Anderson Varejao, $50 Mil, and You

by Marcel Mutoni

Not sure about the rest of you out there, but I had a tough time sleeping last night. I mean, if this is now a world in which Anderson Varejao is worth $50 million (according to the voices inside Danny Ferry’s mind, anyway), is it a world any of us really want to live in?

The Plain Dealer sifts threw the financial wreckage:

The Cavs have agreed on a new contract with forward Anderson Varejao, agent Dan Fegan said Wednesday…Varejao, the team’s versatile big man who became a starter last season, is set to get a six-year contract that could be worth as much as $50 million.

Varejao had interest from several teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers and Oklahoma City Thunder, and other potential sign-and-trade offers from other teams without salary-cap space. Fegan said several teams were willing to offer Varejao contracts that averaged $10 million per season.

I joked on Twitter that this was just a ploy by the Cavs’ GM to take the attention away from LeBron and the folks who make his running shoes following DunkGate, and I still haven’t heard a more reasonable explanation for this deal.

Feel free to help me out in the comments below.

They are going to KILL the Magic now. They can guard D.Howard, Vince and Rashard with single coverage. And the Celtcs are just going to be hurt again.
Cavs to the Finals 2010, both Shaq and LeBron against Kobe!!!

P.S. I really to not want to even think about 2010 FA period, so no comments on where is LBJ going after this season. Im just happy they are better this year.

i guess Danny Ferry see Andy averaging 20-20 in the post-LeBron era

  • RedRum

That is what I thought… either Lebron told them to sign him at any cost or he screwed them to overpay Bob so he can have an excuse to leave (I don’t see them making the finals…). 8mil is a lot of money, yes, Bob brings a defense, but you are playing 4 on 5 when on offense when he is in. Especially now that the league has at least 6 teams that look loaded in all positions, you cannot afford that

    1) O-V-E-R-P-A-I-D…….

42 mil for 6 years is fine… Varejao is not the best player in the wolrd but he helps a lot on D. 8-8 dont say everything, the guy is a hustler and can annoy everybody on the flor. I liked.

42 Mil garunteed may seem like a lot but go to espn.com and look at player’s salaries. Verajao is worth appx 8.5 mil a year by far.

I use to hate Verajao! BUT if you watched the Eastern Conference Finals, Verajao was the one keeping the Cavs in the game! If you just paid attention to him instead of LeBron you have seen the DEFENSE he was playing on RAFER ALSTON! He cause many turnovers, steals, and grabbed boards.

Also, he made his clutch lay-ups when LeBron dished him the rock with in crunch time.

Look, it’s NOT 50 mill a year, it’s 42+mil over FIVE YEARS. It makes sense.

    @Kobe>Lebron
Lamar is worth at LEAST 14 MIL PER YEAR! Not 8 Mil! The only way Lamar would sign for less than right now is if he re-signed with the Lakers BECAUSE HE WANTS TO WIN! If he left L.A. he’s not signing for anything less than that!

  • John

I think Mr. Ferry doesnt like the Cavs too much why else would he want sideshow Bob to get that kind of contract

  • SK

How is Verejao versatile? I can’t believe they gave him a 6 year deal for $50 million, unless years 3-6 are each team options.

  • RedRum

Blazers just offered 32m for 4 years for Millsap… you mean to tell me that Bob and Sap are worth the same amount of money??? Only in the NBA…

  • Tom

wow this is how they try to keep lebron past 2010. Epic fail.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    LMFAO @ John 5:40 am.

  • Randy Brown

There’s not a team in the League that wouldn’t want Varejao. Not for $50 mil of course

  • chris

man people in ohio must be in distress…no Pro championships since the 60′s ur precious Buckeyes lost in the National championship game 2 times in a row… …ya aint keepin Bron and now ya spent 50 on varejao??? i’d move to michigan at least there they have the pistons….ehhh

  • RedRum

Just to put it in perspective, Artest signed a 5 year deal for the mid-level…

  • Pancho

Well the truth is everybody thinks they have more game than Andy and they are jealous cause they’re not getting paid that much.
    Whole buch’o haters.

  • Boston4lyfe

wowwwwwwwwwwww…..HE SUCKS!!!!!! are you kidding me?!! He’s SUCH A BAD forward its not even funny. KG can run faster than him…and he’s TALLER!

  • Chris

Anderson is terrible. big waste of money. we should have just got rid of him. worst move the cavs have made in the past couple years.

  • Bubba 2 stepp

Let’s call it what it is, he’s over paid for his services… Holy Bailer—setting picks is basic basketball—and energy—-give me the Bird man in Denver for an energy guy, at least he finishes strong and plays fearless… we needed to spend our efforts on a realy number 4, what a waist, Fairy needs to go just like Mike Brown
