Paul Pierce Guarantees a Title, Conditionally

by Marcel Mutoni

Paul Pierce wasn’t moved by what took place in the NBA’s championship round this past June. Mostly because he was watching it, instead of participating. He believes things will be different in 2010, but he is also strategically careful (and smart), even when making a bold prediction.

Paul was asked about how the Boston Celtics’ season will play out next year, and Pierce said he expects to win a title. But, only on one condition.

From Yahoo!:

“Before the season even started last year, I was asked, ‘What is going to stop y’all from winning it all?’ ” Pierce said in a phone interview on Thursday. “The first thing I said was, ‘If we’re healthy, we’re going to win it all.’ And I’m going to say it again: ‘If we are healthy, we are going to win it all.’

“I honestly believe that. I think we’re the best team in the NBA, healthy.”

“Healthy” in Boston applies to everyone on the team, but the focus is almost entirely on one player, and one player alone: Kevin Garnett.

Boston’s front office continues to be extremely evasive about Garnett’s physical well being. No one knows for sure how KG’s knee is doing today — perhaps not even Kevin himself — and how it will hold up during the 82-game grind and postseason.

Paul Pierce may be confident about his team’s chances, as he should be, but even he realizes that nothing is truly guaranteed.

    Lies, Truth…

  • King David

if KG was healthy Boston would have repeated

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

How can he guarantee this, when Mo and JR guaranteed they’re teams would win this year …

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

James, because Mo and JR are idiots. How cocky are they? They’re not even top-tier talent and they’re making the claims for Lebron and Carmelo. So dumb on their part.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

Healthy, they are one of the best teams. Cleveland and LA are going to be just as good, though. I hope KG’s knee is alright because Boston really needs him.

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

    Love it.

  • Dutch Rob

    Co Sign King David
They would have repeated.Orlando had a hard time against the C’s even without KG and KG would have made gasol cry in the finals AGAIN. If they begin the playoffs healthy they will be the best team.

  • Clockwork

I think Pierce is right, if KG is healthy and Marquis Daniels turns out to be a reliable backup, I don’t see why they couldn’t win it all again next year.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net Latin Syndicate

Idiots who claim Boston would’ve won it last year weren’t watching their regular season games last year. Both times they were playing at their peak with a healthy Garnet (I’m talking incredible winning streaks) it was the Lakeshow that put out their fire. You can’t fool a real NBA fan and say those were merely regular season games. Those two games were played with playoff intensity. Only an casual fan didn’t see that.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

If they’re so Unsure about KG’s knees, then wouldn’t it be a smarter idea to keep him on the Injured List until they’re Sure he’s ready? I mean, you might as well bring him back after the All-star weekend, or even just before the Playoffs if you’re that worried.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

And I couldn’t help but LOL and Latin Syndicate’s comment. I mean, he’s trying to differentiate between a REAL fan and a CASUAL fan.. LOL
    easy there.

  • Brian

It will have to be someone from the East to oust a healthy Celtics team because Kobe can’t score against them.

They would have gotten beat by the Lakers, no question about it. Every Laker fan wanted that match up, too bad they couldn’t make it there……

  • TC

If you were the Lakers, you would rather play the Cavs or the Magics, but not a healthy Boston team.

  • ClydeSays

I think what gets overlooked from last year is is that the C’s won 62 games WITHOUT KG for half those games. That to me was even more impressive than the healthy 66 win season, with a less experienced Rondo, Perk & Baby.

Does anyone really think the Artest version of the Lake Show, the VC version of the Magic or the Shaq version of the Cavs will be better that a healthy C’s that hangs their hat on Defense & have improved offense? I’d never count any Kobe or Lebron led squad out of it, but a solid TEAM effort usually wins out.

That said, I don’t like promises of wins, no matter what. There are just too many variables. Bad calls, no calls, injuries, slumps, some bench guy playing out of his mind, etc.

Even in the Lakers, Spurs, or earlier Celtic reigns, there was a certain amount of luck mixed in with talent, will & great play.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

It seems to me anyone who guarantees games always ends up losing. (ie: Rasheed, JR, Mo… especially Mo who just kept talking and playing horribly while talking..)

  • Dutch Rob

Hate to admit it but you have a point Clyde

  • Brian

Rasheed is 2-1 when he guaranteed victory and he got hurt in the loss.

  • KaponoE

If this, If that… Will people just accept fact? Part of the reason sports are so intriguing is because of the unknown. If KG is healthy, If Kobe got hurt, If Fisher misses that shot against Orlando, If LeBron had help, If, If, If, If,… Guess what!?! None of that happened. If I was 6’6 had handle, athletically elite, and could stroke, I’d be NBA MVP. Get my point?

  • JB

The same thing can be said for almost any team. At least those that make the playoffs between seeds 1-5, typically.

Hell, the Warriors probably could have made the playoffs if Moped Monta didn’t ruin his season plus every other injury suffered.

Injuries are a part of the game, that’s why depth is important. If you’re such a better team than the team who is holding the chip, you would have gotten there and beat them. Team means man roster from top to bottom.

  • WOODY

The Celts will be a force if healthy. Yeah, and I’d be an MVP contender if I was 40 years younger. Neither is going to happen. Garnett’s not ready yet and somebody else will lose considerable time and/or efficiency. Celts will be real lucky to make top 4.

  • http://shoenut.blogspot.com ShoeNut

3 Reasons the Lakers will repeat this year:

    1. Ron Ron = more physical ball
    2. LO is back
    3. 24

  • roman

If KG was healthy you would of got beat by Orlando, oh wait you did. Boston is a one and done team. Geratol crew! Lakers got this on lock for a while.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Can’t argue with Pierce. I like Boston over everybody else if they are healthy. But, I think Orlando is crazy dangerous.

let me get this right for latin syndicate and jackie moon, youre counting two games out of a regular season, and using that to back up a 7 game final series? your logic is flawless.

  • ENDS

If Mike Jax wouldnt have died…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

Well I don’t like the double standard on this. Pierce has a point, they’re a damn good team when completely healthy, but the year they beat the Lakers lets not forget: 1) Bynum AND Ariza were out 2) Ariza PROVED just how valuable he was in crunch time with his defense 3) Pierce was Finals MVP after he torched Vlad. FREAKIN VLAD GUARDED HIM, of course he’ll get MVP. Pierce needs to put his money where his mouth is, if Ariza AND Bynum were healthy I really think the ’08 Champ series would have been much much much closer than people speculated.

  • http://mbenga-mblog.blogspot.com/ vmcb

WOODY is nuts. Lucky to be top 4? ShoeNut is loco, too. Ron Ron = less shots for Kobe and Pau + tremendous ball-pounding abilities

  • Tower

    Very original ShoeNut… Not..
Clyde said it all. Celtics has shown us some of the best fundamentel basketball we have seen in a long time, with their team defense and professionalism. they will repeat if Garnett fully recoverse. they should.

  • tavoris

‘Sheed has enuf skill that the Celts will be in it EVEN if KG isn’t 100%.

  • vtrobot

Ha ha. If KG sits out the whole season, C’s will be in the top 3. They should NOT rush to bring him back. There’s no point. I don’t know if a healthy C’s team last year could have stopped the Lakeshow. The Fakers were rolling last year. This year? I’m definitely taking a this (healthy) C’s team over the current Lakers. I’m thinking (and hoping) that Sheed and Marquis will have a positive impact. This C’s team is more talented than the one that won it all. It will be interesting to see if fat Shaq takes this seriously and makes a real effort to win a final ring. A motivated Shaq and Bron could be a force.

  • AL29

Lakers over Boston in 6, unless Boston trades Allen for Rip Hamilton at some point in the season.

  • jdubbs29

How Pierce gonna guarantee when Arenas already guaranteed it along with like 10 other players?

  • dial up

Pierce already guaranteed he was the best player on the planet. He said it right before the start of last year’s season. Was he??? I don’t think so.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Hey look Paul Pierce, I can do that too! IF Ron Ron doesn’t go batsh!t and IF Khloe doesn’t Jessica Simpson L.O. and If our 3-headed point guard group keeps producing and IF the Lakers stay healthy, they will repeat. Guarenteed!

  • la huey

It would be real close but I’d take a healthy Celtics squad over any other team but unless that Ainge worked out a trade with the Suns for their medical staff, a team with that much mileage on so many key players won’t be all be healthy in May and June.

Some great points here-I agree w/Latin Syndicate (and I’m a Celts fan)BUT Latin, don’t get it twisted-playoff “intensity” and playoffs are two very different animals. It’s really quite simple though: KG *is* the Boston Celtics. Without him this year, no banners. We still would win the East in my opinion, but unless Big Baby had a career-year, it’d be tough to win another ‘chip w/out Ticket. Sure, the Cavs look great, but Shaq will be out of gas by April and we all know Cleveland will find a way to choke anyway. To quote Darth Vader “It is your destiny.” Camp starts next week. YES.

Paul Pierce was nothing before Garnett & Allen showed up lol they were TANKING GAMES

  • http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

The line of thinking that a healthy Celtics would have beaten the Lakers might bother Lakers fans more if the Lakers hadn’t beaten a healthy Celtics team twice in the regular season in playoff-type intensity games. As it is, it’s more like a annoying gnat buzzing around the Lakers than an albatross around their neck.

  • Bigblackmenace

I love it, everyone is not even talking about the spurs, the best nba franchise of the decade. The big three are all healthy again, RJ and Dyse added to the line-up. Parker is better and Manu is HEALTHY… Pop will have em playing big D this year… people always forget about the spurs until they start kicking everyones butts!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

If Derrick Rose plays like Chris Paul and if Vinny Del Negro coaches like Phil Jackson and if Joakim Noah averages a double-double and if Loul Deng plays like Grant Hill circa 1996 and if James Johnson has a ROY-caliber year and if Tyrus Thomas reminds us of Dennis Rodman and if Kirk Hinrich can shut down every perimeter player in the league and if Brian Urlacher gets bored sitting on the sidelines of Bears games and decides to wear a Bulls jersey just to intimidate the hell out of opposing players and if Tim Duncan realizes the error of his decision back in 2000 and demands a trade to Chicago and if Tex Winter comes out of retirement to bring back the Triangle Offense in Chicago and if Michael Jordan decides to come back as a “special assistant in charge of running Bulls practices” the Bulls WILL win the championship! I guarantee it!

  • http://slamonline.com anjoe intal

The Lakers also went up against the celtics in the finals not HEALTHY. They competed without Andrew Bynum and Trevor Ariza. Every team really needs everyone to be healthy in order to win championships. The lakers will win it, helthy.i guarantee! C’mon celtics fans, lets just see when both teams get against each other, considering all of them healthy.

  • Hambone

he does know they signed sheed doesnt he

  • http://onlydopemusic.com killakal

I’ll never doubt the Boston Celtics. The team is all-star caliber players at almost every position with tons of experience.

    Anybody, but the Lakers!!!

    http://onlydopemusic.com

  • COLT6

It is a long shot but if both the Lakers and the Celtics stay healthy during the playoffs, they should be squaring off in the finals come June. Artest and Kobe (if he puts his mind to it) can lockdown the Carmelos, the RJs, the BRoys etc. Bad news for RayRay and Truth. The C’s however have a three-headed monster at the 4 and 5 in KG, Sheed and Perk to neutralize Shaq and D12; consequently, Gasol, Bynum and Lamar Kardashian too. If and when LA and Boston meet for the title, it will be a battle for the ages. I say Celtics in 6. Because you damn well know that Rondo will beat the living sh9t outta DFish, Chris Brown and Big Ears Farmar!

Lakers, will repeat but this time it will be easier, the light switch turned on, and they understand the triangle finally. And they have the personnel to run it. Go back to stuffing your face and having that cut body of yours, cuz we have this guy Artest that will KILL you, actually KILL you.

  • anti-crust

Brian, Kobe doesn’t have to score against the Celtics, that was 2 rings ago….the Lakers are different, the ball moves and they create mismatches with their versatility….It’s not 2006 anymore, it’s not Kobe one on 5, although he will still do it because he’s that great….(see passes off glass to himself, see step thru’s on double teams, using pivot foot to move 10 feet with the jump…..he’s so fundamentally sound, and he has teammates that he trusts. • The D Train

yeah, the Lakers won, but Boston was sans KG, Houston lost Yao and still took them to 7, and if Jameer closes out on Fish, and/or Lee makes his alley at the end of game 2, the whole playoffs look totally different. i’m not saying the Lakers didn’t deserve to win, cuz you have to play the hand you’re dealt, but all you Laker fans saying how great they were/will be aren’t looking at the whole picture. the bottom line is that Kobe fanatics and Laker fanatics like to write/remember some sweet-ass revisionist history. your team won one title, kids, so don’t go off the deep end if someone else says they’re gonna come and take your belts. you dont think the Celts felt the same way after game 6 in 2008? championships last a lifetime, but front-running fans’ memories seem to last much less…

  • http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

D Train – What do you mean about the Celts feeling the same way after game 6 in 2008? Did any Laker come out and publicly guarantee they would win the next year if they were healthy?

  • The D Train

Jackie: I meant that after obliterating the Lakers in game 6 of ’08 that the Celts and their fans had every reason to feel as confident as the Lakers and their fans feel right now about the chances of repeating. Basically what Pierce says about “if we’re healthy…” validates my very point about the over-confidence of Laker fans going into this season…ANYTHING can happen from year to year. Overconfidence is the drink of champions and their fans, but there are tons of reasons that teams don’t repeat that often (unless they have a MJ/Pippen or Shaq/Kobe duo), and the Lakers are subject to all the same pitfalls as the previous champs.

  • B-more Mike

Were drunk because our leader is stone cold killer and trust that he’ll have the squad ready to go!

  • http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

D Train – How does Paul Pierce’s statement result in the Lakers over-confidence? If you’re talking about the Lakers fans’ negative reaction to Paul Pierce’s “guarantee”, that’s more of a reaction to his overconfidence (mostly because he publicly made his guarantee) than it is a result of any confidence in the Lakers. You’re missing the point, which is that when you don’t win, you don’t pop off (Just like when the Lakers didn’t win in 2008, they didn’t pop off, they let their play do the talking). Well, actually, you can pop off, but you’ll be ridiculed for it.

  • The D Train

got it, JM. my point was more a reaction to the Laker fans on here…”FO,FO,FO..is the number or rings the Lakers will win in next five years”, “Pierce needs to put his money where his mouth is, if Ariza AND Bynum were healthy I really think the ‘08 Champ series would have been much much much closer than people speculated”, “Lakers, will repeat but this time it will be easier, the light switch turned on, and they understand the triangle finally. Yeah well, those guys are idiots. Every fan base has some percentage of them. It’s just that large markets have more fans, so they also have more idiot fans. Same percentage, just larger total numbers than small markets. The Lakers have their work cut out for them. The Celtics, Cavs, Magic, Spurs, heck even the Blazers are contendahs this season.
