Dwight Could Be Done With Dunk Contests

Dwight didn’t say he’s definitely no longer competing in the showcase, but he doesn’t sound too thrilled about the prospect: “Dwight Howard said this afternoon that he’s not keen on participating in February’s all-star slam-dunk contest. But he also left the door open for a change of heart. When asked Thursday whether he would compete in the event, the 23-year-old superstar didn’t sound enthused. ‘I’m getting old, man,’ Howard said. ‘They’ve got to stop grabbing me in the games so I can jump. I’ve got to keep my legs. It’s kind of tough. I don’t know. I’ve thought about it. But I think it’s time for us to see more guys get out there and show their stuff. Half the time, you can’t really show everything you’ve got in the dunk contest anyways. I would love to see a lot of people in it.’ But, then, he took a look at a nearby video camera and kept his options open. ‘If they want me in it, they ought to vote me in,’ he said. ‘Vote me. Vote for me.”‘

  • james

dwights overrated once he hits 30 stats going DOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN like jermaine oneal status lol lol lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/kevinwilson16 Kevin Wilson

He’d probably be happy to defend the title he would have won if he hadn’t helped Nate Robinson win it by being a prop.

  • Hoodsnake

Well he won the last layup contest maybe he can work on his free throws on all-star saturday

  • LA Huey

Whatever happens, please no more NateDogg. Judges robbed Iggy and Dwight on his account.

  • Juanny

    DeMar DeRozen

  • God Shamgod

Megastars don’t like to do this here is an idea of a few I have.

    Demar Derozen
    Josh Smith
Black Griffin (If Healthy) 6’10 with a 40 in vert.

Dwight howard is one of the most over rated players the L.
    his stats are awesome.agree
his body and strength and blah blah blah.10/10
his team.10/10 again..(Jameer GET WELL SOON)
wtf has he done with all this.miss free throws at crucial moments.get ridiculed by Gasol.lose a shot at the chip.
    what more?
lets face it if dwight howard picks up even 60 % of EWINGS game.he is going to have a stat sheet like
On 60% shooting and 75 % from the line.
sky’s the limit for this guy.
strength and a great physique against weak opponents.getting abused by the better teams in the L.
    not his bread and butter.
make the man feel proud.wear those rings ewing couldn’t wear because of god in the body of a basketballer.jumpman 23.

This seems like a veiled attempt to 1) bitch about the non-calls and 2) fish for some adulation. I don’t care if he does it this year, does anyone else?

  • Shem

LeBron, Josh Smith, Demar DeRozan and Desmond Mason would be nice

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

  • Brian

Shannon Brown, Trevor Ariza, Andre Iguodala, and Josh Smith would be an excellent dunk contest.

  • Sarah

He should at least take this year off. Otherwise people take his participation for granted. Make room for some new talent for a while.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Dwight wanted more time to spend setting illegal screens.

  • Young Lebron 23

Anybody can be in the dunk contest this year except for kryptonate. I’m tired of him

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@niQ screw Nate Dogg. He’s already won two, and not one of those performances comes to close to actually deserving a solitary title. Basically, he won both years because he’s tiny and got mad hops… Impressive? Yes. Worthy of praise? Yes. Worthy of a prestigous dunk title? Hella no

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

360vue. I mentioned him ONLY cause he won last year, meaning he’ll automatically be in it, no? If I could I’d switch him in the list with DEMAR DEROZAN!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Why so much h@te for Nate? His dunks were awesome last year. The trampoline off Wilson Chandler’s back was one of the coolest dunks ever.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

LeBron’s joining the dunk contest now??????? Who does he think he is?!

  • http://www.slamonline.com B-zog

Melo he is a high flyer. MVP MVP MVP MVP!

  • JD

U are 23 and you’re calling yourself old?

  • underdog

D-12 has already wrote himself into the history books, with winning a dunk contest with a layup. So I won’t miss him.

  • Nawlins Realest.

i know…..im 23, im NOT getting old…what is this guy talkin about.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@niQ fair point but I thought they choose each year, it’s not set in stone is that the champ always comes back is it? I ain’t got know clue on that. I’d second DeRozan from what the highlights i’ve seen from USC… barely seen much this year aside from a couple of putbacks and that sick flyer against Chi

@Teddy I don’t like how he “won” ’06, that was a farce! And yes that Chandler dunk was cool, but it was early on, and one interesting dunk a champion does not make. The rest were all standard slams, even the Dwight leap, it’s just a case of mad hops which is enviable and worthy of credit but surely not the title. Aside from the Dwight leap and his change into crazy green sneakers I felt no excitement watching him (changing into a ‘Kryptonate’ all green kit isn’t really pushing the boundaries of creativity). It’s all subjective obviously, but isn’t excitement and creativity what the contest is about? Almost everyone in the world can only dream they had hops like that, I know I wish I did lol, but we’ve seen the stuff he did in the numerous contests in the L already and if it he wasn’t so small it would have long ago been tedious for everyone. We’ve long known he’s got crazy mad hops but is that and some unrelated dancing and shoes what deserves a title? In my view, no.

  • Yesse

Well i think this is a good idea.I think he ran out of ideas anyway.Shannon Brown, LeBron James (he says he is having second thoughts about participating) and 2 other new guys would be cool.If Nate could show something unseen i would like to see him. Also i was sad, because Joe Alexander didnt get voted in last year.

  • L

Shannon Brown, Will Bynum, Demar Derozan and Lebron, he’s got to be there just like Mike and kobe did in the past..L

  • thalilbigkahuna

Whatever happens, Shannon Brown needs to be in it this year. I’d like to see Igoudala agian as well.

  • http://www.euroleagueadventures.com Nick Gibson

    Shannon Brown
    Gerald Henderson
    Demar DeRozan
LeBron (if he doesn’t cop out…which I fully expect)
    Alternate: Iguodala

  • str8 from samoa

nate will steal it again ha!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dave

Want proof there’s no justice in the world? Dwight Howard has a dunk trophy and Shawn Kemp shops at Wal-Mart.

  • ab_40

I wonder if the nba dunk contest isn’t gonna be overshadowed by the sprite dunk ocntest with street ballers. because well most of those guys are just plain and simple better. Allthough I think some of the guys will have problems on a basket that is realy 10 feet

  • Hangtime Hec

That brings a tears to my eye dave.

  • Hangtime Hec

Freaken Typos. I have a theory, some great players, arent great players.? I mean how long has Dwight been under the tutelage of Ewing and still not a dominant force in the block?

  • Hangtime Hec

Wow this keyboard is killing me. I meant that some great players arent great teachers*******

  • a_whiteman

my friend jus fly darlington will win the sprite dunk contest look him up on youtube, he dunks with team flight brothers CRAZY dunker, 360 under BOTH legs he would eat all nba players alive in a dunk off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Shem

I think by old he means his material, he’s done absolutely everything. Higher rims, capes, free throw line windmills, blowing out candles, putting stickers on the backboard hes very creative and it must be hard to come up with this for what 2 years in a row

  • The Commercial

Attention wh*re. Always has been. How do you go, in the same effin’ conversation, from “I’m getting old…I think it’s time for us to see more guys get out there and show their stuff” to “Vote me. Vote for me.”? He’s always in front of the camera, always with his shirt off, always doing stupid sh*t for the crowd. He’s a monster, but dude is overrated.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dave

@Shem – free throw windmills and candles? No.

  • ENDS

the Kid is 23 ZI bet if you were popular too u’d do the same thing. Plus too all the haters and the lay-up contraversy he made other spectacular dunk that night including the tap back dunk never before seen

  • Dallas Coronado

Team flight brothers have mad ups, it’s just insane.

  • mr clutch

tall guys are boring to watch in the dunk contest anyway ,

  • j.b

i dunno, i think it would like rodney carney to be in it someday. and i do think the nba should add players from outside, like mr 720 or james white. that mf just did a between the legs from the ffin ftline in contest in china or something, check youtube..

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@Hangtime, your theory is right; no doubt some great players ain’t teachers. It’s a different ball game, no pun intended. They can and probably will make the greatest teachers if they can teach but unless you’re a natural that takes almost a long time to master, and some never will. But learning from a teacher is also a two way process, the student needs to be up to it as well. Dwight is a mystery to me, considering his lack of progress, if you can call it that, I suspect he’s happy with what’s he got.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan2.0

Shannon, Demar derozen, nick young, and if lebron wants to join i guesss him… but if u ask me, lebron is actin like a sissy about this whole contest. his creativity isnt that good either

  • kwame

    Bron Bron, Wade, Derozan, Shanon?

  • Lee

    Hakim Warrick?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dave

Forget Jordan’s number, I’d pay to see the NBA officially retire the East Bay Funk Dunk. Seriously, I don’t need to see that anymore, I don’t care if it’s from the three point line, backwards and upside down. It’s BORING.
And where the hell is the Goat’s Double Dunk? Why hasn’t a TFB put one of those down if they’re so damn hot?

  • Shem

@Dave- You’re right. He only jumped from the free throw line I don’t know why I remembered him as doing a windmill and it was Gerald Green that blew out the candle. Sorry about that

  • gogo

I predicted LeBron would wuss out when he announced he was gonna participate last season. He’s afraid that he’s gonna get friggin’ destroyed by Shanwow.

  • Justin

@rushmelo: hahahaha Yeah, learn from Ewing. Make predictions that never come true. Lose in every must-win situation. Face the basket and shoot from the outside instead of using your power inside. Travel everytime you’re in the post, although you do have to go to Georgetown to learn how to do that. ‘Zo and Dikembe will back me up on that one. Dwight’s only 23 years old, he’s only going to get bigger and stronger. His biggest problem is whining to the refs for every call.

  • tmw

hes like 6’11 he could dunk til hes 50 and he dunked on a 12 foot hoop. whats wrong with his legs?

  • KH10

Nash, Boykins, Deiner and Brad Miller, first one to dunk it wins!

  • gayallah

Boys- please stay away from my g/friend. Inshalah. Or else its satans bottom for you? Ha the revolution is like time with golden dreams intact.
