Pre-Draft Measurements Released!

by Ryne Nelson

Measurements can only tell us so much. It’s what players do on the court that matters most. But it’s still fun to break down and compare the results! Below are the players who stood out at first glance, to me at least:

Blake Griffin | 6-10 | 6-11 wingspan | 248 pounds | 8-9 reach
Nothing wrong with these measurements. Most power forwards are Griffin’s height and weight or less. His wingspan is a bit short—6-11 is about the same length as wing men Josh Smith, LeBron James and Michael Beasley. Then again, Kevin Love has the same wingspan and reach, and he’s doing just fine in the L. Griffin’s athleticism and willingness to bang with the trees makes all the difference.

DeJuan Blair | 6-6 1/2 | 7-2 wingspan | 277 pounds | 8-10 1/2 reach
There are 15 players in the Draft who have a 7-0+ wingspan, and 13 of them are 6-7 1/2 or taller. He’s incredibly short, but Blair’s 7-2 wingspan saves him. He’s more than three inches closer to the ground than Griffin, yet his wingspan is three inches greater. Will Blair’s height be a problem in the NBA? These measurements shouldn’t stifle Blair’s stock, considering he’s dropped 15 pounds and is arguably the best offensive rebounder.

James Harden | 6-5 | 6-11 wingspan | 222 pounds | 8-7 1/2 reach
These measurements put to rest any notion that Harden is undersized for a 2 guard. Paul Pierce comparisons might be legit: He’ll use his long arms and stocky frame to finish in the paint without incredible athleticism. It will be very hard for teams to pass on this guy.

Earl Clark | 6-10 | 7-2 1/2 wingspan | 228 pounds | 9-1 1/2 reach
Excellent measurements. Clark’s reach is nearly five inches longer than Griffin’s, and dude has the skill set to be a SF in the NBA. Clark definitely benefited today. Despite the fact that he didn’t improve much over his sophomore and junior years at Louisville, only a major catastrophe could remove him from being a Lottery lock.

Tyreke Evans | 6-5 | 6-11 wingspan | 221 pounds | 8-8 reach
Almost identical measurements to James Harden, although the difference in their games is gigantic. He’ll be able to guard most PGs and SGs in the League and play both positions as well. His long-range game leaves much to be desired, but Evans’ versatility cements him in the mid-Lottery range.

Hasheem Thabeet | 7-2 1/2 | 7-6 wingspan | 267 pounds | 9-5 reach
As the Draft’s tallest player and owner of the longest wingspan and reach, Thabeet took another step toward becoming the Grizzlies’ prize. The Commish could be right on his Mock Draft pick. Thabeet’s length and improving skill are rare—only Brendan Haywood measures a taller reach and longer wingspan. Thabeet is big, but players his size have come around before. At least Thabeet doesn’t have Yao-like, T-Rex limbs.

Jonny Flynn | 6-1 | 6-4 wingspan | 196 pounds | 7-11 1/2 reach
Not quite as small as some suspected. Flynn measured to be essentially the same size as Ty Lawson, just with over three inches in wingspan. Flynn’s more athletic and doesn’t have injury concerns. He’s a high-character guy who’s on the cusp of being a Lottery pick.

Austin Daye | 6-11 | 7-3 wingspan | 192 pounds | 9-2 reach
He has the second-longest wingspan in the camp, but Daye weighs less than Flynn and Lawson. Daye’s measurements are unreal—this is one skinny young man! Given his nice stroke and length, he’s certainly one of the most intriguing first round prospects.

reaching less than a foot below the rim still amazes me.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Jonny Flynn is my breakout player in this draft.
Not saying he’ll win ROY, but he’ll be great value in the mid first round. Daye is an enigma, but could probably shred on a team that isn’t concerned with playing D.
If James Harden goes after Derozan its gonna be like the Lwolves taking Foye instead of Roy all over again.
And people are forgetting how nasty Earl Clark will be as a third or fourth option (I’d really love to see the Nets scoop him. Devin Harris/Brook Lopez/Earl Clark would be a very solid starting point, now if they could just do something about getting a new coach…)

  • MW

Johnny Flynn is a champion. He is a beast and im with ciolkstar as havin him as a breakout player. I think he could easily be the ROY though…..with some crazy luck of having Blake Griffin go down.

  • http://sfkldf.com Jukai

Johnny Flynn will be a good bench warmer. Not buying into his hype.

  • iheartcoffee

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Austin Daye? I hope the Raptor’s can buy a pick later in the draft to get him. Even though they don’t really need him I think he’s an interesting prospect. Maybe he could play a Nicholas Batum role for some teams with that size and wingspan. Obviously he needs to start eating some big macs.

  • iheartcoffee

I think Johnny Flynn is this years DJ Augustine.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

I came to realize the past couple of years why I dind’t make the NBA – I’ve only got a 6’5″ wingspan. That is obviously the only thing that held me back!!

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

It should be mentioned that the heights Ryne listed are with shoes on. That being said, I’m impressed the Blake Griffin came out as big as he did (remember last year when Beasley mysteriously shrunk several inches from his listed college height) as well as Earl Clark – his size on the wing is very rare.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

As for the question regarding Daye, he really could go either way – become a big time NBA player or a big time bust. I’d prefer to see him play another year with the Zags.

  • mmm

I hope the Suns draft Daye so Shaq can use him as a toothpick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Are we getting a live blog for tonights lakers game?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

besides the shooting guards and point guards of this years draft, and Earl Clark/Tyler Hansbourgh/Blake Griffin i dont see any real difference makers in this draft class (and i am counting Terrance Williams as a Shooting Guard)

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The only difference Tyler Hansborough makes in the league next year is trying to come up with a better commercial than Kevin Love.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    or *infomercial.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I don’t get why people think this draft is so weak. I mean, obviously we aren’t going to get another 2003, but I see at least a couple guys making SOME impact in the NBA directly. Johnny Flynn, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Blake Griffin, Tywon Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Stephen Curry, Hasheem Thabeet (at least defensively), and Demar Derozan. Even Ricky Rubio (however overrated) might make SOME impact with the playing time he’s going to get.
That’s not that bad a draft class, people!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I just ask that whomever the Suns pick, somehow gets some decent court time….yet at the same time, I want Alando Tucker, Goran Dragic and Lopez to improve on last year… so who do you get? Someone that can shoot the crud out of the ball, or a one man fast break, or rebound that rock offensively – Come on down, Earl Clark, Johnny Flynn or Tyler Hansborough!!

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Teddy: Arent the people you named (beside Thabeet, who will end up being the next Desegna Diop, which isnt bad or good) the exact same as the ones i said. You used government names, i used positions. But Tyler Hansbourgh has adjusted his game and has shown he has the ability to, making him a likely role player with a 10-15 year career.

  • Morales

damn! daye is 6-11? I thought we was wayyyy shorter than that

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Blair is 6-6 and a half….jeez. Talk about playing larger than he is.

  • Ajo

no verts, no 3/4 court times, no interest.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

    Beasley is like 6-4 now.

Earl Clark has to be the star of this type of day!

I hung out with Daye last fall and I thought he was closer to 7-feet. I felt really short and i am legitimately, 6-8. Jeff, I too wish he had stayed (selfish reasons) but I can’t see him being a bust.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Flynn is not 6’1. @ BET: Not sure what you’re talking about. No problems with you defending Tyler. What positions are you talking about?

  • Jay G

Yea that Wingspan of Marvin Williams beats having Chris Paul any day, right Atlanta? I bet Bilas is all over this.

  • http://nbadraftscouts.com Tyler Whitcomb

The most impressive measurement is of James Harden’s reach. He’s a very craft 2-guard that lacks some athleticsm of an NBA shooting guard. We all know his basketball IQ is good and he has a nice 1st step. By being 220 lbs., he has size and now that I know he has a 6’11 wingspan, I could see him going in the top 4. Ryne did a good job of showing a comparison with Paul Pierce.I know we keep talking about the same top 3 Blake, Hasheem, and Ricky and I agree with the top 3, However we need to make that a top 4 and include Harden. I’m a huge fan of Jennings and can make a push for him and Derozan being a top 5 or 6 pick, but no way I’m drafting them over Harden. If the experts are correct this year and Harden slips to 7 or 8, what a steal for who get’s him.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

YKnot-Have you ever seen Austin Daye play?

  • Ken

In related news, they re-measured Mike Beasley, who shrunk another 3 inches over the past season.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

More like a less athletic jonathan bender yknot.

  • The Last Kings Fan

Tyreke Evans’s wingspan is impressive. And Eddie Jordan is the new coach of the Sixers if anyone cares

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Teddy: I said the class is weak at every postion except Shooting Guard and Point Guard, then named a couple of exceptions. You said it is a strong class because of certain players that happen to play shooting and point guard.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Blinguo

Is Thabeet’s post shotblocking waving (not in the/my house) celebration finger as long as Mutumbo’s? Someone needs to go back and measure that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Flynn! Flynn! Flynn! Oh how I wish the Raptors would take him. I know we’ve got Jose, but I just feel like he’s going to be a star.

  • mattyp32

it amazes me that austin daye is 192 lbs. thats not even 20 lbs more than me and im 6’1 haha

The Suns will get a decent wing player this year, plus a bruising PF in the second round and hey presto! The 2nd team will be fighting for court time!

Oh, snap. Where did I put Donnie Walsh’s e-mail address? I gotta’ send him this link, before he picks some rancid Curry.
