Steph ‘doing what Michael Jordan did’

Meaning he won’t be playing NBA basketball next year: “‘I’m resting, doing what Michael Jordan did, enjoy life, do things I haven’t done in 16 years, keep building my empire,’ Marbury said. ‘I wasn’t going to Boston for that money. It was a prudent business decision to take off this year.’”

Nice to see that mike and steph have a thing or two in common..

  • rog123

Except jordan was actually wanted/needed by other teams.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

Jordan was wanted by the world.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

I thought he was making a movie with Bugs Bunny at first.

  • NUPE

I bet he’ll sign with somebody this year after a pg get’s hurt or underperforms. With bigger/stronger personalities on the team I could see him able to contribute still. If Mo Williams disappears again, I could see him in Cleveland.

  • T Money

@NUPE: Steph + Bron + Shaq? I’d pay a lot of money to see that.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

I really wish mike d would have given him a chance.

    He has an empire?

And by doing what Jordan did, does he mean being insanely bitter like that HOF speech?

  • memyselfand9

    ^^^lol @ insanely bitter.
    jerry krause, is that you?

  • dial up

steph will be broke by 5 yearss. 10 years at longest.

  • K3V1N3o5

LMAO hilarious! Gotta love Steph. This guy is too damn funny.

  • http://slamonline.com Big D

AKA: “No one has been offering to over-pay me, for my bad attitude.”

  • ghost of rory sparrow

Please please someone get Stephon to the hall of fame so he can have a speech. It would be greatest of all time status. Same induction year as Rasheed Wallace and Stephen Jackson

  • thalilbigkahuna

What empire is he building, exactly?

  • Ken

I think he means the Starbury brand.

  • Hum

no remember lebron said he coudn’t have a guy like starbury on his team

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

i don’t understand why everyone thinks Jordan’s HOF speech was bitter and got so much negative press. i didn’t get that vibe at all.
and for people looking for Steph’s HOF speech, didn’t he do a self boardcast where he was half naked earlier this year?

@ Brad Long: i would love to see that movie.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Stephon Marbury just compared himself to Michael Jordan. Ha. Ha. Ha.

  • http://IJustWantMyNameToLookBig.com Chukaz

somebody should remind starbury that he’s not donald trumph n that he ain’t got no empire. this dude could be broke by the time brett favre retires again n will definitely be broke by the time farve comes out of retirement again

  • http://www.twitter.com/NotebookNick thesubwayconnection

I don’t think Michael Jordan spent his years off uploading videos to YouTube and spamming Twitter. As much as I loved the Steph of old, if he gets back into the NBA after this year, I’m impressed.

  • vic21

I didn’t know MJ liked eating Vaseline

  • Statik

So Steph is gonna play baseball next season? Freakin Awesome

  • K3V1N3o5

The more i hear or see Marbury, the more I like him….Great entertainer!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

He would actually help the Cleveland Cavaliers A TONNE right now.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

But good luck to Steph. Enjoy your time off!

  • don

    building his empire?

  • http://www.oprah.com doyouwantmore

Yeah right. If he gets fat he’ll say he’s “just doing what Babe Ruth did!” If he gets shot he’s “just doing what Ghandi did!”

  • http://none prophet

Marbury has the Michael Jackson syndrome. He was pushed too hard as a child, and this is part of the end result.

  • MR4U

Did I just see a Ghandi reference?

  • MR4U

In that case…if he grows a huge mustache, loses his eye-sight, and begins penning obscure philosophical tomes, he’ll just be doing what Nietzsche did.

  • KH10

dude needs more money to build that deathstar.

  • http://www.oprah.com doyouwantmore

If he uses his talent to be competitive rather than successful, THEN he will be doing what Jordan did.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  • http://www.oprah.com doyouwantmore

Steph and Kanye West should become best friends.

  • MikeC.

I never knew that Jordan went crazy on the Interwebs and ate Vaseline and smoked weed after declining a position on a championship-caliber team. I guess it’s true that you learn something new every day.

  • http://jggamer14@aol.com jose

aas much chaos and negativity round steph..i wish him luck. hopefully retirement is wat u need 2 clam dwn and chillax…take it easy steph…….take it easy

  • K.a.

LOL at chukaz. And to think if steph did a flick with bugs the cartoon would actually be the sane one , yikes

  • zabba

Steph is an idiot to mention his name in the same sentence with Jordan.

  • underdog

I’m gonna miss him, because I like him as a player. Off the court? Not so much…

  • Anthony

Stephon you can have it all…your empire of dirt

  • Shem

hahhahha this is good, only thing MJ and Steph got in common is the shaved head and the money (gotta wonder how steph got 20 mill a year).

  • lou

I’m pretty sure Steph needs time off to learn to read. That dude sounded like a tard on the nba street series video. Obv you don’t need to be smart to play basketball, or to realize you had a chance to win a chip. One injury and his playing time woulda jumped, smarten up, you shoulda payed them to play on that team, the celtics are projected to take the east by 75% of commentators.

  • OneStep

I’m trying my hardest to not be too judgemental with this guy but… what a twat!

  • http://slamonline.com Sean

    This is just too easy.

  • rog123

It seems like nowadys the only honorable way to retire is to win a chip(cassel, robinson) or get a career ending injury(mourning, mutombo)

  • http://thatsbecauseheleftyallintherearviewutah fireman10101

Still through all the bullissshhhh that this man does, I’ll take him over anthony carter anyday, as a nuggets fan, and u mite get him for the same price nowadays too

  • Shem

@Fireman: You might but the nuggets wouldnt. Anthony Carter is paid not necessarily for on court but off court. Thats why they drafted ty lawson, Carter isnt the back up Lawson is.

  • giogolo

    uh..huh..yeah. \/\/

  • http://thatsbecauseheleftyallintherearviewutah fireman10101

    @ shem
So true but I just don’t like the fact that he gets killed just about every time he is on the court during a big game

  • ClydeSays

Are Jordan and Steph that much different?

I mean, besides the playoff wins, conference titles, MVP Awards, All Star appearances and Championships.

Pretty sure Steph won’t get to make a long, rambling speach at the Hall Of Fame though…

  • JoeMaMa

I didn’t think Marbury had a serious gambling problem that now requires him to “try out new challenges”.

MJ is awesome. He should’ve been allowed to bet on his own games like C Hustle.

  • Joe Brewer III

This is a pretty smart decision. Settle down, then come back.

  • havana

I think Steph’s new tattoo should read “When keeping it real goes wrong”
But seriously without reading through the comments here, here are a few observations:
    a) steph is the biggest waste of talent and one of the most mentally unbalanced individuals to have ever appeared (and humiliated themselves) in the public eye. I really hope that he gets some help and some support from anyone but the apparent yes men and hangers on that he seems to have around him.
    b) related to a) I think Slam is implicit in his current state more than they would like to acknowledge. In either the 5th or tenth anniversary issue (steph shirtless on the cover) Slam wrote something to the effect that he is the only player to have a book (Darcy Fey’s piece), movie (referring o Spike Lee’s He Got Game) and a magazine (SLAM) made in their honour. Even when Steph was putting up huge stats earlier in his career I felt that the hype was more a product of him being (i) from NY and (ii) “street” rather than justifiable awe inspiring talent. In the eyes of SLAM his biggest cheerleaders the man could do no wrong. In effect SLAM became one of his yes man albeit one that enabled him to have a national platform. I wonder sometimes now wether with the SLAM covers a thing of the past, Steph so accustomed to uncritical, unbiased coverage from certain sections of the media severely overestimated his popularity and underestimated the damage that his video blog would do, and decided to generate his own fanfare (although with nothing meaningful to say).. Whereas before he may have created an unrealistic image of a do good, charismatic, hustler from the streets, not by his own savvy but by others’ complicity, we are now left to see the stark, morally deprived, mentally unbalanced, unrefined, and so blatantly ignorant and selfish (re watch how it takes him about three min to ask wether his companion is ok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pPwlrRkNVU ) product that he is. As someone who purported to be his biggest supporter and to have felt a close connection with him, I hope that the SLAM members that were close to him back in the day are reaching out to him and offering him words of support (albeit not words that will feed his delusions)
    c) if anyone in the comments used or is planning to use the played out argument that “Steph is ballin, he’s rich, he’s living the life, he doesn’t need no money, anyway he’s made much more than you so he must be smarter than you” just remember that the odds are against him. Well over half of nba players are documented to be in financial difficulties within 5 years post retirement. And if there was ever an individual who I’d bet would go bankrupt it is unfortunately Steph. Even Antoine Walker blindsided me, if it can happen to him, it can definitely happen to Steph

  • http://www.myspace.com/weezyleezy337 Gametime Weezy

steph has more money then all of u…stop hating. havana that whole little essay u just wrote is wack as hell. he was nice! and he gives back 2 the community. yall just haters period.

  • rikson

@gametime: Wish you would have written an essay, because that was just USELESS….

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

If he needs a break, he needs a break. But the Celtics’ title hopes a year from now are quite a bit bleaker since their big 3 will by then be approaching their mid 30s… so Steph might just be walking away from his best shot at a title yet.

  • SmooveRhino

Steph is confused dude homeboy is lost!!!!!!
