A Look at the Cavs’ Options

It’s pretty much table scraps (sorry, Shawn) at this point: “The dominoes starting falling in the NBA on Day Two of free agency. Some of the players the Cavaliers had significant interest in appear to be headed other places but they are still very much in the free-agent game. According to a league source, the Cavaliers have begun homing in on Toronto Raptors free-agent guard Anthony Parker after both Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza appeared set to go to other teams. Another source said the Cavs also have spoken to another Raptors free agent, former All-Star Shawn Marion, though it was not clear late Thursday if the two sides had gotten serious. Both players are unrestricted free agents.”

cavs shouldn’t make a panic move and get somebody just to one-up their rivals. this is still a 66 wins team that added a 17-8 on 60% fg center for two guys who were not going to play. i don’t know if ap or shawn really improve the team. andy v better be in the gym right now working on his 15-footer.

  • I Like Blazers Posted: Jul.3 at 2:36 am
Sign Hedo so freakin’ Portland don’t. Save us from that sh*tty idea.

  • mcfly Posted: Jul.3 at 2:45 am
sounds to me like the other teams are starting to worry about the champs repeating again….. most def the lakers are favorites to repeat regardless of egos meshing because talent always prevails but we dont have to worry about that because kobe and fisher and lamar(pretty sure he will resign with lakers)and coach pj will keep ron ron in check and if it doesnt work we will just ship him out of la

  • I Like Blazers Posted: Jul.3 at 2:50 am
Why does that need to be moderated?

  • elias Posted: Jul.3 at 3:02 am
The Defense and rebounding from Shawn should be a big help for the Cavs. So if anything, they should go with Marion.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jul.3 at 3:03 am
@ Z: I disagree. If the Cavs expect to make something happen, they’re looking to win right now. LeBron is only going to stay for one more year if things don’t pan out correctly. They definitely missed the boat on Charlie V, Travor, and Artest, 3 guys that could almost guarantee them a trip to the finals. Anthony Parker would be an upgrade over Andy, in my opinion. Obviously they play different positions, but if you want a knock down shooter other than Mo Williams (who underachieved), AP is your man.

  • neaorin Posted: Jul.3 at 3:29 am
My thinking is that the last piece(s) of the puzzle will arrive at the trade deadline. Of course, I thought the same thing before the last trade deadline as well.

  • rob Posted: Jul.3 at 3:35 am
    Darius miles! come on down!

  • Kas Posted: Jul.3 at 5:02 am
the reason they slipped away is that all other NBA players has realized that James is a di(k, and that he’ll never be a champion

  • Hursty Posted: Jul.3 at 6:52 am
Teddy - Ariza and Ron both play (generally) the same position that Bron does, so why would they be interested in signing them?

  • Mansonovic Posted: Jul.3 at 7:01 am
And isn’t the same true of Marion? These “moves” make no sense.

  • Anton Posted: Jul.3 at 7:36 am
    Shaqalicious cures all

  • Z Posted: Jul.3 at 8:03 am
marion can play 4. he did it in miami and phx. but i’d prefer anthony parker and sheed or dice at this point.

  • lakers4life Posted: Jul.3 at 8:33 am
    how ’bout IVERSON???

  • T Money Posted: Jul.3 at 8:38 am
Bron, Shaq AND Iverson??! How will the rest of the team fit in the locker room with all those big heads?

  • wilz Posted: Jul.3 at 8:47 am
i cant hate parker…so seein him on the cavs would hurt a lot. marion tho, i HOPE he joins the cavs…he’ll fit right in..

  • Chendaddy Posted: Jul.3 at 9:11 am
I desperately wanted the Cavs to get Ariza, but actually I have high hopes for Danny Green to fill that role. Don’t sign Hedo, because he’ll ask for way more money than he’s worth. Why do you think a guy who had such a great playoffs is still available in the first place? Shawn Marion sounds interesting, if he can check his ego and signs a short-term deal for the mid-level under the promise of winning a championship. But, ever since leaving the Suns, he’s proven that he needs a high-octane transition offense where roles aren’t rigidly defined (because he can do everything) to succeed. Plus, Cleveland needs shooters to space the floor around LeBron, and Marion hasn’t shot over 25% on threes since leaving the desert. Anthony Parker? Another role player? Really? Oh, 37-yr old Shaq was supposed to be all the talent Cleveland needed to acquire, Danny Ferry?

  • nate the great Posted: Jul.3 at 9:16 am
they said they were going to move bron to the 4 spot. so ariza ron and shawn can play the 3 if they get signed. basicly they either need a 3 point shooting power in sheed and Cv (who signed) or a defensive 3 ron (who signed) they are kinda screwed.
if they get hedo he is either the 4 or 3.

  • #6marjon Posted: Jul.3 at 9:31 am
leave everyone else if sheed aint coming just see how it works with the big cavalier thats still a pretty formidable duo not to mention mo-wills still hanging about with delonte, big-z and varejao

  • Z Posted: Jul.3 at 10:42 am
i know this feels like a downer because they missed out on their targets but the cavs are still very very good. they can win 65 to 70 games next year. magic gained vince but lost turk. lakers gained artest but lost ariza. cleveland didn’t lose anything and added shaq. cavs right have three legit 20 ppg dudes in shaq, bron and mo and glue guys in west, andy v and ilgauskas. that’s very very good. no panic trade needed. if sheed is there, you take him. if he’s not, DON’T SETTLE FOR MARION. he doesn’t fit.

  • Canuck Posted: Jul.3 at 10:50 am
@Z: You’re absolutely right. I can’t figure out why Orlando apparently made a huge move and is now the favourite in the east. The gained a 20 5 and 5 guy and lost an 18 5 and 5 guy. Really. And the Artest signing was great and everything but I think Ariza was a much better ‘fit’ on their starting line. And for anyone who thinks the Cavs should actually sign Marion…really? You’re gonna put a guy who’s basically only effective in an up-tempo offense and put him on the team with the slowest pace in the league that just got slower with Shaq?

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.3 at 11:18 am
I’m still holding out on Hedo. Praying. Do not get Marion.

  • ab_40 Posted: Jul.3 at 11:40 am
Marvin Williams that open 4 spot is perfect for marvin williams. charlie V opted for detroit. I think marvin can guard those hybrid 4 guys

  • Z Posted: Jul.3 at 1:31 pm
juks, how would they be able to pay him 10 mil per tho? sign and trade? damn, marvin would do. i didn’t know he was available.

  • Kevin Wilson Posted: Jul.3 at 1:38 pm
How good does trading for Richard Jefferson in February look now?

  • niQ Posted: Jul.3 at 2:28 pm
In my opinion, Anthony Parker plays the same as Pavlovic, and they barely used him in the playoffs.

  • Realosophy Posted: Jul.3 at 2:59 pm
anthony parker’s sister candace would be better for cavs then him.

  • Z Posted: Jul.3 at 3:39 pm
Turk is in Portland. Rudy, Outlaw or Webster will be available.

  • Anton Posted: Jul.3 at 4:18 pm
    ^Is that offishall or what?

  • Exile Posted: Jul.3 at 5:49 pm
I still like the AP idea for Cleveland. He is consistent… better than Pav and is able to play off the ball and defend. Plus… WAY cheaper than Marion…. and Portland is gonna lock down the Turk. Sorry Jukai.

  • Statik Posted: Jul.3 at 7:46 pm
Not completely official, but Hedo has agreed to go to Portland…I’ve seen Travis Outlaw play and his defense and athleticism would be something the Cavs could use, just depends on what they can pay him

  • jmgatskiejr Posted: Jul.4 at 8:49 am
Marvin is intriguing. Marion might match up against rashard but that leaves lebron chasing vince and every other quick athletic 3 in the league. AP is a solid defender and decent shooter but we need athleticsm! Sign kleiza and MW! Young athletic bigs that can shoot a little. Trade varejao for parker if determined to have a big 2.

  • Brad Long Posted: Jul.4 at 10:39 am
Hedo to Cleveland is just about the worst idea ever, Jukai. He wants $10 million or more per year(which Cleveland doesn’t have) and he plays the same postion as LeBron. Terrible.

  • Meloman20 Posted: Jul.5 at 12:45 pm
whats with all the Hate on Anthony parker?? dude is a solid player and is one of the most humble NBA players you’ll ever find

  • Jeter Posted: Jul.6 at 2:08 am
Marion will be a great addition. Clearly, the Shaq-uisition is an over-rated deal. Yes he had a good year last year and he is still one of the dominant forces out there. But Cleveland got killed in the perimeter and they definitely lack that wing defender. Ariza would have been GREEEAAAT. But since he is in Houston, The Mantis, uhm, The Matrix will be a god option as well, albeit, an expensive one.

  • jose Posted: Jul.6 at 3:57 pm
get anthony parker, mcdyess,.marion wont do it there. They aint run-n-gun really.marions only good in that system…….Marion shuld go to G-State haha
