Tim Duncan: I’m Still the Man

Duncan is amused by anyone who thinks he’s begun to fall off, and that includes his own coach: “Before the Spurs won their fourth straight road game on Saturday in Washington , coach Gregg Popovich spent a few moments marveling at the resurgence of his hottest player. At age 33, Tim Duncan leads Popovich’s team in scoring (20.0 points per game), rebounding (10.2) and blocked shots (1.8). Admitting he’d had occasional off-season doubt about Duncan ‘s ability to return to the sort of nightly dominance that twice made him the Most Valuable Player, Popovich sounded relieved. ‘I hoped I would (see him back at that level),’ he said, ‘and I have. He’s just been fantastic. He was really wise this summer and took care of himself and was careful with his workouts and didn’t overdo it. He’s reaping the benefits and has been our most consistent player and continues to be the foundation of what we do.’ Duncan chuckled at Popovich’s doubts that he could get back to MVP level. ‘I didn’t know I left this level,’ he said. ‘Did I?”’

  • zabba

The Big Fundamentally Consistent is back.

You know if Lebron made a comment like that this thread would have 150 posts about how conceted he is and what a big head he has. With Duncan everyone’s fine with it.

  • kulas

TD is a four-time NBA champ, three-time NBA Finals MVP, and is recognized as arguably the best power forward to ever play the game, I think he’s qualified enough to say these things. He’s paid his dues.

  • Hussman25

@kulas: *Two thumbs up* @ ur comment. Tim can say just about anything he wants… The resume speaks for itself… Bron’s is still being written

He was injured, he never fell off.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

He never said he’s still the man. And he is still the man.
And stop talking about LeBron… this is about Tim Duncan!

  • JoeMaMa

    Tim Duncan > you

Truth be told, for the past 2 years I’ve passed up on picking up Tim Duncan in Fantasy ball cause I always think he’s done. But he NEVER falls off. I picked up him this year and he is STILL at it. Dude is just simply amazing. Tim Duncan and Steve Nash don’t seem to age.

  • TheTruth

I don’t care what anyone says Tim Duncan is the player of the decade. And well go down as the greatest PF to ever play and one of the top players ever.

  • Taylor

lol moobutter got owned do ya thing timmmy

  • The Wize

Timmy is a humble warrior with a very dry sense of humour…maybe people don’t hate him because of that? Maybe some people don’t like the powder blowing and picture posing. Timmy poses for pics with trophies.

    Tim Duncan is an egomaniac.

  • LCD screen cleaner

Some peeps are entitled to be egomaniacs.

If you read the rest of the article, it looks like he was joking:

“Truth be told, after a season that included a diagnosis of tendonosis in his right quadriceps tendon — a condition defined as chronic soreness — and a second straight season with a scoring average under 20 points per game, Duncan spent a few off-season days pondering what the future might hold.

‘I had a really tough year with injuries and trying to play through all that,” he said of a season that ultimately required the use a right knee brace that he found uncomfortable and limiting.

‘I definitely took a step back.’”

That said, he IS the man. :)

  • Seven Duece

He’s been the truth at that 4 spot since ’97. Just ask KG, CWebb, Stat, etc.

  • http://zapata10.wordpress.com Adrian Zapata

Yes, he is still the man! Thanks for the 3 championships while i was living in San Antonio Tim! Go Spurs!

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Tim Duncan is still the best PF in the league when he wants to dominate. Pau, Cb4, STAT might have better stats but I would never pick any of them in a head-to-head matchup.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i bet this spurs team is really fun to hang out with. they are just down to earth and hilarious.

  • http://www.sixers.com 360vue

there’s just one context for this statement. he’s still the man in SA… but lol as for u deluded fanboys TD saying he’s still the best, those days are long, long gone.

  • David

Tim Duncan is as consistent as Karl Malone, and thankfully he’s not as annoying as Karl Malone. I doubt Timmy will catch Karl’s scoring record but at least he’s got rings.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

he is the man..Timmy!!!!!!!!!!(south park voice)

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

seriously 360? would you bet on any PF in the L giving him the business in a playoffs series?

  • tavoris

@Z-Duncan hasn’t guarded PF’s since Robinson retired. So, Stat and Dirk are giving Bonner & McDyess the business. @360-those days are far from gone…he’s still the best two-way big in the game.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib Michael NZ

Heading is misleading again. TD never said ‘I’m the man’ as it implies.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign Michael NZ.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Duncan will be throwing up 20-10-4-2-1 until he’s 54.

  • kev

    gotta respect the big fundamental!

  • TheTruth

@Tavoris I haven’t missed a spurs game since 04 tim duncan always guards the pf postion if you actually see the rotation you’ll see bonner, mcdyess, blair, and ratliff play the center postion only when they’re running with the smalls does tim play center get your facts right before talking

  • Harlem_World

If he’s healthy – there’s still no better big in the L. It’s not ‘arguable’, TD is the best PF of all-time. Malone’s numbers are incredible, but imagine if TD played with Stockton for all those years? C’mon son…And defensively you can’t compare Malone to TD. Just in case that debate heats up at all – put it on ice with 4 rings and the Finals MVP’s. No PF in history has his resume. At the highest level, excellence has to be heavily measured with success. At the HOF level, everyone can play, score etc. What have you won? More importantly, what have you won as the dominant franchise player on your team? TD wins in a runaway victory against any other PF in history…And he’s still number 1 in the league, as far as bigs go. (On another note, can’t believe I’d ever say this, but Dirk Nowitzki is the next best PF in the league – WAY ahead of Amare and anyone else you care to throw in the mix not named KG).

  • http://www.luketynan.blogspot.com litetitan

Part of me wants to think TD was just channeling his “inner Iverson”.

  • bd1

Duncan is no longer the best PF in the game RIGHT NOW. He may be the greatest (power forward) ever, but I think that Dirk is straight-up dominating that position at the moment. Hell, KG would still be putting up 20/10 if he hadn’t gotten injured.

  • Sarah

lol conceit is not something anyone could ever accuse TD of. And yes, he is still the man.

  • 6marjons

the reason why he is so liked is that most people say they care mostly about winning and tbh most of them probably do they wouldnt be playin a competitive sport if they werent but in the back of most supserstars minds is promotion when has TD ever cared about that kind of stuff?
he is the perfect example if what kids should be lookin torecreate in basketball these days but because of his down to earth personality it brings others like lebron and kobe to the forefront (not that thats a bad thing) and even though he’s not at the level he once was he has been able to adjust his game to his slow decline in athleticism to stick around thats the mark of any great player, russel did it, kareem did it jordan did it, and now the big fundamental has.
big love for the big fundamental

  • dan

    Timmy is Basketball!

  • taena

Tim Duncan is the best! tat tatatat tat thats it!
