Maynor and Harpring Traded to Thunder

In a cost-slashing move, Utah traded away their rookie point guard and Harpring’s rotting corpse for some German fellow no one has ever heard of: “The Jazz on Tuesday traded rookie point guard Eric Maynor and veteran forward Matt Harpring’s expiring contract to Oklahoma City for the rights to a forward from Germany who has never played in the NBA. The cost-cutting trade will save more than $10 million for the Jazz, who are well in excess of the NBA’s team payroll salary cap and luxury-tax threshold. ‘It’s good for Oklahoma City, because they get a good young player (in Maynor),’ Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said today. ‘And it’s good for us, because it allows us to address our financial situation. Basically the reason we did that was to relieve ourselves of some luxury-tax responsibilities … and to do that we had to give up an asset,’ he added. ‘It was a difficult decision. We’re disappointed that we had to do that, but in these economic times we saved a great deal of money and we’re able to be aggressive, still, going forward.’ The trade — essentially a salary dump of Harpring’s burdensome contract, at the cost of 22-year-old Maynor — reduces Utah’s roster count from 14 to 12.”

I hope this doesn’t impact Shaun’s chances as backup PG.

eh, i am from germany, but who the F is peter fehse?!?

Ken: Shaun got released. How’s that for an impact.

  • tavoris

@Ken, Livingston will lose some minutes (as Maynor is good), but he can play the 1-3, so he’ll still have a place in their rotation.

I’m pretty excited about Maynor joining the Thunder. They just keep building on that young core. And here’s hoping Livingston can join a new team soon.

  • Alphonso Ford

Livingston AND Wilks released, lots of faith in Maynor and so they should

  • riggs

cot dammit when will shaun catch a damn break (no pun intended at all)

I don’t get how this trade happens? I thought all NBA trades had to be dollar-for-dollar trades or that they had to be close to matching up??

  • Alphonso Ford

^Thunder had a ton of cap room

@ TAD, i was thinking the same thing. Maynor doesn’t make very much. But Harpring’s is a pretty big contract. They included a second round pick in teh trade. Does a draft pick also count in the salary matching equation? Does it stand for a certain amount? I guess Harpring comes with some kind of exception because he’s not injured or else this trade doesn’t work. Anybody?

Maynor was playing GREAT! Oklahoma is on the verge of something special…. My only concern is all the Kids on the roster w/ no real proven vet… Talent and youth can only take you so far… evident in the loss to L.A. the othernight… they are VERY close to something special… Utah is hoping the Knicks tank so this year’s Maynor will turn into next years John Wall!

  • Hussman25

Also: Shaun Livingston needs to play and get minutes to show the League his leg is completely healed! I think no one trust that leg anymore… He should not give up on playing in the L; but sitting is not helping… He needs to go to Europe a few yrs, show teams he’s healthy and come back in a couple yrs… That or Str8 D-League… Shauns too good for that tho. (not personality wise, talent wise…)

Why would the Knicks tank if they have no first round picks. John Wall will not end up in Utah via the Knicks. Believe that.

What? I don’t really understand this for Utah. Ok, I understand it’s for financial reasons, but who’s going to back Deron up when he’s injured? Maynor was a great fill-in when Deron was down. I just see this as a better move for OKC. Maynor has played well when given minutes, I never saw Russell Westbrook has a true point guard so hopefully they can play Maynor and Westbrook together when resting others. But then again, there’s Harden who needs more playing time.. hmm. Ok I don’t know

  • Hussman25

@Hisham: The Knicks First round pick is contingent on if they have a top 5 pick (as u should know) which would turn into Utah’s… U better hope The Knicks dont tank it (They better play their @zzes off!)… If Utah is cost cutting now and lets just say the Knicks do have to send the pick to Utah… Imagine a sign and trade w/ Carlos Boozer and their pick 5,4,3, etc.. to move up to try and take Wall… (That is just hypothetical) The Pingpong balls will have the final say sir… All Im sayin

  • Alphonso Ford

“Oklahoma City was able to absorb Harpring’s and Maynor’s salaries without sending any back to Utah because the Thunder had enough room under the NBA’s salary cap to do so.” It’s in the article..

Thanks Alphonso. I guess I should have actually read the article. I like Maynor alot and I hope he succeeds. All the Thunder need now is a big man.

  • nicko

    Trade for SHAQ!!!!

  • Ken

I think Maynor is a great pickup for OKC. I just feel bad Shaun is without a team again.

  • okaydutch

because OKC isn’t young enough already…

to all the shaun livingston lovers, HE SUCKS! he has no offense, no jumper, plays no defense. what can he do? handle the ball a lil. hes a scrub, yes injuries suck, but not as bad as shaun.

i think this trade puts OKC over the cap now. with that being said, they’re gonna be getting some established established to pair with durant with $14M in expiring contracts. i could see kaman or brand going to OKC. can’t grab a guy from washington apparently using etan thomas because he was traded away from the wiz this year (according to trade checker via realgm). then i read some crazy hypothetical of a westbrook for andrew bynum trade…

  • derrick

good trade for okc if harpring comes off the books this offseason. maynor is a solidplayer. okc will be
very nice next year. they are a solid big man away.

  • Kyle

Rasheed Wallace , Tony Allen for Donte Green, Omri Casspi, Brockman, 1st round 2010 draft pick??

would you do it?? (this is not real; just wanted to know if anyone would do that) :) dont hate.

  • max

@larrylegend same, i thought it might be tim ohlbrecht, ’cause he’s (at least) known in germany, but… fehse???

  • http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3357407353_c868c2d95c.jpg larrylegend

hi max, fehse was labled the next dirk back in 2002, but he’s always injured, not playing for some seasons at all. anyway, no name to remember….first i thougt it would be okulaja, but he was in PHI’s camp around 2000, not 2002.
