Andrea Bargnani: Fifty Million Dollar Man

Toronto’s spending spree continues, as they reportedly re-ink their prized forward to a $10 mil/year deal: “The deal, according to NBA front-office sources, would span five seasons starting in 2010-11 and earn Bargnani an estimated $50 million.,,Formally signing Bargnani to an extension this month, coupled with Turkoglu’s forthcoming arrival, would give the Raptors a firm handle on at least two-thirds of their frontline for the next few years, as they continue to try to convince face of the franchise Chris Bosh to commit his long-term future to the team.”

    Get money get paid!

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Yikes – $10 million a year. They might regret that in a couple of years.

  • http://fsjkalf.com Jukai

You know, if they sign Manu and Dirk in 2010, they have a SICK all-euro tournament team.

  • http://www.alloutblitz.com Cordeazy

@ Jukai, isn’t Manu from Argentina? (South America).

  • http://fsjkalf.com Jukai

Cordeazy: Yes, but he played in Europe most of his life, and is constantly with Dirk and Calderon and Hedo on all-euro teams in FIBA listings.

  • http://fsjkalf.com Jukai

Or maybe he’s not, actually. Cause he’s not European. Maybe I’m an idiot. Sorry, I’ve been eating too much paint chips recently, ignore me.

  • al

too much for what he has showed do far. Gallinari is going to be better

  • al

Jukai he reigned Europe (from Bolognia) one season, had a couple more just as good, but that’s it. He grew up in Argentina, improved in Europe and exploded in the NBA

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

    OMG lol… these athletes, STUGOTS!!!!

  • Marco

al you’re wrong. Manu was a beast in europe and not only for a year. When he was with kinder bologna he and danilovic won everything
One year they achieved the grand slam, having won serie A, the italian cup and the euroleague

  • SWIFTboy

At best Bagnani will come to be worth 10 mil a year. At worst…

  • IndyB

Wow he gets Andre Igudala/Danny Granger $? Bargnani is not on thier level… If I am Chris Bosh this doesn’t make me want to stay in Toronto… Both Bosh and Bargnani are too small to play Center and I dont think that you are paying 10 million year for a backup.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

wow. the more i think about barg playing center the more i wish the raps went and tried to sign chris andersen.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

This one is downright silly, so much so that I doubt it’s true. $6M is already a number I’d rather not go up to if I were Raptors management. $10M? For Bargs?? What has he done??? Oh the silliness.

Someone may need to check on Shawn Marion’s well-being.

OMGosshh, how many times do i have to say it….Euros don’t equal wins!!

  • underdog

O.M.G. 10 million USD /year for Andrea Bargnani? Bryan Colangelo is out of his damn mind.

  • http://fsjkalf.com Jukai

Hollywud15: The entire roster of San Antonio would like a word with you.

This is a good deal, because now the NBA rates talent on potential. If Bargs becomes an all-star, wouldn’t all of you be saying this was a good deal. The guy can shoot put it on the floor and block shots. Just little improvements are needed.

  • raptorsfan

great choice, without bosh and with a C near him ora an interior PF he is gonna score easily 25ppg

    lol @ Jukai…
Bargnani may have potential but seriously, why not give him 6 mil a year, then when he “grows into an all-star” this will be a great deal. Now, since he’ll be making 8 figures, he is expected to be an all-star. anything short and this deal sucks for TDot.

  • a_whiteman

Thank you colangelo for confirming that you don’t want to re sign bosh, now we (bosh fans) can all get what we want which is him teaming with flash or lbj for 2010/2011. So once again, thank you mr colangelo!!!

Great, they have nobody in their frontline that can deal with bangers on the defensive end. Who’s guarding the Dwights and the Shaqs? Remember when Dwight was beasting for 20-20s every game in last year’s first round against Toronto? I do. Bargs is a 4… not a 3 and not a 5. The only problem is that TO’s best player happens to be a 4 as well. Terrible. They drafted him because they thought he could play the 3, turns out he can’t so they convinced themselves that he can be a stretch center. whatever the eff that means. TO is gonna get ABUSED downlow with 3 softies (albeit very skilled) in the frontcourt.

  • geoff

he will be an allstar for at least 3 of those years, or at the very least deserve to be one. this is a great deal because this guy is going to explode very soon. how can you say a 7 ft center who blocks shots – improving – who drains shots from literally everywhere with ease, finishes at the rim – improving – and has a better then decent handle is not at iggys level?? iggy is a pretty good wing player on an otherwise bad team, and has mush less upside then andrea

  • Nick Adams

Money well spent. Not now, but in 2 years, that will be a bargain. Oh, & 1/2 the people commenting on Bargs probably saw him once if at all last season …

  • La Maravilla

Men what the hell toronto GM is smoking on this is the worst deal ever they should of spend all that money on my boy CB4 not on this bum ass dude

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I don’t understand this. I’m from Toronto and I still he’s not worth that much. And plus, why use so much when you’re trying to save money for Hedo and/or another Free Agent?

  • http://www.slamonline.com The Starks Knight

I watched Andrea play last season and his offensive decision making combined with his deer-in-the-headlights defense made my eyes bleed. I really hope he realizes all that “upside” within the next season or two. Oh yeah he should be a MUCH better rebounder. What a terrible signing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Detroit only paid CHarlie V around 35 million and he’s about the same talent wise as Andrea. Was Andrea getting a ton of interest elsewhere? It seems like they could have paid him WAY less…

  • vmcb

Bargnani played pretty well last season when JO got injured and was later traded. 20 ppg, 5 rpg, 1 bpg, while shooting 50% from the floor is pretty decent if you ask me. I expect he’ll be worth $10 million a year pretty soon.

  • AZ

Are you serious? 50m is a GREAT deal. First of all we lock him up for 5 years. Second of all, how many 7 foot centers do you see getting contracts way above their worth? Andrew Bogut got 5 years/60m, and Sammy D got something around the same putting up 8 and 8. Give me a break, the dude is not even close to his ceiling and he’s already putting up 18/7.

  • bashmo

vmcb he didnt avg 20 pts, he avgd 15.4 or something. He’s pretty great, to be honest. If he grabs some post moves, and shoots a bit less, and starts bulking up, he can be a dominant force, my word.

  • Rusty

hes alright but hes not real

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Andrea deserves to be locked in long-term. He’s got loads of potential. He DOES need to improve though. He needs to learn some post moves, definitely. Most importantly, though, he needs to rebound the ball WAY better. I mean, he’s 7 ft. tall, anything short of 8-10 rebounds a game is unacceptable, especially since he’s going to play the center spot next year.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Jukai: Right, because Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli are totally European.

  • http://www.mynameinblue.blogspot.com Hisham

this is clearly a signing for this to come. Overpaid next season maybe, but in the seasons after that, it is not a very big reach to say that he’ll be worth it. It’s not like they gave him max. I like this. Although it makes me wonder how seriously they’re going to try and keep bosh after next season.

  • rikson

    Thats just crazy…

  • ianblu1

He averaged 15.4ppg over the season, 19.3ppg after the all-star break.
That Jerome James got 30 mil over 5 to sit on the end of bench tells you that 7-footers get paid on potential. KG got 126 mil a season after he averaged 17ppg (turns out it was a pretty good deal).
I would pay what they paid for 19/6-which he has already shown he can produce- and if he develops into a 22/7 player this contract will be a huge bargain.
