Blake Griffin Done for the Season

by Ryne Nelson

After going 8-6 in December, and hearing positive news about No. 1 draft pick Blake Griffin’s impending return, things were looking bright for the Clippers. Then reality hit.

The team has gone 0-4 in 2010, including a bizarre momentum-killing loss in Memphis last night. To make matters worse, the Clips announced that Griffin, who was on track to debut in latter this month, will undergo additional surgery on his left patella, forcing him to miss 4-6 months of action.

Now fans are talking about Greg Oden, as the former No. 1 will be forced to play his first NBA game in November ‘10.

After experiencing some discomfort during his recently-accelerated rehabilitation program, Clippers’ forward Blake Griffin was examined Tuesday afternoon by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

As a result of that examination, it has been determined that the healing in his left patella area has not improved to the expected required level. Griffin will undergo a surgical procedure in the near future, with a recovery prognosis of four to six months. Team personnel will be made available to the media. Further details will be made available as events develop.

The Clippers curse hits again. Here’s to next season!

  • Moose Posted: Jan.13 at 3:45 pm
Ryne, beat me to it. I was ABOUT to type “The Clipper Curse”. Damn right. Sam Bowie 2.0?

  • vmcb Posted: Jan.13 at 3:45 pm
    THE CURSE LIVES ON!

  • Young C Posted: Jan.13 at 3:46 pm
    Wow

  • vmcb Posted: Jan.13 at 3:46 pm
double post, my bad. So much for the Clippers being one of the surprise teams in the West. They’re playing relatively well right now; just imagine what they could have done with Griffin in the line up.

  • vmcb Posted: Jan.13 at 3:47 pm
double post, my bad. Who thought that Taylor Griffin would end up playing more minutes than Blake in ‘09-’10?

    poor clips

  • vmcb Posted: Jan.13 at 3:51 pm
    today has been a struggle.

  • Royal Posted: Jan.13 at 3:58 pm
    Sad…..

  • Joe Posted: Jan.13 at 4:07 pm
This is what happens when the Clippers organizations denies and refutes any such curse, it continues to show itself. All the Clippers organization has to do is acknowledge that there is a curse, and I’ll bet (so will Gil) that the curse goes away.

  • niQ Posted: Jan.13 at 4:08 pm
OUCH! Although this is pretty sad news, and I hope he recovers as soon as possible. It was hard not to think of Greg Oden, and laugh..

  • mems Posted: Jan.13 at 4:21 pm
wow the clips cannot get a break.

  • ceize Posted: Jan.13 at 4:22 pm
Ummm, Clips had actually won four in a row going into last night. They beat the Lakers last week on national t.v. even. Check your sources.

  • tavoris Posted: Jan.13 at 4:23 pm
    ^what r u talking about?

  • Sam Joynt Posted: Jan.13 at 4:29 pm
Tyreke Evans just dodged his only real ROY threat, and John Wall now has some competition for next year.

  • ceize Posted: Jan.13 at 4:32 pm
Sorry, that wasn’t really clear. “The team has gone 0-4 in 2010.” They were actually 3-0 until last night. Just saying…

  • Cant Tell you Posted: Jan.13 at 4:47 pm
Gosh i feel sad for them

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Jan.13 at 4:53 pm
What oeize said: The Clippers are 3-1 in 2010.

  • K. Lee Posted: Jan.13 at 4:54 pm
He has about the same amount of minutes as Hashame Tahbeet or Jordan Nil? Too light?

  • Jaren Posted: Jan.13 at 5:08 pm
As a blazer fan i know how this feels. Lets hope he’ll be back next year ready. Its truly disappointing for a clipper fan

  • onlyclipsfanonslam Posted: Jan.13 at 5:11 pm
sigh, AND it’s raining here in LA.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Jan.13 at 5:21 pm
niQ: I thought about Oden alright, but laugh? I don’t get it.

  • ld5 Posted: Jan.13 at 5:31 pm
all cause of that dunk against the hornets

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Jan.13 at 5:40 pm
    No curse.. Just bad karma.

  • niQ Posted: Jan.13 at 5:40 pm
It’s not too late to tank for John Wall! 2 number 1 picks! If you get John Wall, please take care of him!

  • Dave Posted: Jan.13 at 5:41 pm
    I have sympathy for Blake.
No sympathy for the Clippers, though. Great losers, or the greatest losers?

  • Yassi Posted: Jan.13 at 5:42 pm
    oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOO :-((((((((

  • Yassi Posted: Jan.13 at 5:42 pm
was he on the SLAM cover yet???

  • The Philosopher Posted: Jan.13 at 6:02 pm
Like I’ve been saying forever, why don’t they wear knee pads?

  • kudos Posted: Jan.13 at 6:03 pm
    - I guess surgery didn’t go that well the first time. Hopefully he isnt no greg oden redux. Considering he had knee surgery in college, and not in highschool too like oden. He’s a beast if he recovers.

  • litetitan Posted: Jan.13 at 6:33 pm
Blake Griffin, Eddie Curry and Greg Oden walk into a haunted bar…

  • barnabusb Posted: Jan.13 at 6:42 pm
Imagine if the Clips got the number one pick again? That would be tuuuurrible.

  • fizzrocket Posted: Jan.13 at 6:57 pm
    The Clippers need to relocate.

  • L Posted: Jan.13 at 7:19 pm
Dang. Im actually impressed by the Clips this year. Bummer! I wanted to see him play! He was stellar in preseason

  • robb Posted: Jan.13 at 7:28 pm
That’s terrible news. I can’t imagine Blake’s frustration. Get well man, can’t wait to see you play.

  • litetitan Posted: Jan.13 at 7:58 pm
    Thanks Lisbon!

  • clipperfan Posted: Jan.13 at 9:13 pm
This guy is an idiot…They had a 4 game winning streak going into Memphis. They lost that game by despite not playing Kaman and Telfair. Camby was sick only played a quarter. We were heating up but I guess this guy wanted to this all sound more dramatic. How did this guy survive budget cuts?

  • tealish Posted: Jan.13 at 9:40 pm
@Ryne — The Clips have won at least twice this year.

  • jb44 Posted: Jan.13 at 10:30 pm
More like Sam Bowie 3.0…….. Oden was 2.0

  • RV Posted: Jan.13 at 11:01 pm
@SLAM: please get it together in your subscription dept…i’ve been getting numerous postcards claiming my sub is nearly expired FOR THE LAST YEAR. Now i got an email earlier this month claiming it officially expired, oh but i’m still getting one more issue…well that issue just arrived and guess what the cover on the issue said? I STILL HAVE YET ANOTHER ISSUE LEFT. I’d email your customer service instead of ranting on here, but when i did that about 2-3 months ago their reply was basically “yeah you’re getting those postcards because your sub is almost over”…well DUH and no it wasnt about to expire..That’s probably the only way to scare off someone who’s been reading your mag since 95 and a subcriber for most of the past decade..

  • dma Posted: Jan.13 at 11:12 pm
is there a voodoo doll in the Clippers’ locker room or something? NOW.. if Griffin gets hurt in next year’s first game like Oden…

  • Joe Posted: Jan.14 at 12:23 am
    Shaun Livingston-Michael Redd-Tracy McGrady-Blake Griffin-Greg Oden.
    Thats a nice starting 5

  • warrior Posted: Jan.14 at 11:26 am

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Jan.14 at 12:06 pm
Good looks, tealish. Should’ve known better than to trust ESPN.com.

  • md33 Posted: Jan.14 at 8:53 pm
As bad as this is for the clippers, and as disappointing so far as the entire season has been for them…they still have a better record than the Bulls - who sit in the 8th spot out east.

  • GametimeWeezy Posted: Jan.16 at 11:11 am
    blake who?
