Raptors Extend Jay Triano with 3-year deal

Considering the season the Raptors had, it’s a bit of a surprise. But Triano did well with what he had and was rewarded with a long-term deal today. Congrats to the NBA’s first Canadian head coach.

Lead your team to a 33 win season and u get… a three year deal? ridiculous

  • Gumdrop

He’s been solid in terms of implementing strategy and motivating his guys. I’m happy about this.

Not his fault they sucked this year – Colangelo didn’t give him much to work with.

    Really what?

  • The Starks Knight

I am not encouraged by this news.

  • Tyrone Shoelaces

total shocker, i was expecting them to sign sam mitchell, him being the top free agent coach right now and all.. ;)

I say trade Bosh for some real building blocks and make Triano the next Jerry Sloan. Let the guy be the coach for the next forty years. He might have no clue right now but a Canadian coach in Toronto is an awesome idea.

I agree with trading Bosh – I don’t ever see him being a “franchise” guy who will win a championship for you. He’s a real good player, just not a superstar.

Sorry Jeff, the “Really??” comment wasn’t for you. I was just commenting on the story itself. Triano may be a decent coach, but he did absolutely nothing this season after taking over for Sam Mitchell that tells me he should get an extension.

As much as I like the idea of having a Canadian coach coaching Canada’s team…..he really should be on the bench as an Assistant coach, not Head coach.

I wasn’t a fan of him coaching the National team for the Olympics and I wasn’t really a fan of him as head coach of the Raps.

The players will probably tune him out by the end of the season.

Might as well bringin Jamaal Magloire if we’re doing the Canadian thing

Bad decision as well, the Raptors have two choices at the momment
1.Trade Bosh and get a young star and begin rebuilding
2.Make a high priced free agent signing to propel them up into homecourt advantage

  • Flight

This is terrible news for my raps!

  • Sparker

the raps are going nowhere faster

  • frank

holy crapola. this will not end well.

It was inevitable that the Raptors would have a reality-check season or three coming up. What Colangelo did was make sure that the next three seasons are going to be interesting, full of potential, and stable. That’s why I think Triano is a good move. He’s got home-town/country support. He’s a level-headed guy who knows the team and the locker-room culture, and he’s got three years to build up his experience and keep things stable while they rebuild. Bosh is so gone.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Raptors should have picked up AVERY JOHNSON! COME ON HOMETOWN!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Raptors should have picked up Amare Stoudemire if they were going to trade Bosh LAST SEASON!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Raptors could have drafted Gilbert Arenas OR Tony Parker before? Instead they drafted MICHAEL BRADLEY!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I love the Raptors, but the front office has been nothing short of frustrating. Keep your head up though guys, good news will come soon.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

Rudy gay for andrea bargnani! pleaseee, or bosh

  • thesubwayconnection

Jay Triano’s better than Leo Rautins, obviously. That addresses the national team comments. As for the Raptors, really, they need to shake up their personnel this summer. 33 wins doesn’t get it done, and not much of that is Triano’s fault. The Raps didn’t execute, they didn’t defend, and they were overmatched most of the time.

  • wilz

the deal was prolly pretty cheap, so if they have to fire him, it wont be a big deal to pay out the rest of his contract..

  • Rusty Pecker

you can’t trade bargnani mello man…he’s the best player on the team….and triano is fine…things were looking good at the end of the season

@Teddy: Not even to mention Araujo.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

The Raptors are not built to contend. They have never been built to contend. The Raptors of the last 4 years or so were built to entertain. We aimed to be the Phoenix Suns Mark II. Since the original Suns have come to naught playoff-wise, we never woulda done any better. So let’s get things straight, because management and fans alike are too confused for our own good. Trade Bosh away for “building blocks”? Building blocks toward… what? Trading Bosh away means the f*cking dark ages of 2002-2003 all over again. Raptor fans: you want a title? Is management serious to try and win one? Unless these questions are answered, talk of trading Bosh should *not* be entertained. “He’s not a superstar” – sure he isn’t, but how many superstars are there? DWade? James? Kobe? Timmy? KG? Outside of these and a few others, WHAT exactly is a superstar for you Raptor fans? And HOW are we going to entice a superstar with serious title hopes when we can’t even make short stints with has-been All Stars (JO) or self-centered b*atchy ones (Marion) work out properly?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Why did they fire Mitcell again? No, seriously?

  • Dionisio

Signing Triano is a decent move to keep the Raptors relevant. We won’t be contenders if we can’t stop the other team from scoring; I’m sorry, but I haven’t seen Triano’s ability to coach defense. We did have a promising end to the season, but I wonder how much that has to do with a few players (namely Marion) playing for a contract. If Bargs can continue his upward growth as a player, we are one good wing player away from fighting for a playoff spot. Just a playoff spot.

  • sixersforlife_85

We will take Bosh off your hands for Brand. Shame the contracts don’t work.

  • Dionisio

I would cry the day that trade happened.

  • finest hour

Bosh is a free agent in 2010 why would he want a trade. And hes a 20-10 player so why trade him just get him some help. I think toronto has around 8 mil to work with this free agent market if they dont re-sign.

  • finest hour

    most likely a decent wing.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Z: They fired Sam Mitchell because they were unhappy with the Raps’ first-round playoff exits and slightly-above .500 record for the last few seasons. What we’d give to have that back again. If it ain’t f*cking broke…

  • http://jakeandamir.com tealish

Haha… as a Canadian who’s oddly never liked their one and only franchise, this is just another funny mark in the sadness that is the Raptors. It’s time to forget about booing VC and the compensatory delusion of Bosh being a superstar, and concentrate on bringing in a legit franchise player.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Joel O’s: Dude, what are you talking about. Bosh is going to want to leave, fool. If you aren’t going to trade him, what are you going to do? Let him walk away? Get what you can for his value. Chris is awesome, and I’m a big fan of his, but you really need to be realistic, Joel.
Plus, Amare Stoudemire is going to be going on the trading blocks again once these playoffs are over… I’m sure Steve Kerr wouldn’t mind getting Chris Bosh. This SHOULD (key word) be a huge possibility for the Raptors.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I still say we should have gotten Avery Johnson.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Or even Eddie Jordan, man! Wow. Mo Cheeks? Seriously, Colangelo couldn’t think of ANYONE else?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Well, goodnight people.
Now for a cheer of my favorite team, to get prepared for game 6:

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

Teddy, none of those guys would want to go to Canada. Thats why you never get any real FA signings. I sure as hell would’nt want to go there

  • I am the walrus

Now only 1 question is left… why would you give him a 3 year deal?

  • realosophy

the only decent decision jay triano made was to give pops mensah-bonsu some playing time. Toronto should have kept vc and mcgrady all them years back or atleast traded them for someone decent. when i heard triano got hired i thought this is the end of the raptors, they will lose horribly and end up being sent to a US city like the Grizzlies. their players are so weak, none of them are nba starters, calderon is a terrible pg and bosh is not a superstar, he just stands out on a wack team.
