No Longer Just a Report, Iverson Reuniting With Sixers

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Following the 11th hour collapse of negotiations between Allen Iverson and the New York Knicks two weeks ago, it’s important to tread carefully when it comes to this story. There are no guarantees.

According to ESPN, however, talks between A.I. and his former team went really well yesterday in Dallas, and the Sixers could have Iverson back in uniform next week against the Nuggets in Philly.

And what a scene that would be:

Two sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Sixers are indeed targeting Monday’s home game against the Denver Nuggets — another of Iverson’s former teams — if they go forward with what appears to be a growing intent to bring back their controversial franchise icon.

One source said that the team has already made tentative plans to send assistant coach and former Iverson teammate Aaron McKie home from the Sixers’ current road trip to meet Iverson in Philadelphia later this week and work him out to ensure Iverson’s readiness for the Denver game. The Sixers play Thursday in Oklahoma City and Saturday in Charlotte before returning to Philadelphia … “No doubt he’s coming back,” one source said.

As for the current Sixers, how would they feel about Iverson rejoining the squad? For the most part, they seem to be for it. Lou Williams is excited about the possibility, and Samuel Dalembert has already visualized it in his dreams.

As always, stay tuned.

UPDATE: It’s a done deal. Allen Iverson has accepted Philly’s one-year, non-guaranteed offer. Team president Ed Stefanski had this to say: “In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time.”

As Allen Iverson wrote this morning on Twitter: “Back to Philly where it all started!”

    FIRST!!!

I am loving it!!! AI welcome back you are always philly’s homeboy!

  • underdog

Wonder if AI’s second coming in Philly will be longer than his first in Memphis. And who’s gonna start when Lou Williams is back? Good luck Eddie Jordan.

Well, and Samuel Dalember should visualize in his dreams how NOT to goaltend his own teammate possible game winning three pointer…

  • Felix

I hope they aren’t going to sit him behind Jrue… his head might blow up like the dude in Big Trouble in Little China

  • German Reignman

Man, they should send Aaron McKie home to work out himself and play McKie instead of AI

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Well don’t muck it up this time, Allen. Adopting Gil’s early season attitude (surly, media shy) might be the way to go for now. (i predict this post getting the most comments of the last few days on slamonline. Wonder where Spanny is?)

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

and this is how it was meant to be… i knew it

  • Illydiva

    @underdog…cosign.

  • solito

Best scenario for AI. He can save face, by starting half the season, and then become a “mentor” for the new breed… Not sure how well it all will end, but still I am a fan, how can you not?

  • JoeMaMa

    I’m just loving the ride.

  • erich

Hopefully he looses his ego somewhere on the trip to Philly .
    But I don’t think so .

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

This is gonna help them tremendously. They have no one who can create in the halfcourt.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

On paper a roster that has iverson as lead guard, elton brand as the post option dre as the sidekick and sam and thad as role players , with lou williams as a sixth man looks like a playoff team for sure.

  • http://www.nba.com Light

    Omg all the memories! (Remembers)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

should i pick him up over eric gordon in fantasy waivers?

  • clockwork

    Oh hell yeah!!!

  • you already know.

Iverson shouldn’t never left philly in the 1s place that his reget. i hope he go to work in philly again.

  • riggs

that wasnt wayno who posted before that was me.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

Whens the Nugs were tipped as his first game last friday it seemed too poignant to be true. At least AI is going to be back in the game, I’d personally sack EJ to sort out this slide, although I can’t imagine who’d want to take over.

@Bryan, co sign. But really, any decent true point and that team is top 6 eastern easily. Lou is still young but after 5yrs he looks like he is in the Jason Terry, Leandro Barbosa 6th man potent scorer mould not an operator or facilitator.

  • Foobar

    YES!!

  • Papou

    Woot! I LIKES!!!

  • Taisen

but what about Jrue Holiday ? why isn’t he playing more minutes? does he suck ?

  • LA Huey

Even with AI, they’re nothing more than first round fodder.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

wORRRRDDDDD. And for the first few posts, there are reports saying Eddie Jordan was planning on playing Lou and Jrue together anyways, and based on how bad Jrue’s been playing, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to play Lou and AI together. right?

  • tavoris

@Taisen-Jrue is struggling with the offense, just like every PG does in EJ’s system at first.

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com CDef28

Thank the basketball gods that this is going to happen.

  • SLAM’sFAN

    that’s what i’m talking about!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Seems like the best (only) move for AI to make…drama is really starting to be a BIG part of his M.O. lately. That whole retiring publicity stunt is sickening.

  • Baguma

i am a retail seller in africa and i sold a lot of sixers 3 jerseys during his days in philly. seems like business will be good this christmas.

  • Nigel

Whether good or bad, it’s gonna be a hell on a ride for my Sixers the next few months.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@Taisen, EJ seems to dislike rookies, he did in Wash and he does now. Jrue is playin more mins since Lou’s injury but he was more effective in less mins when he was doin his own thing. He doesn’t suck at all though, aside from some poor decision (which will improve anyway) his only flaw seems to be that he is just inconsistent like most young guns

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Him and Vick can hit up plenty of strip clubs in South Philly.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    TAD ftw!

  • ORANGEMAN73

I was not a big Iverson Fan, but it is nice to see him back were his career started. He always looked out of place with the other Teams. Thanks Philly for taking him back. Philly will be back in the NBA playoffs.

  • heartlandG

Dayum should I get a jersey??? Naaaaaw

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/pennyccw og

I’m sure Glad Coach Thompson & Coach Brown decided to talk Ai outta retirement…This is much better than NY

  • Illydiva

Just checked the schedule, and this would be Sixers vs Nuggets. Interesting…. Now I’m glad I bought those season tix; but I don’t usually go to Monday nite games. I might make an exception for AI’s homecoming.

  • Phila

Good news, welcome back to Philly AI. We need you back in our city.

  • Cizzo

i can see things working out for A.I. back ih Philly they do need a all out scorer he can do that, they’re defense is there, still a few ??? to be answered!

  • Yassi

    way to go

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

On paper, this is a great friggin’ team! Holiday, Iverson, Iggy, Brand/Thad, and Sammy starting… you bring great firepower off the bench with Lou and Thad/Brand with Smith providing relief defense and Kapono getting the spots for Iverson’s kickouts? Damn!

  • Earl

Do I smell another Maxamillion711 mix?

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

I’m calling 50 wins. Seriously, this is a better team than what he had with the Nuggets. If Elton Brand was Elton Brand this year, I’d consider the rivals-2001 team-bomb, but he’s not. Still yet, I’m excited. If they play Cleveland in the playoffs, we might see an upset.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

50 what? Philly’s currently 5-13. They play at Charlotte and at OKC — both tough games — before AI joins them on Monday. Let’s say they split those. That means they’d have to go 44-18 the rest of the way. I don’t see it.

@Darksaber….:celebrating a great Sunday night when we destroyed the European champs (Panathinaikos) behind Papaloukas amazing performance!!!!

  • ciroqobama

50 wins?! Close the comments that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. AI is a bum now.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

50 wins is sort of out of the question with the record the team has– but I say second round playoff appearance is now in the realm of possibility.

I was having a great time last week with my kids crying “goodbye” to the shoeseller,..how naive can someone be in order to believe that the ” Kournikova of basketball” would ever leave the chance for a couple more dollars…THE KID SIGNED WITH MEMPHIS (after Michael Heisley’s comments):W-A-K-E U-P!!!!.It can do A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G for money….unfortunatelly i couldn’t find any serious b*tting company giving me a good b*t for this thing but it would have been the easiest money i ever made…..i was thinking with a couple of friends offering him 50000$ to come and play for a division 2 Romanian team (semi-professional).I am sure he would have considered it .if the legendary Pippen did it a couple of years ago, why not a future nobody like our cute “Anna”….???

I wouldn’t go so far as to predict the playoffs for these guys. It’s not a video game. But they’re definitely a group that could go all the way or bottom out fast. It will be mucho fun to watch what happens. And despite all my criticism of AI, I have maintained that I think the guy can still play at a high level. I hope he finishes out his career in Philly with minimal drama, many points, and a jersey retirement ceremony at the end of it all.

RESPECT for Josh Childress who, although he lost his father last Thursday, he choosed to stay in Greece and help us beat our big rival Panathinaikos. He dedicated our big win to his late father crying after the game while Papaloukas, Vasilopoulos,Schortsianitis and everybody else thanked him for his determination.GO OLYMPIAKOS!!!!!The best thing with Kournikova signing with the 76er’s??? Alright don’t bash JE, it is nice to hear someone think Philly have 50 wins in them lol. I’d say it’s not going to near 50 wins because (aside from Jordan being a tool) it is too much of an experiment to really say how it is going to go. But saying the record we have now is evidence for 50 wins being silly isn’t really fair, albeit may sound logical. A couple of years back we were almost sunk by February AS break, then afterwards for no reason except changing style of play, we vastly improved. If those 35 or whatever games post-AS were the season, we would have been top of the L, if it wasn’t for a 3 game skid or whatever in the last couple of games when playoffs were guaranteed. We finished by falling into 7th with a .500ish record. My point, there aren’t too many things you should write off in the NBA season, or in most sports.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

@boy sanchez….:”stazei piperi i mavri p…. tou Berry,….” tihs is an old one, i don’t know if you were around at that moment but the Iraklis team with Berry and Yuri Zdovts(1995 if i remember correct) was something special!!!!

  • Ronald

@MJG…wow! you obviously have NO idea who played for the sixers before iverson came along.

  • tavoris

@Allenp, I don’t think he likes girls. His affection seems to be for overweight, vertically-challenged, Eastern-European men.

  • boy sanchez

@Dimitris…: At that time I was just 5 years old so, unfortunately, I don’t know Berry. But from what you say it must have been something special! But I can still remember when Dimitris Diamantidis, Sofoklis Schortsianitis, Nikos Hatzivretas and (traitor) Papadopoulos played for us!

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

@boy…..: it IS the best team Iraklis ever had, with Kakiousis running the point and Zdovts ,Berry and Pit Papahronis(a cult figure) as center!!!! They fininshed the first round of the championship on top but the could not hold on till the end….Berry finished the year averaging 30 points and over 13 rebounds ,he was simply unstopable, next year he came to OSFP…i remember the game the won against Panathinaikos at Ivanofeio…KOLASI!!!!

  • Rodney Sansbury

We all know that AI started off as a franchise player and could have truly been one…….BUT, In order to be a franchise player in the league you must have discipline integrity and work ethic. Unless his attitude in general changes, he will be a disgruntled player once again. Don’t get me wrong I like AI but he’s just not the “Doctor”. Sometimes a little cooth can go a long way.

Or follow the league over the last two years? At all? But hey, they’ll sell more jerseys so who cares! We’re talkin’ about a career quitter here, not a winner, a career quitter… not, not, not a winner, we’re talkin’ about a career quitter.

  • tavoris

@Michael NZ. You’re wrong. period. your comment about the last two years kinda-sorta ignore the 11 before that. Or (as Lang pointed out)the fact that while the other members of the infamous ’04 Olympic team cowered and hid, Iverson was one of the only people who stood up and did media. Hardly a quitter. But we’re not talking about Lebron, Wade, Anthony, Duncan, Odom, Boozer, Stoudemire, or Marbury, are we?

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Michael NZ: I love to disagree with Tavoris and Allenp on everything they believe about Iverson… but they’re right and you’re ridiculously in the wrong, buddy. Phili has had trouble scoring in the clutch and closing out games. They have no team leadership. Most of their players work without the ball. Why is Iverson a bad fit? Why is a second round playoff appearance impossible?
Why do you keep sighing? Do you have some breathing problem or something?

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

That being said, if they can’t make the playoffs, even with their record, well, I dunno what to say about Iverson.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

What does scoring and crossing people over have to do with AI not being a quitter?! I think it’s good that he’s in Phila, and I hope he does well there, but I have to agree. The guy has the attitude of a quitter. Career quitter: Someone who says “I’m taking my ball and going home!” over the course of a career. Therefore, Iverson = Career Quitter.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tripledouble TripleDouble

A career quitter?? You call playing the way he played quitting??… C’mon man. When respected as an important part of a team, he NEVER quit. When he felt slighted and/or decieved, he called a spade a spade and walked… He does it his way for sure, but he ain’t no quitter man. You call it quitting, he calls it being true to himself… He’s made mistakes for sure but leaving Memphis wasn’t one of them.

I wish Mr.Iverson all the best. I really hope this happens and is hella successful for Philly.

  • tavoris

doyouwantmore-is Larry Brown a quitter? Phil Jackson? How about ANY other player who retires (while still under contract) with gas left in their tank? Are they quitters too? If so, then “career quitter” would include 2/3 of the HOF.

  • http://showmeyourwits.blogspot.com Showmeyourwits

Dude, Iverson is a career 41 mpg player, 45 in the playoffs. He might have a big ego but he has an even bigger heart. When it’s game time, he will never quit. History has proven that.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

I also think that allen iverson is the biggest whine ass ever!!! Remember everyone? AI said he had problems at home to deal with after coming off the bench for memphis. All the sudden Philly offers him a deal and his problems at home went away.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    Yes!

  • tavoris

will somebody please tell Jacob that press releases (about a players absence) made by NBA teams are true about 40% of the time? It’s called we’re not gonna tell season tix holers we sent his ass home.

  • Robb

Big heart? yes, but his ego is even bigger, that’s why he will retire empty handed. The man never had the intelligence to realize what it took to be part of a championship team. He always played for himself. His numbers are great, so what? If you aren’t a team player in a team sport you are worthless.

  • tavoris

Robb, u don’t get it. His prblem isn’t sacrificing. His problem was not running to the best team 2 try to get a title (like Shaq has done FOUR TIMES). He wants-& has wanted-to build a contender. This is echoed in everything he’s said in the past 2 years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Yes. Please let this happened and i hope AI accepts the offer today before Louis Williams scores 55 in the next game and then we have another back court issue. Monday vs Denver and then Wedensday vs Detroit wow the Iorny. Lets just hope this deal goes through and AI gets his chance to prove em wrong

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

  • wassup

@DIMITRIS im not questioning the mans skills or his heart when he plays the game, im just sayin no one can deny he’s a whiny bit**… constantly talkin about what he once was and how he shouldn’t be comin off the bench… you would think these guys would be happy just to be in the NBA takin home a couple million.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

A couple of million doesn’t mean the man shouldn’t stand for what he believes. That’s just BS.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you would have said “recent quitter” I wouldn’t have argued since those are the facts. He quit in Memphis, and it’s debatable whether he quit in Detroit, but it’s looking quite possible.

If Iverson signs with the 76ers, they are a playoff team. Maybe not a high seeded one but I do think this is the perfect fit. He can start at pg for now if not permanently and if the 76ers want to play small ball they can move iggy to the 3 and put iverson at the 2. I m positive they would play him in the clutch and he’d get 30 mins perfect fit! Everyone just remember the Kid in him. Remember the Crossovers on Jordan and Lue, Remember the put back slams over entire teams. Remember the clutch shots and the way he danced around the Lakers. Now of course he s getting old but he can still do it for a team that desperately needs scoring. I saw flashes of it in Memphis and im very excited to watch him play

@Gaber…..:i didn’t watch that game although i knew what was coming….i watched the big game on Sunday though against Panathinaikos. Having so many NBA players is making our team predictably vulnerable when the game gets serious and the defences suffocating. Wafer is already witnessing games from the stands, he ain’t fined or on probation, he is simply unable to grasp the European game (no mistakes, 100% concentration at every possesion, complicated offensive schemes etc.). I had said since the beggining that there are 3 levels of teams this year in Europe , first Panathinaikos and Barcelona, then Olympiakos and Real Madrid, and then Siena, CSKA. I don’t see anybody else except this 6 teams making it to the final-4. Actually the first 2 teams along with Real are almost locks. This leaves a spot open that i hope we are going to get basically because we got some players that are extremely talented for the European level. On paper (something like fantasy ball that my kids here love) Olympiakos has the most talented team (along with Panathinaikos) in Europe. My prediction for this year winner is one of the 2 top teams, Panathinaikos and Barcelona. Since the (Spanish)organisers don’t like the idea of Greek teams dominating the European game.I can agree with them business wise, Greece is a small country and the market is already saturated since everybody in Greece is crazy about basketball(we got the country with the most people playing organised bball in the world by a wide margin, always talking as a percentage of the total population) .I don’t agree with them trying to do what they attempted in last years Euroleague final and many times in the past. Anyway, it will propably be either Panathinaikos(again…)or Barcelona. You are not correct that Olympiakos has many NBA players, we just have 2 big names(JOsh and WAFER) and the rest of the team is full with the cream of world basketball(Papaloukas,Vasilopoulos,Schortsianitis, Kleiza, Bourousis, Teodosic).

Hey Spanny, nobody cares about your Euroleague bullsh*t.

  • peter

A bit more enthusiasm from Stefanski perhaps? Obviously there is trepidation due to recent events but come on, the guy is a Philadelphia legend, greatest Sixer or all time…could have at least made mention of that rather than talking about him like he was just another guard on the pile.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Despite AI’s disgusting retirement publicity stunt, this is probably the best situation for him. He’s back where the fans love him and he can be the guy again…I wonder how Iggy will take this.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ DIMITRIS DIAMANTIDIS

@Wayno….:Iggy does not exist(although i really love his dunking).

  • http://Www.lollercoasters.com Dr. West

This is detrimental to Iggy’s development, although he’s definitely not suited to be “The Man”, he’s more than capable of being a 2nd banana.

  • slawson

It seems a fitting way to end his career. I think he realizes this is probably the last stop on the train for him.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

Woah wayno… bit of a steep indictment of AI’s retirement letter; ‘disgusting… publicity stunt’?!? The 6ers contract only arose because since then we’d lost another 3games and the only player who can cope consistently with more than 20+mins at 1 is out for a couple of months. It got so much publicity because, quite simply, it’s AI. If the woeful Knicks reject you, whilst the pathetic and hapless Nets and Minny act as if you do not even exist, on top of being shunned for a currently toothless PG in Conley at Grizz, all after the career AI has had you’d probably think retirement has been forced upon you as well. Give the guy a break, no doubt he hoped he thought somebody was going to read it and think “We need to sign him up”. However, wouldn’t you if you thought you had years of top class basketball left in you?

Oh @Spanny can you give me a round up of this weeks Euroleague games and goings on? It enthralls me!

  • tavoris

    360vue, you’re right, but don’t even bother…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    YES!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear
  • Teddy-the-Bear

Wait wait WHAT? AI returning is b@d for Iguodala? Are you guys joking or what? He finally has a playmaker who can set him up; all Dre has to do is work off the ball and Iverson will find him. He’s never been a great ballhandler, and Iverson relieves him of much of the playmaking duties.
But wait, that’s going to stunt his growth? Wow. Because we all knew the Sixers were winning with Dre handling the ball a lot.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Teddy
I think that the situation you described would be very bad for Iggy. He’s at hi best when he has the ball, even if that’s not what is always best for the team.

  • tavoris

@Allenp-at least Iggy won’t have to worry about people harping on his inability to make his teammates better. He can go back to doing what he does best-playing D and finishing.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Of course AI stunts Dre’s growth – you know Iverson is just gonna hog all the practice facility time.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    ^^^ LOL.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

It’s more a question if Iggy will want somebody else on the team to be top banana. It’s an honest question, I really don’t know if he’s the kind of guy who loves being the #1 option or is cool with some pressure being taken off of him. Well 360, if you didn’t know this already, AI REALLY loves attention, so I’m thinking that was a big fat “woe is me” publicity stunt. Like I said though, this seems to be the ideal situation for him right now. They’re still a 7 or 8 seed in the East unless Brand starts ballin again. Then we MIGHT get a 5 or 6 seed out of them

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I really think that Iggy is not a first option type of talent and would benefit from AI being on that team. That being said I don’t really think AI is a first option type of talent anymore though. He’s still good, just not first option good…maybe on that team I suppose.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Real convo I had yesterday with my co-worker(who is a huge Michael Jackson fan):

Him:Man, A.I. is a punk for quiting on Memphis, I hope he never plays again. Dude is selfish.

Me:Let’s say Michael Jackson was still kicking, and the Jackson family wanted to do a reunion tour, and MJ agreed to do it. You’d buy tickets for sure, Right?

    Him:For sure!

Me:And lets say that you go and Michael does two songs and Tito headlines for the rest of the show! You’d be pissed, right? How do you think Memphis fans feel right now? Do you think MJ would do that sh!t?

    Him:Hell no.

Me:Well that’s the equivelent of Allen Iverson backing up Michael Conley.

  • tavoris

Thank you Brad…excellent comparison. Altho Conley is probably closer to Latoya than Tito.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

As for the Iggy debate: honestly, Thad Young needs to be more of a centerpiece than Iggy does. Hopefully, Eddie Jordan will open things up with AI on board and put Brand on the bench and start Thad at the 4 spot or have Brand at the 5. This is the only way I see the Sixers making the playoffs.

  • Hussman25

I can already see how their movie ends. I watch the other teams though. Orlando is looking like a real threat to Boston in my opinion.

  • dude11

Nobody ever said Conley is better than Iverson, because he obviously isn’t.
Being the starter doesn’t automatically mean you’re better than your backup. You think Ginobili is the 6th best player on the Spurs? Is Keith Bogans better than him? Nope, that’s just balancing your player rotation.
Not that hard to understand, is it?
Mayo-Gay-Randolph take a LOT of shots. To play Gasol and Conley along with them makes perfect sense, and in the second unit, Iverson can play his game to keep the offense competitive.
Too bad his ego…sorry, his HEART is too big for not starting. Right.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

PHX ain’t doing anything in the playoffs but it’s still entertaining basketball. Don’t sleep on Denver, they have a mean 8-man rotation. It’s a toss up right now in the East: Boston beat Cleveland, Cleveland beat Orlando, Orlando beat Boston. Inconclusive.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

@TAD I reckon Young will surpass Iggy in his career, but dude got ways to go before that. Iggy is the only other player I can think of alongside Lebron who consistently gets close to grabbing a tripdub every other game. Dude has gone 18/8/9 or similar in over half the games this season, if that all round performance doesn’t deserve to be relatively central to a teams plan then I don’t know what does. No doubt he shouldn’t be our primary scorer, his J is standard and a standard J isn’t going to light it up when you need that extra kick. AI solves that problem and I suspect Iggy will enjoy working off the ball more; he’s been willing to step up and do what’s been partly asked/partly expected of him over last couple of years but it’s obvious he shouldn’t be #1 scorer and he probably knows that. You ball? Coach gives you responsibility, you got confidence, you’ll do whatever is asked of. It’s probably a similar situation all though the transition from being ‘top dog’ to second fiddle is going to be instant, it will take time to adjust but Iggy droppin to #2 option should work well. Jordan just needs to figure out what to do with that team instead trying to get them to do his thing.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Ill say this though if somehow this situation gets f*cked up I might have to rethink my stance on iverson.

  • tavoris

@dude11- Gasol is taking a lot of shots too. Actually, whenever he has a good game, Gay has a bad game.

  • Yesse

This is great!I hope he is starting so he doesnt have to whine about it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Dude are people seriosuly discounting hte fact that AI hadn’t played a single game with his team and that he was coming back from an injury? The coach said he’d COMPETE for a starting spot, but he didn’t even have a chance to do that because he was hurt. That makes the whole Michael Jackson comparison completely bogus! There were circumstances surrounding his limited PT, it wasn’t just for the heck of it. Why are all you idiots totally discounting this? Do you honestly think Conely was going to start for the entire season? I sure didn’t! Iverson is better than Conely and should have been starting EVENTUALLY, but after he got used to the team and what not.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Wayno
I think you’re right about Memphis, for the record. Iverson was better than Conley, but he handled that whole situation incorrectly and was just completely unreasonable. Like Bryan, I hope he learned some sort of lesson.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I have a question. Does the contract say he’s only signed til Jan. 10? Is that the non-guaranteed part? So what happens after that? That’s roughly when Lou returns. Are they going to just refer back to Lou starting or keep him in the starting line up WITH lou? I’m confused about the Jan. 10 part.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

    Ur So Stupid NIQ!

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

Wayno I don’t think anyone is discounting the fact that AI acted like a moody teenager in Memphis. Nonetheless, your dislike for the man doesn’t border on the line of hate, it borders, no in fact it doesn’t border, IT IS in the down right irrational category. AI’s attitude was wrong in Memphis but if you can’t even tolerate him for making a thoroughly human decision/error then I genuinely pity you, only a bit though because you’re not really worth it. Oh and one other thing; “There were circumstances surrounding his limited PT, it wasn’t just for the heck of it. Why are all you idiots totally discounting this?” You don’t stop to consider the circumstances that AI considered when leaving Grizz do you? Nah, let’s just slander the man without having a balanced picture of him, let’s make myself look like THE idiot for being unable or unwilling (which one?) to grasp the several sides of every story. Or do you just ‘discount’ what you wish and please? Keep it up, it’s almost amusing.

“[ Q: ]For Sixers: Marketing move, basketball move, or desperation move?
    [ A: ]
    J.A. Adande, : 70% marketing, 20% basketball, 10% desperation.

The Sixers are next to last in attendance, averaging 11,965 fans through eight home games. Basketball-wise, it’s not a step toward the gold trophy. He hasn’t won a playoff series since 2003.
    Marc Stein, : 100% marketing, 0% basketball, 100% desperation.

I know the math doesn’t add up, but this is all about a team that’s 100 percent desperate to stay relevant and sell some tickets. The Sixers can say anything they want about needing guard help while Lou Williams’ busted jaw heals, but everybody in the league sees it: Miles away from title contention, Philly is making the business side its No. 1 priority.”

I actually agree with you there Pardeep, it seems like that’s where he has belonged the whole time. It’d be good to see him end his career there. Despite his whiny, obnoxious attitude, it’s good for the league to have him back in Philly.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Is it wrong that, even though the coach lied to Iverson blatantly about his role in Detroit, I still am very disappointed about AI faking his injury and not playing another second for Detroit?
I mean, Rip Hamilton was told he wasn’t going on the bench too and when the coach said, “rip, we benchin’ you,” dude went to the bench with little complaint and changed his entire game.
Iverson refused to do that so much, dude pretended he hurt his back. I mean, this really annoys me.

Wayno, did you not notice how Memphis “conveniently” starting holding Conley accountable right after Iverson left the team? Marcus Williams got 31 minutes THE VERY NEXT GAME (which is more than AI got in any of his 3 games), and within 2 week, Tinsley was playing ALL the clutch minutes. Did the Grizz finally figure out that Conley hasn’t earned consistent minutes once AI left? I doubt it. AI handled it wrong-no doubt-but Hollins’ stonewalling of the rotation certainly contributed to the situation much more than 1%. The owner wanted him there-and the coach didn’t. period.
