Final Answer

Final cover?

Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson

Well, the AI experiment in Detroit was short-lived and messy, and we’re not sure that it was entirely Iverson’s fault. We know there’s no point in placing blame after a divorce. Sh*t just happens. And it shouldn’t matter to you at this point anyway. AI, in the right environment, can still Answer the call.—Ryne Nelson

Ya’ll will give him one more guanteed!!

  • Jess

very well said Ryne. AI will be back better than ever. I hope he takes all this trash talk and uses it a fuel when he comes back next season (wherever that may be) and then everyone can realize that what happened in detroit wasnt his fault and that they must be crazy for questioning the answer.

  • Big Marv

    Final cover my a#%$#%!
Bubba and Slam are family. Blood is thicker than water. There will be another AI cover.
    Thats a caransheed!!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Ugh, please no more AI until he actually plays a game again…seriously, I’m sick of hearing about him.

  • john

    my dawg iverson still raw

  • ugly_fish

AI hasn’t deserved a cover since 2001. the only justification for putting him on the cover is:
    a. he “moves” magazines (sales)
    b. because he got traded
and reebok make the ugliest shoes.

Allen Iverson flat out sucks! He had all the convincing words saying he wanted to bring the title for Detroit but had not shown the effort to do so. He played the sloppiest deffense I ever had seen and in big minutes didnt give us any scoring or assists. I say Allen Iverson will never get a cover or a title in the rest of his career. AI is hated in Detroit forever!

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

lol…easy donone…He sure didn’t look like “the sh1t” this season. You better wait for your boy to put up some numbers next season before you go talkin like that. I think he’ll do ok next season, but he’s clearly not the player he used to be. He’s lost a step and he’s relying on his inconsistent jump shot more than ever. He can’t beat people/finish at the basket like he used to…not to take away from anything he’s accomplished in the past of course. I’ve enjoyed watching him over the years.

Obligatory “Who’s Afraid of Allen Iverson?” re-creation with him wearing a Bobcats jersey.

    Ryne read my blog!

  • Alyssa

this is not his last slam cover plez belive it

  • Ted Dong

@ Ben Osborne: These comments are what I mean. I just re-sent my email, with a better title. Please read it!

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

    Slam wouldn’t dare

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Bryan: A couple paragraphs would do you well. But nice work!

  • JQ

AI is super overrated. Shoots way too much, dribbles way too much, if he was such a great scorer his field goal % would be much higher. Amazing how the Nugs are playing once they got rid of the cancer. Call me a hater if you want, but I’m only keeping it real.

  • niQ

final cover? prollly not. knowing slam, they’ll prolly put a cover of AI even while not in the league.

  • Ted Dong

@ Ryne: I sent something to Ben Osborne today and last weekend (the same thing). Please, if he ever shows it to you, feel free to read it man. Iverson deserves better treatment than this, especially from the fans!

“AI, in the right environment, can still Answer the call.—”…:i bet you don’t really believe this.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/ VASILIS SPANOULIS (2009 Euroleague MVP)

@Ted…:Iverson deserves much worse but his marketing power to the kids keeps saving him…

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

He’ll get another cover when he retires

  • neaorin

No team except maybe the Clippers would take Iverson right now. There is no NBA team willing to shape its “environment” to suit AI. Now Europe, on the other hand…

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Please explain to me Ted Dong, why he deserves better treatment from the fans? He’s fun to watch a good player, but nothing about his attitude should be praised. He gave up on his team. I know I know, they didn’t treat him very well, but I don’t care who you are, when you’re getting paid 20 million a year, you do EXACTLY what the coach and front office tell you to whether it’s playing 48 minutes or 1 minute. He was coming back from an “injury” and complained about his PT when they were just easing him back into the rotation. Like I said, he’s been good for the league over the years and really fun to watch, but I’m not sure why you think he’s entitled to any kind of treatment.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I’m curious whether he’ll get another signature shoe. I presume there was already one more in the works, but after that? Might be retros only.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again.
People who put a pricetag on their self respect and happiness are scary.
I suck certain things up at my job, but certain things I don’t tolerate. I would feel the same way, no matter how much money I was making.
Everybody’s threshold is different. I’m not saying his is right, but the idea that if you make a lot of money you should just shut your mouth and be happy is asinine.

Thanks for the bleak reminder, Ryne.

  • Brian

AI is going to dribble around with a vengeance next year!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I also wonder if this was his last photo shoot before he cut his hair?

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

But when you’re getting paid to play basketball, part of the deal is that you listen to your coaches, it’s just part of the game. He was coming off an “injury” so his minutes were cut back. He wasn’t haveing a particularly good season to begin with. I agree to some extent that you shouldn’t just “shut your mouth and be happy” all the time, but he was being a baby about the whole situation, granted Michael Curry, his teammates, and Joe D didn’t help the situation at all. AI had to know that he was pretty much a rent-a-player. They weren’t gonna re-sign him since he’s not part of thier long term plans on top of the fact that he was having a sub-par season. He had to know this and the best way to prove your worth is to play through crap like that. I highly doubt he’s going to get a very good contract next season. He’ll have to take a REALLY big pay cut to continue his career. All in all it still boils down to a situation hanbled horribly on both ends though. Management F’d up and he was a baby about it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

    hanbled = handled

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

That being said, people who blame Detroit’s bad season on AI are idiots…just so y’all don’t think that’s where I’m coming from.

Whenever Iverson announces a retirement, a SLAM special feature/issue shall appear

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

Wayno,AI had big minutes and barley produced us anything so everybody that truely watches and is a fan knows what happened and its all Allen Iversons fault. You people that watch other teams but follow the nba dont know what you are talking about because we see the pistons on a nightly bases and you see games on tnt, espn, abc and others. AI is hated in Detroit forever!

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Um, I’m from Detroit and I’m a huge Pistons fan…the situation was handled very poorly on both ends. I didn’t like AI that much to begin with, but I don’t hate him, he’s just a basketball player. You’re actin like he punched your mom or something, chill out.

A.I. was hated a lot this year and were talking about one of the best players in history one of the greatest scorers at such a small size hes one of the greatest period. He always gets blamed first they put him on a Denver team that did not play to much defence in the midlle of a season and wanted him to bring a ring right away if he didnt he sucked. Hes not as selfish as people make him he has about 6000 assists for his career and is currently 10th for active players in APG for their careers. One of the greatest players ever is not going to want to come off the bench for guys he is better then for his career (there only are 4 guys and only 1 guard(Kobe) )Yah so Then they put him on the most structured team in the league the Pistons which is real hard to drop 25 a night in. A.I. is being used less and its his dumb coaches that dont believe in him no more (curry). Allen is just like any other dominating scorer he needs to be with a right fit and he will suceed if you use him. A great team for him is oviously Charlotte their winning games right now with just there defence imagine if they bring a 27 ppg scorer for his career in. We talking bout the guy that changed this game forever and one of the greatest players ever he defines Slam and Slam and this guy are family of course he will get another cover. Ai on the Bobcats with his new hair and a chain Whos Afraid Of Allen Iverson?.Sick. Slam better do it if A.I. goes there, actually they should do it where ever he goes.

  • Jacob

Allen Iverson is my all time favorite player, but do gotta say this…he sucked as a piston!!!

  • http://lamarcusaldridge.com Dean [Tha Best]

AI is a great player. Detroit had no idea what they had. They WAY under played him.

I get particularly annoyed when people fail to see that this whole situation is VERY two sided. Everyone ascribes the blame to either A.I. or the Pistons when in fact both of them were wrong. On one side you have management hire an idiot for a head coach who couldn’t draw up an offensive play to save his life. On top of that you have a bunch of players who were sulking about losing thier best buddy on the team. Right off that bat that’s a rough situation to come into, but A.I. came into it saying all the right things and what not, but his attitude steadily declined as the season went on. Stupid decisions from the coach/managment brought on stupid reactions from A.I. He whined about lower playing time after coming back from an injury, a very questionable injury I might add. I don’t doubt that he was hurt, but I do HIGHLY doubt he was hurt bad enough to not play. Anyways, it eventually led to him calling it quits for the rest of the season. Whatever though, he’ll be on another team next year and Detroit gets a bunch of cap space, so it’s all good. I wish him the best. GO PISTONS!

  • rob stewart

A.I. is my favorite player of all-time but I still have to look at the facts. Both Philly and Denver improved greatly upon his departure. He needs to learn how to adjust to this part of his career. He could be a very good 30 mpg Point Guard averaging around 16 and 6 if he has the right attitude. But according to his track record that’s a big if. He should have one more cover left in him.

  • http://effyou@heythere.com Allenp

I think you have a good outlook on the issue. Too bad you are in the minority…

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Thanks Allen…ignorant people just need someone to blame I guess…oh well.

  • dont worry

allen iverson is re-uniting with larry brown to capture the long lost championship to the lakers in ’01
Similarities: Okafor=Mutumbo, but better; Wallace= Jumaine Jones, but better;Felton=Snow, but better;Raja Bell=Raja Bell, better and more experienced version of himself;boris diaw=coleman…the only drawback is AI’s skill level which can be either better or worse next season but lets remember one thing…Allen iverson averaged 27, 7, 2 steals in the season before this one…The pistons Heartless Management didn’t know how to handle such a presence and if he had spent this season with the nuggets i think they would’ve figured it out and would be right where they are with BIllups…The Answer is not the Cancer

It’s over for A.I. as no team that wants to win an NBA Title will put him on their team! Look at Denver after they traded him for Billups and what Detroit turned into after they traded for him? He’s not a complimentary player because he hogs the ball and doesn’t make his teammates better unless his teammates are less talented than he is. When he plays with players who just as talented as he is, he can’t function..He has a wonderful career, but it’s the end of the road for A.I. and they only people who don’t see that are the loyal A.I. supporters who think he still has it….

those kicks are terrible…..I actually like the design but they fit and feel pretty crappy……

A.I. will be back and better thgan ever

  • Drew433

AI is no longer a superstar in this league. His jumpshot is inconsistent, his defense is even worse than it used to be, and he clearly showed his deep passion only exists when he’s in a favorable role.
