    Post Up: Nash, Suns Rolling

    Nets still crashing and burning.

    by Holly MacKenzie/@stackmack

    Good Morning SLAM Fam.

    I’m sure you’ve been wondering where the heck the Post Up has gone. Well it’s back. Kinda.

    I was pretty sick last week –as you know, I don’t deal well with being sick– and yesterday’s Raptors/Suns game was my first real foray back into the real world after a week in bed. I did practice on Saturday and that wiped me out… The game yesterday had me worn out and yawning before 8 p.m. last night!

    Anyway, sorry for going MIA on you. I’m slowly getting back on track. Just need a little more sleep and time and we’ll be back to normal.

    What did we miss when I was out? Hmm.

    Last night the Suns pounded the Raptors 113-94. Steve Nash, aka Kid Canada, according to Grant Hill, was phenomenal. 20 points, 16 assists and some of the passes his teammates didn’t convert were even prettier than the 16 that they did. His eyes. I’d like his eyes for just one day. Not just his eyes but his awareness. That sense he’s got that tells him not just where people are (including the ones behind him), but where they are going to be. As Hill said yesterday, the Suns are spoiled, taking 20 and 16 as an “average game”.

    Nash is now averaging over 12 assists per game.

    And, yes, he’s 35.

    He hears this all of the time. It’s got to get a little annoying to constantly have people remind you of your age. Even when you’re balling, as Steve most definitely is. Yesterday though, he was happy, smiling, comfortable as ever. Canada truly is his home and it is so very proud of Mr. Nash.

    Don’t look now, but the Suns have tied the franchise record for best start at 14-3. Didn’t see that one coming.

    Lawrence Frank and the Nets. We knew it was coming and still, I felt awful. Chris Douglas-Roberts’ tweet made me feel worse. It’s always the coach to go and can you really blame the organization when the team is standing at 0-16, about to face one of the best teams in the league to tie for the worst start in NBA history? It just feels like he’s had so many variables go against him this year. That trade with Orlando, they are really going to miss Ryan Anderson as he continues to get better and better. The injuries, jeez, he’s even had to deal with H1N1 slowing his squad down.

    Thinking of LF, who always made me smile to think of his beginnings as a basketball manager in college. I was a basketball manager in college. I didn’t work under Bobby Knight, so it was a little different, but one thing that remains the same: To do that job well you simply have to love the game. His love and devotion to his craft was always something that I respected about Frank. I know he’ll find another gig elsewhere, but it just sucks that this is how the season had to start out for him.

    It also sucked watching that Lakers/Nets game last night. With LA doubling NJ’s score a few times and going on to win by 19, New Jersey now has to head home and figure out how to get a win against former Net Jason Kidd and the Mavericks. I hope they break through soon.

    If the Hornets can stay afloat until Chris Paul returns, the maturation and “learning on the job” that Darren Collison has had to learn in his absence is going to help that team finally be able to get Paul more rest without the team falling off rapidly while he catches his breath.

    The Timberwolves found a way to win last night, defeating the Nuggets in Denver, 106-100. Ryan Gomes had 27, while Jonny Flynn and Corey Brewer each added 16 points apiece to nullify the 32 that Carmelo scored for the Nuggets. Minny won despite giving up a 40-point first quarter to the Nuggets, holding them to just 12 points in a disastrous third quarter.

    The Oklahoma City Thunder sure are exciting to watch, aren’t they?

    When I got home I caught the very end of the Heat/Celtics game. The Celtics are so frustrating because even though they’ve appeared to struggle this season, they are still 13-4 and you know they’re just starting to get it together. Thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Ray Allen and his family, after their youngest son, Walker was hospitalized over the holiday weekend. Thankfully he is back home and doing well.

    The Magic crushed my heart on Saturday, taking down the Bucks by two and last night they had just enough to drop the Knicks to 3-14 on the season.

    Did you see the Youtube clip of Charlie V breaking his nose against Ben Wallace’s hip? If you haven’t, resist the urge. Almost got a headache just looking at that. Yuck. The Pistons got a huge victory over the Atlant Hawks, though. Tell me this: How the hell is Detroit 6-11 and Toronto 7-11? My goodness.

      in addition to charlieĀ“s broken nose story: the host of the halftime show declared it as “itĀ“s just a broken nose”. villanueva shot his free throw, went off afterwards to get some xrays - which couldnĀ“t be done immediately because the bleeding didnĀ“t stop…but it was just a broken nose

    • Bryan Posted: Nov.30 at 9:30 am
      Kevin Durant really showed out on friday.

    • Brad Long Posted: Nov.30 at 9:47 am
      I wonder what the odds are that George Karl goes into cardiac arrest at some point on the side lines this season?

    • Bryan Posted: Nov.30 at 9:58 am
      David Lee and Nate Robinson play pretty well together. I’m going to be sad to see them go.

    • MeloMan2.0 Posted: Nov.30 at 10:04 am
      I dont have league pass so i cant watch all the nuggets games… but i was on NBA.com watching the score somehow turn to the twolves favor… and after a 15 point lead! At home!!… That was the most embarrassing loss i’ve seen in a while

    • AlbertBarr Posted: Nov.30 at 10:18 am
      No mention of the Kings? Even though they are keeping it real at home? No love for the young squad that is playing its heart out and hitting the glass to stay in games? Tyreke looks good, Casspi is coming alive, Thompson and Hawes are doin work down low and we have been playing without Kevin Martin and Francisco Garcia. At .500 early in the season, my squad is looking a lot better then all the “experts” thought they would. And they still are waiting for them to collapse and play awful…no respect. If they learn how to close out road games…watch out.

    • Z Posted: Nov.30 at 10:43 am
      apparently, the kings are so high on reke that they would be willing to let kevin martin go at the deadline.

    • Bryan Posted: Nov.30 at 10:44 am
      The kings are going to struggle when Martin comes back. Moving Tyreke off the ball was a great move.

    • Reflex Posted: Nov.30 at 10:47 am
      I watched the Grizzlies throw away a 20 pt lead in less than 10 mins to the fricing Clippers. Two truly horrible sides, Gasol was lighting up the Clips at will for most of the game, then Camby showed up and carried the team’s defensive load while lae on Gordon made layup after layup to take the Clippers ahead. Camby, Gordon & Gasol aside, everyone else involved in that game (including the coaches) need to have a word with themselves. Truly pathetic.

    • Darksaber Posted: Nov.30 at 11:04 am
      Charlie V, meet ol Ben Wallace. Now meet Ben Wallace’s bionic hip, titanium alloy and all. Have fun resetting that nose, ouch.

    • Brad Long Posted: Nov.30 at 11:06 am
      If Steve Nash’s kicks don’t get some love soon I’m gonna be disappointed. What the hell is he wearing? They look nice!

    • Jukai Posted: Nov.30 at 11:07 am
      Steve Nash’s between the legs pass to Robin was the sweetest thing ever. I’m remember why I fell in love.

    • Darksaber Posted: Nov.30 at 11:14 am
      Farmar put a disgusting rejection on Skip to my Lou last night. One sec. Rafer’s on a breakaway, next thing WHAM BAM, Jordan eradicated the layup attempt and then some. Amazing the hops on those Laker backup guards.

    • Jukai Posted: Nov.30 at 11:23 am
      Brad: Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think he’s wearing Nike Hyperize.

    • Darksaber Posted: Nov.30 at 11:23 am
      Btw. People, the Russ-ster stated yesterday that he’d only follow Gilbert0 if he (Russ) got a million followers on Twitter. Plus Nine hundred thousand to go, get on it fans of the Bengtson. (umm, might have been a little tongue in cheek there when Russ wrote that…. Just a bit)

    • Darksaber Posted: Nov.30 at 11:25 am
      Jukai: nope, he’s not. He’s wearing an as yet unidentified lowtop, Hyperizes are the distinct shoe of this season, everyone’s wearing em.

    • TADOne Posted: Nov.30 at 11:33 am
      Welcome back, Holly. Glad to see you are feeling better.

    • Sanger Posted: Nov.30 at 11:51 am
      He’s wearing the nike cradle rock lows

    • Joey E. Posted: Nov.30 at 12:13 pm
      I just want to say the Lakers starting line-up is scary scary good…..(minus DFish who will hit you with a clutch shot if you dont watch out)

    • Jukai Posted: Nov.30 at 12:28 pm
      Sanger: Aren’t those the white and purple ones? I think Brad’s talking about the darker ones.

    • Anton Posted: Nov.30 at 12:50 pm
      Kevin McHale and CWebb are developing chemistry. I don’t know what’s real anymore.

    • James the balla Posted: Nov.30 at 1:09 pm
      OMG, Farmar’s block was ridiculous. He actually got up quite high!!

    • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.30 at 1:38 pm
      I wonder what Mark Cuban thinks when he sees Nash having ANOTHER All Star/MVP caliber year?

    • Z Posted: Nov.30 at 1:39 pm
      farmar had one of the highest vert in his draft combine. no, seriously. 40 inch. i think he’s one of those that can’t jump quite as high with the ball in his hand.

    • Sanger Posted: Nov.30 at 2:21 pm
      Jukai- same but those are just the steve nash PE’s

    • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.30 at 2:28 pm
      some people never learn. what are the suns going to do in the playoffs? same thing they do every year pinky, lose. suns are fun to watch and all with big numbers, etc. but they will lose in the playoffs, while dallas has a great chance at getting to the finals.

    • Jukai Posted: Nov.30 at 2:32 pm
      Tarzan: Depends. Will the Suns be playing against David Stern and the mob this time when they go against the eventual champions?

    • Brad Long Posted: Nov.30 at 3:05 pm
      Hmm, Tarzan…doesn’t that same logic apply to the Mavs?

    • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.30 at 3:41 pm
      yea, the mob and stern made amare and diaw run out onto the court. nash flopped like a mofo on that anyways, jebus, get over it. brad, im not saying dallas will get there, just they have a better chance than phx.

    • nbk Posted: Nov.30 at 4:21 pm
      dallas and phoenix both have the exact same shot at reaching the finals. none.

    • doyouwantmore Posted: Nov.30 at 4:26 pm
      Charles the V is one tough mother.

    • jdubbs29 Posted: Nov.30 at 4:27 pm
      Given that the MVP is still for the regular season, I think Nash needs to be in the running for it AGAIN, especially if the Suns end up with the best record in the league. We are witnessing the greatest (regular season) point guard in league history.

    • Vikturus Posted: Nov.30 at 4:31 pm
      Scoring from Stuckey aswell as strong hustle from Big Ben and Jonas Jerebko aka JJ33 is what’s keeping Detroit going right now!

    • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers Posted: Nov.30 at 4:33 pm
      phx was OBVIOUSLY ROBBED in that series! and im not a suns fan! they SHOULD BE CHAMPIONS THAT YEAR, THEY WERE THE CLEAR CUT BEST TEAM!

    • Jukai Posted: Nov.30 at 4:59 pm
      Tarzan: Yeah, you see how it is to have a dude 80 pounds heavier than you hip check you. I know your IQ is about equal to your age, but your really at it today Tarzan.
      I’m not upset that Stern suspended Amare and Diaw. I am upset that Rondo didn’t get the same treatment a year later for doing the exact same thing… GIVEN Stern knew the f*cking mob was running game 3 in favor of San Antonio.
      NBK is on ball, though.

    • nbk Posted: Nov.30 at 5:19 pm
      @z- is that true about the kings willing to trade martin? i don’t see that happening at all

    • Dr. West Posted: Nov.30 at 6:18 pm
      @nbk- they might trade him for a real SF and a solid backup C. I don’t see Tyreke handling the PG duty again in the NBA, he mightve gotten away with it in the Calipari system, not here though. They will probably see how a 3-guard line up of Udrih-Reke-Martin works out first though.

    • AlbertBarr Posted: Nov.30 at 6:35 pm
      I was wondering where Z heard his rumor as well…who would want want Martin and have the pieces to trade for him? He can score and he does it efficiently but the Kings might consider getting some value out of him before he gets injured AGAIN or stops producing. The offense seems to flow better when he isn’t on the court.

    • James the balla Posted: Nov.30 at 7:18 pm
      I don’t care about Nash. The worst thing I hear is that Wade, Bron, and Kobe are always top 5 for MVP. And people argue about they’re defense. Nash should NEVER win MVP. Not ONCE. Because there are about 10 guys that have better offense in the league then him and about 360 guys who have better defense. You should not be able to win that award without being top 5 defense at your respective spot.

    • jdubbs29 Posted: Nov.30 at 8:02 pm
      I think the MVP is about providing w-i-n-s, first and foremost, whether its through offense, defense, or intangibles. Nash is responsible, either through passing or assists, for most of the Suns their points on a given night? For a team with the best record in the league. That puts him in MVP running and is a big reason why he’s already won 2. I just watched him a couple of weeks ago completely dominate Chris Paul. So, again, he should be in the running.

    • iLL wiLL Posted: Nov.30 at 8:08 pm
      The Raps are bullsh*t. I hate watching them, but I always put myself through the misery.

    • Dr. West Posted: Nov.30 at 8:31 pm
      Chris Paul is overmatched when he goes up against elite PG’s. DWill always wins their matchup when he goes head to head against him.

      ClydeSays Posted: Nov.30 at 1:38 pm
      I wonder what Mark Cuban thinks when he sees Nash having ANOTHER All Star/MVP caliber year?
      ___
      He probably reminds himself that the year after they let him go, they went to the finals….. and choked.

    • Dacre Posted: Nov.30 at 8:54 pm
      @James the balla - It’s not the defensive player award its the MOST VALUBLE… you can be the most valuable to your team from the sideline by cheering and leadership in the locker room. Nash deserves the award just as much as every other top teams leader. I would argue that because everyone thought he and the suns were going to fail this year that he’s even more capable. NASH FOR 3!!! PLus the finals mvp!

      jerki, of course horry checking nash would displace him, but steve exaggerated it as well. what happened in the rest of that series? spurs beat the suns, simple. iq same as age huh? i wonder how many times douchebags such as yourself have typed that same thing. im not going to name the many books ive read that you couldnt comprehend even the cover. i totally agree with rondo, he got away with an insane amount of bs.

    • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Dec.1 at 12:43 am
      jerki, youre like a dyke in a pair of dickies, cuz you just wish you were the man.

    • Jukai Posted: Dec.1 at 1:09 am
      Hey Tarzan, tell your mother to stop wearing different color lipstick cause I’m getting a rainbow around my d*ck

    • Nasty Nas Posted: Dec.1 at 1:18 am
      LOL at Jukai’s ether to Jane.

    • nbk Posted: Dec.1 at 2:14 am
      tarzan your defense of your iq is the amount of challenging books you’ve read? Way to really nail the meaning of intelligence….because intelligence is literacy.

    • Hoodsnake Posted: Dec.1 at 5:31 am
      Aw man dragging someones mother in a difference of opinion? Childish i say

    • Darksaber Posted: Dec.1 at 6:33 am
      Guys, i thought us regulars were done with the terribly personal attacks, haven’t seen Juks lash out like this in ages (same for Tarzan, if ever) why are we going there again?

    • melvin ely Posted: Dec.1 at 7:58 am
      no charlie v, no tay, no rip, no BG and the Pistons come away with a win against the 12-4 hawks. I really REALLY hope ben wallace gets another crack at the ASG, but Dwight and the walrus corpse that used to be Shaquille O’neal probably have that center spot on lock. Chances though?

    • Darksaber Posted: Dec.1 at 8:07 am
      18 rebounds and bone shattering hips, that’s a recipe for an allstar spot if i ever heard one. Hehe

    • Darksaber Posted: Dec.1 at 8:08 am
      Lol @ walrus corpse.

    • Mansonovic Posted: Dec.1 at 8:26 am
      When Tarzan defended his intelligence by telling us about the books he’s read, was I the only one who pictured Ron Burgundy hitting on Veronica Corningstone? “I have…many…leather-bound books…” And, James, as for your argument about Nash’s offence - going by current averages, he’s responsible for about 40-45 points per game in terms of his own points and those he creates. There aren’t ten guys creating those types of numbers right now. Nash deserves to be in the MVP talk.

    • Justin Posted: Dec.1 at 8:48 am
      Nash doesn’t just deserve to be in the MVP talk, he deserves to be considered the front runner! Kobe, Lebron, Garnett, etc. are all obviously amazingly great players. But they also have a superior supporting cast around them. Nash just makes everybody around him so much better. James, I nominate yours as the most ridiculous comment in a long time. I guess Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were top 3 in their position on defense huh? lol Didn’t think so. Nobody had the Suns off to this kind of start and the reason they are is Steve Nash. Period

    • Dacre Posted: Dec.1 at 8:56 am
      suns fans stand up.

    • Dacre Posted: Dec.1 at 9:03 am
      Would it be really really wrong of me to say that Bogut and Jennings should be at the allstar game this year?? I guess you have to make room for them by either having less celtics/hawks/magic players there - on the plus side i dont think Shaq is playing at an allstar level, and if the fans dont pick him i dont think the coaches will…. THIS IS MY GUESS FOR THE EAST ROSTER - based on “fan votes”.
      * Dwight Howard
      * LeBron James
      * Paul Pierce
      * Dwayne Wade
      * - I can say who makes the other guard spot, it could be vince, jennings or even AI if he goes to PHILA and ignites…
      - bench
      * Kevin Garnett
      * Chris Bosh
      * Andrew Bogut
      * Danny Granger
      * Josh Smith
      * - either AI, or Vince (Jennings?) whomever isn’t starting
      * Rajon Rondo
      _______________________
      What do you guys think?

    • Darksaber Posted: Dec.1 at 9:15 am
      Dacre: i’m firmly behind you on that, Andrew’s quite spectacular considering he fractured his back in Feb. Playing at allstar level so far, practically willed them to that win last night.

    • Dacre Posted: Dec.2 at 7:57 am
      He’s certainly raised his game, at a good time too. Quality centres are few and far between if not in the entire league, then certainly in the East. As an Australian, I’m glad to see him lift this season.
