Reports: Rubio Staying Across the Pond

by Marcel Mutoni

According to several published reports on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, David Khan’s numerous trips to Spain resulted in absolutely nothing for the T-Wolves (except, perhaps, a nice tan for the Minny boss.)

Ricky Rubio appears to be staying in his native land, for at least a couple more years.

This isn’t really much of a surprise — since Draft night, it has never seemed likely that we’d see Rubio on an NBA floor in 2010, and certainly not in a Timberwolves uniform.

So, now what for the T-Wolves and their fans? Well, there’s a lot of teeth-gnashing and suffering going on at the moment (and hope that Jonny Flynn turns into some kind of star.) The poor bastards.

The Minny media, meanwhile, isn’t totally convinced that Rubio won’t be playing in the U.S. next season, The Star Tribune has a rumor (last heard on the infamous Draft night) that the Wolves and Knicks are working on a possible trade. Said rumor was shot down completely by the NY media. Alas.

In the end, as always, it seems to have been about the money more than anything else. At the moment, Regal FC Barcelona can afford to pay Ricky significantly more than Minny is even allowed to offer.

All things considered, not a very difficult decision for the Rubio camp.

Dial Up: Watch Euro ball, dude. Younger players rarely ever take minutes from veterans.

@dial up….: Calderon is top-8 in the NBA and top-4 in the world (or “FIBA-basketball” as you like to call it) only after Deron,Parker,Nash(in that order). My updated top-30 players in the world is coming soon…(no Delfino this time….).

I think Jukai meant a top ten point guard in Europe. Or at lease I hope he did. Unless he is discounting Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Deron Williams, Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris, Tony Parker, Chauncey Billups, Rondo, Andre Miller, & Derrick Rose. I’ll stop at ten to be fair.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Nash? are u kidding? Chris Paul is better than Nash.

When Jukai’s reasoning ability is comparable to the Greek Tragedy, things are really bad.

  • http://dsfjkf.com Jukai

Eboy: I don’t think Andre Miller is better than Rubio. That being said, I can’t really debate those nine and I’m sweating you’ll pull one more out of your ass so I’m going to retract my statement.
Calderon is top-15 in the NBA. Probably worse in the worlds. I’d take Navarro over Calderon any day of the week. Calderon’s a more valuable leader than actual player.

@Eboy…..: Greek tragedy being one of the greatest achievements of human inteligence through out the centuries, this is definitelly a compliment….better stay with more simple ways of cursing cause after a certain(unfortunatelly low) level it is clear that you are getting confused….

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Whatever his name is should now be referred to as The Greek Tragedy from this day forward. Yeah, Jukai, I’m not sure if Jason Kidd at this advanced age could be included, or Jason Terry, or Russell Westbrook or even Kirk Hinrich.

    Eboy
Don’t sleep on that Westbrook boy. I see him making a nasty leap this year or next year.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I was actually being sarcastic, Allen, but it doesn’t matter…..I wouldn’t take the kid over any of the guys I mentioned.

  • tavoris

some posters up here are so very confusing…and Jukai, substitute Mo Williams for Andre Miller if you don’t like him. Or even Kirk Hinrich. Ultimately, Youtube lore and one strong Olympic showing do not make him a proven commodity. He’s a fantastic prospect, but a prospect nonetheless. Andre Miller is a proven NBA point guard-one of the few “pure” point guards that exist. Shane Heal did well against the US years ago, and we know how that panned out.

  • http://dsfjkf.com Jukai

Eboy: I would take none of those guys over Rubio, that’s downright ridiculous. Mo WIlliams would probably wound up a top ten. There are one or two point guards in Europe (and maybe John Walls) I’d take over Rubio as well.
But this is what I don’t like about the whole Rubio hating thing… Rubio has turned out to be a Rick Barry-level creep. He could probably hang with Kobe. But saying you’d take Terry or Kidd over Rubio? That’s downright insulting. I know European talents don’t always pan out, but neither do kids coming out of college… yet did anyone say “You know, Rose may be good, but he’s still a prospect. I’d take Jason Terry over Derrick Rose.” Hell no. So why does everyone believe–
You know, f it. Kids a jerk. I’m wasting way too much energy defending this guy.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Since he is a PG on his team, i’ll even add Gil to the list of PG’s I would take over Rubio.

  • ClydeSays

Isn’t Rubio’s Euro buyout around 7 mil? What team would pay that for a 18 yr old PG? Draft hin, ok, but don’t pretend you’re going to lay out that money or bring him over immediately.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Top 10 point guard… That’s a joke. For a second there I thought you were serious.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Your mind as w.c: “Big stupids egooverweighted mongoloids!”… Mongoloid means Asian you dumb f*ck. Or maybe you’re a racist; fitting for a Ricky Rubio (ie Team Photo) fan. Either way, I find it kind of amusing you would say something that blatantly idiotic and racist at the same time, right after calling Americans stupid… Especially when Asians kick your @ss at school. Stick to watching soccer and shouting racial slurs at non-white players like the ignorant jack@ss you already are. Basketball isn’t your sport.
And I shouldn’t be banned from this site for calling out a racist, Eurocentric, derogatory flamer who sees himself as somehow better than all Americans and non-whites.

  • http://dsfjkf.com Jukai

No no, you guys are all right. He’s a weak, skinny 5’11 dude who can’t play defense and has no ball handling. You’re all 100% right.

  • http://dsfjkf.com Jukai

If he came into the NBA, he’d be the slowest person there. Guys like Hinrich would run circles around him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

I submit that Eboy brings the hottest comebacks to insults ever. He’s like a commenting version of Andre Agassi or smth

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

@ blinguo: I completely missed on the fine print under the submit button for all my time commenting here. Good thing I’m such a well-behaved internet person naturally

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

That’s great. But considering the rules cite everything that guy does and it only came about when he went missing, I figured he was gone as such through some kind of enforcement. But guess the rules don’t mean nothing but legalese. Carry on.

what was that clown doing in the draft??????????

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

Rubio won’t be in the NBA until 2012(at least)…check Sheridan’s post. This is definitely a problem for the NBA (at least business wise)…this 500000 limit for buyouts should change as soon as possible….

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Hes a spoiled little b-hatch.. He should have decided his destination before the draft instead of waiting to see which team hes gonna bolt from…

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I bet if he somehow would have been selected by the Lakers or Magic he would have showed up to camp..
