The Post Up: Bron’s Good

But can we cut this Dunk Contest talk?

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

And after a jam-packed MLK Monday, we went back to a quiet Tuesday with only two games on the schedule. I didn’t quite know what to do with my evening when I had to sit down to write after the games were over. I’m used to a background of NBA action. I ended up choosing the Australian Open instead.

I had to liveblog the Raptors/Cavs game and even though Toronto lost 108-100 — and fell apart in the fourth– I was still satisfied with the game. Truly, the Cavs gave them about eight different chances to take control of the game in the fourth quarter if they wanted and the Raptors shot themselves in the foot. Missed free throws, horrible shot selection (off-balance, fadeaway three pointers? Yikes), a divergence from the closing line up of Jarrett Jack and Jose Calderon that we’ve become accustomed to seeing (Jack remained on the bench), Bosh fading down the stretch where he’s been so good all season, there was a combo of things that went wrong for the Raps, but still, they hung with a Cavs team that is much, much improved from the one that they defeated in Toronto on opening night.

It wasn’t a bad loss.

LeBron is insane. You think, “Oh, looks like he’s had a good stretch here, better check the box score,” and you realize just how involved he was for his team and how he was so much better than you had imagined.

28 points, nine rebounds, 11 assists, three steals and three blocked shots.

He’s pretty good. Even if he doesn’t participate in the dunk contest. To everyone that’s saying he’s selfish and denying the fans what they want to see, I ask this: What if he realized he’d be a shitty contest dunker and is only good in games and he withdrew himself from the competition so he didn’t disappoint for the sake of the fans? Hmm.

I will say this: Shaq, hush up. Kobe and Vince, etc., never wanted to be any part of this in the first place so don’t throw them under the bus. Kobe is probably trying to keep the fingers and back healthy for a playoff run. As much as LeBron wants ring number one, you know Kobe wants five just the same. Health is likely the reason why LeBron will avoid the competition and that’s fine, but his teammate needs to stop speaking on something that just doesn’t make sense.

Besides, seeing Vince dunk now would just depress me. It would remind me of hops and days gone by. Who wants that? I sure as hell don’t.

Okay. The other game of the night was between the Heat and Pacers. It wasn’t so much of a game as it was a blowout in Miami’s favor. The Heat dominated the Pacers, winning 113-83, jumping out to a 17-point lead after the opening quarter and shooting 56 percent to the game. In comparison, Indiana could barely hit a shot, shooting a dismal 36 percent.

Dwyane Wade finished with 32 points and Michael Beasley added 21 and 10 boards. Brandon Rush had another strong game for the Pacers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, scoring his 17 on 7-for-9 field goals.

I didn’t see much of that one, but truly, it didn’t seem overly eventful. If it was, tell me what I missed.

Also, give me your take on this Shaq talk on the dunk contest. Who was the oldest guy in recent history to participate in the contest? I kinda think it’s meant for the young guys, right?

If you didn’t hear, Sam Dalembert is not with the team right now because he is on his way to Haiti. Thinking of him and giving thanks for all he’s done to speak up, out and for his home country in this trying time.

not sure about the oldest participant, but I think the oldest winner was Dominique Wilkins when he was in his 30′s.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Maybe I’m wrong but I think LeBron is a total ass.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Dalembert may not be on his way to Haiti now that they just reported another earthquake hit early this morning. If he still goes I pray that he stays safe.

  • Dagomar

Now Lebron, Wade and Melo in a dunk contest would be something. Really the contest hasn’t been much since Jordan and Nique though.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I say dead the freakin dunk contest. It’s been lame for a long time.

  • Mvp23100

It seems like cavs only come to play against good teams everyone else they coast or just aint interested And people blow any newsworthy situation with bron up hes a *ss for not shaking hands taking the nike tape not being in the dunk contest give it a f**king rest the man just gave u damn near a triple dub and u whining dp

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

Vince Carter killed he dunk contest. But what the f is shaq thinking? Vince and Kobe have no business being in the dunk contest. Call out Josh Smith if you call out anybody.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

LeBron might be the best in game dunker of all time, but I dont think he has the repertoire for a dunk contest.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mansonovic Mansonovic

Come on, Holly. Shaq is aware of everything he says. Do you really think he believes that Kobe or Vince want any part of this? I don’t think he’s throwing them under the bus at all, I think he’s just playing with people.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Any reason why Turkoglu was booed at the mention of starting line ups? It was the Cavs homecourt…
And aside from that, Hedo has been HORRIBLE this season…

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

Myles, you spelled Domonique Wilkins wrong.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

    I probably did too.

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Shia i think both of you spelled “Shawn Kemp” wrong. Hehe. (but Bron’s amazing too in that ingame discipline)

  • Marvin

@ Holly, Dwight Howard also fits the mold of being a terrible Slam Dunk competition dunker, his posture and size doesn’t give him enough flash and speed to be on par with the most memorable dunkers of the contest (Vince Carter, Micheal Jordan, Dr. J) but he still joined the contest. I credit him for rejuvenating it by incorporating his happy-go-lucky demeanor and bringing entertainment to the whole event by involving the crowd and making them laugh. Are you telling me that Lebron wouldn’t be capable of doing that? He already controls the whole crowd wherever he’s playing, his participation would bring unprecedented attention to the contest and I think with the greatest players whom have joined and won the competition (MJ,Dominique Wilkins, Dr.J, Kobe) it’s a necessary stepping stone for him if he ever wants to be proclaimed as one the best to ever play.

  • jumpman3224

I was surprised how much of a facter Shaq was late. When the game was still a one score affair, he grabbed a big rebound on D and then scored, the next time down the court he facilitated on a play that ended in a mo jumper and the next time down fed a cutting LeBron. If he can play like that in the playoffs the Cavs are even more scary.

  • jumpman3224

The raptors will be in a tough spot in all close games this year. Chris Bosh has a solid outside game for a big guy, but when really contested he doesnt seem to be overly reliable past the foul stripe. Hedo should be running the show in those types of situations, but he has been maddeningly inconsistent.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Lebron can’t win in a dunk contest with costumes and props and sh*t. Dude’s a crazy power dunker, through and through, and he knows that he can’t win the dunk contest if people are dressing up as supermen or jumping over desks or some dumb sh*t.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Man, Bron is so hard to like. The other day he was so c0cky with those 3′s then lost to Utah. The dunk contest. He is such a good player but just a complete tool.
3 of my boys on base here love Lebron, but over the last 2 seasons have stopped liking him because of all the ridiculous sh1t he does. The whining, all the no calls. Only top 30 scorer to have less then 2 fouls per game. The wincing on every play unless he gets free throws. The offensive fouls called on the defender!!! All the goal tends called as blocks. This dunk contest… seems like he did just to get his name in the media more. What a pr1ck. I would like to see him lose to someone like Brown. or wallace… maybe humble him up a bit.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

His mcd’s dunk contest win was underwhelming at best.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Wasn’t Shannon brown the one dunking against him in that? And didn’t Brown beat him?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Oh wait… “should have” beat him!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    James
A Kobe fan asking for another player to be humbled is just hilarious. It really is.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Congrats to Shaq Daddy on 28,000 points.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Kobe at least has 4 championships. Wins in the finals. A DUNK CONTEST. Plus 14 years in the NBA. Bron has GREAT STATS. But fack… I know Kobe isn’t the greatest person. Esspecially to his haters that deny him mvp’s for reasons like “he has a hangnail”. But Bron is ridiculous. Everything he does is arrogant. He think winning is a GIVEN to him. That he is suppose to win every championship. The same reason why last year against orlando he was p1ssed. Not because he lost to orlando, but he doesn’t feel he should EVER lose. I LOVE when he shows REAL emotion, like the 3 he hit against orlando. The dancing stuff, check my $tats… everything. It’s so bad now. I hope he just wins and hopefully stops all the shows.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

There are a lot of people getting into the 20 thousand point range. nice to see the new generation getting up there, but the generation is dying.
And Kobe will be coming for Shaq at the end of next season and the one after that!! : D!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Anyways, I’m out like Lebron in the dunk contest!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Like I said, arrogant is arrogant. You don’t justify arrogance.
Lebron’s arrogance is just as justified as Kobe’s and just as ugly. Saying “Well Kobe has rings” completely ignores all of the nuances in their careers, and manages to imply that arrogance is justified if you’re a winner. Then you say that something is wrong with Lebron because he thinks he should NEVER lose? It doesn’t make sense.
Bottom line, you don’t particularly like Lebron. So, you filter every action of his through a negative lens. You like Kobe so you filter his actions through a positive lens. The reality is that they are fairly similar entities, well except for the fact that Lebron’s never been accused of a violent s*x crime.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

So how bout this all white hoops league?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

what are you talking about bryan?

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

Allenp are we friends on twitter or facebook? There is a new hoops league.. Google it. AABA check it out for real. Unbe-f*cking-leivable.

  • SinceIsh4

If Bron doesn’t appear in the dunk contest, it will be to save face. It won’t have anything to do with not wanting to disappoint his fans. You know this, Holly. Sometimes SLAM takes its player-friendliness a bit too far.

  • http://slamonline.com Raptor Fan

@Niq, it’s cuz Hedo killed the cavaliers last year during the playoffs

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I hear you, niQ. Turkoglu is a straight clutz this year. Good passer, but man his shooting has been off the charts bad.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

I don’t really get James’ problem… I mean, Kobe thinks he should just WIN IT too… remember when they lost to the Suns? Kobe was PO’d at his team so he took just two shots then walked off without shaking hands? I mean, it’s a mirror image of Lebron… so why hate on Kobe?
It took Kobe twelve years to get a legitimate ring as the main option.. why are we not giving Lebron the same time?

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

I will concede that as time goes on, I like Lebron James less and less… he really is all ego… but that doesn’t mean I like Bryant anymore.
I mean, why like an inferior player?

  • The Wize

    “health” lmao

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Shots fired by Jukai…

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

Sorry SORRY about that last line! Last year I thought Lebron was better than Kobe but Kobe switched up his offensive game so now I’m not so sure anymore.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

jr giddens demolshied bron in the wacarnolds contest, but got hurt in the final round. bron won by default. after doin the same dunks multiple times, boooring.

  • http://www.realultimatepower.net doyouwantmore

Shaq was actually bailing Lebron out very deliberately by making it about all the other superstar dunkers as much as Bron. I understand how much Lebron has to lose in the dunk contest, but what bothers me is that MJ and Dominique and other stars did it because they wanted to show off. They wanted to dominate in every arena and every facet of their basketball career. They weren’t worried about messing with their ‘brand’.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

doyouwantmore: You really think MJ would compete in the dunk contests nowadays?

  • LA Huey

I’m disappointed that LeBron’s not in the contest but I don’t get the hate. He seems like he’s just a power dunker with crazy hops and no imagination. And unless we’re just asking him to re-enact classic dunk contest attempts, why would we want to see him compete if he’s got no creativity. Or maybe he is just a pr*ck…and you probably are too for assuming he is.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    *highfives Allenp*
James the balla has the same reasoning ability as retarded wombat.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Public Relations is probably the most annoying part of every sport. Man…

  • Jon

whatever it is. they’re both fantastic players. both arrogant players. but then again, i admire them as players, for what they do on court and nothing else. it would be foolish to think otherwise. as a basketball fan, i am in awe of kobes fadeaways and lebrons dunks. i know they’re both twats off the court but thats a whole different story. if u wanna talk about personality, won’t the best player in the nba be derek fisher or ray allen?

  • rashado

the only reason any one is talking about lebron in the dunk contest is because he committed himself to it. had he not brought it up and announced it on TV no one would be talking about it.

  • http://ricardo8Sanders@aol.com Ricoh

Lebron has the right to change his mind.Lebron has almost a triple double every night he play’s,not mention his 1.8 blocks fron behind on the fast break, and the 1.8 steal every night. The man doesn’t feel like entertaining you folk’s. Arrogance is a quality some of you bloogers on this site have towards sports stars, you people want them to kiss butts, but they don’t. Alot of you people are jealous of thier salaries, many of you don’t understand these people are entertainers plain and simple. They are know different than the extremely over paid actors actresses. However, I don’t hear anybody complaining, because the majority of these people are white. Now ,these people are really arrogant, they think thier God’s,and they are treated as such by the American people. They don’t deserve the money they learn lines, and get paid million for it.e
