Blazers Ink Aldridge to $65 Million Extension

by Marcel Mutoni

Following a somewhat nerve-racking summer, Portland Blazers fans can breathe a sigh of relief: LaMarcus Aldridge has been locked up for the long-term. However, the team did not secure his services at a cheap rate.

Portland has reportedly signed Aldridge to a five-year extension that will make the 24-year old (who posted averages of 18 points and 7 rebounds last season) a very rich man.

Yahoo! reports:

The Portland Trail Blazers have reached agreement with forward LaMarcus Aldridge on a five-year extension worth more than $65 million, NBA sources said. The deal assures Aldridge between $65-68 million with incentives that could push the total value closer to $70 million.

LaMarcus and his employer had been negotiating for quite some time, and some had begun to believe that the forward was unhappy with the length of the negotations (especially after the Blazers had enthusiastically re-upped Brandon Roy’s contract).

Both sides had until October 31st to reach an agreement, ensuring that LaMarcus Aldridge would not be able to test the free agency market next summer.

It’s a lot of money for a young player, one who despite his massive talent, has yet to put it all together. Evidently, the Blazers are betting that in time, their gamble will pay off.

    he earned it anyway

    first!

  • tavoris

that’s a VERY resonable deal for Portland…I’m back on the Kevin Pritchard bandwagon…

  • 6marjons

i like him but he’s not worth that much this’ll make him one of the top paid players in the league every year of his extension.

  • Daniel

nice that we’ve signed him but dam why the hell did portland cut patty mills? I’m from Australia and to see a fellow Australian be cut from my fav NBA team, Dam wtf… Also Cavs cut an Aussie aswell…

  • Ken

Seems like they’re overpaying, at least based on where he’s at now. But then, I thought the same of Joe Johnson when he went to the Hawks, and in retrospect it was a fair price. Hopefully LA will justify this.

  • Rumar

You know what makes that move reasonable? Varejao’s contract :>

  • tavoris

this is roughly the same contract they gave Lafrentz, Deng got from Chi, and also that Varejao jacked from Cleveland…comparitively speaking, I’d think this is a great move for them…

Well I would say he’s worth more than Varejao and Bargnani, so… Good deal, and I still wish Raptors chose him instead of Bargnani.

I ‘m broke and I just bought a pair of sneakers. He’s got $65 M and get sneakers for free. Life is unfair, God doesn’t exist.

  • la huey

he can’t compare his negotiations with roy. roy’s a two-time all-star and posted monster numbers against artest in the playoffs. and he still didn’t have as quick a negotiation as he should have? what’s lamarcus done to deserve a speedy negotiation? his play better live up to those dollars.

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

    65 mili at 24…that’s cool

  • The D Train

The Oregonian is saying that this deal IS NOT completed yet. Oregonian also says that Patty Mills was not cut. According to the paper, Paul Allen loves Mills and they are instead releasing Udoka and Collins.

L.A. is moving all right…moving on up!

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

And what are the incentives worth $2-$5 Million? Steve Blake giving back rubs? Rudy Fernandez’ racist gossip corner? Greg Oden’s World War I stories?

^Funny, Anton. So, what’s that after taxes and post-taking-care-of-mom-dad-sis-bro-cuz-cuz’s girlfriend-etc.?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

I know I’m being catty, I’m just sayin’ “mo’ money, mo’ problems”.

  • tavoris

la huey…they had to get it done by NEXT Saturday…or all bets were off. If they didn’t pay the man, they woulda had to trade him, which woulda been hard to get on his rookie contract.

  • skywalker

thats too much money for him, he’ll always be just a really good role player …thats an all-star contract almost

  • Anony Mous

Dude Will average a good 20 and 8 for the next 10 years.. especially when he develops that 3 he’s been workin on. This is a good contract for him. He’s proven that he isn’t going to regress and has he ever been injured? Portland needed to keep him to keep that core together. Also.. he can be the centerpiece of a trade now if they want to move him, much like Al Jeff.

  • SLAM’sFAN

@Daniel: I believe they released Patty Mills cuz he got injured (wrist) – that’s quite serious. I think the dude is talented, after seeing him breaking some ankles in the Olypics. Eventually, he’ll be in the NBA but hopefully not with the Blazers (where he’ll be fighting for minutes against Miller & Blake…and even Bayless).

  • Cizzo

That a deal in comparison to what he will be worth bank on it!

  • Jumpman-post

yo slam’s fan RIcK Millz need to come here in Miami

  • Shem

Very good deal, now they just need a pg, sf, c that would start on any other good team

  • Anony Mous

    @Shem… really? really?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Shem: A point guard that would start on any other team? His name is Andre Miller.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    FREE JERRYD BAYLESS!

  • Dirty Sixer

To my fellow Aussies, have a look at the team section on the Blazers official website. It’s got Patty Mills bio and not Collins or Udoka, hopefully that means he’s being kept on board.

  • Shem

Notice Andre Miller hasnt been successful on absolutely any team hes ever played on and never gotten past the 1st round (meaning he was on one of those teams that have always been battling for the 8th seed but never actually been successful.. like the wizards). Jerryd Bayless is a great talent though. And at anyone that has to argue the sf or c. Not even! Nikcolas Batum or Travis Outlaw are at best role players and Greg Oden and Joel Pryzbilla are solid BACKUP centers

  • dma

This is a very fair deal. Effing Zach Randolph got the max $81M. You think portland was gonna let that mistake happen again? And Batum is very underrated. He’s the perfect guy to start on this stacked team – he plays tough D, hustles, smart and doesn’t need to score to be happy and effective.

    @SLAM’sFAN

Mills didn’t get released. Collins and Udoka did. Get your facts straight.
