The :07 Seconds or Less Suns are Back

Phoenix is running and gunning again, and more importantly, they’re winning at a clip that has stunned just about everyone: “Gentry has the Suns back playing that fun, exciting, up-tempo offense again. His Suns are tied with the Celtics for the best record in the NBA at 7-1. His Suns lead the NBA in scoring (110.87), field-goal percentage (50.2.1%) and three-point shooting (47.1). ‘We’re back to basically doing what we did,’ said Gentry, referring to the seven seconds or less offense the Suns ran under former Phoenix Coach Mike D’Antoni. ‘We put in a couple of spins that I thought would help our team personally. But for the most part, we’re doing what we did.’ Gentry still allows his players to take quick but good shots. He has given point guard Steve Nash complete autonomy to run the offense, and Gentry simplified everything on offense and defense.”

and it works perfect for the suns

  • neaorin

The defense seems to be especially simplified. It’s either “let the other team’s guards get into the middle of the floor” or “let the other team’s big man get deep position on the block” all the time. With a little “be slow when rotating on shooters” added in from time to time, just to keep opponents guessing.

Neaorin – my sarcasm meter just exploded.

  • peter

So basically they’ve gone back to the same system that everyone loved that got them a bunch of wins in the regular season but didn’t work in the playoffs…good strategy

  • riggs

when they meet the celts agaiin they will lose, the celtics have experienced their run n gun now and will ASSIMILATE. sorry just finished watchin terminator.

  • Orlando

Who cares…everyone and their mamas know that they are going to get killed in the playoffs.

However, I was thinking, can you imagine if they do keep this pace up and put together a terrific regular season…Nash is likely to get the MVP again. What a sh*t storm of haters that’s going to create…

  • Sparker

how can u be a hoops fan and interpret this as bad news?

  • jose

    Channing Frye=Godsend….lol

  • la huey

they weren’t going to win a ring anyways. and with hill and nash in the twilight of their careers, why not let them have fun?

  • la huey

also, how sweet is gentry’s job? front row seats to a great show and all he has to do is make substitutions.

  • tariq

Bad knees…Slow Offense…Blame the Big Common Denominator!

  • underdog

Which was tha last run-n-gun team that actually won anything? Anyway, I guess the owners are satisfied when the team plays entertaining basketball and the arena is sold out… so winning is maybe not so important after(?) a global recession.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

dude winning 50 games is considered winning. Only two teams make the finals. you peopl act like making the playoffs is a bad thing. Would you rather be a Suns fan and see 50+ wins and a playoff series. Or a Clippers fan?

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

lol @ Orlando – the thought of Nash getting a 3rd MVP is outrageous, haha.
so – D’Antoni is winning nothing, and the Suns are doing well without him. D’Antoni = overrated??

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@SAB – They are still Running D’Antoni’s offense. which HE CREATED. Unlike playing, coaching can be somewhat replicated.

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

instructing people to shoot all the time is “creating an offence”? jk – i know, i know, it was just a question…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

no i get the joke lol. i just don’t want people going on a D’Antoni hate-o-thon just because the Suns that he created are having success under a different coach. Gentry from what I hear, is one of the most respected and beloved coaches in the league anyway

  • http://realcavsfans.com Anton

7 seconds or Shaq was better

  • Joe

Steve Kerr was 1 Tim Duncan 3-pointer away from looking like a genius for getting Shaq. That has to suck if your Steve Kerr. just 1 Tim Duncan 3-pointer. Wow.SMH.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

that three pointer was in game 1……they did lose 3 of the next 4.

  • erich

    Fun to watch !

  • Jesseg

The Suns offense looks good don’t get me wrong, but it’s driving me crazy how everyone is saying they are playing the same way. Watch there games! They are winning now with good bench play and clutch D in the 4th. Things they never did in the 7 seconds or less era. Gentry plays 10 deep usually. Something D’antoni would have never did. I’m not saying they will win the championship or anything, but this is definitly a different version of the Suns.

  • la huey

@Joe, if 1 fluke three pointer in the first game of the first round is what killed the psyche of that suns team beyond repair, they didn’t have the mental cajones to win a championship.

  • jrooks

    YES!!!

  • nashty

Steve “The System” Nash is back, f**K the haters!!

  • nick fan

D’Antoni is trying to employ the same system with the Knicks – except they’re calling it, “24 Seconds or Less”.

  • eball

Maybe they won’t go deep in the playoffs, but at least they’ll make it…

  • Hoodsnake

Love this team…until they have to stop someone

  • http://dsfjkl.com Jukai

There is a huge difference between the D’Antoni offense and the Gentry offense… the Gentry offense MAKES SUBSTITUTES and DRAWS COHERENT DEFENSIVE PLAYS.
I mean, Gentry is a much, much better coach than D’Antoni. Playing the rookies, drawing out more plays when the starters rest, managing Nash’s minutes WAY better (ie his rests will shift depending on how much the Suns are winning), plus the Suns are doing things defensively I have never seen them do before… SIMPLE things… like not overplaying on pick-and-rolls, focusing on sharp three point shooters, swiping at the hands of slashers… This was textbook sh*t that the Suns never did simply because they never did any of it in practice!
D’Antoni made the system but his coaching was abysmal. People need to learn this.

  • tom

plus goran dragic is really showing some excellent backup minutes for nash. and j.rich is playing with a lot more confidence compared to last season.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

PLUS. Dudley and Amundson are playing sweet blue collar D off the bench. This team is making stops when it counts people. That “peter” comment at 12.46pm was PURE TROLLING….
SOme fool asked who was the last team that ‘ran’ that won anything of merit. Some d@mn fool near out of his mind if he dont know the original lakeshow….PLUS the SUNS DID WIN in the playoffs with this style… Just wait till this suns team gets to the playoffs…just you all wait and choke on that pie.

Nash tore up CP3 last night. That should prove to all his haters that he is still “arguably” the best pg in the game. He had cp3 on skates. Everyone always says nash can’t play D. Well cp3s D was pretty weak

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

Steve Nash is a f#cking artist playin ball…Im not even a Suns fan and hope somehow we Trail Blazers can win more then them but as a basketball fan is just as much fun to watch as Bron,Flash or Kobe.. who cant understand this should call it a day and watch hockey instead…

  • One Sun

Jukai has it mostly right: The Suns are just going back to basics. They’e competing for 48 minutes and they’re playing on every possession. They have a bench who they can rely on and they’re taking the easy options – which are normally open shots.

I like Gentry and I’m glad he’ here. Even in interviews he’s laid back.

Clearly the real test is when the Suns lose 2-3 games in a row, but for now, bravo Suns, bravo.

  • jdubbs29

Nash makes it look so easy. That move in the 2nd quarter where he went between his legs, behind his back to get past Cp3 and then dishes in the lane for another easy score was so sick.

He dominated Cp3 last night, and that’s saying a lot.

(new comment day): dont worry about the drubbing in LA folks, keep it moving nothing to see here nothing to see here…

  • http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/fran_blinebury/11/12/mcgrady/index.html Dacre

Just for those NOT in the know: Alvin Gentry was on D’Antoni’s coaching staff when he was in PHX, so he can rightly say it’s his style of coaching too. haters.

  • Flipped-Out Slappity Monkey Steve

With Amar’e back and playing like an all-star, Nash posting MVP numbers and J-Rich getting comfortable in his #23 suns jersey, the playoffs shouldn’t be a big problem. All they have to worry about is penetration from other guards and Stoudemire’s foul count. Should do well.

  • Izzy

Underdog, you want to the last time a team has won championships off the back of run&gun style, how about checking out the WNBA Phoenix Mercury??? Champs 2007 & 2009.
I know, I know, some of u might thinks its is a joke to compare men’s & women’s basketball and I acknowledge the WNBA has a different style to the muscular, dunktacular NBA…but the principal of running a speedy & accurate offense is THE SAME in both leagues.
Phoenix is back – why stop someone when you can beat them on the other end of the floor???
    NASH4MVP!
