three series out west are up for grabs. No need to get out your graphing calculator, the League kindly saved us all the technicalities. But, unfortunately, they can’t save us any headaches.

How will the final seeds lock up? Your guess is as good as mine.

Western Conference seeds

2. Denver or Houston
3. Denver, Houston, Portland, or San Antonio
4. Houston, Portland, or San Antonio
5. Houston, Portland, or San Antonio
6. New Orleans or Dallas
7. New Orleans or Dallas

Note: CAPS locked into seeding.

Western Conference scenarios

Denver will be seeded:

• #2 if Nuggets win OR Rockets lose

• #3 if Nuggets lose and Rockets win

Houston will be seeded:

• #2 if Rockets win and Nuggets lose

• #3 if Rockets win and Nuggets win OR if Spurs and Blazers both lose.

• #4 if Rockets lose and either the Spurs or Blazers win (but not both)

• #5 if Rockets lose and Spurs and Blazers both win.

Portland will be seeded:

• #3 if Blazers win and Rockets and Spurs both lose.

• #4 if Blazers win and either Rockets or Spurs win (or both win) OR if Blazers and Spurs both lose.

• #5 if Blazers lose and Spurs win.

San Antonio will be seeded:

• #3 if Spurs win and Rockets lose.

• #4 if Spurs and Rockets both win and Blazers lose.

• #5 if Spurs lose OR if Rockets and Blazers both win.

New Orleans will be seeded:

• #6 if Hornets win OR if Mavericks lose.

• #7 if Hornets lose and Mavericks win.

Dallas will be seeded:

• #6 if Mavericks win and Hornets lose.

• #7 if Hornets win OR Mavericks lose.

Never did understand seeding’s possiblities and I ‘m not going to try now. How do they even come up with crazy scenario’s?

  • PJ

i think i’ll just wait till tonight when its official then go through all that

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Plus, if the Pistons win tonight and the Sixers lose, the Pistons would have the same record as them and since they have the tie breaker, they’d be in the 7th seed.
    *head explodes*

Ryne’s job will be much easier once this is resolved. Playoff writers, get ready!

I can’t wait to find out who gets Phoenix.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq al Haydar

I understand that if Houston wins tonight, the Mavs end up with the 7 seed and Flo Rida wins a daytime Emmy.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

wow, didn’t Lang write about not wanting his Hawks to play the 6ers just a little earlier? so they went from possible 5th seed to possible 8th? Anton is right, *head explodes*
btw, Anton, who do the Cavs prefer to face? 6ers or pistons? my guess is “bring it on!”

    Everybody wants to avoid Barcelona.

btw, i love that the headline is hating on the body of the column. oh the irony.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

We don’t care, kenobi. It’s a well known fact whoever’s the 8th seed is getting a well-placed Cavectomy.

I can’t wait to find out who gets Charlotte.

  • whooo!

this is awesomeness. i mean, ppl always complain that the last few games of the season are miserable cuz nobody is playing their stars and it’s meaningless games of scrubs. what could be better than building suspense till the very last game to know how playoffs look? basically, EVERY GAME matters. isn’t that the goal? if you guys want meaningless games, there’s bound to be a couple, but i think it’s actually good to have these type of crazy situations.

  • http://www.broy7.com/roy/index nate the great

none of this matters.. blazers will win the championship this year.

  • DJR

Based on where the Blazers are at the moment I’d be surprised if they make it out of the first round – they’re looking at the Spurs!! Way too much playoff experience for POR. My money is on a Lakers v Cavs finals series and I think it will be decided by how good Bynum and Odom play. If they’re on – Lakers in 6.

  • Myung

All I know is Ike Diogu is the best player of the last 2 games on the NBA season.

nate, what’d I tell you about smoking before posting?

WOOOOOHOOOO! YESSSSS! Dallas just sidestepped Denver by beating Houston. It’s the classic in round one, Mavs vs. Spurs. If Gino were playing, i’d be shaking in my boots, but Dallas CAN beat these current Spurs. Tony shall get his, but he can’t score AND limit Barea/Jet/Kidd at the same time. Dirk does not fear ANY of the Spurs defenders (Bruise Bowen? Puhleeze) and if they put Timmy on him for extended periods with his weakening knees, matchup hell. Gooden, Finley and Mason might make some noise, but this is a good matchup for the Mavs. Just one thing Rick… FREE BRANDON BASS, damnit! Maxiell-West would be more than a handfull for Gooden etc.

  • Matt D

    Lakers-Jazz: LA in 5
    Nuggets-Hornets: Denver in 6
    Spurs-Mavs: Dallas in 7 (ala 2006)
Blazers-Rockets: Whoever has home court in 7

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero dma

how does portland get 4th and not 3rd? didnt nba change last year where division winner gets at worst 4th place? blazers and spurs end with same record. blazers won the series 3-1..

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

on the flip side, because houston lost that game, they lose homecourt. but more important than that, i think the blazers match up very well with rockets. another first round exit.
and like Dark said, i think Mavs will advance.

  • http://slamonline.com Walt Williams

Ike Diogu bullyed Nene around like it was the thing to do

Enough with senarios. Now read this post all about senarios.

  • Blinguo

Shaq to Dallas unless D.Stern Wins or Cuban think Shaq = Wins after a big team blowup/reassemble.
Iverson to BETCATS unless he finds a better fit and still wants a chance to Win the ‘chip, without being the key, engine running the team.
Kobe wins if Pau and Lamar are more serious than the LeBroninites and their all over the court antics. They’ve screwed around soo much with these things they’ve seemed like they’ve already won the championship mid season or something, hard to think they’ll be dead serious and selectively change upon playoff weekend time. Lakers tend to do it during the routs/blowouts as well. Lets see if the Cavs or Lakers know to turn off the posing until podium time.

Dalls will upset till they meet Lakers in WC finals. Detroit will get bundled out of the first round and the Deeeetroit pistons as you once knew them will cease to exist (haven’t they already..?!). I’m thinking that Miami could take ATL in six games but you never can be sure – Atlanta look crazy hungry right now, they pushed the Celtics to seven last year – I’m thinking they could get to seven against Miami because they have homecourt (lets call it a game seven plus 3 overtimes!!!) Get Ready to TiVO peeps.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Whats the bet we see the BIG SHAQTUS at a few Dallas home games…?

  • ab_40

    wow Candice… really?

  • Twinparadox

whatever…i mean this is crazy and looks fun as hell but it just determines the team that loses to the Cleveland Lebron James’ in 6 games
haha. nah for real…this year has been as fun as watching the Showtime lakers play

  • Twinparadox

Nate, u gotta tell me where u get whatever u’re smokin…

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

    Cavs in 4,
    Celts in 6,
    Magic in 7,
Coin-toss in 7, (50,5% Heat , 49,5% Hawks because of Wade in a game 7 situation – bujt really to close to call)
    Lakers in 6,
    Nuggets in 7,
    Mavs in 7,
    Blazers in 6,

I think Me and Darksaber could both agree that the Mavs/Spurs rivalry is the best rivalry in the league. It will be one of the best series in the playoffs.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

i am so proud at how the Mavs have played the last 3 weeks. And even the slam community (that usually isn’t too kind to Dirk and his crew) is even agreeing that they may take round 1 against the still dangerous but creaky Spurs. This site has some knowledgeable people on it who can change their minds depending on the situation. Me so happy!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

And the core of both teams have had memorable meetings, so this is gonna be a chippy series! Key players? Josh Howard and Tim Duncan.

  • http://www.foxwoodhotelcasino.com FoxWoodHotelCasino

    that’s it.

  • Josh D

Spurs beat Mavs in six they may have lost Manu but they’ve won four straight, look out Mavs!

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The only scenario I like has Busta Rhymes in it.

  • http://www.basketballjerseyworld.com nba-jersey-king

I dont know how anyone can pick the Hawks against the Heat… dont get me wrong, the Hawks are good, but they are running into a Heat team with a Wade who is angry and looking for redemption! Heat will cream the Hawks
