Rasheed to the Cavs?

My sources say that Rasheed Wallace and the Cavs are beginning talks on a two-year deal worth about $10 million per for the services of the former Piston. The move and negotiations were inspired by Dwight Howard’s dominant performance over Cleveland’s big men in the Eastern Conference Finals.  And Wallace will be brought in for that very purpose, to neutralize Dwight Howard next season and help the Cavs get over the hump.

This supports what we previously reported about what it will take for Sheed to come back next year.

If this signing falls through, I’m hearing that Cleveland may do a sign and trade with the Clippers for Zach Randolph, which certainly makes sense for the Clippers since they are taking Blake Griffin No. 1 overall.

    Also, the MLE can be for up to three years.
    And the NBA has a “soft cap”, the Cavs can go over, it will juat cost them extra. Losing Bron would cost them hundreds of millions of dollars in the long run, so spending a few extra mill in hopes of getting a chip and convinciong Lebron to stay in the ‘Land would be well worth it.

    I’m hearing Charlie V. That actually makes way more sense than Sheed or Z-Bo. 6’11, mobile. Can play the 3 and the 4. They could get him for the MLE. For some reason, the Bucks didn’t play him enough. 22 and 9 per36.

    Yeah, Cav’s can’t offer 10M per year for Sheed, they don’t have the cap space. But if they are able to get him for the MLE on a 2 year deal it’s worth a shot. Sheed isn’t the same player anymore, but for 25 minutes a game he can be solid. On offense Sheed can do what he loves and sit at the 3 point line and space the floor for Lebron. One of the reasons Detroit has owned Orlando lately is b/c of the defense Sheed plays on D. Howard…he probably guards him better then anyone else in the league. Cleveland got killed against Orlando since they always double teamed Dwight and left 3 point shooters open. The question is, with Sheed aging and D. Howard improving will it stay that way?

    3 team trade: Ilgauskas and a cheap player go to New Orleans, Tyson Chandler to Phoenix, and Shaq to Cleveland. I like that idea for all three teams. can i get an amen?

    How do we not have cap room with 7 mil from snow, 13 mil from wally and possibly 14 mil from wallace coming off the books. I honestly do not know a lot about how the cap works, but doesn’t this give us room to go after free agents?

    Okay, first of all, this trade isn’t about STOPPING HOWARD. Goodness… Its about getting a legitimate inside player. Rasheed Wallace is one of the best, most versatile power forwards of his generation. He’s on the downside right now, but he’s still going to be of value to the Cavaliers. Oh, but wait, I’m pretty sure the Cavs would rather have Andersen Varejao, right commenters?

    Randolph would be a locker room killer. The Cavs thrived by having team unity and everyone knowing there rolls. I think Randolph could defiantly help on the court its off the court you have to worry about

    I see that people have a lot of concern about the salary cap. In the NBA, technically you can spend as much as you want as long as you abide by the rules and pay the penalties, to do so. Cleveland does have salary cap room and dumping salaries is always an option..this is still not a reason for why it won’t happen.. If Cleveland commences with the package, of course, once it is legal to do so, I am sure they will make the neccessary financial adjustments to get the player they want. As someone else stated earlier, letting LeBron get away because of a few million dollars in salary cap constraints is the dumber move, then paying Sheed , if his signing is even going to make LeBron feel better in the first place. I think he’s leaving and will end up in a larger market anyway.. like NY..

    If a team is over the cap (which Cleveland will be unless Big Z opts out which won’t happen, Varajao opts out, and Ben retires which are both likely), they only have the exemptions to spend. Since Wallace was not playing on the Cavs next year, he doesn’t have his Bird rights for the Cavs (only Detroit has his bird rights). That means that only Detroit can go over the cap to resign Sheed.

    If Cleveland wants Sheed, they have to sign him using the MLE (which works out to be a bit over 5 million a year) because they will be over the cap for next season already.

    There are also tons of places to find out what teams have cap space – storyteller contracts, shamsports, realgm, and the like.

    To spend 10 million a year on Sheed, Cleveland either has to work out a sign and trade with Detroit, dump salary/players to the 3 teams that do have cap space (and I don’t think Detroit will help them with that, so that makes 2), or hope that Z opts out (he said he won’t), that Ben retires and gets a reasonable buyout, AND Varajao opts out.

    Sign & trade for Zach Randolph. Sign who? Which free agent would they send to the Clippers? Why does it feel like this whole post is bogus and written by someone with limited knowledge of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement? Come one SLAM, do better.

    A better scenario would be Ben Wallace for Randolph, with the Clips offering a buy-out for Big Ben to clear the roster spot and free up cap space. But that’s a straight trade. Again, try to offer better than nonsense in the future. Your customers deserve better.

    I think the “sources” in this story are a few guys at the bar talking about what the Cavs “should do”, but can’t do because of their current cap situation.

    Sign and trade of what? Z-Bo’s under contract for two more years, so he can’t be signed and traded. Cleveland doesn’t really have any free agents that the Clippers would be interested in – particularly because they’ll have to match up to ZBo’s large salary. Maybe Andy, but he’s another big that would take up space that Griffin should have, and he reportedly wants $10 million.

    This just seems like a really BS post.

    I love how you clowns say it would put the Cavs over the cap. They have been over the cap for a few years now you fools. What you think the luxury tax is for. Cavs own dosnt mind paying it. If they would have gotten Shaq at mid season they would have had to pay his 20mil plus another 20 in luxury tax. Now as far as sheed to stop howard, of course it would work, why do you think the piston good or bad have been owner the magic. The magic didnt tank the last few games of the season for nothing. They wanted to avoid detroit at ALL COST in the first round lol

Sheed would be exactly what the cavs need to get through orlando in the playoffs next year. he would fill the one hole the cavs have until the cavs can get chris bosh from toronto in 2010 to pair with lebron and mo.

    The cavs are over the cap. According to NBA rules (look it up yourselves idiots) you cannot sign another teams free agent for more than the mid range allows. The mid range is 5 million, thus the cavs can’t sign him to a 2 yr/ 10 million a year contract.

    This has nothing to do with the luxury tax. You only pay a dollar for dollar amount if you are way above the luxury tax threshhold.

    My god, it only takes a few minutes of reading to figure this out.

    This makes no sense to the Cavs. Sheed is all but done and in no way a defensive minded big man. He is not worth 10 mill a season or even the 8 mill which appears to be the lowest he will go next year. He is more in the mid level exception range. Zach Randolph is under contract for at least the next 2 years so a “sign and trade” isn’t even possible. Randolph would be a terrible presence in Cleveland, not something you want to bring in to convince LeBron to stick around after 2010.

    I liek any writer that has the balls to report what he feels is an accurate scoop. Most “so-called” journalists these days are more woried about getting invited to a player’s party and being a bitch ass shill, fake celebrity. I have read J.Gamble’s stuff for years and he is usually pretty on point, whether it is music or sports, both of which he has the respect of the industry. And as far as being a bad writer, I know he writes very well and has won awards for his writing. Let’s stop spewing venom and wait and see what transpires. If I am correct he said Rasheed would retire if he doesn’t get 8 million per. Well, let’s see what happens. The Cleveland deal may or may not happen we have to wait and see. Things change. Circumstances change. I hate coach potatoe, monday morning QB’s.

    That’s impossible. The Cavs are over the salary cap. It’s also entirely unrealistic. Sheed probably won’t even get a team’s full MLE. Also, teams can’t negotiate for free agents until July 1st.

    This is horrible. Do some research. And also, considering Zach Randolphs HORRIBLE post defense, why in the world would the Cavs want him?

    With incentives i belive Rasheed’s deal with the Celtics exceeds 8 million dollars.It seems J.Gamble was right. It is hard to be the first to report on something. Facts change. I red some other stuff by you. Fearless reporting slam is lways looking to be more than a feature magazine.
