Report: Arenas and Crittenton Pulled Guns on Each Other

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

When the public at large learned that Gilbert Arenas had inexplicably stored guns in his locker room at the Verizon Center, I made the bad (but requisite) joke that Gil just wanted to be ready when his team became the Washington Bullets again.

Little did I know at the time that actual gun play took place in the Wizards’ locker room. At least that‘s what the New York Post is reporting today. Thankfully, actual bullets weren’t involved.

Here is the absolutely insane story:

NBA all-star Gilbert Arenas and his Washing ton Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other in the team’s locker room during a Christmas Eve dispute over a gambling debt, The Post has learned.

League sources say the pistol-packing point guards had heaters at the ready inside the Verizon Center, the Washington, DC, home of the Wizards — whose name was changed from the Bullets over gun violence concerns. It was the three-time all-star Arenas, 27, who went for his gun first, sources said, drawing on the 22-year-old Crittenton, who quickly brandished a firearm as well.

The duel in DC — unprecedented in sports history — was sparked when Crittenton became enraged at the veteran guard for refusing to make good on a gambling debt, a source said. “I’m not your punk!” Crittenton shouted at Arenas, according to a league source close to the Wizards. That prompted Arenas to draw on Crittenton, who then also grabbed for a gun, league security sources said.

A playground pal of Crittenton’s from Atlanta, Kendrick “Bookie Ball” Long, confirmed the locker-room standoff and said he learned of it directly from the third-year player out of Georgia Tech. “He [Arenas] was f- – -ing with him; he [Crittenton] was just defending himself!” declared Long, who said the dispute was over money but would not elaborate.

As if the crippling hangover from the festivities last night wasn‘t bad enough; now we gotta try and wrap our minds around this. Yikes.

For his part, Arenas doesn‘t appear to be too concerned about any of this, as he Twitters away like a maniac.

Much more on this on Monday, obviously.

    innocent until proven guilty.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net Flashback

If this story is true both these mofo’s should AT LEAST be suspended for the remainder of the season. If not you can start counting the days when one of these “Media Gangstas” actually shoots someone.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net Flashback

or is that Studio Gangstas? None the less, these are two stupid assholes who might ruin the existing fanbase.

  • Jacqueline Mitchell

Dang, They must really want to be called the “Bullets” again.

this probably isn’t true at all

Peter Vecsey ‘broke’ this story, so I think I’ll wait until I get some better corroboration before I condemn anyone. It also seems to come from only one source – this friend of Crittenton’s. Where are the eyewitness accounts by players/people who were actually there? This just sounds like typical Post ‘reporting’.

There is only one way to settle this:

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Seriously though, Imma whip out my semi-automatic machine pun.
    1. First time in Gilbert’s entire career he’s passed up the opportunity to shoot.
    2. Gil’s known for busting caps – salary and otherwise.
    3. I don’t know why Javaris felt the need to pull his own gun, everybody knows that Arenas can’t shoot under pressure.
    4. Gil never had anything to fear. Javaris can’t shoot.
    5. Shaq offered to protect Arenas’ fiance with blank shotgun shells.

  • Kas

haha Anton, good ish. but seriously, gun law in america is insane. no one needs to own a hand gun, unless one is a gangster or a cop.

  • Mack

    FAIL

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Kas:Here’s the problem. Most law abiding citizens who own guns do so for there own protection from the people who do break the law and aren’t really concerned with any type of gun ban. It’s not like the U.S. can pass a law telling everyone to turn in there guns and Paublo Escobar is gonna call his coke dealers up and tell them, “Make sure you remember to turn in your semiautomatics!”. So if a ban is put in place the only people it really effects are the people who had them for the right reasons in the first place.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

Right. And so there’s the answer to my question of “Why were authorities involved in someone keeping their guns at work?” Because they were playing cowboys and indians in the lcker room, that’s why the authorities were called.

  • luv2ball

Ummmm I am sorry but I can not, and I repeat can not trust a source whose name is “Bookie Ball”.

I guess the post has gone the way of Fox news…

  • Shaft

Brad, sorry, but “law abiding citizens who own guns for their own protection” just create a more dangerous atmosphere.
Nothing more. It only exacerbates the problem.

Shaft: Yeah, look how well the strict gun laws have worked in Mexico…
    oh wait…

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

Yeah shaft so lets ban guns and you and me and everyone who respects laws will turn ours in. Meanwhile every criminal will keep theirs and we will be f*cked. Great plan. In a perfect world no one would have guns and that would be great but in the meantime since outlaws are arming themselves with semi automatic weapons , upstanding citizens keeping a pistol in the nightstand shouldn’t raise any eyebrows.

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick thesubwayconnection

Just so people are aware, when questioned about it, Gil said it wasn’t true and that he was considering filing a lawsuit against the Post.

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

In fairness, we should have realized Arenas was armed and dangerous when he pulled a gun on that cab driver in that commercial

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

this isnt fair that Anton gets to use photobucket links. I never had that ability back when i was in my prime. Good stuff though, it provide the lolz

  • Marvin

Just saw the ESPN news segment on this story and Arenas go to prison for a minimum of five years. Wow, that’s scary and disheartening, Arenas should have known better. I really like him as a player and his spirit. I’m officially F’ed in my fantasy league.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

My first post disappeared. But to sum things up:
    1. Bookie Ball and unnamed (made up?) sources are the 2 things keeping this story alive
    2. Peter Vecsey is the king of reporting bs.
    3. This is too funny/sad to be true

I call bs. But if Gilbert Arenas seriously did this, along with Shaq stealing his girl, and him forgetting how to play for most of the season so far proves that anyone can fall off and fall hard.

  • doyouwantmore

(If this story is true) I will be disgusted if whoever drew first gets to play one more minute or spend one more dollar of NBA money. Who else can draw a gun on a co-worker and still work for their organization even one more day?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Marvin, Arenas hasnt been sentenced to any prison time. Their hasnt been any proof this is real, any charges filed, and court case involving Gilbert. What 5 years are you talking about?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

This was on Gil’s twitter: “i wake up this morning and seen i was the new JOHN WAYNE..lmao media is too funny”

  • Michael Scorn

This is where we need Michael Scorn to make it into a three way stand off.

  • Marvin

BETCATS, I’m truly hoping that these are just allegations and none of this has happened, but this whole situation is just damn crazy. For this situation to be even possible shows a lack of character on both sides.

  • Yesse

Nuts! This could even mean jail time for both.No wonder why the team is having problems at the moment.

  • LA Huey

    delonte would take them both

  • underdog

If this story is true… it’s not funny at all.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

@Jukai: Yeah, look how well the strict gun laws have worked in Mexico…oh wait…
One could argue it did work in Australia.
