ASG Votes Are In: Iverson Among Top Guards in East

by Tzvi Twersky

A few weeks back, when the All-Star game voting results were first publicized, Tracy McGrady sat as one of the starting guards out West. Being that he hadn’t yet played a game at that point and being that he’s only played  half a dozen since then, the amount of votes he possessed left many upset. Well, to those of you who were enraged, there’s no need to be anymore; McGrady has slipped behind Steve Nash falling to third in the category of guards.

The biggest surprise as of the new tally’s publication? Allen Iverson. With over 600,000 votes, if the ASG was today, AI would be starting in the East’s backcourt alongside Dwyane Wade.

The leading vote getter overall is Kobe Bryant who, with 1,380,383 votes, has 65,000 more than LeBron James.

Aside from Wade and Iverson, James, Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard would be starting for the East.

Out West, Bryant and Nash would be in the backcourt with Amar’e, Carmelo and Dirk filling out the center and forward positions.

The All-Star game will be played Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Cowboys Stadium.

By the conlusion of voting in late January and by the  official final annoucement on January 21st, if Iverson continues missing games due to injury and the Sixers keep losing, who knows if he’ll still be in Dallas at all, let alone be in the starting lineup.

    First! The Answer!!

kobe and gasol for starter (and bynum cause stoudmeire is a pf)

  • underdog

I think it’s a great challange for SLAM readers, to turn this situation around, and give that starting position some player who really deserves it.

  • coconut

NBA.com says that T-mac would step down if he is voted a starter. Even he realizes that it would be an outrage if he would start in the ASG this season…

  • sunsnroses

stoudemire is listed as a Center for All star voting… and it looks like he’ll get the starting role.

west- nash, kobe, carmelo, dirk or gasol, and stoudemire

east- lebron, howard, garnett, but who for point and shooting guard?

im hoping derrick rose for point…

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

^yeh, but Derrick Rose has played like garbage for 90% of the season so far. And not all of the blame can be put on his ankle and Del Negro. Just 90% of it.
Wade is the SG, it’s not close.
I really hope that Iguodala makes the Game at SOME point in his career.
If Deron Williams isn’t on the squad for the West this year… travesty.

  • Chris Ujma

This is just idiocy. Every year the ASG gets more comical.
Iverson, the guy who set an ‘amazing’ example of leadership and acted like a tw*t, potentially gets ‘rewarded’ with another line to his accolades when his pathetic career is over.

That said, maybe it is a display of public FEAR.
‘oh my god, what will AI do if we ask him to come off the bench for the East?!?! QUICK, vote him in as a starter’

  • anon

Is there any question about the 2 spot in the East? Of course it’s Wade.

  • wilz

uhhh if he’s not in the starting lineup hes not in the game..no question

The Hornets should be moved to the East for All-Star purposes.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Todd Spehr

Wouldn’t Iverson have first appeared on the ballot as a Grizzly – as in, in the West?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

I love fan voting. Iverson is definitely deserving.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This goes to show just how popular AI really is. He started the season on the west ballot for Memphis! and was waived than he was not on the ballot for 32 days and those 32 days the other guards got ahead. After the first returns he was 6th on balloting and obviously it was because of the not being able to vote for him for 32 days. Than he goes to Philly and by his first game he is back on the ballot and now he is 2nd in East guard voting. Pretty impressive. Obviously he does not deserve it he has played 8 games but than again what is an ASG without AI? Hope he goes for 25, 5 and 7 and wins the MVP.

  • Slamfan4life

No love for rose nd Noah?what the eff

  • Michael Scorn

This is all Magic Johnson’s fault. He set the precedent for starting in the ASG even though he was retired in 1992!

  • BostonBaller

#1 The Magic situation was much different (no explanation needed) #2 The ASG is about popularity with the fans not necessarily about merit (it just so happens that some of the favorites are indeed worthy. I shudder every year b/c the “fans” always vote for guys not even playing. I’m surprised that Blake Griffin isn’t among the leaders. hahaha. I think there should be a rule that if a non deserving player gets voted in as a starter they automatically have to come off the bench or just wipe out fan voting for starters all together. It’s partially the L’s fault for leaving injured guys on the ballot…take them off if need be (at least on line) Go Rondo

  • kh

These results are more like it! A.I and Nash!

  • JD

WTF? Where R all these AI voters comin from? He’s not even worth a place in the NBA top 50 any more, let alone ASG

  • Michael Scorn

I voted for him 6 times already

  • wilz

he wont come off the bench…starter or bust

  • Gatsby

Comment about him not being in the top 50 is ridiculous. I can understand people being frustrated by AI stans, but transferring that into discrediting a career is just as stupid.

and its an all-star game, people want to see AI, so he deserves to be an all-star. It would only be a travesty if coaches voted him on. thats where the balance lies. he should either start or not play.

  • dizzle

Really. Gasol over Dirk. Oooooookay bud. Rondo should start at PG for the East.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

WTF?!!OUTRAGEOUS!THIS IS SIMPLE SH!T…EAST-RONDO(JOEJOHNSON) DWADE BRON KG(BOSH) D12…WEST NASH(CP3) KOBE MELO DIRK(GASOL) STAT(NENE)…see guys that wasnt too difficult was it? just center out west is a litle weak, gasol should be listed as center.BRANDON ROY and DWill MUST BE THERE also.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Hey Allenp, can I get a “you were right Juks” up in this comment section

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

Yo A.I. my man n all…but Rondo deserves some allstar game love this year over D. Rose…simply cuz they 1st in the east n he runs the show over there. But def got no prob wit A.I. starting…he always puts on a good show runnin the point in allstar games.

  • Kas

If I were to pick between LBJ and Steve Smith right now to run my team, I would no doubt pick SS. LBJ has no fundementals whatsoever. If you like LBJ, you hate baketball.

  • Kas

The day Derrick Rose is an All-star, I retire as a fan. He is less of an all-star than shawn marion. and shawn aint no all-star

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Kas: Please retire as a fan very, very soon.

  • Jose

Give A.I. tha dang Startin spot. IDK if thisll be the last time he plays ball. Give him the starting PG spot. He’s earned it……Somehow….dont ask me how tho….veteran’s nod i guess

  • Young C

Seeing as how the all-star lineup has two guards in the backcourt and not PG,SG, then everyone should be voting Wade and Joe Johnson as the starters. Rose, Rondo and Carter are nice but none of them are carrying their team the way Joe Johnson is. Unfortunatly, Joe gets no love because only die hard NBA fans have ever heard of him.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Anderson Varejao for all star! (if they counted tough-ass defense in a deceivingly soft shell).

  • robb

Tmac and Iverson receiving so many votes is just…I can’t even put it into words.

    People are people.

  • Turbo Uno

A.I. back in the All Star game? NICE!!!
Great to see he still has fans even after all that crap the media likes to print about him. Stern must be really pissed that as much as he tries to kick him out the league….the little dude is STILL a crowd favorite.

  • realD3

  • matt

reald3: 18, 5 and 3 shooting under 40% is an allstar to you?

wade, johnson, rondo (just for a pg), then the coaches (who can fudge positions) can get granger (24,6,3,41%) or iggy (19,7,5, 42%) in there

  • M-Blog

Pardeep,I agree. And you know the NBA is loving it because he brings in big money for them ..I don’t see why people are so upset , AI earned everything that belongs to him ..GO AI

  • J

no surprise for iverson being there, this is fan voting right? i just hope there are some considerations for Crash, Jennings, Brook Lopez, and Bogut. and please put DERON WILLIAMS there. how about the L put up an all-star game composed of snubbed all-stars? how’s that?

  • http://www.cracked.com litetitan

Why would TMAC want to step down anyway if he’s being VOTED in… with the understanding that he’s popular enough to get voted as a fan favourite in the first place?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@anton, LMFAO…thats very true dude…he looks skinny and soft but guy is an EXCELENT defender and tough as sh!t..and is it me or his skill level on offense looks way better?

  • http://www.cracked.com litetitan

would anyone be offended if I said Zac Randolph deserves a “look in” for the allstar bench this year?

  • LeoneL

How about four teams? That’d be three All-Star games during the weekend. LOL

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

@Sporting, for reals. People see the flopping and b!tching about calls (both have decreased) but they don’t take the time to watch him front the best PF’s in the league on a regular basis. As far as offense, he can hit a turnaround J in traffic but not when he’s wide open. Such is his enigma. Boy’s earning his contract though.

  • http://twitter.com/manueii manueii

I’m surprised nobodys mentioned TYREKE EVANS. Dude is Averaging 20-5-5…and as far as D-Will he should be starting this year. CP3 has NOT played better than him THIS YEAR. It WOULD BE UN FAIR to let him start with all those game he missed. Besides that, I’m glad Steve Nash is up there, he’s having a Monster COMEBACK type season. And as far as AMARE as a CENTER? Doesn’t he have to learn some type of post moves first? Ha just saying.

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

I think TMac gets maad votes from chinese fans that only know the rockets cuz of yao ming…honestly. Yea evans is ballin real hard but there’s 2 many pg in the west. Nash, deron, cp3, and billups all need 2 be there. Monta ellis, j kidd and tyreke is that next tier rite there. In the east its gotta be Rondo n D Wade starting. AI gettin mad votes now but it will decline. VC needs 2 b there too. He was the only one on the magic that came 2 play vs. The C’s on christmas.

  • Nick Rattner

AI’s selection proves why fan voting improves the all-ster game. Over the last few years, the asg has been as flavorless as non-fat matza; why not vote in some drama? Coaches or numbers wouldn’t do it… but that’s not what the game is about. Though clearly different from the Magic scenario, the AI situation offers a great player a chance to defend his greatness one last time. There probably won’t be any more chances at glory for Iverson, so I’m happy to watch this one. We’ll see.

  • Tre

    jennings needs the guard spot

  • LA Huey

Anton and Sporting, you guys see Andy with his silly moves against the Lake Show yesterday? They deserved his own “NBA: Where Varejao Happens” commercials….Oh, and Iverson just Rondo’d Rajon for his All-Star spot.

  • kevin

mcgrady is ahead of Cp3 in asg votes sad

  • http://www.cracked.com litetitan

mcgrady was better than CP3 through the start of the season…. at being injured.

  • gani

i won’t be surprised if the nba suddenly moves duncan over to the center position so he can start. didn’t that happen last year or a few years ago?

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@gani/that should be happening like yesterday, Timmy or Gasol

  • http://www.cracked.com litetitan

@gani – I think it had happened in all but 2 of T.Duncans asg appearances.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

The people I think deserve an all star-nod:
West starters: Nash, Bryant, Carmelo, Dirk, Stoudemire
West reserves: CP3, Roy, Williams, Durant, Gasol, Duncan, Boozer (only because I don’t like guard heavy all-star teams… sorry Monta and Evans)
East starters: Wade, Carter, Lebron, KG, Howard
East reserves: Rondo, Johnson, Pierce, Gerald Wallace, Bosh, Bogut, Lopez
    Notice how Iverson isn’t there!!!

  • Someloser

I want to agree with you Jukai, but Rondo’s game is ugly as hell and Carter has to pay for all the other ASG where he didn’t deserve it but got it anyway. Anyway, I’m not voting Iverson in, but it’s not like we’re barring any awesome player out there.

  • http://www.slamonline.com nemoemon

The NBA is all politics with people voting for Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson in the all stars. U guys r dumbasses

  • Justin

^^^Politics? Uhhh..the NBA executives don’t vote them in. They have no say over what the fans vote and unfortunately I think it’s time to take the vote away from the fans. This year is a prime example.

Jukai, guard heavy all star games make them more fun to watch. When a bunch of people can rebound and get the ball going up the floor it’s much more fun. Remember the game that had Jordan, Penny, Pippen, and Grant Hill (’97 I think)? Every one of them could rebound and get down the floor in hurry and it led to a big comeback from a bunch of fast breaks. One of the better All Star games because of it

  • Turbo Uno

Guard heavey All Star Games are the way to go! Who wants to watch the taller players try goofy/awkward dribbling moves? lol.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Sometimes the best plays are when the taller players try goofy/awkward dribbling moves. But I see your guys point. I’d accept Ellis over Boozer.
Rondo’s game is ugly, and his two free throws did miss him the game for the Clippers, but the all-star game is about rewarding good players… not pretty players! Unfortunately, there is no more deserving point guard in the east than him. Honestly.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Also, Jordan/Pippen/Hill/Penny are all 6’7+. That’s not a small lineup. Not by a longshot!

  • DMC14

yeah right bynum or gasol get the start over amare at all star weekend (gasol is good dont get me wrong). keep dreaming buddy.

  • DMC14

    Mitch Richmond.

  • DMC14

    Q Rich can rebound.

  • http://www.inbox.lv smiles

the all star voting just needs to be changed in letting coaches not only pick the additional players, but also switch some 2 or 3 players that are voted in which they think don’t deserve the nod and give their idea of replacement, which of course can’t be their own team players, this will solve the iversons and mcgradies of the league and give a chance for ballers like dwill

  • http://slamonline.com NUPE

I’m all for AI and T-Mac starting if that’s what the fans want. The ASG is about the ‘stars’, not necessarily the ‘best’ players. Both AI and Tmac have earned the ‘stardom’ over the course of careers and there is nothing wrong with fans recognizing and honoring that. Although under dif circumstances, fans did that with Magic after he retired. For a matter of fact, if magic or MJ were to be on the ballot this year, I’d vote for both of them. Rose, D-will and other’s may have to wait a bit to make the squad or to start, but once they establish themselves over a few seasons, they’ll get the nod from the fans. My biggest surprise so far is how few votes Shaq is getting. Not that I think he’s playing better than Dwight, I just thought his star was bigger than what it’s proving to be by the fans.

  • mdshuai33

The ASG is about the fans, which sometimes means that the starter voting becomes a sort of life-time acheivement award at times

  • derrick

ivey in the all star game period would be a travesty.
    ivey only cares about ivey. i-vey i-vey i-vey i-vey i-vey……..

  • http://www.inbox.lv smiles

Both inverson and mcgrady have played I don’t know some 50 minutes combined. it has never been this fractured in terms of voting “my favourite players” which are one dimensional whiners biaching about starting or often injured pussees crying for not playing enough while coming back from another microfracture and then talking about how important it is to win at this stage of their ringless careers
I ain’t even seen them play this season neither do these voters, wtf

  • str8 from samoa

AI will get that starting spot. enough said.

  • Turbo Uno

Looking at today’s stats from the Sixers v.s. Blazers game…..Iverson went 7 for 11 with 19 points and the sixers got the win. Not bad for someone who just returned from a bad knee injury and is supposed to be “done” in the NBA.
