Hall Announces Class of 2009

It’s hard to image the selection committee arguing over the five to be inducted this year: “[Michael] Jordan was elected to the class of 2009 Monday with David Robinson, John Stockton, Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer. The announcement was made in Detroit, site of the men’s Final Four. Induction is Sept. 10-12 in Springfield, Mass., home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.”

How awesome is it that Jerry and John get to go in together?

  • Tuomas Posted: Apr.6 at 12:03 pm
Phew, nothing comparable to Dick Vitale this year. Still. Artis. Gilmore.

  • Roy Posted: Apr.6 at 12:18 pm
Money in the HOF is long overdue. Glad he’s gonna be a part of the upcoming 2009 class. John Stockton and David Robinson also deserve to be there, too. :D

Hell, they should name the award after MJ.

  • Jumpman3224 Posted: Apr.6 at 12:27 pm
Congrats to those 5! They really deserved it. I wonder if MJ will be reminding Stockton and Sloan back stage that he beat them twice in the finals. I hope Cooper and King can get in sooner or later.

This is such a great class……congrats to all these most deserving picks. Also…..since the SLAM site is running without much new content today…..click my name to read an outstanding interview with SLAMOnline Editor In Chief,Ryne Nelson. (I hate promoting the blog here…..but it is SLAM related)

“Is Bernard King gonna have to choke a b*tch?”

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Apr.6 at 12:50 pm
myles, i was going to say something to that effect.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.6 at 1:03 pm
Dennis Johnson, too, damn. The voters are such haters.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Apr.6 at 1:07 pm
Hey NBA, you could learn something from MLB and the NFL. Get your own Hall of Fame.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.6 at 1:19 pm
And hey Chris Mullin, so sorry, but you’re no Drazen Dalipagic.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.6 at 1:22 pm
    Or even Arnie Risen.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Apr.6 at 1:24 pm
This list would be better with eight more coaches.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.6 at 1:35 pm
Preferably some 95-year-old women’s coaches from Uzbekistan. There have to be a few that haven’t been inducted yet.

  • Mendel Posted: Apr.6 at 1:42 pm
    Who’s Micheal Jordan?

  • Peach B. Posted: Apr.6 at 1:49 pm
Good look on the C. Vivian Stringer pick. But I thought for sure Cooper was a lock. All worthy candidates tho.

  • bballrehab Posted: Apr.6 at 2:13 pm
What are the odds of Stockton’s suit being the dopest on that day?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.6 at 2:20 pm
He’ll probably wear a polo shirt and off-brand khakis.

  • Mr. Mackey Posted: Apr.6 at 2:22 pm
HEY, now russell, it’s not nice to pick on someone just because their clothes are different, mmmmmmmkay?

  • truthteller Posted: Apr.6 at 2:31 pm
My boy Scoop wrote an article for Page 2 of ESPN saying that MJ should be inducted all by himself so as not to upstage the other inductees because of what he meant to the game. What do ya’ll think about that?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.6 at 2:54 pm
Was Bill Russell inducted by himself? Was Wilt Chamberlain? Was Oscar Robertson? That’s what I thought.

  • bballrehab Posted: Apr.6 at 2:55 pm
Ahah, that’s right, a polo shirt with off-brand khakis AND boat shoes.

Guess this is one assist Stockton couldn’t pass to Karl.

  • B. Long Posted: Apr.6 at 2:59 pm
I thought that Stockton was still pulling in that “Dockers” endorsment loot?

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.6 at 3:05 pm
Jordan, Admiral, Stockton and Jerry Sloan. I am so happy right now, literally beaming with the good vibes. Some of my 90′s Ballheroes right there.

  • the baconator Posted: Apr.6 at 3:12 pm
@Mendel: Some baseball player; he wasn’t all that good

  • wilz Posted: Apr.6 at 3:13 pm
    assh0les Uzbekistan!! hahah

  • Mendel Posted: Apr.6 at 3:36 pm
Yeah its funny some baseball player is in the basketball Hall of Fame. I think that Michael Jordan guy should be in the baseball hall of fame for the most recognized player who sucked.

  • truthteller Posted: Apr.6 at 3:45 pm
    Russ,
I feel you. That’s what I thought when I read the article. I know he’s from Chicago and he’s trying to represent the city and MJ was great but I think he took this one just a tad too far. I just wanted to see what your thoughts were. We still love Scoop though.

  • EC Posted: Apr.6 at 4:21 pm
in other news Bernard King was seen in Springfield, Ma wearing his Dennis Johnson Throwback….

  • Allenp Posted: Apr.6 at 5:09 pm
    Who is Bernard King?

  • truthteller Posted: Apr.6 at 5:47 pm
    Russ,
I see what Scoop’s saying though. On all the sports channels and magazines and papers, they are making it seem like MJ is the only guy getting inducted! They ahave segments for MJ and Mj alone! I feel you and I see your argument but from what I’ve been seeing and reading lately, Scoop may have a point…

  • BETCATS Posted: Apr.6 at 9:08 pm
seeing that i am the Micheal Jordan of commenting i believe that by the rules, i too am in the Hall of Fame now.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.6 at 10:27 pm
gawd, BET. Btw, the Wayne Brady line from Chappelle used for Bernard King earlier? Made me laugh so hard, i cried. Genius.

  • chintao Posted: Apr.7 at 12:10 am
