Steph ‘doing what Michael Jordan did’

Meaning he won’t be playing NBA basketball next year: “‘I’m resting, doing what Michael Jordan did, enjoy life, do things I haven’t done in 16 years, keep building my empire,’ Marbury said. ‘I wasn’t going to Boston for that money. It was a prudent business decision to take off this year.’”

@Fireman: You might but the nuggets wouldnt. Anthony Carter is paid not necessarily for on court but off court. Thats why they drafted ty lawson, Carter isnt the back up Lawson is.

    @ shem
So true but I just don’t like the fact that he gets killed just about every time he is on the court during a big game

Are Jordan and Steph that much different?

I mean, besides the playoff wins, conference titles, MVP Awards, All Star appearances and Championships.

Pretty sure Steph won’t get to make a long, rambling speach at the Hall Of Fame though…

I didn’t think Marbury had a serious gambling problem that now requires him to “try out new challenges”.

MJ is awesome. He should’ve been allowed to bet on his own games like C Hustle.

This is a pretty smart decision. Settle down, then come back.

I think Steph’s new tattoo should read “When keeping it real goes wrong”
But seriously without reading through the comments here, here are a few observations:
    a) steph is the biggest waste of talent and one of the most mentally unbalanced individuals to have ever appeared (and humiliated themselves) in the public eye. I really hope that he gets some help and some support from anyone but the apparent yes men and hangers on that he seems to have around him.
    b) related to a) I think Slam is implicit in his current state more than they would like to acknowledge. In either the 5th or tenth anniversary issue (steph shirtless on the cover) Slam wrote something to the effect that he is the only player to have a book (Darcy Fey’s piece), movie (referring o Spike Lee’s He Got Game) and a magazine (SLAM) made in their honour. Even when Steph was putting up huge stats earlier in his career I felt that the hype was more a product of him being (i) from NY and (ii) “street” rather than justifiable awe inspiring talent. In the eyes of SLAM his biggest cheerleaders the man could do no wrong. In effect SLAM became one of his yes man albeit one that enabled him to have a national platform. I wonder sometimes now wether with the SLAM covers a thing of the past, Steph so accustomed to uncritical, unbiased coverage from certain sections of the media severely overestimated his popularity and underestimated the damage that his video blog would do, and decided to generate his own fanfare (although with nothing meaningful to say).. Whereas before he may have created an unrealistic image of a do good, charismatic, hustler from the streets, not by his own savvy but by others’ complicity, we are now left to see the stark, morally deprived, mentally unbalanced, unrefined, and so blatantly ignorant and selfish (re watch how it takes him about three min to ask wether his companion is ok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pPwlrRkNVU ) product that he is. As someone who purported to be his biggest supporter and to have felt a close connection with him, I hope that the SLAM members that were close to him back in the day are reaching out to him and offering him words of support (albeit not words that will feed his delusions)
    c) if anyone in the comments used or is planning to use the played out argument that “Steph is ballin, he’s rich, he’s living the life, he doesn’t need no money, anyway he’s made much more than you so he must be smarter than you” just remember that the odds are against him. Well over half of nba players are documented to be in financial difficulties within 5 years post retirement. And if there was ever an individual who I’d bet would go bankrupt it is unfortunately Steph. Even Antoine Walker blindsided me, if it can happen to him, it can definitely happen to Steph

If he needs a break, he needs a break. But the Celtics’ title hopes a year from now are quite a bit bleaker since their big 3 will by then be approaching their mid 30s… so Steph might just be walking away from his best shot at a title yet.
