Did Derrick Rose Cheat on His SAT?

That’s what D-Rose and the University of Memphis are being accused of: “The University of Memphis is responding to an NCAA notice of allegations charging the men’s basketball program with major violations during the 2007-08 season under John Calipari. The allegations include ‘knowing fraudulence or misconduct’ on an SAT exam by a player on the 2007-08 team. The NCAA alleged the prospective player became eligible after an ‘unknown individual’ completed his SAT. The player, said the NCAA, ‘subsequently competed for the men’s basketball team through the 2007-08 season, which included his participation in the 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.’ The player’s name was redacted in the report, obtained by The Commercial Appeal on Wednesday through the Freedom of Information Act, because of privacy laws. The player has subsequently denied the charge, according to university personnel. The only player on the roster who competed only during that season was Derrick Rose, who subsequently was the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft last June.”

    You stay classy, John Calipari.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

That was a low ball move. What can they do now?

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

I think twelve Celtics players and one Doc Rivers could testify in court that Derrick Rose isn’t stupid, dumb or unintelligent…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/fear/ Freedom Fries

This is relevant because . . . ??? Can they just admit that NCAA sports=semi pro and be done with it once and for all? It’s not like they cared about his SAT’s then, why on earth start now?

  • http://www.ihatelebron.com nate the great

    hahaha @Laumol.

  • Great Balls O’Fire

This is on coach, not Rose.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

This is the NCAA, not Rose.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Sooooooo, Derrick Rose didn’t realize someone else took his SAT? “Hey, I thought he was me!” I hate the NCAA (and John Calipari) as much as the next guy, but I think the “student” athlete has to take some of the blame, here.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Did Michael Beasley underperform on his SAT?

  • Shawn

So, are you saying that the coach took the SAT for Rose? Explain to me how the coach is to blame but not the player who was actually the person (and only person) responsible for taking the test.

  • Candice

If someone took Rose test for him that means the people administrating the SAT would have had to be in on it. I remember when I took my SAT, you couldn’t sit close enough to attempt to cheat let alone talk. You couldn’t even put things on your desk.

  • niQ

it’s been so long and NOW they figure this out? HOW did they even find this out? someone be snitchin’

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

In Rose’s defense, he was just trying to get the Perfect Score on the exam.

  • john

Actually the charge is that Rose had someone take his SAT for him. There is no charge of intuitional problems nor are there any charges against any staff.

The charge is that Rose cheated and it does not matter if Memphis knew or not. Memphis may be punished for a players actions that it did not know about.

According to a story by Michael O’Brien of the Chicago Sun Times, Luther Topps was Derrick Rose’s club coach in Chicago.
Topps told the Sun Times that he’s known about the NCAA investigation for about three weeks and that the NCAA had threatened Rose’s former high school teammate Tim Flowers with a loss of eligibility if he didn’t agree to an interview.

PS: Memphis has not been charged with are recruiting violations. That is an institutional charge and/or specific staff are sited. No staff is sited in the charges.

Hey, I sh!t on the NCAA as much as anybody but they’re not at fault here. You shouldn’t represent the Univeristy of Memphis in an athletic event if you’re not qualified to enroll at the University of Memphis. That’s pretty straightforward. Shawn, the coach is to blame because he simply let it happen. I’d like to believe that some coaches out there try to win while staying in the rules. Cap has not been known for that, to say the least. It is also ABSOLUTELY on Rose. Cheating is bad, duh. (Of course, if the case is dismissed then I take back everything)

  • tealish

Haha, he’s a great player but if you’ve ever heard him talk in a post-game or something, you shouldn’t be too surprised at this.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Justin Walsh

guys, there’s also paying 2 grand for an athletes associate. For the record, Calipari could be the first coach ever to have TWO final four’s by TWO different teams vacated. That’s a serious problem. Also, if you think Calipari didn’t know, you are literally an idiot. Calipari is probably the most connected, controlling coach in the country. Don’t believe me? Find out the whole story on the John Wall recruitment. Names to remember: Brian Clifton, John Calipari, John Wall. Administrations to remember: Word of God Academy, Kentucky, World Wide Wes. If you know how much pull Calipari had with that situation, you would not sit here and say “Not coaches fault Derrick did that, that’s just a player doing it.” In a word: no.

  • http://www.manutd.com/ Z

Justin, how about both? Derrick AND Calipari.

  • http://www.nba.com JE

@Russ: If Derrick Rose did in fact take a version of the SAT (which in all likelihood, he did), how would he know the score that was given to him wasn’t his actual score?

  • James Wilson

Derrick Rose didn’t cheat on his SAT if yall say he did it yall better stop

  • tigerfan123

It is easy to cheat on the SAT/ACT. You have to only have an ID with the picture of the person taking the test and the name of the student
. People go to great measures to get this done. It happens ALL the time for these athletes and not just BB and FB players. Any program that is in the national spot light needs to have a clean program because rumors will always be sent to the NCAA. Derrick’s brother, is his number one problem. I would not put it past his brother to set something up and Derrick not know,Derrick was probably just doing what he was told. Derrick/his brother would know his score because you have to go online and look it up. I’m sure the score needed was well known to everyone in his group. Memphis would not have known there was a problem because they would have recieved the scores officially from SAT and would have not questioned them if nothing was flagged at the time. NCAA cleared Derrick as a qualifer then took it back when all this came to light after the season. It’s not Memphis or Coach Cal. It just sucks that Memphis will be punished for what they had no control in this aspect.

cant argue with the ncaa here. if true, derrick rose is not only a dumbass, but a cheating dumbass.

  • Trey

You guys do realize these are just accusations, right? Let’s wait for actual facts first. Rose has already denied it

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I want to know what actual punishments are handed out here…? I suppose college teams cant compete in the NCAA season…? What about the guy who was meant to be sitting the SAT? I’m confused by this revelation:

    PLEASE EXPLAIN.
    ^_^

  • Regina

Derrick Rose didn’t cheat on his SAT test. What ever happened to the ACT test. I don’t care what the outcome is, all I know is that Chi-Town standing behind D-Rose no matter what.

  • Thornin Meass

    Mandatory tat, “cheater”.
Hey, the guy cheated, he knew it, no excuses. When the playbook was drive the lane for 45 minutes every game, no shot, pass, you knew the playbook was short.
Rose denied it, your are kidding? How do we know he understands, “denied”. He might of thought it meant “I did need”.
Punishment, good old free enterprise system, no ad money for about two years, McDonalds will pull that mug off their cups in 48 hours.
Sure, feel sorry for him, but he cheated and it will stick.

  • ka

heh, i’d totally yell S-A-Ts at derricks away games.

  • Alan

I always wanted an “unknown individual” to pass my exams 2!!

  • wall ball

Cheating has gone on before Derrick Rose and it probably is going on now as I’m writing this statement. We can look at individuals who are taught to compete at a high level and place blame on them when they are caught. Or maybe, just for once, we can look at the system of capitalism as it is and question the many ills and malicious opportunities it enables. Capitalism is the legalization of greed, plunder and competition. At 17 years old and especially coming from the purposely dumbed down Chicago Public school system, he did not control his environment. The coaches saw a family who depended on Derrick Rose’s basketball abilities to take them to the next level. Derrick Rose dreamed of being in the NBA and he did whatever he needed to do in order to get there. He could have gone straight from high school if the rules were different. Thats just like an R&B singer who dreams of winning a Grammy and she sleeps her way to the top. Everyone in and around sports knows that these happenings take place. Every player, every announcer that once played the sport, understands the system and many feel like the collegiate players should be paid. The best schools in college every year spend the most on their players. I’m not saying Derrick Rose doesn’t deserve any blame but he didn’t create the system. The system will be here after he is gone. The system produced the likes of Derrick Rose,Kwame Brown, Leon Smith and Eddy Curry. We all know if we’re not at the top pulling the strings, we’re simply pawns in someone else’s game

  • Thornin Meass

    wall ball?

Maybe you would like the communist system? There is no better place to be man, thats it. There aren’t any long lines of people trying to get into these countries, no tunnels going into China, go check them out, you may love it, but it doesn’t get any better than what you have (or the freedom to even write your comments like we have, right on this board).

  • wall ball

Whoa…attack my opinion with another opinion how classic is this? All systems where one minority group rules over another and use any mechanism to do so, is wrong. I could care less what you call it. Thornin, whats the difference between feudalism and colonialism? Whats the difference between colonialism and mercantilism? Whats the difference between mercantilism and capitalism? Whats the difference between capitalism and fascism? The answer is nothing is the difference! Whats the difference between apartheid and jim crow? Nothing! The names are different! Thats it! Capitalism is the only economic system in the world based on competition. If it were not for communism’s labor movement, you wouldn’t be working your 8 hour days Thornin! Besides, my focus was about Derrick Rose being pulled in just like you’ve been pulled in if you can’t honestly and intelligently identify the ills of a system that has brought harm to millions of people. If it makes you feel proud or better to celebrate that, so be it….America boastly broadcasts itself to the world as the land of the free and immense opportunity. There are advantages here but their are also disadvantages. Next you’ll tell mje to go somewhere else Thornin…But as a citizen, I’m just gonna exercise my rights for freedom of speech and expression Thorn

Hello to all ! Greetings From Poland ! Very nice website.

  • Kel

Of course he’s dumb, have you ever heard him speak? He failed the ACT 3 times in Chicago, yet miraculously achieved a sufficient score on his SAT in Detroit? Yeah right. It’s absolutely on him, and everyone who enabled it. It’s dishonest, low, and disgusting. I don’t care if it’s commonplace. These guys should have to go to college for four years before making millions of dollars they don’t deserve before playing a kid’s game for a living. At least then they can be somewhat cognizant citizens. It’s only fair, everybody else besides entertainers have to actually contribute to society to make a living, and one that isn’t nearly as luxurious. The term student-athlete should have relevance. I’ll never support someone who is low enough to cheat that way. What’s more, his high school Ds were upped to Cs. He obviously didn’t care about his education and just basketball. That’s why he’s as dumb as a sack of bricks.
