Jerry Sloan: Not Looking Forward to Series with Lakers

by Marcel Mutoni

Thanks to a relatively easy 13-point win last night, the Lakers` opponent in the opening round of the Playoffs was confirmed: the Utah Jazz. The eighth-seeded Jazz are obviously facing an uphill battle, and not too many (sane) people expect them to pull off the upset, least of all their own coach.

Ol` Jerry, in his postgame comments to the press corps, didn`t sound too enthused about the upcoming postseason matchup. The Salt Lake Tribune reports:

“We didn’t give them much of battle,” Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said, “and knowing that we’re going to have to play them again, it looks pretty bleak. Hate to say that, but it’s one of those things. But that’s why it’s an interesting game. We’re going to have to play it.”

Sloan wasn`t alone in feeling this way; his players pretty much felt the exact same way about what`s about to go down, starting on Sunday.

I apologized before sharing the 3-47 all-time record of No. 8 seeds with Kyle Korver and he answered with no small amount of sarcasm: “I mean, No. 8 seeds are supposed to lose. That’s why it’s 1 vs. 8. But three teams did win. Someday there’s going to be a fourth.” What gives Korver encouragement?

“I mean, we just got beat, so I’m not going to sit here and be like, ‘We’ve got them.’ It’s not like we have that attitude,” Korver said. “We know them well. We’ve played against them a lot now. I think the series last year will probably help us out for this year.”

I fu*king hate both these teams.
    Utah especially. F8ck the Jazz.
Hopefully they beat the bejezus out of each-other and soften themselves up for the semi’s.

first. also, the lakers might be in for another sweep to start the playoffs… the jazz havent been looking so good, and LA has a massive advantage up front v. bynum and gasol.

  • Herfdawg

    v. = with

  • Michael

god i would love to see the lakers flame out against the jazz. probably wont happen, but the reaction around here would be priceless

  • Ken

It’d be nice to see the Jazz push this to 6 games, just to soften up the Lakers for future opponents.

don’t they have to start kirilenko and have him and brewer taking turns harassing kobe? for them to be competitive they need basically everything to go right : 1) deron has to abuse fisher and farmar 2) kirilenko and brewer have to somewhat slow down kobe a little 3) memo needs to make a lot of jumpers to bring out pau and bynum. i just don’t see those three things happening. at all.

  • Michael

@Z, the first one will happen

  • Jake

The Lakers are way too deep this year to be beat in my opinion.Just like the Celtics were last year. When you have 10 men strong coming to play every night, even if the bench isn’t performing all that well as is the case with the Lakers it’s very tiring for a team that only plays 8 men consistently.

Wow, and I really thought the Jazz would pull together and make it to at least the second round… I dont anymore

I think the Jazz just don’t match up well with the Lakers. Pau Gasol in particular, who had a very good series against them and Denver, but didn’t do so well against the Spurs and Boston. To beat a Pau’s tall wispiness you need… tall muscle, which the Spurs and Celtics have in Duncan or KG’s goons. Not sub-7-feet muscle / wispiness, which describes the entire Jazz frontcourt.

talks earlier this year was the jazz were going to be strong.
i would put money down the jazz win the first game.
then the lakers win the next 3, then somehow the jazz get another.
if you guys are talking about the celtics, then remember every series went to game 7.
and guys matt harpring will take kobe anyday.
but it doesnt matter about these two teams, its all about the blazers.

Jerry just doesn’t want to take all those bus rides to Minneapolis.

Russ – ok I’m slow, why “Minneapolis” ?

“if you guys are talking about the celtics, then remember every series went to game 7.”

Eh? They beat Detroit in 6 and won the Finals in 6.

nate, you should light up the rocks after you hit “submit comment”, not after your first sentence.

  • underdog

Sadly Boozer didn’t manage to find his game after his last injury.

Jerry Sloan is conceding defeat beforehand? In public? Anyone else find this behavior suspect? Jerry effing Sloan? Yeahhh right! And who cares what Kutcher Jr. Has to say in this?

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Anyone notice how the Jazz are regressing? 2007: Conference finals. 2008: Second round. 2009: First Round (most likely). 2010: ?

The Jazz are playing possum, b*tch pleeze.

  • Michael

Just a bad matchup for the Jazz. They reallt are awful defensivley. Last year Kobe averaged 33 7 and 7 in that series, I can see the same thing happening again this year.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

The Lakeshow is red hot. Stop hating. If you do hate, say who you’re rooting for, so when they get beat by the Lakers, you can do like fiends in rehab, and pipe down.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

    And Fred34, really?

  • bballrehab

It’s gonna be a sweep; cool for Phil cause I’ve been told he doesn’t like going to the New Orleans.

  • vtrobot

They have looked horrible lately, but that’s a pretty deep and talented Jazz team. They just seem really out of sync. Who knows, they could get it together and give the Lakeshow a series. I think they’ve been acting like Pierce in the wheelchair the whole season long. Everyone’s been fooled. Zee! I would like to see the Celts win and I would like them to beat the Lakepeople in the Finals.

  • tenorca

Is it me, or are the Jazz legitimately soft for the first time in a while? Can’t beat the Lakers unless you rough ‘em up.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

in the last month or so, i was thinking if lakers play the mavs it’d definitely be a sweep, but jazz should be able to get a game (maybe even 2) in Utah because of their stella home play. however jazz had been terrible lately. Dwill is finally rounding into form, but the rest of the team is nowhere to be found. AK47 has probably been the most disappointing Jazz, who regressed a lot the last 2 years (ever since he “shot to fame” when the “one free pass per year” from his wife got in the news.
in conclusion, i think utah should be able to make it a 5 game series, because their 8-9 rotation players are (theoretically) all very good. though obviously the roster is still a notch below Lakers, otherwise we wouldn’t have this discussion.

  • Epsilon Nupe

The comment about Boozer not finding his game is right. They Jazz’s front court is going get blazed by Pau and Bynum. Kobe probably wont even have to work to hard in this series

  • http://myspace.com/2grownup2beshownup Jack

I hope they give each other hell and soften the Lakers up. And you know the Jazz have no chance, apart from the fact that they suck when compared to the Lakers, but the refs wouldn’t give them a chance anyway. You know that DS either wants a Celts-Lakers rematch, or a Kobe-LeBron matchup, and you bet the refs have been told.

    ABOUT THE “Jazz regressing scenario”…
Wheres Bryon Russell, Adam Keefe and Greg O-Tag when you need them…?

  • bulldog

LMAO – Jerry Sloan trying to pull a Rope-a-dope strategy. Ain’t gonna work – Lakers will steamroll right through them and Gasol and Bynum will put on a big man clinic. And after the blowout wins, everyone will get their swerve on partying at that notoriously wild Utah night life and legendary Jazz music so characteristic of the state of Utah.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    …and marry more women.

  • Blinguo

2 extra travel days for Utah like they said a bunch during the broadcast stand out. No round 2 for Deron Williams, sorry Ryne. His team isn’t as depleted as Chris Paul’s but they’re playing like it on this ‘enter the playoffs on a long losing streak.’ Paul has make-shift, 3rd option bench role players around him going into the playoffs. So probably no 2nd round for him and the Hornets either. Ryne gets a push and continuance on that All world PG debate.

  • Harlem_World

No sweep. Jazz will win at least one at home. Deron is going to be a major problem. Obviously Lakers win, but it won’t be as easy as people are saying. Withy Bynum out, the Lakers are vulnerable on the front line, as seen in the finals last year. What? He’s back? For real?…OK, move on…nothing to see here…
