Coach Drexler?

Clyde the Glide wants to lead men into battle: “Drexler, still one of the most popular sports figures in Houston, is getting antsy again after four years of doing TV color commentary for Rockets games, just biding his time before beginning his NBA coaching career. Drexler, 47, starred as a high-school, college and NBA player – all in the city — and it only makes sense that one day he would be coaching here again. ‘I’m going to coach in the NBA. I don’t know where, but I am. And I’ll be a good one,’ Drexler said. “When I turn 50, that’s what I’ll be doing. The timing will be perfect.’”

    Go for it Glide.

If Doc Rivers, Scott Skiles, Avery Johnson and Micheal Curry are coaching or have coached teams, then certainly Drexler can do it.

I’d like to see this happen. Drexler, besides being a class-act, is also very funny, so that should make up for some interesting press conferences.

i guess mj will have come down from the front office and humiliate him, then

I think Clyde is underestimating all the work that goes into coaching. You have to pay your dues.

He was a head coach in Houston already…at University of Houston. He went 19-37. Not a great program, but still a pretty terrible record considering they play in a mediocre conference and his status in the program should have made recruiting easy. Mark Jackson should definitely get an NBA job before Clyde, IMO.

I had forgotten about that, Ben. Good catch.

I also agree with Clyde on him being a good coach, he’s got championship experience, will know how to coach his floor leader, and not to mention he’s got valueable big man knowledge having played with Hakeem throughout the years. Most players turned coaches are point guards, and with respect to each coaches coaching skills, they just don’t seem to develop big men or institute them into the offense as much as they should. Gliding the sidelines sounds good to me..

I’d love to see Clyde as a head coach, but I think he’s much better suited to an assistant coaching job, a la Patrick Ewing, and mentor the floor general of the team.

    MJ needs to coach

I don’t know what makes people think they’re going to be a quality coach in the nba.

I dont like him as a commentator.

Matt Bullard would make a way better coach.

  • Josh D

Sounds great, any job vacancies in the League at the Momment?

It would improve the rockets color commentary drastically.

Mark Jackson needs one. That’s first priority. But Drex…would do a good job, in my opinion. But maybe not Houston. He should try Sacramento or Washington first (just like all other coaches, HA) or something like that. :)

agree with nick, he’s horrible on TV, “like clubbing baby seals”, if you dont know about that google it

  • http://slamonline Blaze

Clyde is one of the nicest dudes ever. I wish him success in whatever he does. Seems like the better the player, the less successful they are at coaching.(Magic, Isiah, Drexler@NCAA level) Chris Dudley would be the greatest coach ever.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

RV: I didn’t mind the seal clubbing. I’m more bothered by begining every phrase “Now that’s what I call…” It’s infuriating. “Now that’s what I call… inserting luther head into the game. Now that’s what I call…a defensive three second violation.” etc, etc.
