T-Mac: ‘I’m Back’; Rockets: ‘Not so Fast’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

According to the perennially injured Tracy McGrady, he’ll resume his star-crossed career next week (Nov. 18, when Houston pays Minny a visit.) According to GM Daryl Morey, however, T-Mac may be a bit presumptuous.

Last night, McGrady and the team that employs him sent mixed messages about Tracy’s return to action. All sorts of media outlets were used by the two sides to communicate their sides of the story.

Here’s the Houston Chronicle, attempting to make sense of things:

Tracy McGrady said Monday that he would make his season debut Nov. 18. But the Rockets said neither they nor McGrady knows when he would go through a full practice, much less a game. McGrady’s announcement was contrary to comments by Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, who had said earlier Monday that there is no timetable for McGrady to play and that he would not play until he can be checked out in the Rockets’ next full practice, Nov. 23.

In his blog later, he disputed Morey’s contention that his participation in practice has been “off and on” but did not target a date for his return … But Morey had said earlier Monday that McGrady, 30, has been able only to practice sporadically and would not play until doctors and team officials consider him to be 100 percent.

Whether or not Mac feels healthy enough to play — or even, you know, practice with his teammates — is almost irrelevant at this point. He’s had way too many setbacks for the Rockets’ front office to take any more risks with their fragile asset. The ball is no longer in his court.

In the meantime, you can check out Tracy’s blog for the latest updates on his condition. Accuracy not guaranteed.

    i’m back…or my back… (argh).

  • NUPE

Rockets are doing the right thing here. T-Mac still has game and 30pt potential any night. I’d take it as slow as necessary with him and then even go slower.

  • George B

i miss his silky smooth game

  • Juice20

    Yea he can ball

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Tracy needs to work on his PR skills. He likes his predictions/misplaced statements…

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I don’t think he’ll ever be 100% again. Prove me wrong.

  • cramzy

I picked 4 players to have a ” yall must’ve forgot season” ala Dwade last year…Nash is ridiculous, Gilbert is Gilbert, AI is ….*sigh*….don’t let me down Mac!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Tracy needs to relax and wait for the team to clear him.

  • Hoodsnake

Cant wait for return of Mac. Probably get traded for expiring contracts in the offseason but he’s nice with his when his healthy. Size, height, speed, long arms, hops, a skill set better than most – he’s got at least 5 more good years left.
    The ultimate backcourt playa…

  • Orlando

I’d like to see the Lakers trade for LBJ and sign him to a minimum deal.

  • NUPE

Even an 80% T-Mac is effective. He’s a big risk and the Rockets have to figure out what to do with him. He’s like a used BMW. Once repaired properly you can get some great high performaing mileage out of him. But, the high initial cost and possibility of spending more time in the repair shop than on the road, may cause you to by a Honda instead. Cheaper up-front and you know it’s going to be reliable, just not as nice.

its time 2 get ready to see wicked failed dunks like last season again when he returns! sorry tmac but ariza got ur throne already :)

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com CDef28

    NUPE you are right.

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com CDef28

But the BMW doesn’t have as much drive as it used to.

  • AL29

Houston needs to rid itself of Yao and McGrady in order to get to the next level. One of them would have been traded by now if it weren’t for the constant injuries.

  • TMT

Kind of ironic how his favorite player was penny, now he’s following his career path…

  • http://www.myspace.com/kaz1 Forrest Crunk

NUPE with the game-winning analogy, I’ve never seen it described any better than that.

  • http://logodesignlove.com AlbertBarr

    NUPE…great analogy.

  • Franko

The rockets are great without him…(and without Yao too)

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

What if the BMW’s frame is fragile and one of the headlights is sorta lazy?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Isn’t his contract expiring? I would think they would want him to play to audition for teams before the trade deadline.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

allenp, they do plan on letting him play, just not on the date tmac set, they had set a date of nov 23 to get him an MRI and if it looks good then they’ll go from there…apparently there’s some kind of advantage for the team if tmac holds off until then, financially i mean…not sure what it is though..

Tracy need to retire im tired of his back and forth vacilation …and every time he returns he less productive. he will mess up any kind of chemistry they have now..which is more than the knicks lol

  • Cizzo

The league is getting younger daliy If was was the GM of the Rockets I would’nt wait n Mac, or Yao, or any other player sorry it’s a business at the end of the day!!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

allen his contract is expiring….in this economy that is worth more then his ability to play. he might end up in milwaukee for michael redd. actually i’m willing to bet he gets traded to milwaukee or golden state

  • http://fjdsfl.com Jukai

    Is this TMac’s fault?

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

would love to see him return fully. that is all.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

he should just do what a.i. did and quit for awhile, or he should just go to mexico and change his name because he is an injury cancer to everyone. he should keep a warning sign above his head saying cautious: may cause harm or serious injury to any persons within a 10 feet radius. haha i hate tracy mcgrady he should just retire. he spends more time on injuries than he has ever done with basketball. every time he touches a hardwood floor or a ball that is covered with leather he gets an injury. HAHAHA

  • A-Z_MVP

i agree with the fact that tmac should chill out for a game ot two. he has been injury proned for the last 2 seasons so therefore he should be smart about his playing. Rehab that injury so the rockets can guarantee a star player back on the grind. The silky smooth duo between Tmac and former Laker Trevor Ariza will be pretty dominate this season.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

i basically want to see him come back to stop comments like the above by Chazz Michael Michaels. c’mon man – he was a fantastic player whose body let him down, and you’re gonna “hate” him for that?

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

whats with the tmac hate? dude was the ultimate back in the day, it takes a helluva lot out of your body to meet the riguors of most pro sports schedules, especiall if your relatively successfully, ie play more games. i CANNOT wait for his return, and im glad to see hes eager to play although considering last few years, definitely the correct course to be prudent and wait a bit longer

  • Rusty

My fave baller EVER. There will never be another i like as much as Tmac. Makes me sad to see he is in the back end of his career.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

we don’t believe you, you need more peo-ple.

  • Orlando Woolridge

Yup, my favorite player in the L as well. I’m pulling for ya Mac.

  • http://none The Philosopher

He was never into rehab, weights, etc. It’s not looking good for him. Besides, when things go bad after he comes back, he’ll complain and throw his guys under the bus. He’s always done that. He even did it last year.

  • Hoodsnake

@TMT… Macs favourite player is Kobe…i looked it up in a couple of back issues of an ‘In Your Face Magazine’ not sure why he chose the number 1 in ORL

  • Rusty

@hoodsnake when he was younger macs fav was penny.

  • ClydeSays

I’d love to see him healthy TMac on the Rockets, but when was the last time he played close to a full season?

Doc Rivers noticed in TMac’s first practice with the Magic that McGrady had a curved spine (scoliosis) and would have a tough time keeping his back healthy in the NBA. Too bad they didn’t note that in their physical. Rockets too.

I do think some players figure out how to maintain their bodies, play with pain, rehab, train over the summer. It seems like TMac has never been one of those guys.

  • Hoodsnake

*sigh* my bad. Hope he’s fine when he returns

  • http://www.gmail.com rushmelo

to start with, the rockets were supposed to be a disaster!but they are not.they may not make the playoffs and have 50+ games this year but the truth is they have a system i place.those guys are playing good ball’ without Yao and T-mac.
    they are 4-3 till now.
    ariza has been great!
aaron brooks is gonna be a all star in the coming years
and they have good role players
put in a healthy yao and mcgrady
they may give goosebumps to the lakers.
    the point is,
if T-mac gets back to even 75% of his game
    they will be great
all we want from T-Mac is a 18-5-5 game.
