Amazingly, the Refs May Be WORSE Next Season

by Marcel Mutoni

Officiating is one of the few things that NBA fans can agree on universally: It is, for the most part, quite awful. And guess what? Things aren’t looking up; in fact, they could potentially get a lot worse. Awesome!

According to ESPN, the League and its zebras are nowhere near a contract agreement, which means there’s a slight chance that scabs could be used next season to police the games.

The issue, as always, is money. According to the report, the NBA is trying to cut into the refs’ budget rather significantly, and shockingly, they have a problem with that. The nerve of these guys:

The NBA’s current contract with its 60-odd referees runs out next week and the sides appear to be far apart on a new deal, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations. Sept. 1 is the expiration date of the current five-year pact. One source told ESPN.com on Tuesday that — with the league proposing an across-the-board reduction to the referee budget of an estimated 10 percent — the impasse might not be resolved before the start the 2009-10 season.

As of “right now,” according to the source, existing NBA referees “will not be working preseason [or the] regular season.” The proposed cuts to the referee budget are believed to include reductions in travel costs, pension payouts and health benefits in addition to salary cuts.

Of course, it remains to be seen if the refs are willing to stand firm against the League in this wretched economy. But just in case they are, best to prepare yourselves to see the phrase “I could officiate games better than these guys!” come to life in a few months.

well thats a great start to the season

  • Clockwork

Let the players ref themselves…and also keep the score, who needs scorekeepers while we’re at it?

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

poor Dick Bavetta…. now what’s he gonna do? After all those years running up and down the court with guys three times his size, and 5 times younger than him, he has to do…. old people stuff??? Let’s hope this all gets settled soon.

  • TDP

Hire the NCAA officials. Watching March Madness last year really made the NBA refs look f*cking ridiculous. What we need is a Stalin-like purge of these guys (and that one chick).

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Tim Donaghy can let these guys know how to make money on the side.

    /shows self out

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Superstar calls will be outsourced to Mexican immigrants.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I can’t imagine it being much worse.

  • riggs

co-sign TDP, NBA refs are in the lower-level of sports refereeing.

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com CDef28

This isn’t good. Maybe the new refs will give less calls to the superstars. Probably not though.

  • LeoneL

Let retired NBA players do it. LOL

  • Enigmatic

I say if the NBA has a problem with paying their refs, let the people at the NBA Headquarters ref, see how they like it. Not that it would EVER happen, but who wouldn’t pay to see David Stern trying to keep up with the likes of Derrick Rose and Lebron James?

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Well, they do have that instant-replay-camera-plan ready right? Which, could theoretically eliminate the need for a ref in the first place.. Only downside is, PROBABLY more calls would be made since you can see everything happening.

  • Yesse

Can they even be worse than the last time?I bet the players on the league could make better calls. How come the refs can call themselves professionals.Get refs from the olympics or europe.Maybe even Summerleague or D-League.As a matter of fact the 3rd division juniors league refs around here can make better calls than the Nba.Try europe,olympic,summerleague,d-league or NCAA refs.Im tired of LeBron getting away with traveling or Kobe getting fouled too many times.Yes Kobe can get a foul very good, but he isnt suppose to get fouled as much as the refs claim.

Actually, letting former NBA players referee doesn’t sound like a bad idea. It would provide former players who want to stay close to the game an alternative to coaching and they should have an inside knowledge of the game.

  • LebronGOAT

Yeah Let Them Retired Players Ref..

  • LebronGOAT

Yeah Let Them Retired Players Ref.. Welcome Back Mutombo

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Yeah, right. Do you really want Vlade Divac making the flopping calls?

  • UnRel

let the players pay for the refs.. like rec leagues..

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

They need robot referees and laser whistles.

  • Orlando Green

Dick can just make money off pre-game shows where he takes on fat retired players in foot races.

  • Gabe

Dick Vitale should ref every single game.

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

Get rid of refs all together. Call your own fouls like out in the park.

  • bigA2348

O NO!O NO! somebody tell the Phoenix Suns to watch out, They’re Backk! haha but plz David stern no more Donaghy’s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Damn, who could imagine actually wishing for Joey C to be out there yelling at Tim Duncan and being frumpy and arms folded nonstop instead.

  • chintao

Joe Crawford. Nice pick. Yeah, he probably is one of the better ones.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    I’d officiate out there…
it’s about making the right calls.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Its a very difficult job, and you know deep down every guy (or gal) has a favorite.. Hope it gets resolved soon, besides favoring the veteran stars, I think their pretty fair for the most part..

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Anton: If they’re Mexicans LIVING in America as citizens, then its not outsourcing…

  • Big Jim

I know this will be corny, but I ref’d high-school basketball and it is alot harder than it looks. Then again I’m not “professional”.

  • ENDS

It couldnt possibly be worse than the Eastern Conference Finals

  • http://fdjsklf.com Jukai

Teddy: Anton is making a joke, jesus, do you even read anything here anymore?

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

I wish these refs would stop being a pain in the ass! Thier lucky they aint on the unemployment line with the rest of us, so they should be lucky they have jobs at all!

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

And the refs and the league should take out some rules so the player can play real defense and knock the shit out of players when they come in the lane and play aggresive defense

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

We should have any Detroit Bad Boy of all-time ref games!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

I almost went with goofball Dicky B. The man always seemingly in big games. But a ref – player rivalry is too good not to mention. Ostracized then returned when his presence was really missing.
Someone in the barbershop Stern post said ‘can a sister ref some games.’ Violet Palmer is invisible even to the people looking out for exactly her! And she gets bashed by Lang in recaps, always.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

But then you don’t know what you got ’til its gone.

  • JME

Anyone know how much these guys earn?

  • rikson

And while were at it…. lets reintroduce the “traveling”-rule… shall we?!

  • chintao

I tend to agree with Lang about a great many things, but I have no basis for an opinion on Vi Palmer. Do you have one, Blinguo?

  • Rnz

The NBA should make a special referee night like the pistons bad boys referee night, all centers referee night, NBA mascots referee night, NBA Player’s wife referee night..
