Kenyon Martin: Nuggets > Lakers

by Marcel Mutoni

Over the past two seasons, Los Angeles and Denver have met in the postseason. Both times, the Nuggets were sent packing. According to Kenyon Martin, Denver’s emotional forward, the results of those postseason battles are not indicative of which squad is superior.

Kenyon is convinced that his Nuggets are the better team, and went on the radio to declare his stance.

From SRI:

I think guys know that we were right there and everybody in that locker room and in the organization feels we were a better team than the Lakers.

Everybody feels we were a better team than the Lakers and no one can tell me anything different. No one.”

Kenyon also believes in the existence of the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, and no one can tell him any different. No one.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Kenyon has mouthed off when asked discussing the Lakers, and it certainly won’t be the last. Facts be damned.

TADOne, with those statements with who is better (individually) I’m curious as to how you decided the Lakers were better? Is it because of the 2 guard and the 4 where LA has Kobe and Pau, and coaching where LA is obviously superior? Is that enough to make them a better team? Because I agree with what you say, with the exception of the Bench Mob part. LMK!

Outside of extreme match-up issues, better team wins 7-game series.

J-Dizzle: my point is, if you saw the Nuggets in the playoffs last year BEFORE LA, they were a unstopable force that was beating teams by 20-40 points. When they played LA, they changed their playing style because they didnt think they could play like that against LA. They didnt even try to dominate LA, because they were scared of the reputation of LA. Metaphorically speaking they tried to fix something that wasnt broken and failed. That is why LA beat them, and since George Karl doesnt really learn too much from his mistakes, that is why LA will beat them again.

Klav: Because they actually won it all last year.

He didn’t say the Nuggs ARE better than the Lakers, he said they WERE better than the lakers.

As a team, he is correct. Denver was a better team last year…but that team fell apart and couldn’t recover at the time the Lakers decided to pull together. Play that series one week earlier, and the Nuggets possibly sweep.

How the fack, were they the better team. They weren’t first in the West. They had less wins then the Lakers. They lost a series to the LAKERS. And the LAKERS won the ship’. Where does this make sense. And BET … are you retarted? They lost because of intimidation lol. Denver are the tough thugs of the NBA are they not? JR, Martin, big bad Jones. GTFOH, I know you hate the Lakers but… why not say you are good with the ladies or something. It is just as ridiculous.
Wait … sorry, I was talking BULLsh!t. The Thuggettes were the best team in History last year. As it was seen through out the regular season and playoffs. They will go down as the best team to win the champi … GTFOH.

For a guy who (unfortunately) doesn’t visit the comment section as frequent as he used (and wants) to, BETCATS just reminded me why I miss coming here. While James the balla stuttering just reminded me why I should cherish my busy schedule and me not wasting my time reading through the comment section.

All this coulda, shoulda, woulda stuff that Nuggets fanboys are throwing out there is hilarious to me. That might work for a 1 game series, but the reason why there is a 7 game series is because the better team wins in that format. Get over it, and I’m not even a Lakers fan. Didn’t Dhantay Jones basically get swapped for Afflalo too? If so, that might be a bigger loss for Denver than most people think.

@Lz: amen to the fullest. BET had some of the best and most entertaining gems in Slam comment history. His metaphors were straight up wild

If KM ran away from Nate Robinson after throwing a sucker punch – how can he stand up to Sasha or the rest of the Lakers.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Z: The part when Artest slowed LeBron down was when the Cavs played the Rockets and James scored 21 points, had like 2 rebounds, and dished out a total of zero assists that game. A guy like LeBron James is going to get his regardless, but that statline does corroborate the idea of Artest (and Battier) slowing him down. I know that Houston was great at team defense and following rotations, but with a weaker defender Bron could have just bulldozed his way to the hoop and drew 10 fouls on helpside, easily.
Seriously, the only person in the NBA who stands a chance guarding James is Ron Artest (and Shane Battier), not because of Ron’s speed, but because of his STRENGTH. He’s not as quick as his Indiana-self but realistically he hasn’t slowed down that much, while he has also become one of the strongest–if not the strongest–players in the league. This will help him shut down Carmelo Anthony. Obviously a superstar is still a superstar and the Lakers will need an efficient rotation, with huge helpside from Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol in order to shut Melo down, but Ron’s strength enables him to keep Melo from putting up easy shots. Carmelo Anthony isn’t really a speed player either.

If the Lakers felt threatened by this fact, they’d use it for locker-room fodder. Since they don’t, they’ll just have to beat the Nuggets straight up again before moving on to tougher opponents. In the mean time, Martin, one of the 100 best PFs in the game today, will be run over without a second thought again by top 10 PFs, Odom and Gasol…

I think slam moderators should come down alot harder with the quality (or lack thereof regarding comment makers) here. BETcats has had enough!

  • jay

when you say stupid ish like this Kmart, I swear I feel like smacking the lips off of you…yeah, both of them. btw Ouch, Bodie.

  • http://www.powerforward.nl JLP

Look how everyone is responding to Kenyon’s comments. Hilarious. What a stupid discussion.

  • Vish

I agree with someone above who said that it is sticky when anyone other than the top guys make statements. KMart is not going to win against the Lakers on his own (a few players can take over the game; Kobe, Lebron) so why provoke them? Stupid.
The Rockets gave LA a tougher series, does that make them better? The Celtics went through tough 7 game series before winning it all year before last. So were the Bulls better than them? C’mon man!
Just stfu and play hard Kenyon…

  • chintao

    Let’s go Thuggets.

  • josh

it doesnt maatter who is or was better between the fakers and thuggs cause Blazers are going to be the 2010 champs!

  • http://www.meandkobe.com hi

The nuggets have one good player and that is Carmelo. Billips sucks he is an average PG like Mike Bibby or Delonte West Kenyon sucks,JR Smith sucks, Birdman (Mark Madsen)Sucks No one is All Star caliber beside’s Carmelo. The Lakers won because of the Gangster boasting by JR Smith in the last game Denver won that switched the tables besides who throws up gang signs when they hit a three pointer anyway stupid idoits.

  • lou

Just cause a black man is tattooed doesn’t make him a thug. All the lakers fans should thank god that Kevin Garnett got hurt, they would not have won a championship otherwise. The nuggets on paper are better. JR Smith is a starting 2 guard on 85% of the teams in the NBA. And Chauncey Billups is Def in the top 5 PGs in the game. The Nuggets didnt close those games out, I give credit to the lakers, why get rid of Ariza? doesn’t make sense. Artest is going to bring the team down, theres no flow to his game. Kenyon Martin is a good PF, one of the best face up and post defenders at his position. If you get 100 tattoos they cant all be winners, but as long as they mean something to you, more power to you. Spot for spot the Nuggets outclass the lakers except at the SG. Kobe is the best if not tied for the best in the league with Lebron. Billups>Fisher. Nene> Gasol(or equal to). Carmelo>Artest. Smith>Vujacic. but yes Kobe>anthony carter or whoever they start at SG. I’ll take Chris anderson over Odom anyday, at least you know what your gonna get day in and out. So Kenyon isn’t that crazy after all.
