Earl Boykins is Shockingly Strong

The little dude can bench press close to three times his weight. Mind boggling: “Earl Boykins man is listed at 5-foot-5, 139. His max bench press is 315 pounds. This makes him the Wizards’ strongest pound-for-pound player. And a lot of people, I told him, are surprised by that number. ‘I think they should be,’ he said. ‘I think they should be.’ Teammates, too. I guess to NBA veterans and longtime observers, the 315 number is sort of legendary, but to newcomers, it’s still a shock. If Shaquille O’Neal could bench a number in the same proportion to his weight, he’d be hoisting 736 pounds.”

His new nickname should be The Ant. They can lift multiple times their weight as well. Plus they’re, you know, little…

  • AlbertBarr Posted: Nov.20 at 10:23 am
    THE ANT!

  • CDef28 Posted: Nov.20 at 10:33 am
    Good call Hisham.

  • niQ Posted: Nov.20 at 10:34 am
um.. That was supposed to be my post.. Don’t know why it showed up as CDef28..

  • CDef28 Posted: Nov.20 at 10:36 am
Shaq would also have to push the weight up a lot more because of his long arms. Even though Earl’s arm length is that of most twelve year olds, the feat is still extremely impressive.

  • Wayno Posted: Nov.20 at 10:38 am
wow…that’s insane man. Dude hasn’t played in 1 1/2 years then comes in and drops 20…gotta love it.

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Nov.20 at 10:41 am
I thought he was stronger, but Shaq can only lift 4 Wizards’ girlfriends weight.

  • CDef28 Posted: Nov.20 at 10:41 am
Yeah niQ I have been getting your info on my page. It’s odd to say the least.

  • SK Posted: Nov.20 at 11:03 am
Your math is way off…2 times 139 is 278 pounds.
So if he benches 315 pounds, that’s 2-1/4 times his own body weight. Saying 3-times is a bit excessive. Still, Boykins is tough.

The Ant, hahaha I like it. Man, I should do some push-ups, I’m embarrassed reading all this. Just read on hoopshype Boykins does 500 push-ups in about 10 minutes.

  • rikson Posted: Nov.20 at 11:27 am
Yeah, Boykins does everything except growing….

  • Bigi Posted: Nov.20 at 11:54 am
    @Wayno: He HAS played @ Europe…

  • Wayno Posted: Nov.20 at 12:05 pm

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.20 at 12:37 pm
@logues: yeah i thought that was an established fact when he used to play for nuggets. always loved his game though. he’s like a mini iverson.

  • niQ Posted: Nov.20 at 1:04 pm
The ant is cool, but not all that flattering, lol.

  • a_whiteman Posted: Nov.20 at 1:51 pm
Ya this is old heard this while he was in denver, still impressive

  • chiqo Posted: Nov.20 at 1:55 pm
like a mini-iverson, minus the whole practicing, passing and weight-lifting stuff.

  • Big D Posted: Nov.20 at 3:54 pm
You’re math is off by 102 pounds to make it 3x his weight, but that is a lot of weight to bench for a guy who weighs 139 pounds.

  • Yesse Posted: Nov.20 at 4:26 pm
Wayno, he has played that time in Italy.Although his performance is impressive.

  • LeoneL Posted: Nov.20 at 8:15 pm
I think his trainer back in Denver said that Boykins is the strongest NBA player pound-for-pound and you can tell that to Ben Wallace.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.20 at 9:25 pm
If The Ant isn’t a good name, call him a Rhino Beetle.

  • Sturm Drang Posted: Nov.20 at 11:36 pm
Urr. Earl Boykins and other diminutive players that have or had a decent NBA career get me pissed off about the basketball in my country. Basketball is ridiculously popular where I’m from, but the players are, well, quite frankly, lazy in comparison with their American and Euro counterparts. Ya, my countrymen are shorter, but that’s not the problem. Their level of physical fitness, their dedication to training… it’s just sad. I go to the same gym as certain college basketball players and the weight they squat is pathetic! You go Earl Boykins! Prove that shorties can make it if they work hard!

  • Robb Posted: Nov.21 at 12:32 am
    The Ant is perfect

  • jose Posted: Nov.21 at 2:12 am
for real. this has been known.but its cool still.hell. So ur tellin me boykins culd bench shaq. hmmmm.i’d like to see that.haha

  • hooaah Posted: Nov.21 at 5:30 pm
    HOLY COW 315?!?!?

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.21 at 6:20 pm
    THE ANT!

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.21 at 7:45 pm
    Ant Boy -kins…

  • Shem Posted: Nov.22 at 1:39 am
Earl Boykins is the strongest pound for pound athlete.. there is. Literally a lot of players not just in nba cant even bench 315 and this guys 5’5 130.

  • Jay Cutler Posted: Nov.22 at 2:05 am
Whoa there fellas! The feat is impressive but let’s not get ahead of ourselves; there is no correlation between max bench press and basketball success.

  • Dave Posted: Nov.22 at 2:37 am
His bench would be pushing 315lbs maybe 24″, possibly less. Shaq or Ben Wallace on the other hand are pushing the same weight 36″ or more. It’s not a very even comparison.
Chin-ups are my favourite unfair test of strength. Image Boykins hauling his 139lbs under 2′, while Shaq is lifting 320+ over 3′. Ouch.

  • ampd Posted: Nov.22 at 2:38 pm
or call him the “MANt” cuz he’s like a manly ant

  • STATUS Posted: Nov.22 at 4:52 pm
Hey, all you guys kicking around the “Ant” as a nickname need to read more comic books… LOL! The obivious moniquer for Earl Boykins is “ANT MAN”, like the Marvel Comics character, whose real name is Hank Pym. Come on guys, the man’s an Avenger, for goodness sake!!! Earl Boykins A.K.A. Ant Man… I like it!

  • Ronald Posted: Nov.23 at 5:34 am
@Status What? Are you serious? You want to name him Ant-Man? His only power is the ability to shrink and control ants! That has nothing to do with strength/size. I’m suprised with the overall tone of this article seeing how there was a SLAM article on Earl Boykins a good few years back stating this fact. And Earl has the best Nike commercial ever. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iqHIJSvs-k

  • riggs Posted: Nov.23 at 8:45 am
damn thats like 40 lbs under what i bench press and im twice his size

  • STATUS Posted: Nov.25 at 2:22 pm
I didn’t say “ANT MAN” because of any overt similarities to Hank Pym, other than being small and powerful.
I said ANT MAN for basically the same reasons other cats here said “The Ant”, I just think ANT MAN sounds cooler… LOL.
