2009-10 Schedule Released!

And early intuitions about the future.

by Ryne Nelson

Too much information! We knew the schedule was coming out today, so folks here at the Dome began an early discussion to kick off the day. It was hard talking matchups with this in the background, but we managed a quick list.

You know, nothing too difficult. I walk out to the deli to grab lunch and by the time I return to the computer, the inbox is stuffed with emails from almost half the NBA, telling me every little detail about their schedule for the ’09-10 season.

I pop open my soda, nosh on a sandwich and begin to read. And the information is actually pretty interesting. It’s mostly trivial tidbits, but it sure beats the litany of lunchtime blogs I’m used to reading.

The problem is, I’m an information guy. And when I’m presented with a bunch of data, I get into it like I’m a fantasy commissioner playing for a 30-stack pot. I jump, I swim. I find the deep end. I look for a place to rest. I drown.

That said, I don’t feel like drowning today (or giving you any more whacked-out analogies, or making you wait any longer for this post), so here are the facts that stood out to me about the ’09-10 NBA schedule. Of course, I missed a few things, so fill me in.

What are you looking forward to watching this season?

– The NBA is pushing two things: the Orlando Magic (Orlando has 24 national television games scheduled) and Blake Griffin (13 games featured on national television!).

– OK, so the NBA is pushing a third thing: the Denver Nuggets (29 national TV games!).

– The NBA season tips off on TNT with a double-header, featuring the Magic/Celtics and, wait for it… Lakers/Clippers?! (Blake, you have no excuse if you don’t win the ROY.)

– The NBA dropped the ball on Christmas. Sure there’s the Cavs/Lakers, Blazers/Nuggets and Magic/Celtics (again), but there’s also the Knicks/Heat and Suns/Clippers (The first Christmas game for the Clippers since 1992? Damn, Blake!). Did we already forget about the Celtics/Bulls? If you must show New York, why not pit them against the Suns and set Vegas on fire with a 300 over/under?

– Beginning January 8, the Warriors play 18 of 24 games at home. If that doesn’t please fans, nothing will.

– Do teams play back-to-back sets of home games anymore?

Mid November into December Thru early January ensures a slow burn out of any chance at a playoff birth for the Dubz though, never much of a road team – current history. National Blake Association? Geez. Didn’t even mention there will be two Griffins there with the vs PHX Christmas game. Clippers fever, will people catch it? Will there even be any marquee named players left out there with Blake by Christmas? If Baron Davis manages a turnaround under never leaving Coach Big Dun, the time would def be now.

  • chingy

Suns/Clippers is going to be bad…and what if blake goes down?

  • Ken

I’m stoked the Clips will be on national TV a lot this season. Hopefully Baron will be back in shape.

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

I don’t think we mentioned enough Lakers games.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Go check out a Clippers roster right now though, Baron / Blake / Eric Gordon. And a ton of other Centers (Kaman/Camby) and Guards. Thorton is the one swingman forward. Not an exciting team like the Clippers of old, plus it can go bad quick with injuries and then you’re putting De Andre Jordan and Ricky Davis(!) out there in a starting lineup just like last year, except this time on National TV.

  • TADOne

Donald Sterling and David Stern must be good friends or Sterling has some unflattering pics of the Commish.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

If the Clippers suck, the NBA has no excuse.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

K the NBA has no excuse.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Barkley’s chair during those games, empty, Kenny will spin it around and shadowbox punch em. Chuck will be in the back watching CNN or Tiger or Alabama games.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi Twersky

20+ back-to-back games for Pistons. Why?

  • Kevin K

you guys are going to get fined by the NBA

  • Josh D

Lakers Clippers is a good start to the season, but on Christmas as well as Lakers- Cavs, Magic- Celts, and Blazers-Nuggets, they should have something a little better like Mavs-Spurs and Suns-Knicks( mainly for the entertainment)

That christmas game between LA and CLE is going to be crazy. Does anyone know when the preseason schedule comes out?

  • http://www.nba.com Pardeep

Does the NBA know A.I. is going to the Heat or Knicks because Heat vs Knicks on Christmas? Kobes dropping 40 on opening night

  • chingy

that lakers and clips opening night game will be a blow out of epic proportion…

  • badnewzb8ller

what! more nationally televised games then the lakers?!

  • Clipp Show 714

Last year the Clipps opened at “home” vs the Lakers too. Its as if the L wants to pick the clipps as prey for the Lakers first home game. Would be nice for the clipps to get the upset and say F*ck you back to the L.

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

Will the Lakers be on national TV at all?

  • Remo Williams

@Clipp. the lake show opened against the blazers last year. nice try though.

Blake Griffin Is Gonna Carry The Clippers To The Super Bowl. People Are Gonna Feel Too Bad To Tell Him Its The Wrong Championship For His Team.

    Lakers vs Klippers? wow

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Cavs go 73-9. Book it.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Shht, Anton. People are sleeping on the Cavs because of the way the season ended, that’s good, don’t jinx it. They won 66 games and replaced Ben, Sasha and Wally with Shaq, Parker and Moon.

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

    Lakers 73-9. Book It.

  • http://www.nba.com Pardeep

    Lakers 75-7. BOOK IT.

  • The D Train

oh man, my poor Bulls with a league-high (tied) 23 back-to-backs. Bulls 41-41. Book It.

  • http:///www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Yo Z, you gonna watch all 82? There’s no way I’m missing a second of this gongshow madness of a season.

  • VA

im psyched to see the nuggets play. Ty lawson is gonna make them hella better and a more exciting team to watch.

  • badnewzb8ller

cavs fan are throwin hope on the name and not the game of shaq, cuz he done! stick a fork in that hot dog.you tweeked your llineup to get past the magic but its the celtics you have to worry about. and even if you get to the finals….lakers! cmon now get real!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I heard A.I. is considering signing with Josh Childress’ Euro team for $10m/2 years…. Was on PTI, if this happens they should televise some of those games..

  • http://www.sprint.com/pre dma

i hope griffin gets hurt when kobe dunks on him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

badnewz… there’s no logic to that argument. there’s no tweaking the lineup to get past such and such. shaq is better than ben wallace. anytime you can trade 2 guys that were out of the rotation for a 17-8 center who doubles as a freaking mammooth in the lane. you do it. you mean to tell me that shaq won’t do the job against perk? i’ll let sheed shoot jumpers all day if they want to go small. celts will not win because of sheed outshooting an opponent, the more 3s he takes, the less effective he is.

  • Felix

have to agree with Z. imagine if Shaq, Moon, Parker played Ben, Sasha, and Wally 3 on 3. It would be ugly, and someone on Shaq’s team would probably lose interest or start throwin up crazy half court shots after they were up by fifteen or twenty points

  • Felix

probably shaq. he would be the first to lose interest in killing an outmatched opponenet. he’d be dribbling out on the perimeter or shooting threes just to make it interesting

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I just have to say that Josh-D is an idiot – if he thinks that a Spurs/Mavs match up and a knicks/suns match up is not going to be entertaining…
Also, does anyone else sense that the Clippers are featured WAY too much? Sure Griffin is looking like a lock for ROY but are the clippers going to be worth watching? I don’t think so.

  • http://yahoo.com Logues

knicks vs heat on christmas? david stern must have gotten 2009 and 1999 mixed up

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Rockets split the season 41-41…. please don’t book it.

  • ENDS

I like it! But We needed Lakers Magic on Xmas its tradition

  • D12FSU

Im not saying what the Magic’s record will be…im not a fortune teller like some of you apparently are….but i just dont see a 70 win season happening for anyone…book it?….oh but the Magic do have a very easy chance to start the season 8-0 with the first real test coming in the 9th game against the Cavs …BOOK IT

  • clippsFan

@ Remo Williams. The Clipps DID open against the lakers at home!!! They never said it was opening night for the lakers. Pretty sure clipper fan was aware the lakers opened their season the night before vs por. nice try though…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Hursty, that equaled Playoffs for GSW as the 8th seed, fighting off the Clippers (the NBA’s new fave) to get in, whilst the West and top heavy powerhouses beat each other down for seeding position. But maybe file papers to get Houston into the Eastern conference… 41 wins? 4th seed baby!

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

Five games on Christmas Day is too much. I’ve had to fight with my family for the last 17 years just to get to watch two games, then three. Now five? Doubtful, unless I get sick.

  • Dan vito

Lmao at the kid who says shaq, parker, moon would beat ben, sasha, wally in a game. The way he talks, it’s like he’s got an all star center on his team. Not someone who couldn’t even take a stacked suns team to the playoffs as an 8th seed. 17 n 8 means nothing if he didn’t win. By the way, if you actually watched sun’s games last year, you would know they were dumping the ball into shaq BIG MISTAKE.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

  • badnewzb8ller

shaq will lead the leauge Off 3 secs. this addition will prove to be a disaster.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

the khristmas games should be fun

  • jdote

Idk if the suns were stacked. they were old, but not stacked.. especially with amare only playing 53 games last year. im lookin desperately for a sleeper team…clippers with a healthy BD?

The Magic got a Franchise Record 24 appearences on Nat. TV?! Even I a huge Magic fan was surprised that a team that had Shaq, Penny Tmac had never had this much expossure till now. GUESS WHO DAVID STERN IS TRYING TO PUSH NOW! And Guess who’s lovin’ it like MickeyDs

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

i agree with vincent thomas, klippers could be a top 7-9 in the west.

  • Damir

    Clippers on national tv…??
