Sorry, Blazers. Hedo Now Going to Toronto

Turkoglu changed his mind, and will reportedly now become a Raptor: “Free agent Hedo Turkoglu has backed out of his commitment to the Portland Trail Blazers and plans to sign with the Toronto Raptors, a source close to the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night. Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and could be headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion, Carlos Delfino and Anthony Parker – to create the cap space for Turkoglu.”

    its all about the benjamins…

that’ll be great until Bosh bolts in 2010

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

    whoa!
Man, even though the season is over, I love July man. This is crazy.

  • http://www.sprint.com/pre dma

this is going to hurt turk’s reputation. how funny is this though. turk going to canada and vince going to orlando. that’ll be some nice storylines when they play each other for the next 4-5 years in the playoffs. assuming raptors don’t continue to suck.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

    I wouldn’t assume that yet….

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Anthony Parker to the Cavs

  • Tyrone Shoelaces

sick, this is exactly the kind of player the raptors needed to compliment bosh, definite upgrade over marion, hurts that anthony parker can’t re-sign, but hopefully raps opt to trade for a high profile bench scorer somewhere down the road.

How does this hurt Turk’s reputation.

Happy wife, 6 more million, international player base he can get along with, nice city to live in, and a chance to prove himself without D12.

I would have done the same thing. Is Rudy still gonna be mad?

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

More importantly – is this move enough to keep Bosh around for a few more years?

  • http://nba.com Reflex

Call me naive but is there really ad ifference between earning $45m over 5 years and $56m, the reason I say this is that if I was Hedo, I’d rsther stay with a Championship contender for less than to join a lottery team (Toronto will be in the lottery next year). I’ll never understand why players value an extra million or two a year over winning.

  • ave. joe

Yeah hopefully Rudy will still be mad and come play for Toronto too…just to piss of the Blazers.

  • http://www.fkbnation.com reanrnjeji

How can someone not understand $11 million difference! (posted by Reflex). Especially when there is NO guarantee of a championship anywhere. There is a HUGE difference in a COUPLE million, and 11, especially when this is the last time you’ll come close to making this kind of $

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    NICE!!! YES!!! HOORAY!!!!!

  • tk

GREAT GREAT POINT REFLEX! I thought the same thing the year ben wallace left detroit for the chi over an extra 3 mil. Where’s the love for the game? UR STILL A MILLIONAIRE!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

This is great for the Raptors.
    Starting line-up:
    1. Calderon
    2. DeRozan
    3. Turkeyglue
    4. Bosh
    5. Bargnani
That’s a nice line-up right there. I hope Anthony Parker can return, but from the article it says he won’t be able to… Who knows though? He was one of my team favorites these past few years and he’s proven himself competitive. Best of luck to him and I know he’ll find a suitable team.

  • Exile

Teddy: Where is the rebounding? Where is the defence? Marion would have been a better fit. I like “Turkeyglue” but I don’t see this being a solid step up.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Exile: Wait, are you serious?? You want MARION for DEFENSE? Marion hasn’t played a lick of defense.. well, ever.
I understand your concern though, the defense isn’t going to be too great, but with a Brian Colangelo built roster, what can you expect? Turkoglu is a much better defender than Marion, I’ll tell you that right now; we’ve already moved a step up. Turkoglu brings an All-Star caliber (should have been picked two years in a row) scorer who can create his own shot. This is EXACTLY what the Raptors need; a slasher who can knock down shots and take pressure off our frontcourt bigs. Marion on the other hand, needs a Steve Nash-type point guard to set him up.
Now add in Demar DeRozan, who has the potential to be a Vince Carter-type player? As a starter? He’s going to develop faster and sooner than expected. This is a great step forward for the Raptors. Brian Colangelo did a heck of a job this offseason, I’ll give him that.
If you want a concern now, its the Raptors’ non-existent bench.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

My goodness, this definitely makes me feel better, after the Knicks passed on Jennings and the Rockets let Ron-Ron go… I’m still sad about those but Hedo coming to Toronto and drafting DeRozan almost makes up for those. Almost.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

ARgh, I have to post another comment after my huge one before.
    Real quick:
Toronto is NOT a European-type city, its more similar to New York City and other big cities in the US.
A European-type city in Canada would be Montreal.

  • niQ

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.. i wanted marion to stay if anything!!1. but.. i guess hedo DOES give us a better perimeter shooter…

  • niQ

on another note. it appears that hedo has changed his mind before.. “Five years ago, Turkoglu was close to signing with the Phoenix Suns that Colangelo was running, but changed his mind and went to the Orlando Magic.”

  • Toronto Canada

actually Toronto is way more diverse than New York City i live here theres a neighborhood for every european country Just take a look at how crazy we r for TFC football!!!

  • Flight

Colangelo…always earning his paycheck. Hopefully this move turns out for him.

  • rav

teddy – toronto’s more european-style than most north american cities, lots of different cultures mix there, over 150 different nationalities there (last time i was there i went to a bar downtown to watch liverpool v barca game at 3pm on a wednesday and there were about 150 people in there, quite a few ex-pats too so there are quite a lot of europeans in the city) and in terms of the city’s culture a european person could adapt to life there far more easily than most US cities (NY and LA aside) and weather aside is one of the most perfect cities on the planet

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

@ Teddy-the-Bear: Marion plays defense; or at least he used to. Remember on the ’05 Suns? He was left to defend tons of fast breaks; one of the only guys to get back on D. He was/is an excellent defender. Only one year of his career did he average less than 1 steal per game; his rookie season where he averaged .8. The other years he’s averaged 1., 1.8, 2.3, 2.1, 2.0, 2.0, 2.0, 2.0, 1.9, 1.4 and 1.1. The guy gets blocks as well…..in his career respectively: 1.0, 1.4, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 1.5, 1.5, .9, 1.1, .8. I know that blocks/steals aren’t the whole of defense, but his fastbreak D is superb and weak side D is great as well. He’s a great perimeter and post-up defender. Marion would definitely be the defensive pick here.

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

@ rav: The weather is perfect if you don’t mind being really cold and really snowy.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Well, this makes a hell of alot more sense than Portland. Unless Portland can sign a veteran point guard not named Steve Blake or Kobe or LeBron they just need to stand pat and let the young talent grow up a little bit.

  • Matthew Lopez

i don’t like this signing, there will be if possible, worse defense to come from the raptors. But, if portland really really wants turkoglu, maybe the blazers sign marion, and then trade marion and let’s say rudy for hedo. The Blazers get who they really want, the Raps get Marion, plus a solid swingman who’s played with jose, everybody’s happy if this happens. Delfino and Rudy back up DeRozan and Marion. This will be the blazers starting lineup:
Blake(probably Miller though), Roy, Hedo, Alridge, and Oden
Bench: Bayless, Webster, Batum, Outlaw, and Pryzbilla.
If the marion and rudy for hedo trade were to happen, both teams would improve and everybody wins.

  • http://Nicekicks.com Hollywud15

How are u ppl claiming to be raptors fans excited about this?? we’re paying 56 mil to a player who has never made an allstar team and is already 30 yrs old (which means he Aint Gettin better). now we handcuff ourselves with another huge contract that we will regret in 2 years. Thanks Brian!

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

^Yeah, but the Raptors only chance of keeping Bosh in town next year is if they win now, which means paying way to much for a proven talent. Look at Shaq going to cleveland. Because of his bloated one year deal they missed out on signing Ariza and are probably done in the free agent market. Rasheed Wallace ain’t going there for the mid-level.

  • rav

one thing that no-one has mentioned here – in the last 20 years only one big money FA acquisition has led their team to a title, and that was shaq. now whilst hedo will make toronto better, will they become a top team in the east because of him – no. and of course its always a bad idea to sign players who’s joining you for financial reasons (or at least that is one of their main motivations for joining), esp on a 5 year deal.

  • rav

@ Brad – shaq’s deal only has a year left, so they’ll have around $35m worth of cap space (approx $20m if lebron signs a max extension) for 2010, so they should be pretty well set for 2010 should lebron stay. and i’m pretty sure the offers coming sheed’s way are MLEs?

  • rav

plus they only have 10 players so they’re going to have to get at least one or two FA’s, but likely insignificant players

  • Canuck

As a Raps fan this move definitely ticks me off. I really wanted Colangelo to trade Bosh this summer for young pieces/draft picks, so they can actually rebuild. They keep signing veterans, when THEY ARE NOT WINNING.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty aka Free Lester Hudson

Would have rather seen that money go to BG, and play Derozan at the 3. Hedo had some terrible shooting slumps in the playoffs. Atleast they didnt give him Rashard money.

  • http://slamonline.com s.e.a.n

@moose, it only snows for 4 months in toronto…

  • AZ

Nash was 30 years old when Colangelo signed him in Phx a few years ago, and look at how that turned out!

  • vtrobot

i like this because i didn’t want to see the chemistry of the blazers disrupted. turk is OK, but toronto ain’t gonna do anything again next year.

  • Quail

so will marion go to portland then?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ rav: Adding Hedo Turkoglu is going to make the Raptors a sure top 5 in the East.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

damn, does that mean that any signing can be hi-jacked before july 8? ferry, go over the MLE for ariza!! the angle that hasn’t been covered with the ariza signing is that now that he already has a ring, maybe he wants to be a star, a 20 ppg guy. that only happens in houston, not cleveland or LA.

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

    @ s.e.a.n.: My point exactly.

  • D12FSU

this makes toronto a 7-8 seed at best

  • K

for everyone who says the “player x should’ve taken less money to play for a contender” line…i agree sometimes…but turning down an extra $11million?!? (45 from portland vs 56 from tor) any of u guys who says u wouldnt take that are lying or dumb…and its not like this is hedo’s 3rd-4th biggg contract…its his 1st major payday…u guys need to realize that extra $11million could easily turn itself into 45-50 million by the time his kids have kids…and especially in this economy, u’d be stupod not to take an extra 8 figures

  • K

btw…completely unrelated but steve mcnair has been found shot to death along w/ a female…looks to be a double homicide…damn…RIP

  • K

btw…totally unrealted but steve mcnair has been found shot to death…damn RIP

  • rav

@Teddy – top 5? i’d have boston, cleveland and orlando definitely in the top 5 and tbh i’d have atlanta and miami in there ahead of toronto (and i’d even go as far as saying the bulls and philly are on the same level as them), plus there is the big question mark on how bosh will be next year what with his upending free agency

  • TC21

it doesnt matter where he signs cause he aint gonna win a championship with the lakers getting ron ron lamar planning to resign

  • husky

this just in!!!!!!!!!!!! kobe has been traded to bulls for greg oden, kirk hinrich, and 2010 1st round pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://ballislife.com Moose

    ^Yeah right.^

  • Fly

I guess…..if everything go +ve, Bosh will stay in toronto. If Raptors has a suck season as 08-09, I think BC will trade Bosh away. Marion is an important investment to build a team of Bosh. And mostly Marion only become nothing and will be very difficult part to trade away,if Bosh not goimg to service the raptorslandn. At the other hand, Hedo could be a part of the rebuilding team, after bosh away.

“kobe has been traded to bulls for greg oden”… epic fail

we (blazer fans) didnt want him anyway. Outlaw is our dude, we need to upgrade our pg position. Plus Hedo shoved BRoy in Orlando last year for no reason. Schmuck.

  • Jess

was away for the wknd and was shocked when I saw the paper..I just pray that Colangelo can pull something out of his ass and get AP back..he’s a classy, solid, bench player that all Raps fans would love to have around. And in the case of Blazer fans, I dont mean to sound like an ass, but this is the position that the Raps are usually in, so in a way it is nice haha

  • Pancho

The Raps have no defense now. The Eastern Conference has the best defensive teams, it is still going to be hard for the to win games on the road. So at best I see them fighting for the last playoff spot and failing.

Anybody named teddy-no-hair is crazy. Marion’s all defense, he gets like 10 rebounds at 6’7″, imagine 6’10″? Yeah I know crazy, and blocks, 1.7. anyway, just backin my man Marion up.

    Come back to Phoenix!!!!

and you suck… like the raptors or should I say, baby t-rex’s

  • http://www.slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    Meh.

  • James aka…

We liked marion, he just didn’t like us. He didn’t like losing here, and wouldn’t take 8 per year from us, so turk was plan B. Now Marion can go somewhere possibly for 5.6 a year and sulk a bit more.
