ASG Votes Are In: Iverson Among Top Guards in East

by Tzvi Twersky

A few weeks back, when the All-Star game voting results were first publicized, Tracy McGrady sat as one of the starting guards out West. Being that he hadn’t yet played a game at that point and being that he’s only played  half a dozen since then, the amount of votes he possessed left many upset. Well, to those of you who were enraged, there’s no need to be anymore; McGrady has slipped behind Steve Nash falling to third in the category of guards.

The biggest surprise as of the new tally’s publication? Allen Iverson. With over 600,000 votes, if the ASG was today, AI would be starting in the East’s backcourt alongside Dwyane Wade.

The leading vote getter overall is Kobe Bryant who, with 1,380,383 votes, has 65,000 more than LeBron James.

Aside from Wade and Iverson, James, Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard would be starting for the East.

Out West, Bryant and Nash would be in the backcourt with Amar’e, Carmelo and Dirk filling out the center and forward positions.

The All-Star game will be played Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Cowboys Stadium.

By the conlusion of voting in late January and by the  official final annoucement on January 21st, if Iverson continues missing games due to injury and the Sixers keep losing, who knows if he’ll still be in Dallas at all, let alone be in the starting lineup.

i won’t be surprised if the nba suddenly moves duncan over to the center position so he can start. didn’t that happen last year or a few years ago?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@gani/that should be happening like yesterday, Timmy or Gasol

  • http://www.cracked.com litetitan

@gani – I think it had happened in all but 2 of T.Duncans asg appearances.

The people I think deserve an all star-nod:
West starters: Nash, Bryant, Carmelo, Dirk, Stoudemire
West reserves: CP3, Roy, Williams, Durant, Gasol, Duncan, Boozer (only because I don’t like guard heavy all-star teams… sorry Monta and Evans)
East starters: Wade, Carter, Lebron, KG, Howard
East reserves: Rondo, Johnson, Pierce, Gerald Wallace, Bosh, Bogut, Lopez
    Notice how Iverson isn’t there!!!

I want to agree with you Jukai, but Rondo’s game is ugly as hell and Carter has to pay for all the other ASG where he didn’t deserve it but got it anyway. Anyway, I’m not voting Iverson in, but it’s not like we’re barring any awesome player out there.

The NBA is all politics with people voting for Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson in the all stars. U guys r dumbasses

  • Justin

^^^Politics? Uhhh..the NBA executives don’t vote them in. They have no say over what the fans vote and unfortunately I think it’s time to take the vote away from the fans. This year is a prime example.

Jukai, guard heavy all star games make them more fun to watch. When a bunch of people can rebound and get the ball going up the floor it’s much more fun. Remember the game that had Jordan, Penny, Pippen, and Grant Hill (’97 I think)? Every one of them could rebound and get down the floor in hurry and it led to a big comeback from a bunch of fast breaks. One of the better All Star games because of it

Guard heavey All Star Games are the way to go! Who wants to watch the taller players try goofy/awkward dribbling moves? lol.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Sometimes the best plays are when the taller players try goofy/awkward dribbling moves. But I see your guys point. I’d accept Ellis over Boozer.
Rondo’s game is ugly, and his two free throws did miss him the game for the Clippers, but the all-star game is about rewarding good players… not pretty players! Unfortunately, there is no more deserving point guard in the east than him. Honestly.

Also, Jordan/Pippen/Hill/Penny are all 6’7+. That’s not a small lineup. Not by a longshot!

  • DMC14

yeah right bynum or gasol get the start over amare at all star weekend (gasol is good dont get me wrong). keep dreaming buddy.

  • DMC14

    Mitch Richmond.

  • DMC14

    Q Rich can rebound.

the all star voting just needs to be changed in letting coaches not only pick the additional players, but also switch some 2 or 3 players that are voted in which they think don’t deserve the nod and give their idea of replacement, which of course can’t be their own team players, this will solve the iversons and mcgradies of the league and give a chance for ballers like dwill

I’m all for AI and T-Mac starting if that’s what the fans want. The ASG is about the ‘stars’, not necessarily the ‘best’ players. Both AI and Tmac have earned the ‘stardom’ over the course of careers and there is nothing wrong with fans recognizing and honoring that. Although under dif circumstances, fans did that with Magic after he retired. For a matter of fact, if magic or MJ were to be on the ballot this year, I’d vote for both of them. Rose, D-will and other’s may have to wait a bit to make the squad or to start, but once they establish themselves over a few seasons, they’ll get the nod from the fans. My biggest surprise so far is how few votes Shaq is getting. Not that I think he’s playing better than Dwight, I just thought his star was bigger than what it’s proving to be by the fans.

The ASG is about the fans, which sometimes means that the starter voting becomes a sort of life-time acheivement award at times

  • derrick

ivey in the all star game period would be a travesty.
    ivey only cares about ivey. i-vey i-vey i-vey i-vey i-vey……..

    @nupe
Both inverson and mcgrady have played I don’t know some 50 minutes combined. it has never been this fractured in terms of voting “my favourite players” which are one dimensional whiners biaching about starting or often injured pussees crying for not playing enough while coming back from another microfracture and then talking about how important it is to win at this stage of their ringless careers
I ain’t even seen them play this season neither do these voters, wtf

  • str8 from samoa

AI will get that starting spot. enough said.

  • Turbo Uno

Looking at today’s stats from the Sixers v.s. Blazers game…..Iverson went 7 for 11 with 19 points and the sixers got the win. Not bad for someone who just returned from a bad knee injury and is supposed to be “done” in the NBA.
