Odom/Lakers Negotiations Hitting a Snag

Yesterday, things seemed sunny. Today, not so much: “Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who improved on his offer of $8 million a season to Odom, is getting frustrated and is thinking about pulling the deal off the table soon. Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak talked at halftime of a game between the Lakers and Clippers on Monday in Las Vegas at the summer league, saying that the talks with Odom left him ‘not as hopeful as I was on Friday.’ When asked why, Kupchak said, ‘Just a feeling you get. Right now, I’m not sure we’re on the same page.’”

If Lamar leaves, I’m taking the Spurs to win the Western Conference.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

wasn’t expecting that at all. apparently the mavs and heat are interested. i thought odom had no leverage, oops.

  • http://slamonline.com DONONE

    niceeeeeee…
melo billups nene k-mart and afflalo all the way bay bay

  • Krishan

    D@amn it…

  • Dee

if he doesn’t come back there is no way we repeat. I mean think about it you over pay for sasha vubitch and baby drew, but you won’t play lo what he deserves. I mean this isn’t trevor with a bad foot or shaq demanding to be paid. He has done everything we have asked and now it is time to break bread!!!!!!
Pay the candy man/ lil lloyd

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

Paging Mark Cuban. IMing Cubes. Eff a salary cap, get on this… NOW. Pay him whatever he needs for 3-4 seasons. Think of this starting 5: Ason-Josh-Matrix-Odom-Nowitzki. Oh my…… Who cares if there are 3 headcases in that mix, the pampering players receive in Dallas plus Rick’s coaching will mellow em all out.

  • GAMBLER

    ODOM, MAVS, HELL YES

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

That might work, Dark. He’d fit in well there.

  • riggs

he’d also stop being a d*ck on the court.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I could see him playing the 3 for Portland too if UTH decides to match for Milsapp.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

Lamar to Portland? Geez, talk about an overabundance of riches. Scoop him up, Mavs!

  • Quail

mavs dont need him. Dirk could never play Center. hell naw. blazers all the way. he could play the 3 there. and he could take a tiny bit of the load of Brandon Roy.

  • diggsboy

I don’t see Mavs or Miami they can only offer the mid-level exemption unless he’s bad at math that means less money. Also for a guy who only really showed up for half the playoffs he’s asking alot. If he does go oh well good luck trying to get another ring

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

actually Dirk has regularly played the 5, depending on rotations, over the years. As much as “haters” like to demean his value, Nowitzki is stiil the major matchup nightmare for most Nba teams to defend. So yeah, Dirk as a 5 with the reboundhappy Odom/Marion Combo next to him would be a great lineup for about 20-25 mins a game.

  • a_whiteman

As long as we keep him out of la, I’d like to see him in port or wit my boys in dallas

  • Tony

    Cavaliers could use him

  • Yesse

LA cant really lose Lamar. That offer is pathetic by Lakers.Should be atleast 11 million a year.Whats up with Lakers organisation?Give him a bigger deal!

  • seven deuce

See Lamar, Orlando wouldn’t have put you through this. It’s not too late dude!

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

back to the mia would be nice. but i dont think they have the money.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

“I don’t know. If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, it might be sunny,”

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

I’m with Darksaber, that starting five would put the Mavs seriously back in the mix.

  • Josh D

    Yes!

  • Stickz

11 mil, for a bench player? No way! he better get his tail off his shoulders and make that money! Unless he wants to go to Memphis!

  • Jayphil

What leverage does he have, if the Lakers are offering $9 mill per and no one else is offering over $6? Don’t be an idiot, L.O.

  • tavoris

Darksaber…if they (Mavs) signed Lamar, then Jason Terry’s minutes would evaporate. Inasmuch, then there would be NO WAY Dirk doesn’t get double-teamed on EVERY possession (as Terry is the only other reliable shooter on the team)

  • Clockwork

Don’t the Pistons have like a billion dollars to spend? But I guess he’s sorta like the same player as Charlie V…plus there’s no beach in Detroit is there?

  • tavoris

Clockwork…Odom kinda replicates Prince and CV.

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Suns could use a four who likes to play the three who is bad for chemistry and demands a lot of shots and money and playing time who takes a lot of shots far outside his range.

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Wait, why did saying that seem familier…?

  • chingy

odom: “if the cavs can offer varejao 8-10 mil/year, I surely can get more than 8 mil!”

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

dont hate on matrix, he made those suns teams, he was the one who allowed them to play that style

  • chingy

the mavs would be sick with odom tho

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

to everyone saying that odom should take the paycut for the greater good of the team… how about jerry buss taking a little bit out of his profit margin for the greater good of the team? why is the argument always tilted against the players and not the owners (who are making far, far more) / anyone calling odom a bench player is lying to himself. he’s as much of a bench player as manu and jet. bynum starts games but he’s essentially the 6th man and gets zero crunch time minutes.

  • ripriprip

Ha ha. Kiss your conference title goodbye LA.

  • chingy

    co-sign Z

  • http://slamonline.com negetivekreep

Odom to Mavs sounds interesting..but 8 mill to come off the bench & Collect chip(s) in L.A. Ain’t soo bad neither. Still money talks. losing Ariza hurt, but at least the consolation was Artest. Lose Odom and who you gonna match up with Sheed? Advantage Boston.

  • duncan21

Z has the point on lock. I’d take Odom over Varejaoasdfhj and to expect to make money than a lesser talented player?

  • Quail

@Darksaber: i see where ur comin from, but i meant defensively. he cant defend people like D12 or Shaq or Yao if he comes back. other than that, he could fare well at the 5.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Quail: Those guys can’t defend Dirk, either. Those three are the “last real centers” left in the league (a huge compliment), but they are definitely not perimeter defenders.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

@tavoris, you mean he’d get doubleteamed like he has been for the last decade or so? And still scored 23-25 a game? And a healthy Josh Howard is a more reliable scoring option than JET II, who stank up the joint on countless occasdions during the last playoffs. As soon as Terry received that 6th man award, his game went fishing.

  • http://kingakai.com Alpha-bet

Why are the Lakers so cheap? They got bailed out I think by getting Artest when losing Ariza. Unless they have something up their sleeve similar if they lose Odom.

  • RomeyRome

bailed out or not they got a guy (artest) that is right now head an shoulders better than ariza is offensively an just as good if not better defensively. They should give L.O. at least 8 no more than 9 in my opinion. From what i hear it would be a sign an trade with either dallas or the heat involving beasley and howard.

  • stokesey

The reason Varejao got 10mil per is because the cavs gm is a knucklehead, everyone on the planet knows he isnt worth that much, Mitch aint given L.O that much paper
By stories id heard Lakers with-drew there offer today of 9mil… haha you go get your 5mil a season somewhere else Lamar…
Why would Lamar hold out?? The Lakers are the only team that could offer him more than the M,L.E and he’s not taking it…

  • jazz

David Lee to the LAKERS. . .get it done!

  • http://slamonline Negetivekreep

End of the day, after all the smokescreen & gamesmenship i’d be shocked if L.O. is not back as a laker. #1 theres not another Ron Ron available for 5 mil a yr and Josh Powells not the answer #2 Lamars agent cant be as bad as Arizas. Wich is why this process is taking longer and being done much more quietly. And #3 both sides have something they want (specifically) from the other.
