Reports: Rubio Staying Across the Pond

by Marcel Mutoni

According to several published reports on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, David Khan’s numerous trips to Spain resulted in absolutely nothing for the T-Wolves (except, perhaps, a nice tan for the Minny boss.)

Ricky Rubio appears to be staying in his native land, for at least a couple more years.

This isn’t really much of a surprise — since Draft night, it has never seemed likely that we’d see Rubio on an NBA floor in 2010, and certainly not in a Timberwolves uniform.

So, now what for the T-Wolves and their fans? Well, there’s a lot of teeth-gnashing and suffering going on at the moment (and hope that Jonny Flynn turns into some kind of star.) The poor bastards.

The Minny media, meanwhile, isn’t totally convinced that Rubio won’t be playing in the U.S. next season, The Star Tribune has a rumor (last heard on the infamous Draft night) that the Wolves and Knicks are working on a possible trade. Said rumor was shot down completely by the NY media. Alas.

In the end, as always, it seems to have been about the money more than anything else. At the moment, Regal FC Barcelona can afford to pay Ricky significantly more than Minny is even allowed to offer.

All things considered, not a very difficult decision for the Rubio camp.

    great, now grab A.I

  • Justiin

    His ass is just scared

  • Hightz

what a jerk, i feel for ya minny….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Well, David Kahn certainly knew what he was doing…

  • Hussman25

BOO THIS YOUNG MAN!!! I almost had a feeling this would happen… Not that he was going to stay overseas, but he wanted to test the “draft process” just like the college kids do here in the US. He never had any intention to play over here; and wanted to get drafted as soon as possible. With the hopes to show teams either who draft him (Minny) and or trade for him that is is a valued commodity. All a great ploy by agents and parents, but now have you just stunted his growth?? Hopefully we will all can tell and this does not turn into another ARVIDAS SABONIS situation… (in the sense that he stays overseas waaaaaayyyyy too long and we only get to see 1/2 the player we could have seen. Imagine if he would have come over earlier to help the blazers???)

  • Marc

David Kahn proved to the world he was a jerk(and did not know sh** about bball)once he drafted both pointguards & then announced that Rubio and Flynn could play together…now what ?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    Swing and a miss.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

I really hoped Minny could have figured out a way to bring Rubio in. That’s really a shame. And now we wonder what Minny would be like if they had taken someone else like Steph Curry, Brandon Jennings, etc.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

What’s not reported here is that his Menudo eligibility runs out in 2011, allowing a much smoother transition to the NBA lifestyle.

  • ab_40

yeah and a lot less money

he’s gonna do great with barcelona and in international play

  • Shrugz

Kid’s 18 most PGs stay in college for a couple years to around 20 years old
    he’ll improve
and if he doesn’t he’ll have a short stint in the NBA

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Kahn had insurance in Flynn, that move don’t look so bad anymore since he traded Bassy away anyway. Rubio is hype, and just by these posts you can tell. dude is just flash, no composition. i dont want him in the league, wouldnt pay to watch him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Other than saying that he was going to play Flynn and Rubio together, I still like what Kahn did on draft day (i know i am in the extreme minority)

Was anyone thinking the TPups were ready to make a leap over Denver and Portland in their own division, anyway?

Long term moves that day. (remember they also got Denver’s #1 next year in the Ty Lawson move)

Why does the NBA set restrictions on how much a team can pay for a buyout??!?!? Seems a bit stupid and archaeic, IMO. Like Marcel mentioned, regardless of what Kahn said or did, ANY NBA team would not be “holding the cards” against a foreign team of any size (ie Barca, Olympiakos, etc….)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Could you imagine if the EPL prohibited their teams from paying outrageous sums for superstar transfers?!?!?

    Stupid.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

People need to chill on the Minny hate. Name me a 5th pick that was GUARANTEED a starting spot and no competition for his position ever? Cmon now, if you scurred say you scurred. If he’s that good, why would he even worry about Jonny Flynn? Kahn went to Spain three times and tried to work the best deal he could given the limitations imposed to him by the NBA. We all know that if the Knicks were picking 5th, his a– would be in Manhattan righ now and we wouldn’t even be talking about a buy out situation (like that wasn’t something he thought about before putting his name in the draft). He made a business decision, that’s it. No one to blame here. Certainly not Minny. As I’ve said in another post, I saw Barcelona play in May and that league is terrible. Guys like Ilyasova, Andersen and Santiago run things down there. I don’t want to hear anything until he actually plays in the NBA.

  • WhaHos

Slam has reported this as a done deal at least 3 times in the last 2 months. Lets hope this is actually finally over

  • http://Www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

Soooo, is Sportsguy gonna use this nonsense in his next online campaign to be an NBA GM? As for Ricky R…. Good riddance.

  • onions baby onions

Exactly Z, still a decent draft pick..think of it, if minny hadn’t chosen Ricky, everyone would crucify them. And I also agree with WhaHos- seriously, it is what it is, I don’t need daily Rubio updates sayin the exact same thing

  • Bear

    Good..now stay over there

  • Yesse

Rubio shouldnt even come to the Nba.He and his mom were just whining about the location of Minnesota, that it would be too cold to be down there.A bit like Steve Francis, except Rubio doesnt have the balls to ask for a trade. Why your gonna sign up for the draft and not gonna play in the Nba?

  • Justiin

    He is wack, and European

  • Asanto

i was askin myself the same thing. What was all that “I’m ready for the NBA” & “I wanna play right now” ish about. He probably hoped that the Lakers would draft him in the 2nd Round and that he could be maxin’n'relaxin’ in Hollywood and get a few rings with Pau and Kobe on the side.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

what a douche. he should not have entered the draft

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    ….

  • tavoris

Z…lottery picks are generally expected to be immediate impact contributors. When one isn’t an immediate starter, it is usually a disappointment. Rubio isn’t a contributor AT ALL right now. Also, Johnny Flynn is actually pretty good, and figures to have a HUGE head start on the PG minutes in two years over Rubio.

  • tavoris

ESPN reported today that the Wolves actually got a deal worked out, but Rubio backed out.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I love how everyone is damning a teenager to hell for letting his parents make some bad buisness decisions for him and initially not wanting to play in Minny. I wanted to see this kid play in the NBA as much as the next fan but is it really appropriate to rip this kid to pieces because he has options or because he made a mistake while signing a professional basketball contract when he was 16? Get a life, people.

  • Hussman25

If Rubio backed out… he deserves to stay over there. Im done w/ this kid!

  • Alan

Little bit tired of the racist crap I read here, as usual… Nice to see some people actually make good statements, though.

Ricky should have kept his ass out of the draft for a couple of years, and be #1 in 2011. Anyway, he’s playing for FC Barcelona next season. I guess now Minny never had a chance. Too bad for Ricky. Very bad advised…

BTW, he’s playing with the national team now and he’s doing really great. Can’t wait the European championship to begin.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

tavoris posted: “ESPN reported today that the Wolves actually got a deal worked out, but Rubio backed out.” Yep, and in a quote from Wonder Boy himself he said :”I made my decision so I can have more time to prepare for the NBA rigors” or something to that effect. So if you weren’t ready THIS year, why did you declare in the first place, dipsh*t? Or are you lying because you didn’t get picked by the Knicks or a more desirable locale and am just trying to cover and pass the story from hand to hand to make up for the fact you dicked over a franchise? Nah, that couldn’t be the case, could it?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    Co sign brad long.

  • tavoris

Brad, I don’t think he’s made a BAD decision to stay in Europe…I actually think it’s a good decision. However, I think entering the draft-and getting a franchise’s hopes up-when you’re not ready (and have an easy escape that collegiate early-entry candidates don’t) is kinda messed up.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

So when he was “lead” into making really good business decisions with his deals with Nike, McDonalds, etc. and got help with those from his parents, there’s no words for THAT? Please……

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Early-entry candidates can’t play basketball in Europe if they chose too? News to me. I’d like to introduce you to the third point guard that Minny drafted.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

And yeah, he did make a smart business move to stay in Europe and save himself that buyout money that was required, but again, where does that wash his hands clean of the Wolves losing out on an incredibly solid pick for the next two or three seasons (if he even comes, and if he does, to the Wolves themselves)or missing out on another potentially great player they used the pick for him on?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Liar, liar, pants on fire. B Long, what bothers me is all the lying coming out of his camp. Wolves had a deal on the table and he passed on it because he hopes that by 2011, they’ll trade him to another more desirable team. That’s the end of the story. At least Franchise and Yi were upfront about it. All that BS about the buy out or being ready for the rigors of the L, blablabla. I’m not knocking him for exploring his options, it’s just that his camp is so phony. Before the draft, he was talking about ‘playing for free if he had to’ and that his dream was playing in the NBA right now. Bollocks.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

G*ddamnit. First this and now I actually have to agree with eboy? Im going back to bed.

  • WhaHos

I blame all this on Lang Whitaker, Wolves fans- GET HIM

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

David Khan dicked over the franchise when he took back to back pg’s in the top ten.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

If only message boards were around when the Blazers drafted Sabonis…..

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Explain this to me, people. How is this situation vastly different than Brandon Jennings going back on his commitment to Arizona last year and heading over to Italy to make money and do what was best for his family? Isn’t that exactly what Rubio is doing? Oh yeah, it’s because you guys wanted to see Rubio in the league THIS year and now you don’t get too.

  • JoeMaMa

He’s 18, going to make millions in his home country, and happy.
No one should be so mad at what he did. This is, first and foremost, a business. He made a business decision and when he comes to the league he’ll get top 5 money, and he’ll be 20.
He probably isn’t ready for the league, but his agent likely pushed him to do this and get paid. Everone’s hating an 18 year old right now!! Cut him some slack.

  • RickyRude

    f**k him

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Bad example, Bradley.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

I love Rubio and I think he could be something special one day, but even I’m getting sick of reports about him not doing what it looked like he was never going to do anyway.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    Tad:Please explain.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Brandon Jennings didn’t “dick” over Arizona.
He refused to report for his indentured servitude, and instead went and got a real job.
Tavoris, Eboy and Z already said it, but I’ll add a little more.
If you’re making excuses for Rubio’s actions, please, PLEASE, don’t ever condemn another player for making a “business decision” that screws over their team.
    Period.
Don’t be a hypocrite. Make that promise to yourself.
I don’t condemn Rubio’s business decision, I condemn all you enablers who have refused to demand that he be held to the same standard as every other player who makes an unpopular business decision.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    JoeMaMa
Remember how made you were when Iverson made a “business decision” last year?
    I do.

  • Clipp Show 714

Its more than ok to bash him. We are all entitled to our own opinion. All this hype including the SLAM cover for him just to change his mind. PUNK. Whenever he does come over he has to be worth all this if not he will be out of the league soon after he arrives.

  • la huey

damn, slamheads. i think the hate on ricky is a little excessive. to be fair, teams should always gauge a players interest in actually playing for their team.

  • JoeMaMa

    Allenp,
I’m sure that Rubio acted under his agent’s and family guidance. He’s 18, and has done what he’s been told to do.

I don’t remember AI’s business decision. I support all players who go for their money. The only qualm I have with Iverson is the way he acted with Detroit last year about his role. Happy to discuss, of course.

  • tavoris

brad, the difference is that Rubio entered the draft from europe, while retaining the option to RETURN to europe. Can a collegiate early-entry candidate return to college if he doesn’t like the team that picked him in the lottery? No.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Allenp, you have quite a habit of twisting things people post to try and take some type of racial angle on it. I COMPLETELY supported Brandon Jennings decision last year and never once did I say he “dicked” over Arizona. Just like I don’t feel like Rubio “dicked” over the T-Wolves.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Brad: Not to get into a long, drawn out thing, but kind of like how Allenp already said. You really cannot compare an athlete who is going to play ball for a university to someone who is considered a pro and getting paid. If it wasn’t for the 1 year rule, we all know that Jennings would have made the leap to the NBA right after high school. Besides, amateur athletes back out on commitments to universities all the time. I honestly do not care about Ricky staying overseas and playing ball. That is entirely his choice.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Arizona wasn’t able to fill a roster spot for one season. The Wolves wasted a pick that could theoretically play 10 years in their system. Big difference.

  • tavoris

(straining to see the racial angle in what Allenp said).

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Brad Long
    WHERE DID I MENTION RACE?
I swear, some of you cats are paranoid. If I want to talk about race, I talk about it, y’all ain’t gonna have to search my comments looking for the racial angle. I was talking about regular run-of-the-mill hypocrisy, you are the one thinking race.
My point was simple. Brandon Jennings deciding not to sign up to make Arizona money so he could make himself money is not the same as what Rubio did. It’s not comparable.
To recap: Rubio signed up for the draft knowing he had a $6 million buyout. Rubio refused to workout for two teams who drafted higher than Minnesota and then acted like a diva with another team. Rubio got drafted 5th.
He and his camp then pretended that they just realized how much his buyout was, and that they just realized how cold it is in Minnesota.
Stop playing games. At least when Yi and Steve Francis made their power move they were upfront. Same thing with Eli Manning. Those players let it be known that they weren’t interested in playing for the teams that drafted them because it wasn’t in their best interests. PERIOD.
They didn’t try to put on a false front. And their supporters didn’t try to pretend that they were innocent little children who didn’t know what was going on.
Rubio is 18. When I was 8-years old my pops told me that by the time I was 18 I’d better have a way to support myself because he wasn’t doing it anymore. So excuse me if I don’t view 18-year olds as little children with no mind of their own. He’s not a fully grown man, but he’s not some child with no say-so in how his life works.

  • Big D

Blong, are you representing Rubio in Europe right now? I guarantee if the Twolves were in a be market, or if this were the Knicks or the Lakers, Rubio would be in the NBA right now. Rubio should have never entered the draft, if he plan was to only come to the NBA, if a big market-big endorsement team was involved. Kahn was played like a fiddle. Rubio’s family is more business, than you are giving them credit for.

  • riggs

rubio is apparently eating the only thing he can afford right now in that picture…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Where did cats get this fantasy that Rubio was some innocent babe trapped by his conniving parents and agent? WTH!
Dude has been a pro since he was what, 14? You telling me he doesn’t understand the game yet? Did anybody think Tony Parker was some innocent kid when he came to the league? How about Lebron?
    This is hilarious to me.

  • Justiin

His Barcelona team has Terrence Morris on it, so at least Ricky has that going for him.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

He signed the contract that is causing this whole problem when he was 16, Allenp. When David Khan drafted Rubio he said that he understood the contract situation and that he was willing to wait one or two years before Rubio came over so Rubio wasn’t “pretending” he didn’t know how much his buyout was. This is basically what Khan expected to happen when he drafted Ricky so I don’t understand why everyone is so pissed off at the player. Hate on the GM if you don’t like the situation. He knew EXACTLY what he was getting into when he drafted him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

This is not hilarious to me. I had a dream about Jonny Flynn last night. Pause.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I thought LeBron was a pretty innocent kid when he came into the league. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t a helluva ball player though.

and to think that minny gave up randy foye and mike miller for a guy who is a bust and isnt going to play.
    fire kahn.
randy foye and flynn could have been special.

  • tavoris

co-sign Myles…Death of Autotune was fool’s gold…cuz the rest of the album is a letdown.

  • tavoris

Brad, Kahn did a smart thing by drafting Flynn right after. this way, any hesitation by Rubio is immediately perceived as fear (as flynn is clearly more nba ready than Rubio), and not a “business decision”. If you don’t think this is gonna hurt Rubio’s perception in the states, then look at how much he’s despised now. Can you say “European JJ Redick”? the smartest thing for his development was to stay in europe, but the smartest thing for his image was to come to the NBA and man up.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dakidobf Dfrance

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Everyone knew going in that Rubio may not come. Kahn knew it, Rubio knew it, we all knew it. Kahn drafted Flynn as an insurance policy in case a deal could not be worked out. A deal didn’t get worked out, now time for plan B. I personally don’t even think the kid is that great. He woulda came over and been a bust, then you’d all be bashing him for sucking.

Co-sign Myles TO THE FULLEST. I actually had to turn the TV off yesterday because I couldn’t take it no more. The announcers PRAISED Favre for swinging for the fences in a tight double coverage while he was getting tackled. They kept talking about him like it wasn’t really Peterson’s team. Had to step away.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Apparently theres 30 other GMs who feel the same way. Theres no way in hell Id put him on a young, rebuilding roster. Its like asking Cruella DeVille and Michael Vick to dogsit. F*ck that.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

A Vick joke? Myles, my man.
What I’m learning now is that Iverson had a much worse rep than I realized.
I thought he had kind of been accepted and seen as a valuable member of the league. It’s been interesting to realize that wasn’t the case. I never thought he had a rep as a cancer.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Not really a cancer, Allen. Just very, very high-maintenance. Everyone messed up in the D. AI acted like a big baby and the Pistons had the worst gameplan ever. The Pistons asked him to fall back but the only thing was there was no one worthy of falling back for. Seriously, why was there even a debate about who should get the bulk of the shots and starts between Rip and AI? But then again, maybe you’re right and his rep is worse than I think it is. When Riles is talking about not giving up Mario freaking Chalmers starting spot…wow.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Riley said he wouldn’t let AI start? Man.
It’s crazy how this backlash has been brewing. I don’t absolve AI from blame, his flaws are many, but damn, what happened to talent trumping flaws? Do people really feel like his talent is that low now?
My real hope is that AI comes back this year, drops 23-25 for somebody, and then gets someone to giving him a longer deal. And then proceeds to either fall off completely, or just retires.
    That’s would be great.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

“UPDATE: Rubio was introduced by his new team in Barcelona today and said going to Minnesota would have “complicated” his life significantly and called it a “risky” move. He also said he didn’t see the Timberwolves as a team where he could grow as a player and win championships.”

  • rav

“He also said he didn’t see the Timberwolves as a team where he could grow as a player and win championships.”

why are people having a go at him for having this opinion?? the t’wolves have been ineptly run by mchale and now kahn, the way they nearly destroyed kevin garnett’s career for good and can anyone ever imagine them being in a position to be title contenders? he’s not saying that he wants to be on a team that wins now, he’s saying that he wants to go to a team that he feels could win a title at some point in his career, and like many people he doesnt think he’ll get that opportunity in minnesota and his career would go to waste there like what very nearly happened to KG

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Well, after that quote.. I guess there’s nothing else to say on this topic. Now, can we re-focus on the NBA?

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

Good evening everybody, back after a month of vacation on the beaches of greek islands and fter seeing live many preperation games for the greek national team before the European championship(Kalathes ain’t nowhere near the level of Diamantidis or even Papaloukas yet but he can help from the bench, Koufos became worse than he was 2 years ago, Biendrins has less moves than Koufos but he can rebound, Sofoklis lost more than 30 kg and he was doing 360 dunks on warm-ups(!!!) , Kleiza will be ok) i missed a lot of interesting news and the most importants being the two big signings from my team (Kleiza & Wafer, happy about both of them) and some really funny comments from the usual suspects that reached their pick on a trade that (thank god..) never took place: the cartoon to Olympiakos [where the legendary Jukai figured out that the shoe seller will easily average 30 ppg in the Euroleague!!!! Listen this my young friend: Josh dropped from 12 ppg in the NBA to 8 ppg in the Euroleague this year...having in mind that although both of them cannot shoot,at least Josh can get some dunks because of his size- and this is where he got most of his few points this year- my A.I. GUARANTED prediction if he gets to any top-8 Euroleague team this year: below 12 ppg and i can put money on it(but only with guys over 18 years old. Gambling is ilegal for minors here. sorry Eboy,Allenp etc) ....of course this is a safe bet since no serious European GM will do such a mistake....generally the shoe seller comments have became so hilarious that i cannot even make fun of them. that's the reason why i wrote nothing on his no-50 position on this years list...] the Rubio signing is not a big deal since Barca already has Lacovic and Navaro at guards and their problem is at the big men position where they lost both their starters(Andersen, Eliasova) to the NBA. I am mostly afraid of the Real moves that combined with the Mesina signing makes them an instant favorite for this years Final-4…. i was thinking about saving some of the things i read here about Ricky and remind you after some years but then again it is just videogame playing kids,..they’ll grow up (some of them)…finally, if somebody has ever seen Patrick Beverley playing ball i would really appreciate hearing your opinion, this guy will back-up Papaloukas and Teodosic as the third point guard for us….a good season to everybody!!!! GO OLYMPIAKOS!!!!! GO GREECE!!!!

2 more. First from Rubio to the T-Wolves website: ”The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be my first option and I wish to play with them in the near future.” Quite different from Myles quote, no? / Second from DKV Joventut: (paraphrasing from HoopsHype) Joventut and Minny reached an agreement to buy out Ricky’s contract, so he would be free to join the Wolves but — contradicting what he had said to DKV and Minny — Rubio said that he didn’t want to go to the NBA and be traded to FC Barça insted.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Hes an idiot and a liar. Did he think that people couldnt put those two quotes together? Did he lie because he didnt want to be seen as a primadonna? Because he will be regardless of where he goes now. If he didnt want to come he shouldve just said so and I couldve at least respected that. But like I said, if theres ever another Spanish American War, I know who Im killing first. Oh, and if Kahn wouldve known what type of person he was dealing wtih he couldve got Rubio all kinds of endorsements for his buy out. Tampax, Massengil, Covergirl….But hopefully he can still get a shoe deal. Im sure the Nike Air Queef will fly off the shelves.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

If he was an American blue chipper staying in college to mature as a person and player, people would be applauding his decision. But because he’s an international player staying at home for the same reason + giving himself and his family a much better economic situation (top salary, endorsements, and no expensive buy-out)he is called all the names in the book. Ohh the double standards…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

People are very dense and do not read comments. From Henry Abbott: ”He lied to us when he said, in no uncertain terms, that he would play in the NBA for free if his buyout was too much. He was, he said in June, that excited about the NBA. Now, for whatever reason, things have changed. Can’t say I blame him, he’s a teenager and all, but this is precisely what I asked him about, and it’s precisely what he said he would not do.” THAT’S what bothers people. He lied and was phony as hell. Hell, he’s even lying RIGHT NOW to the T-Wolves website.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Eli Manning, Yi Jianlian, Steve Francis were all d!cks too, but at least they were very upfront about it. From my understanding, Rubio never gave any indications to Minny that he wouldn’t play for them BEFORE the draft. / Bad example: American kids don’t have the optiuon to go back to college once they’re drafted. (unless someone can correct me on this, I’ve never seen it) / Read TrueHoop: the economic argument is weak. Minny came up with a solid package for him. + he’ll be on the rookie scale making about 3 mil for his first 4 years in the L regardless of when he comes. It would have made sense from a financial point of view to start the clock as early as possible so he could have his big pay day at 22. Now.. who knows? 24? 26? That’s a potential 8 figure loss of income.

I ain’t afraid to admit I’m still a Ricky Rubio fan. In 4 years he’s gonna be a 22 year old PG trying to do his thing in the NBA. I’ve been following this kid since he was 14, it’s no thing to wait another 2, he will just be even better when he hits the league.

Y’all are on something. How can you guys say Blueprint 3 is bad? It’s a hell of a lot better than any of the stupid $hit all these other wack commercial rappers are coming out with nowadays. Eight songs produced by either No ID or Kanye? Heaven for a Chicagoan like myself. It’s not gonna be a classic, but it’s not gonna be bad. Then again, most people nowadays don’t know what good rap is.
As for Rubio, as my boy George Lopez would say….FTP!!

OK, I could definitely do without the Timbaland-produced tracks, but my comment still stands.

Lz, if he was “an american blue chipper” who stayed in college to mature, that would mean he wouldn’t have entered the draft and screwed the team that picked him. Big difference, don’t you think? Double standard my ass.

Ricky, we need to talk. Our relationship started out faulty – I mean I liked you based on seeing the best of you. But like in any relationship, you have to handle the person at his/her best, and worst. Having said that, I think it’s time we saw other leagues. We can still be friends if you want, and I’ll talk to you in about 3 years to see how you’re doing. Like they say: if you love someone, let them go back to Europe. If they return to your league – they’re yours.
P.S. I mailed you a package to return your belongings like pictures of us together and other memories. I threw the parcel behind my back into the mail slot to remember you. Farewell.

myles you are such a hater! First off, rubio is going to be a great nba player whether that was this season or 2 years from now. He made a decision for himself and his family and it does suck but it is what it is. Yeah he dicked over minny but so what? He was in a rare position to do whatever he pleased. Don’t hate on the dude for making a decision that he felt was right for him. I just wish he’d get to the league already so all you haters can shut up about ricky.

  • NM23

The lottery is as it sounds, a lottery. For the most part you’re not sure who is going to draft you, therefore you should play for whoever drafts you. That is if playing in the worlds best league is what your intention is. Someone mentioned a quote that Rubio mentioned he didnt foresee winning ‘chips in Minny? Well, no team in the lottery ‘appears’ to be winning championships, thats why theryre in the lottery. Cos they suck. However you stick it through and build the team and chemistry to win…Was Chicago considered ‘chip quality when they drafted MJ? dint think so….

What a shame to read all of those comments just based on what media says, it looks like you can’t afford the fact that basketball fundamentals is no longer belongs to you. NBA still is the best league directed by great business men who cares about their money and prefer to choose foreigners players. Who in America got the achievements that this kid has at just 18? time will say if he is good enough to dominate the league or run a tema to a championship, I hope all of this stupid comments just motivate the kiddo to prove what he got to say in a basketball court that is a lot more than any other on his age.

Excuses for all the basketball true lovers who in just three minutes will realize this kid is awesome regardless wherever he was born. I like how people circumvent the real issue when they have no arguments. Who said he couldn’t play? Who said that he couldn’t stay in Europe if he wanted to? Fran Vasquez (his teammate) didn’t report to Orlando when they drafted him in the lottery but he caught no heat for it. Why? HE NEVER SAID THAT PLAYING IN THE NBA NEXT YEAR WAS ALL THAT WAS ON HIS MIND AND THAT HE WOULD PLAY FOR FREE IF HE HAD TO.

Enigmatic, in that respect, you are correct. however, much more is expected from Jay-Z than this drivel. “Death of Autotune” tricked the hell outta me…had me thinking he was really gonna take hip-hop to a level where NO ONE could dispute its musicality…but then every other track is just like every other Jay-Z track.

Call everyone else all you want, but the no good American kids here are more civil to every other commenter than you’ll ever be. But we see through your games and you do it so people will pay attention to you. An Internet troll, no different than the rest. Thought you were banned to a cave forever, this is worse news than anything Rubio could ever be around here. Stop pressing submit and read that new thing under the button, if you even can in your haste to hate. This of course is all in vain and CARLOS DELFINO FAN #1 will call me a kid & continue the verbal diarrhea. And hey, Carlos Delfino, better NBA player than Rubio, right now. High five Spanouli/NICK KALATHES/alternate name#15!

this isn’t even about basketball anymore. and that’s exactly what this is, if you’re not going to talk about basketball and the relevant topics with it, don’t even bother posting. nobody wants to deal with your bs. with that said, Rubio’s stock in the NBA just plummetted 60 points. Jonny Flynn’s stock up 20 points today.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

It seemed doomed from the start anyway. Way to go, David Kahn. And for Rubio’s camp, as much Barcelona seems like a better place to them than Minny right now, unless Rubio competes in the NBA against the likes of CP3 and Deron Williams and proves he belongs, he’ll never have a globally respected legacy. The NBA is the highest level of competition, and will be for decades to come. Unless he comes here someday, he’s still unproven, and will be forgotten. But the entire summer’s drama has definitely done a lot to ingratiate himself to Minnesota and the entire NBA fanbase, I’m sure. So good riddance.

  • Shem

ricky rubio has no jump shot, he is not very athletic either. If he came to the nba this year he may have averaged a couple assists but he wouldnt have had a good year, its good that he decided to hold it off.

Anton’s comment and Spanny’s return made this thread a classic.
I’d go into a comment about how Spanny justified Delfino’s low scoring because Europe is a team game and use the same justification for why Childress only average 8 points instead of 12, but you know, with his higher intellect and all, that kind of logic doesn’t register with him anymore. He’s gone beyond it.

  • http://dsfjkf.com Jukai

Oh, and to comment on the actual subject:
-Rubio is still a top ten point guard at the age of 18. Which is amazing.

@dial up….: Calderon is top-8 in the NBA and top-4 in the world (or “FIBA-basketball” as you like to call it) only after Deron,Parker,Nash(in that order). My updated top-30 players in the world is coming soon…(no Delfino this time….).

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I think Jukai meant a top ten point guard in Europe. Or at lease I hope he did. Unless he is discounting Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Deron Williams, Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris, Tony Parker, Chauncey Billups, Rondo, Andre Miller, & Derrick Rose. I’ll stop at ten to be fair.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

Nash? are u kidding? Chris Paul is better than Nash.

Eboy: I don’t think Andre Miller is better than Rubio. That being said, I can’t really debate those nine and I’m sweating you’ll pull one more out of your ass so I’m going to retract my statement.
Calderon is top-15 in the NBA. Probably worse in the worlds. I’d take Navarro over Calderon any day of the week. Calderon’s a more valuable leader than actual player.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

@Eboy…..: Greek tragedy being one of the greatest achievements of human inteligence through out the centuries, this is definitelly a compliment….better stay with more simple ways of cursing cause after a certain(unfortunatelly low) level it is clear that you are getting confused….

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Whatever his name is should now be referred to as The Greek Tragedy from this day forward. Yeah, Jukai, I’m not sure if Jason Kidd at this advanced age could be included, or Jason Terry, or Russell Westbrook or even Kirk Hinrich.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Eboy
Don’t sleep on that Westbrook boy. I see him making a nasty leap this year or next year.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I was actually being sarcastic, Allen, but it doesn’t matter…..I wouldn’t take the kid over any of the guys I mentioned.

  • tavoris

some posters up here are so very confusing…and Jukai, substitute Mo Williams for Andre Miller if you don’t like him. Or even Kirk Hinrich. Ultimately, Youtube lore and one strong Olympic showing do not make him a proven commodity. He’s a fantastic prospect, but a prospect nonetheless. Andre Miller is a proven NBA point guard-one of the few “pure” point guards that exist. Shane Heal did well against the US years ago, and we know how that panned out.

  • http://dsfjkf.com Jukai

Eboy: I would take none of those guys over Rubio, that’s downright ridiculous. Mo WIlliams would probably wound up a top ten. There are one or two point guards in Europe (and maybe John Walls) I’d take over Rubio as well.
But this is what I don’t like about the whole Rubio hating thing… Rubio has turned out to be a Rick Barry-level creep. He could probably hang with Kobe. But saying you’d take Terry or Kidd over Rubio? That’s downright insulting. I know European talents don’t always pan out, but neither do kids coming out of college… yet did anyone say “You know, Rose may be good, but he’s still a prospect. I’d take Jason Terry over Derrick Rose.” Hell no. So why does everyone believe–
You know, f it. Kids a jerk. I’m wasting way too much energy defending this guy.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Since he is a PG on his team, i’ll even add Gil to the list of PG’s I would take over Rubio.

  • ClydeSays

Isn’t Rubio’s Euro buyout around 7 mil? What team would pay that for a 18 yr old PG? Draft hin, ok, but don’t pretend you’re going to lay out that money or bring him over immediately.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Top 10 point guard… That’s a joke. For a second there I thought you were serious.
