Gilbert Arenas on Refs: ‘They’re Profiling Me’

Another day, another conspiracy theory from Agent Zero. Ho-hum: “They made this new rule, I don’t know what it is … it’s frustrating this season. I used to average about 11 or 12 free-throws a game, now I can’t even get a call. I feel like they’re profiling me as a player. I’m creating all the contact, and I’m saying that’s what a scorer is supposed to do, they’re supposed to create the contact when they get into the lane. It’s not double-jeopardy, but if they’re outside the lane, it’s a charge. Now if they’re inside the lane and I get into them, it’s a no call. So I’m asking, ‘Where do I win at?’ Last game I got so frustrated I had to get a tech.  It’s just frustrating because I can’t play my game because I’m ‘jumping into everybody.’ If two refs say it, that’s fine. But if every ref says it to me, that means before the game you’re consciously thinking, ‘When he goes to the lane, we can’t call it because they’re jumping straight up.’”

    Is “double-jeopardy” the new “crab dribble”? I’ve never heard it used in basketball terms. Is it when the refs call penalize you for two personal fouls on the same play?

    when you’re hurt for the better part of two seasons and you’re trying to feel your way back, you don’t get superstar calls. superstars get superstar calls. you’re not a superstar anymore, gilbert.

    if a player jumps straight up with hands straight its no call gilbert does have a point but some times he relies on that to get a call he has a great outside game and mid range as well USE IT

    Nba ref’s havn’t mistaken him for lebron james. So there’s no way he’s gonna get 11-12 free throws.

    Gilbert creates contact the same way Chauncey Billups creates contact.
    Billups is just better at it.

    I’ve noticed it too. Arenas always thinks he’s a victim but it’s actually league-wide. LeBron is not getting those calls anymore where he is just creating contact with a defender that’s jumping straight up. Remember the last play of the Bulls game a couple of weeks ago? Chris Bosh tried to take it to Haywood too this week and the refs were not having it. I think it’s a good thing, I don’t like wings getting bailed out when they throw up shots that have no chance of going in. The superstars will adjust.

    Billups is another topic. He creates contact on jumpers. When the defender bites on your pumpfake, he’s never really jumping straight up. I feel that those are earned free throws since the guy with the ball fooled the defender.

    Welcome to Rodney Stuckey’s world. Sure, he’s not a marquee name, but he gets smashed every time he goes to the rim (which is a lot) and hardly ever gets the call.

    Watch Billups on the rare occasions where he drives. Making the shot in an afterthought. When he goes to the rim most times he’s looking to find somebody to bump into to get a foul call.
    But, I agree with you that I’m glad the league is cutting down on these fouls. It had gotten ridiculous.

    2nd Garrett’s post. I watch every pistons game and you just have to come to terms with the fact that Stucky is going to get about 1/3 the calls he deserves, but that’s life. So move on Gil, your not the only player dealing with this.

    @allen p your dead right abut billups its contact creating should be a rating in nba 2k..he drives you foul even if you didnt !…it is almost like you have no option but to hope the shot doesnt drop because either hes def going to the line..!

    Paul Pierce is peerless when it comes to creating contact/drawing silly fouls all game long. If you watch him a lot on the perimeter, on his pick and rolls, he’ll run into the defending big’s leg and throw his head back and his body will spasm and quickly look over to the ref to see if he got the call. saw him dive to the floor last night after Ginobili cleanly stole the ball from him and started arguing with the refs that he was pushed in the back. I love his clutch game but i hate his flopping. Leave it for Verajao and The Machine. VC does it too; just not as often and as well as PP. Billups loves those side pick and rolls where the big has to show and push him towards the sideline and he’ll just crash into his legs and get the automatic call. He does it every time when the quarter’s ending and the other team is over the foul limit. 2 easy points for him.

    Players should have to WORK for their free throws. Players not getting cheap@ss touch fouls is GOOD for the league. These stars need to stop whining about foul calls and just play the d@mn game. The only two players in the league who need to complain about calls are Dwight Howard and Yao Ming (when playing).
    Also, Chris Bosh gets a tonne of free throws by WORKING and banging inside. Don’t whine to the refs and blame them for everything–they already cater to the stars too much.

    Other then Dwayne Wade, Paul Pierce is the most reliable guy to get to the line night in night out. Hes been doing it for many years and holds the playoff record with I think 21 attempts?

    You gotta be kidding homie, Lebron’s ft average during the eastern conf finals were set to be on an alltime record cept for the elimination game where he didn’t get as much. dwayne wades 18 ft during the finals were the alltime match so far. Lebron will get the record this playoffs, the reg season is nothing compared to how the ref’s will will this kid to the chip.
