Gortat Will Remain in Orlando

Now this is something to smile about if you’re a Magic fan. Not only did the Magic take Brandon Bass from the Mavs, but they killed Dallas’ hopes of adding size by matching Gortat’s offer sheet. Big Props to GM Otis Smith for some sly strategy: “An NBA source has told the Orlando Sentinel that the Orlando Magic will match the five-year, $34-million offer sheet extended by the Dallas Mavericks to Marcin Gortat and thus retain him. The team would not be able to trade him until Dec. 15, at the earliest, if that’s what the team wants to do.”

Sticky contract situation. The Magic are well over the luxury tax threshold, but they didn’t have any other options. After losing Battie, they needed to bring back Grotat.

  • NBA kid

this will really help orlando, they’ve got depth at nearly every position

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

That’s HUGE! I was really high on Gortat after the playoffs, he should have played more in the Finals. Then again, SVG is prolly the worst coach in the L for subs. Hiring a substitutions coordinator wouldn’t be a abd thing for Orlando. I’m only half-joking. Great at Xs and Os, sucks at subbing.

great move by otis, they are now a better team than last year. only issue is what will the starting 5 look like. jameer, vc, shard, dwight. and ? pietrus? or is he still comin off the bench. will bass start and move shard to the 3? we will see

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Oh.. and Ryand Anderson can get really comfortable now. He won’t see the floor. Ever.

  • Blue

You’ll never find me upset about Mark Cuban getting out foxxed…

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

listen, this is for all the svg sub pattern haters. if you got your all star pg back right before the finals, you would have to pick the all star. either way you choose, if you dont win it all, you made a mistake. that was a no win situation for svg. if they lost playing mostly skip, everyone would say, why didnt he play allstar jameer more? but thats the past, they are a much better team this year, and the favs to come out of the east.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi Twersky

they can’t trade him for a year, and aren’t allowed to deal him to Dallas Period. I like him, but….

  • Stevallica

All The Orlando Sentinel could say it was an NBA source? Seems to me they have been reading the Magic forums and running with this.

  • http://Mavs mavs

Wow ! That is hugh ! Grtat will Sit all the time that s so easy ! Happy for him more buck! Magic is big mistake. hahaha

  • adams

When you google “4 points 4 rebounds” Marcin Gortat’s career stats page is the first link. True story.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I know the Shaq and Sheed signings where a little more sexy, but Orlando is STILL the team to beat in the East.

  • larrylegend

life as a gm is good, spending money that’s not yours…this will kill the magic in the near future.

  • http://sbernard22@cfl.rr.com syllio bernard

now you all know ,why otis ,is going to be the next , president of the uniteds stateof america

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

brad long: no. they lost turk, alston, lee. they add vince, bass. that’s a downgrade. and they lost their matchup advantage. they’re a conventional team now. hedo won’t do well it TO but he was integral to their system. nelson is not and was never the creator. / tarzan: this is not even about nelson/alston. how about everyone but dwight, shard and hedo getting their minutes yanked around? from a game-to-game basis, nelson, alston, pietrus, lee, gortat, reddick, battie and johnson played could play from zero to 30 mins. that’s insane. you need a set rotation come march in the nba to be succesful.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Don’t forget adding a fully healthy jameer z. I don’t know if they’re the team to beat but I think they got better I don’t know what people are on but vince is an upgrade over turk , 20 5 and 5 are nothing to sneeze at. What the magic really need is a real power foward to rebound and defend so shard can slide back to the three. Vince is going to set it off this year.

  • henry

lol @ adams, i cant believe i actually tried it and it did pop up… i hate the mavs, so i am VERY please to hear this. time to rub it in my friends’ faces

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Shard was a 3 playing the 4 all season long last year. By Bringing in Bass they’ll offically have someone besides Dwight who will give them toughness and actually attempt to post up and rebound. I’m not saying Bass is an all-star, I’m just saying he’s gonna be important to their success next year. I’m excited to see what Vince can do on a contender as well.

  • dhowardmagic

The Magic will be very dangerous next year. Every starter (Nelson, Vince, Shard, Bass, Dwight) has one good back-up (Anthony Johnson, JJ Redick, Pietrus, Ryan Anderson, Gortat). I like that line-up.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

brad, have you seen shard’s dribble-drives? he is NOT a 3, he’s a tall shooter. his handles are shaky at best. if shard is a 3 then bargs is a 3. vince is better than hedo but hedo had more value to the magic. the playmaking skills that he brought to the table will be sorely missed. vince can only create for himself.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Vince has averaged 4.3 assists per game in 10 yrs. Hedo has avg. 2.7. The only thing Hedo creates is goofy off balance jumpers for himself. His assist numbers last season where bloated because he played with the human garbage disposal Dwight Howard.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

And Z, your probably right. Bargs would best be suited at the 3.

  • Rusty

@ adams and henry, I tried it aswell haha, how did you work that out?

  • jose

    adams and henry: haha.thats cool

  • niQ

Everyone kept talking about how Orlando wouldn’t match the offer. They really going all out this coming season.

  • D12FSU

this is for Z……did i miss something, or did orlando not just go to the finals beating two 60 win teams along the way….because of this signing, the cavs are now 3rd favorite in the east…im gonna say a healthy celtic team is the favorite..HEALTHY..but theres absolutely no reason why orlando cant get back to the finals with this team

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The question is – Which Vince Carter does Vince Carter want to be this season?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

brad, it is about much, much more than assists. hedo made their offense go. he was the initiator. i don’t know if vince can/is willing to do that, he has never really done it. d12fsu: of course, i won’t convince you that orlando is the 3rd best team in the east. but last year’s magic have nothing to do with this year’s magic. they didn’t improve, they retooled as in completely changing the team’s make up. i’ll wait and see.

That retching sound you hear through your internets is me trying very hard not to throw up in my mouth. I knew something like this would happen to Dallas when i read that they OFFERED him a contract. I knew giving Bass away for a bag of peanuts would come back to bite the Mavs in the butt, i just knew it. Now they’ll be in scramble mode to get at least one serviceable lowpost banger and there’s only a handfull left unsigned, and non who fit in their salary range. So to summarize, Mavs got back a 36 year old leader without a reliable outside shot and who no longer can penetrate at will against most nba teams, and got the Matrix to join the team, which three seasons ago would have been cause for celebration but now, who knows what happens when Marion sees that on Offense he’s option number 4? Pouting? you betcha. Aaaaand they let their most promising backup forward leave for Orlando, thus making them even better than last year (believe me, Vince from 08/09 is an improvement over Hedo in nearly all aspects). Dallas now has to re-sign that Hollins kid who isn’t the answer in the post and have even more pressure on Dirk in the lowpost since Eric the Damp is a waste of air on the court. Luvlé, Cubes. Very well done. Glad you didn’t chase McDyess or Milsap now?

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

this whole situation is making me very angry.

  • SK

Not good for Dallas, but at least they don’t have too look at Gortat’s contract in year 3 and say “maybe we shouldn’t have done this”. But giving Marion 5 years? Unnecessary.

This is good for the fans of Orlando. It shows they really feel they’re one of the few teams in the title chase next season. But again, in year 2 or 3 out of 5 they might not think this is so great. He’s not worth this money.

  • http://www.inbox.lv support Georgia

in my opinion orlando shouldn’t have traded for carter(lee was developing very nicely) and should of kept Turk, though there can be said nothing about the bargain 18mil/4year addition of Bass and resigning of a quality backup as Gortat, let’s hope Otis proves ous wrong

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

The Bass signing will be huge for Orlando. And that Ryan Anderson kid thrown into the Vince deal is a legit shooter, and more of a PF than Shard, who I’m guessing will mostly play SF this year. So they’ll have the ability to keep really spreading the floor with shooters on the wings if they want. I think Orlando will be the best team in the East if Dwight is able to improve at all offensively, in the Cleveland series they did a great job getting him the ball in motion, where he was Amare-like, unstoppable attacking the rim.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

They still need a backup PG…

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

@Dacre: if he is the Vince of the last 4 years, Orlando will be fine.

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

for what it’s worth, Z is correct and Brad is wrong. Hedo, like Pippen, would play point forward at sporatic times in a game to throw off another team’s offense, and it worked amazingly against the Celts and the Cavs. I think the Magic downgraded the moment they could not keep Hedo.

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Actually, the Hedo trade was probably best for Cleveland

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

This is a ridiculous amount of money for someone averaging 4 points a game and a couple boards. Just goes to show anyone in the L can make a crap ton of money if teams are desperate. This is bringing back terrible memories when Boston signed Scalabrine, essentially the team’s mascot now, to a 5-year deal worth 15 million. I mean you can get more for your dollar elsewhere…

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Have to agree with Z on this one – the Magic aren’t necessarily better. Losing Turk AND Rafer hurts the most, because this team is now without a legit ball handler. Jameer is a good PG but he’s more shooter than distributor. The Magic are now a lot more top-heavy… but are they a better team?

  • riggs

4 points 4 rebounds hahahaha that was a good one.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

VC is without a doubt better at Hedo in essentially every which way. But Hedo had a niche in this team, as point forward, because their starting PG isn’t a terribly good distributor. So even if Orlando has a added a hell of a scorer in Vince, who’s going to pass the ball? I think the problem right now is of “balance”, not talent or absolute ideas of being better or worse. This is a team right now with lots of frontcourt depth and a stacked starting five. But with the loss of Lee and Alston and Hedo, their backcourt is threadbare. And so would their front court have been, had they not resigned Gortat.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Now all they need is a backup PG. Sorry Anthony.

  • Josh D

    Why december 15?
