Report: Zach Randolph Headed to All-Star Game

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

When the Memphis Grizzlies acquired Zach Randolph from the Clippers, most people — myself included — simply assumed that his downward spiral into total irrelevancy would continue.

Instead, Z-Bo has led the surging Grizzlies into Playoff contention (currently holding the 7th seed in the Western Conference), and is having himself a tremendous season.

For his efforts, Randolph appears to be a shoo-in for the All-Star game next month. According to a report in the Commercial Appeal, Zach will be named as a reserve for the big game tonight:

Zach Randolph will be named an All-Star reserve for the Western Conference, according to sources with knowledge of the voting.

Randolph, a nine-year veteran, will make his first All-Star appearance during the Feb. 14 game in Dallas. He entered Wednesday night’s game at Detroit as the only Western Conference player averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Grizzlies’ power forward is averaging nearly 21 points and a career-high 11.5 rebounds.

Despite his enormous talent, there was so little belief in what Zach Randolph would accomplish in Memphis this season, that the NBA didn’t even bother to put his name on the All-Star voting ballots.

Here’s to hoping this is the start of a new and upward trend for Z-Bo’s career, and not just a one-year accident.

and they never play D in the all star game so this will be perfect for zbo…but really he deserves it hes having a great season and turning the grizz into winners!

  • hannibal

He was beastin here in New York, a double double every night, They just deemed him a failed experiment cuz they wanted to do some twin towers thing with eddy curry. he gets a bad rap though. go z-bo

Good for him. Grizzlies deserve the love.

  • Hussman25

Congrats to Zach! He really deserved this, if this is true! He always had the talent, but he checked his ego and is playing GREAT!

  • baller23

Good for Zack he deserve it..

  • Yesse

Well he has been working hard.Last season he was just angry and starting fight’s.

    M-V-Z-BO.

He has always been a double-double machine, it’s his attitude that’s been the problem. The difference is that he’s now playing for a winning team.

Playing some good ball he is, but OJ Mayo’s efficient play has stopped the bickering over shots with Gay and (along with Z-Bo) keyed the Griz.

They should wait until mid-December before creating the ballot instead of picking people before the season hoping that they have a good year. Also if you get injured or suspended you should be taken off the ballo until you return.

Never been a big fan of Z-bo’s character, passing, or defense. Rebounding and scoring is a different story. Good for him. He really deserves it this year. I would have been pissed if he’d been snubbed. Rondo should be starting. Very glad that Nash is.

  • PrimeSinister

His troubles usually mask his talents but real heads should know whats really going on. Zach always been a beast! In the past, even though he caught a lot Ls playing my squad (the Lakers), I would always notice Zach feasting on us when he was in Portland or anywhere else. It wasn’t like what Rasheed used to do to us but a close second. Memphis was a perfect fit for dude, I’m happy for Zach & I’m glad ppl (media mostly) are finally recognizing game.

Agree with all the statements above. Also cosign Brian. Mayo has been the key. While he could be pissed that he’s not the number one option, he’s just going about his business playing the right way.

  • T-Money

he got screwed up in NYC, ppl don’t remember now but he was straight before they shipped him to LA.

  • E

The differece was he actually worked out last summer. He said it was the first time he actually worked out and got into better shape in the off-season. Good for him.

  • NDP

How many reserves have been named after not even being on the ballot?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

He’s ALWAYS been good… He should have been an All-Star three years ago when he was averaging almost 24 ppg along with 10 rpg. But no, he’s a black hole right? Pshh.

  • Hawkules

We gonna mess around and see those Grizz harness their inner Sac Kings and start destroying guys. Z-Bo playing the role of Chris Webber. The story is almost the same. Disgruntled power forward shipped off to desolate team in the west craving for a shot in the arm. Forward doesn’t really plan on staying. Couple pieces here and there and we got us a solid team.

  • md33

When he was in Portland we used to call him the Black Hole, cause the ball would go in but it never came back out. I hope he’s fixed that, cause I always wanted to like the dude, but his play infuriated the piss out of me.

  • Jon

He was pretty good in NY too. I think I must be like one of six people out there stupid enough then to buy a Randolph Knicks jersey. Got teased alot. LOOK WHOS LAUGHING NOW?!

he deserves it.. he’s not a talented defensive player, but the few times i’ve watched the Grizz play this year, i’d actually say that he’s put in a lot more effort on the defensive end than he has earlier on in his career.
