Post Up: Raptors over Lakers

Where Kobe missing the game-winner happens.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Oh boy. It sure is going to feel like Monday in a few hours. I’ve got to keep this one short today. The Lakers/Raptors game took about everything out of me. Wow. I’m so, so, so spoiled here in Toronto with my fellow media members that I’m used to. We know each other, we work well with/around each other and we have more than enough space to operate.

With L.A. in town, there were like 10 traveling wrters with them (I’m seriously not exaggerating), and extra tv people, cameramen, you name it. It was a zoo! The funniest part was that the L.A. people were not phased in the least because they see this every game.

It was wild.

The Lakers just have a buzz that surrounds them. Somehow, someway, the Raptors outbuzzed them on Sunday night and got the 106-105 victory. Definitely their biggest win of the season, they chipped away at a 10-poit deficit in the third quarter and fought LA throughout the forth, finally escaping victorious after Kobe Bryant missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

And, boy, what a miss it was.

Bobbling the ball with 1.2 seconds remaining, he still manages to get a good look and great shot off. Antoine Wright said it hit every part of the basket before rimming out. It looked good from everywhere in the arena according to everyone that I spoke to.

It was the kind of shot you expect Kobe to make. It was the kind of win that the Raptors will try to continue building off of.

Kobe was brilliant in the loss with 27 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and nine assists. Pau and Andrew Bynum pulled down nine rebounds apiece and scored 22 and 21 points respectively. Jordan Farmar scored 17 off of the bench.

The Raptors countered with their aggressiveness on the offensive end, resulting in their 26 free throw attempts as compared to the nine that LA attempted.

Jarrett Jack had another strong game for the Raptors (and is still slotted in as the starting point guard), finishing with 18 points. Chris Bosh also had 18 points to go with 13 rebounds and Andrea Bargnani had 22 points in his return from missing a game due to a sore lower back. Hedo Turkoglu saved the day after going 1-for-6 from the floor for the game. Driving to the hoop and getting fouled by Pau with 1.2 seconds remaining, he hit two free throws to give the Raps the one-point lead. His free throws would end up being the final points scored in the game.

Amazing that it would be Turkoglu to finish off the Lakers –well, technically, Kobe finished off LA when his shot was off the mark, because everyone thought he had it– when he was getting booed just this past Friday evening against Milwaukee.

The Clippers came to Washington and took down the Wizards, 92-78. Marcus Camby had another strong game, finishing with 12 points and 19 rebounds. Love seeing him play well. And be healthy.

The Mavs played the Knicks at the Garden and, well, really they didn’t play at all. They kind of allowed Dallas to roll all over them, losing by 50 –yes, 50– points. 128-78. It was the words loss to ever take place in MSG.  In one word: Ugly It also happened without Jason Kidd. JJ Barea started for the Mavs and scored 11 points, but it was rookie R. Beaubois who made me smile, finishing with 13 on the afternoon. Drew Gooden had 15 points to go with his 18 boards. The Mavs shot 58 percent for the game. Gooden was a +41 in the game.

It was silly.

I’m just happy I was there to watch the Raptors/Lakers game. It was a battle throughout the second half and if you got to see it, I’m sure you’d agree that it was a good game.

Good look lakers cavs are officially number 1 and 23 will officially be mvp 2010

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

It was a good game! One thing that really grinds my gears about the online league pass is that the soundtrack doesn’t always match the video. It got really bad in the fourth quarter of the Raps-Lakers game where the action was getting called about 6 seconds before you actually saw it happen. which is pretty frustrating when a game goes down to the wire. Imagine watching Luke Walton receiving the ball from the ref to inbound the ball with 1.2 secs left and hearing the announcers already yelling that the game is over and that Kobe just missed a last second three. it sucks

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Good lord, that was the most sensational miss i’ve seen in years. Bad pass hits left hand while Kob’s is heading right, clockwise spin-fadeaway from wayyyy downtown, sails through the air (and i swear everyone in T-Dot were holding their breath) and rims out???? Holy gawd that guy is spooky good at times. That being said, luuuuv that the road trip is 1:2 so far…. Nyaatch.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

Jarrett Jack really took it to the Lakers this game. I was impressed. Andrea Bargnani also looked really agressive which impressed me.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

so to summarize, i was impressed

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Drew Gooden, 18 boards…. Thanks for letting Mavs grab him, Popovic.

  • Hoodsnake

Let the undue LeBron hating begin.

  • Buschfire

Good win? that was a great win by the Raptors. Bosh, Bellinelli, Jack, Johnson, and Bargnani and everyone else on the Raptors played a full 48 mins! it was there best team effort win of the season. That said, they really grinded it out. & Thanks to the Turkish Jordan for making both his free throws!. I know I was holding my breath when Kobe released that shot though it was oh so close… good job boys, now carry the momentum into the second half of the season so that I can see you in at least the first round of the playoffs!

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

    Kobe sucks.

  • http://www.slamonline.com T-Money

Ron Artest is hurting them at this point. Can’t drive, can’t post up, can’t D-up… he is shooting alright from deep but that’s about it. I’ve noticed something about LA this week-end: their starting 5 players are all below average in terms of leaping ability at their position.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I don’t think you can include Kobe in that equation, T-Money.

  • http://www.slamonline.com T-Money

    Eboy: fair.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

don’t underestimate Lamar’s vertical. He doesn’t do it often, but I’ve seen him put down some sick dunks.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

I take that back, he’s not a starter.

  • LA Huey

Kobe would’ve had a 20/20 if it weren’t for the finger.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Lamar’s saving his “vertical” for the Kardashian back home.

  • T-Money

The finger thing is getting ridiculous. When he goes for 40 and shoots the lights out, nobody talks about it. If he’s going to play with a broken finger all year-long and not rest to let it heal, that’s on him. What is he trying to prove? Stay in the MVP race? The #1 seed is a lock.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

post up should be about all weekend´s games holly, not just yesterdays! I wasnt a big fan of Derrick Rose, well, his SPECTACULAR DUNK(not the most nasty, but imo, THE BETTER LOOKING DUNK OF THIS SEASON) against Phoenix and clutch shot vs Houston kind of changed my mind..still think hes a scoring PG, but a great one, that kid´s for real and his quiet demeanor seems great when loots of cats thing they own all sh1t! mr.Rose has one more fan. oh, and I feel for those Knicks man. also, Philly have a team, on paper,

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Rose just PUNCHED that two hander on Dragic. Cuuuhrazy Dunk.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    to absoluty be a 6 7 8th seed, something gone wrong there…

  • http://www.slamonline.com T-Money

I’m even more pissed off at DRose after that dunk. He should bring that stuff every night. Durant called it a NBA Live 2004-type dunk.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

It seems Im not able to write in good english today BUT one more thing, Rodney Stuckey´s a class act and I like Big Ben BUT CHARLIE V IS A P(SSY PUNK BIAT(TCH, plus crazy a$$ mofo doesnt even know how to play the game and wants to take his frustrations on players who take him to schooll, LOL… Didnt like that Detroit atittude against a team of young guys WITHOUT ALL HIS BIG MEN and Roy, coward A$$ Villanueva…LaMarcus Aldridge showed him how to get it done!

  • http://sbrother.wordpress.com brothersteve

Thanks Kobe! You took over the Lakers offense for 4 long jumpers in the last 2 minutes going 1-4. Whew! If you hadn’t helped us out there, the Raps might have lost!

And thanks for letting DeRozan and Belinelli shoot unchanged jumpers all game! They almost outscored you going 8-17 for 25 points while you were 11-24 for 27.

That was a really exciting game.

  • tom

that inbound pass on the last play lost them the game but I feel happy for toronto

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Kobe needs to rest. I don’t care about the numbers. He needs to sit his ass down for a week. Minimum.

  • Buschfire

Toronto needs to step it up to be a contender in the Playoffs. Great win for Toronto, but its not a turning point until they can get that sort of Consistency on Defense that we all want and hope for. I can’t wait till Reggie Evans gets back into the lineup so that other teams players will really think twice before taking it to the basket.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Hedo sold the hell out of that phantom foul.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

Yeah Dark, that Rose dunk was FEROCIOUS.. Dunk of the year in my book. I can’t imagine seeing anything worse than that this season.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

T-Money: The break in Kobe’s shooting hand isn’t really a break, it’s an avulsion fracture. So, on one hand, it’s not as bad as a break, and resting or playing wont matter because it’s going to heal on its own if it’s slapped or not. On the other hand, it’s still clearly effecting Kobe.
HOWEVER, if Kobe is having back problems, -THAT- is healed by sitting on the damn bench. So, I don’t really get why he keeps playing.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

and yeah, Allen’s right, I’m happy the fakeshow lost, but Hedo flopped hardcore.

  • The Wize

Can we please stop with the “where such and such happens”? It is so lazy and I absolutely hate that slogan, it makes my skin crawl (sorry, I teach English grammar all day!)

  • http://nicekicks.com Anonymous

Holly, the reason people were booing him on friday is simple… he sucks. And i know he hit the game winning freethrows, but if it wasn’t for that, he wud be booed again. I dont think theres a single fan in toronto that legitematly wants him to be on the team

  • ab_40

let kobe rest put him in a box for one week two at max. it’s not just his finger it’s his back as well.

he’ll be playing good ball after the all star break… remember in 07 wehen kobe sat it out after 7 seconds guess what’s gonna happen this time around?

man mavs knicks. david lee as an all star is officialy out of the window for me. Drew gooden could get 18 and 10 with the knicks haha. 90% of the power forwards in the L could get 19 and 11 when the whole offense runs through em and no one on the team rebounds

  • Buschfire

he didn’t flop, there was contact..not enough to really call the foul though, but Hedu definitley indulged a little, wouldn’t any player do that in that situation though? you can’t hate…

  • Dave

    “fazed” not “phased”

  • http://www.realcavfans.com Anton

    On march the Saints!

  • J-RO

Lol @ Kobe’s injuries. Nobody complained on Friday…..

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com ClutchPerformer

My Raptors Straight earned that win
Im tired of hearing Kobe lost it for them
or if it wasnt for his finger blah blah

I co-sign on T-Money Statement about his injuries

when he plays awesome hes Jesus and the second coming of Jordan, when he plays like crap or loses its the finger, maybe he just lost
Turk has been great for the team, he may not be scoring big but he comes through on other things like faciliating and running the offense and what not

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

i was wondering when someone would play “spelling Holmes” and point that one out to Holly… didn’t take long.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

Goodjob on the win Raptors! Man, I watched the first quarter and thought they were done. Then tuned back in with liek 5 minutes left the 4th quarter and what a crazy game it became. But yea, if Kobe was smart, he would let his injuries heal… I mean, even a week or 2 won’t kill your standings THAT bad.

  • floe

i love the fact that even through the minor turmoil turk’s been playing very unselfish on the court. you gotta give props for that. i still think it was a good sign.. we’ll see.

  • http://slamonline.com tina

Kobe’s finger is similar to the Cavs players (except Lebron). When they win it’s all good when they lose they need to fix it. Great win by the Raptors, would’ve loved the game even more if Kobe’s shot went in. I know just about everyone in the Arena was holding their breath.

  • http://nicekicks.com Meloman2.0

    BRETT FAVRE!! OMG

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

    I rarely criticize Pau but 10-23 can’t happen if you’re 7 ft

  • http://www.slamonline.com T-Money

tina: when the cavs win, we still know they don’t have a lot of talent. they win because they play hard core d, push ppl around and have bron. that’s it. i mean, how many contenders have only one all-star on their team? how many nba champions had only one all-star?

  • http://www.raptors.com LeeVan

The atmosphere last night at the ACC was intense!

@Anonymous- I’m a huge Raptors fan and I DEFINITELY want Hedo on our team!
Sure, his lack of scoring has been a big disappointment, but that’s not what we need the most from him (seeing how we’re the highest scoring team in the east). Hedo has been shooting horrendously (isn’t alliteration fun?), but he’s been passing the ball well, along with facilitating the offense quite frequently.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

T-Money apparently has never heard of Mo Williams, Shaq or even Big Z because they’ve all been allstars.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Hedo was a good sign because the Raptors are already decent when he’s playing awful, but when he plays well its just an extra bonus. Maybe his contract is a bit heavy but who cares? The Raptors aren’t hinging their entire future on cap space like the Knicks.

  • http://www.slamonline.com T-Money

    b-long: this year?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Brad Long beat me to it. Although Shaq and Big Z are well past their all-star prime and Mo Williams only got there because the coaches felt obligated to put another player from the Cavs on the squad.

  • A.

@Brad Long: Let’s see how many are All-Stars this year. Shaq isn’t playing at an All-Star level anymore, neither is Z. Mo was an All-Star last year because of playing with LeBron. T-Money’s point still stands. Show me an All-Star other than LeBron on the Cavs RIGHT NOW.

  • kudos

A – Umm how many all star’s are the magic gonna have this year??? Last year lebron had a team full of 5 players who used to be all-stars and people STILL COMPLAINED that he had no talent. It’s hilarious. Mo william’s has always been good, i havn’t seen lebron make anyone better than they already are. in fact, you could say the cav’s won’t have any all stars because they’re doing worse than last year. peace-

  • A.

@kudos: The Magic are playing like sh!t. That’s why they have no other All-Stars. “in fact, you could say the cav’s won’t have any all stars because they’re doing worse than last year.” See: Magic. With LeBron on the team the Cavs will ALWAYS have an All-Star. I still don’t see your point. B.Long said that Z, Mo and Shaq were all All-Stars and they count. Clearly Z and Shaq are worse than their All-Star selves. Mo is injured. So again, who are the All-Stars on the Cavs?

  • rob

@Mvp23100 yeah, and another championship for Kobe and another Zero for LBJ. Without Arenas we could start calling James the new Agent Zero. It suits him well.

  • J-RO

@ Kudos. The Cavs ended last season as the team with the best record. As of now thats still the same case. So how exactly are they doing worse?

the new ish of slam is great, as always, but it seems they do a story on the hawks every couple of months. There are plenty of other up and coming teams whom I think deserve the ink. Also, in trash talk some kid says hes 16 years old, then he goes on to say hes been a fan of Shaq since he entered the L.. Huh??? =If im not mistaken that kid was no more then a slug trail on his dad’s thigh during Shaq’s rook year.

oops, sorry bout that. New phone.

    YE RAPS!
They earned the w. I was pretty nervous when the ball was in Turk’s hands in those final seconds though. I think that was a coaching error on Triano’s part. I would have had the ball in the hot hands who were showing up all game (Barg, Belli, or Jack). Turk almost got trapped and got REAL lucky that he got the foul call.

He really needs to step his game up. I’m one of those raptor fans who are starting to get really frustrated about how he’s playing. Seeing that Pizza Pizza ad doesn’t help the growing frustration either!

That being said, here’s to hoping he’ll come alive offensively in the second half of the season.
