Kenyon Martin: Nuggets > Lakers

by Marcel Mutoni

Over the past two seasons, Los Angeles and Denver have met in the postseason. Both times, the Nuggets were sent packing. According to Kenyon Martin, Denver’s emotional forward, the results of those postseason battles are not indicative of which squad is superior.

Kenyon is convinced that his Nuggets are the better team, and went on the radio to declare his stance.

From SRI:

I think guys know that we were right there and everybody in that locker room and in the organization feels we were a better team than the Lakers.

Everybody feels we were a better team than the Lakers and no one can tell me anything different. No one.”

Kenyon also believes in the existence of the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, and no one can tell him any different. No one.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Kenyon has mouthed off when asked discussing the Lakers, and it certainly won’t be the last. Facts be damned.

He also thinks he came from a solid draft class and those lips tatooed on his neck make him look tough too.

  • Fred

I’m agree with him, they should had win the WCF. They lost two close game because of f**k top error.

  • Sparker

dude, i thought kenyon martin had been TRADED to the lakers. that was a wild couple of seconds

  • Clockwork

Didn’t Kenyon once think he was worth as much as Duncan?

  • kadavour

as if the night Kobe dropped 49 on his ass wasn’t enough. whatever dude, keep talking. I really think this Denver squad has hit their ceiling with the Billups acquisition. If he couldn’t vault them over the Lakers, no one else could. Chaunce’ is the perfect fit for their system. Maybe this squad would have terrorized the league back in 06 and 07, but not these last two years. Had they met Boston in 08, they would have been swept. And we saw the results in 09.

  • JP

@KLAV does Mbenga even have a roster spot?

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

Same Kenyon, Different team. Remember the 2002 NBA Finals, Kenyon? Your New Jersey Nets got manhandled by the Los Angeles Lakers . If you haven’t figured out by now a way to beat them, you probably never will.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dave

    Oh Jacuqie. Cruel.
    But fair.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

@JP, Why yes, he does. Here’s the link! http://www.nba.com/lakers/roster/index.html
He signed for the smallest contract on the team? I think it was under a milli a year. I remember seeing it on my Twitter.

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

You better think that, otherwise why even play? A professional competitor is not supposed to say another team is better than his. Even if eveyone on Slam disagrees.

  • Gerard Himself

Yknot gets it. If Kenyon would say: “Hey, I’m on a great team, but those Lakers will beat us” what kind of message would that be to his own team, and the fans? You people are taking this way too seriously.

It’s great that Kenyon believes in his team, but keep that confidence within the organization. The Lakers earned claim to the “best team in the league” title. Team > Potential

Lakers stole two of the first four games, and had the Nuggets not allowed for that to happen, they very well could have won that series. HOWEVER: By the time the series ended, the Nuggets lost all composure and the Lakers seemed to have come together as champions against Denver.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Lakers are better than Nugs, that’s not even debatable. However, Lakers fan shouldn’t kid themselves: Artest is not stopping Melo. The footspeed is not there anymore.

  • Jer boi

If not for ariza the nuggets coulda very well won the series. Now the lakers don’t have ariza so it makes sense that the nuggs r better

Memphis wins it all this year! Go Bubbachuck!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

    co-sign Kenyon Martin.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The Lakers would love to see Melo facing up and putting the ball on the floor all night against Artest and a set defense. Forcing him to be a creator and playmaker is still you’re best bet.
Last year he killed them because he was an absolute bully down low and nobody on the perimeter had the girth to handle in the post or on the boards. Artest solves that issue.

  • whooo!

K-Mart is either plain dumb, or has the worst short-term memory ever. i remember them losing in Game 4 vs LA and him still chest thumping and shouting after a dunk. or last year, he said he’s never let Duncan get anything easy, “never have & never will”, even though dude hung a near quad-double on K-Mart. and of course, he called out Van Horn for not showing up in the Finals in 02, and then going 3-23 in the clincher. this dude has always made me laugh by how much of a fool he is. i hope they meet LA again this year.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee

Fun Fact: The pair of lips on his neck actually mad this statement….

  • http://SLAMonline.com J Dizzle

@Jer boi. Sure, they lost Ariza, but they picked up Artest. You forgot that one little acquisition. Might be a difference maker in your equation. So no, it doesn’t make that much sense and neither do you.

  • luv2ball

Lol at O.R. If the Nugget where a better team, they would have won the series. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, my A$$. Let’s Just look at the team Billups > Fisher, Kobe > Whomever the starting 2 is for the Nugs this year, Melo > Artest, L.O > Martin, Pau > Nene. Just looking at the starting 5, the lakers are better. I don’t even need to go to the bench

    D-d-d-didn’t Kobe b-b-b-bang Kenyon’s w-w-w-wife?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Z, why do you always act like Artest has slowed down that much? He’s only 29! Melo is a speed player either. If Artest can slow LeBron James down he can contain Melo.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Melo isn’t* a speed player either. He’s not THAT fast.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

    a few points:

    A) somebody asked him, expecting this exact reaction. K-Mart didnt start mouthing off, he was egged on.

    B) He is entitled to his opinion.

    C) i would be more concerned if he said the Lakers were better.

    D) If the Nuggets had not played indimdated, and played like the Nuggets, they are the better team. But since the Lakers scare them to the point they cant do that LA has the upper hand.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Since we are going to talk about things based on stats from last year: Bobcats>>Lakers

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Also, the lack of intelligent comments on here is starting to suprise me. Even though i am not one who usually provides ‘smart comments’, things like “Kwame Brown>Kenyon Martin” “DJ Mbenga>Kenyon Martin” “Kobe had sex with his wife” are just stupid. Lets talk about what the debate is here. Kenyon Martin said he thinks his team is better and if you disagree you can go someplace, i disagree with him. However i am not going to insult him. Get on my level, pesants.

When BET is trying to be the voice of reason, well things done changed.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

No the Nuggets aren’t better, regardless of the matchups, regardless of records. Let’s just break it down, the Lakers were consistently winning 4-8 games at a time, then losing 1 or 2. The Nuggets were really hot and unstoppable, and then all of a sudden cold as ice. The inconsistency in the regular season showed that they have the talent and the will to run with the best, but at the end of the day it was about executing when it counted most. When you are playing for a chance to go to the Finals, and you blow 2 games(!!!) with an inbounds pass there is clearly something wrong. For as good as the Nuggets are, they still choked. And somehow the Lakers pulled out the win(s). And BET, the “>” comments are just for fun with all the sarcasm that’s already on these forums.

  • http://SLAMonline.com J Dizzle

@BET. You have some good points, but I have to disagree with your last statement (D). They can’t play their best because they are intimidated? Then their best isn’t better than the other team. If that’s what they attribute their loss to (which I’m sure they don’t), they have no business in the WCF. Don’t make excuses for them. They came into that series confident and hungry for a win, I don’t think intimidation had anything to do with it bro. They know how hard it is to win that deep in the playoffs, being scared or intimidated wasn’t an issue at that point. These guys are pros they know what they’re going up against.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Word. This post (not the comments) takes me back to when SLAMonline was cool. And we’d argue in the comments all day about how the Nuggs were better, cooler, more likeable, less irritating and just generally superior to LA in every way. Well, it looks like I (we?) lost that argument when LA won it all.
But for some reason I still TOTALLY agree with Kenyon here. So. Imma say it now.

  • TADOne

    Chauncey > Lakers 3-headed PG
    Melo > Artest
    Nugs Bench > Lakers Bench
    Lakers team >> Nuggets team
Damn, it hurt to say that.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Teddy, I missed the part when Artest slowed Bron down. I’ve watched him play a terrible game against Houston this year and it had everything to do with team defense and rotations. Artest can’t stay in front of Bron on the wing, you and I know that. / Artest is way bigger than we came to the league and he just can’t move like he did in Indy. It is no coincidence that Battier was the one guarding Kobe throughout the series even though Artest was doing the talking. Adelman knew better.

  • Chris

Except KMart, they don’t give out rings to the “better team”, they give rings for winning. You could argue going back over the past decade, that the “best team” hasn’t always won the championship. Stop talking about how good you are and win when it counts.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

TADOne, with those statements with who is better (individually) I’m curious as to how you decided the Lakers were better? Is it because of the 2 guard and the 4 where LA has Kobe and Pau, and coaching where LA is obviously superior? Is that enough to make them a better team? Because I agree with what you say, with the exception of the Bench Mob part. LMK!

  • la huey

Outside of extreme match-up issues, better team wins 7-game series.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

J-Dizzle: my point is, if you saw the Nuggets in the playoffs last year BEFORE LA, they were a unstopable force that was beating teams by 20-40 points. When they played LA, they changed their playing style because they didnt think they could play like that against LA. They didnt even try to dominate LA, because they were scared of the reputation of LA. Metaphorically speaking they tried to fix something that wasnt broken and failed. That is why LA beat them, and since George Karl doesnt really learn too much from his mistakes, that is why LA will beat them again.

He didn’t say the Nuggs ARE better than the Lakers, he said they WERE better than the lakers.

As a team, he is correct. Denver was a better team last year…but that team fell apart and couldn’t recover at the time the Lakers decided to pull together. Play that series one week earlier, and the Nuggets possibly sweep.

How the fack, were they the better team. They weren’t first in the West. They had less wins then the Lakers. They lost a series to the LAKERS. And the LAKERS won the ship’. Where does this make sense. And BET … are you retarted? They lost because of intimidation lol. Denver are the tough thugs of the NBA are they not? JR, Martin, big bad Jones. GTFOH, I know you hate the Lakers but… why not say you are good with the ladies or something. It is just as ridiculous.
Wait … sorry, I was talking BULLsh!t. The Thuggettes were the best team in History last year. As it was seen through out the regular season and playoffs. They will go down as the best team to win the champi … GTFOH.

For a guy who (unfortunately) doesn’t visit the comment section as frequent as he used (and wants) to, BETCATS just reminded me why I miss coming here. While James the balla stuttering just reminded me why I should cherish my busy schedule and me not wasting my time reading through the comment section.

  • Fat Lever

All this coulda, shoulda, woulda stuff that Nuggets fanboys are throwing out there is hilarious to me. That might work for a 1 game series, but the reason why there is a 7 game series is because the better team wins in that format. Get over it, and I’m not even a Lakers fan. Didn’t Dhantay Jones basically get swapped for Afflalo too? If so, that might be a bigger loss for Denver than most people think.

  • albie1kenobi

@Lz: amen to the fullest. BET had some of the best and most entertaining gems in Slam comment history. His metaphors were straight up wild

  • garyholden

If KM ran away from Nate Robinson after throwing a sucker punch – how can he stand up to Sasha or the rest of the Lakers.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Z: The part when Artest slowed LeBron down was when the Cavs played the Rockets and James scored 21 points, had like 2 rebounds, and dished out a total of zero assists that game. A guy like LeBron James is going to get his regardless, but that statline does corroborate the idea of Artest (and Battier) slowing him down. I know that Houston was great at team defense and following rotations, but with a weaker defender Bron could have just bulldozed his way to the hoop and drew 10 fouls on helpside, easily.
Seriously, the only person in the NBA who stands a chance guarding James is Ron Artest (and Shane Battier), not because of Ron’s speed, but because of his STRENGTH. He’s not as quick as his Indiana-self but realistically he hasn’t slowed down that much, while he has also become one of the strongest–if not the strongest–players in the league. This will help him shut down Carmelo Anthony. Obviously a superstar is still a superstar and the Lakers will need an efficient rotation, with huge helpside from Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol in order to shut Melo down, but Ron’s strength enables him to keep Melo from putting up easy shots. Carmelo Anthony isn’t really a speed player either.

  • http://scattermall.com/scattermallsports/ Sports Scatter

If the Lakers felt threatened by this fact, they’d use it for locker-room fodder. Since they don’t, they’ll just have to beat the Nuggets straight up again before moving on to tougher opponents. In the mean time, Martin, one of the 100 best PFs in the game today, will be run over without a second thought again by top 10 PFs, Odom and Gasol…

I agree with someone above who said that it is sticky when anyone other than the top guys make statements. KMart is not going to win against the Lakers on his own (a few players can take over the game; Kobe, Lebron) so why provoke them? Stupid.
The Rockets gave LA a tougher series, does that make them better? The Celtics went through tough 7 game series before winning it all year before last. So were the Bulls better than them? C’mon man!
Just stfu and play hard Kenyon…

    Let’s go Thuggets.

it doesnt maatter who is or was better between the fakers and thuggs cause Blazers are going to be the 2010 champs!

The nuggets have one good player and that is Carmelo. Billips sucks he is an average PG like Mike Bibby or Delonte West Kenyon sucks,JR Smith sucks, Birdman (Mark Madsen)Sucks No one is All Star caliber beside’s Carmelo. The Lakers won because of the Gangster boasting by JR Smith in the last game Denver won that switched the tables besides who throws up gang signs when they hit a three pointer anyway stupid idoits.

  • lou

Just cause a black man is tattooed doesn’t make him a thug. All the lakers fans should thank god that Kevin Garnett got hurt, they would not have won a championship otherwise. The nuggets on paper are better. JR Smith is a starting 2 guard on 85% of the teams in the NBA. And Chauncey Billups is Def in the top 5 PGs in the game. The Nuggets didnt close those games out, I give credit to the lakers, why get rid of Ariza? doesn’t make sense. Artest is going to bring the team down, theres no flow to his game. Kenyon Martin is a good PF, one of the best face up and post defenders at his position. If you get 100 tattoos they cant all be winners, but as long as they mean something to you, more power to you. Spot for spot the Nuggets outclass the lakers except at the SG. Kobe is the best if not tied for the best in the league with Lebron. Billups>Fisher. Nene> Gasol(or equal to). Carmelo>Artest. Smith>Vujacic. but yes Kobe>anthony carter or whoever they start at SG. I’ll take Chris anderson over Odom anyday, at least you know what your gonna get day in and out. So Kenyon isn’t that crazy after all.
