Bad Times in Houston

Everyone celebrated their GM at the trade deadline, but the product on the floor is nothing to write home about: “On some level — likely the ground floor of Toyota Center where the practice court is – the Rockets know what must be done to win games. When Rockets coach Rick Adelman lately has said the Rockets must “find out how we’re going to win” he was not speaking of a strategy or system. That much has been obvious. Adelman was speaking of something more difficult to find. On that level — one floor down on the Toyota Center arena court — the Rockets have run into the conundrum of a losing streak. They must experience success to have the confidence it takes to win, but cannot have that confidence until they succeed. ‘For us right now, it’s more of a confidence, attitude thing, and being consistent in what we’re trying to do,’ Adelman said. ‘A lot of what is going on right now is a lack of concentration, mental breakdowns at both ends of the court because, I think, of the (lack of) confidence. We’re playing without the energy and without the enthusiasm we need to play with. A lot of times that comes with losing games. You kind of get down when things don’t quite go right. We have to find a way to play through that.’ The Rockets have lost six of their past seven games, including four consecutive home games.”

Hopefully K-Martin will help them out in the long run

looks like i was at least partially correct.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

This is what happens when you trade Landry away. Just saying.

  • Roberto

I was at the first home game where all three new players suited up (vs. Pacers) and you could hear a good amount of people yelling “We traded Carl Landry for you??!!” Reffering to Kevin Matin. Very few people were happy there.

  • Roberto

    FOUR new players. My bad.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

I hate to sound ignorant, un-nerdlike, or whatever, but please wake me up when the Rockets and their acclaimed modern approach to the NBA wins anything.

  • mems

dont blame the new guys, blame aaron brooks for playing like crap

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Losing Ariza for a few games isn’t going to help them either. Frankly this Houston team has over-achieved this season. With no Yao, TMac, or Artest, they seemed doomed.

  • underdog

Quite frankly, without T-Mac and Yao, for me the Rockets are still a positive surprise this season. I thought they were going to be much worse. But trading Landry away was clearly not the right answer to improve the team. I really don’t get how the GM imagined the co-operation between Brooks and Martin, but that’s one of the reasons why I’m no GM I guess…

  • RV

the answer is a lot of the comments here are short-sighted…landry was undersized, a poor defensive rebounder, not a consistent shit blocker, and little by little he’s comingback down to earth because of improvements by defenders. He’ll still be a solid player, but i think he was starting to be overrated by fans. They expected him to keep improving at the same rate, and he’s not. Brooks has been playing well. He’s doing what he can do, fans want him to be a playmaking pg, but he’s not that. All signs point to another big deal this summer. Houston has a young talent in brooks, expirings in jefferies and battier (14 mill) and 2 nice picks from NY and possibly another good one of their own this year. Next year the starting 5 could be lowry/martin/ariza/bosh/yao

WHAT BEN SAID. I was gonna mock them for their “Money Ball, Michael Lewis-co-signed, Shane Battier is the most valuable player in the League” approach, but then I realized it’s working exactly as it was meant to — the Oakland A’s haven’t won sh*t, either.

    F*cking nerds.

yeah i hate this comment box—-the first part of that last commend was about landry, little by little he’s comingback down. there’s a reason why his playing time was controlled so tightly in houston.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

The Rockets have been losing ever since Kyle Lowry went out. This has NOTHING to do with the trade. Look at the numbers. They don’t lie.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Glad Nick pointed out Kyle Lowry’s injury.
Also, Landry’s style of play does NOT mesh with Yao’s. At all.

  • KILLAGORILLA

Haters will always be there to bring us down, but HTown is on the right track and in good hands. Is there a learning curve involved? Is the team adjusting to losing one of their biggest scorers? Yes. Losing streak aside, this team has done amazingly well this year, and to a man, is the toughest team in the NBA. AND we’re still whipping Jersey’s ass! When we get our true center back, it’s on. It will be funny to see what people say then…

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

    They miss Landry. Bad.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Granted, the guy’s not a perfect player, or even a star, but he was the Rockets best player many a night. He brought efficient scoring, and consistent energy, if not results, every night. Now I’m not saying the Rockets shoulda given him a monster extension or something, but they definitely should’ve held onto him. $3m team option? Yes, please. Living in Houston, I’ve watched a ton of Rockets games and he was their de facto “go to player” in the 4th quarter, he’s a closer… Kev Mart aint bad, but I think he’s one of those cats who got overrated for being underrated.

  • T-Money

Gimme a freaking break with Morey. The Rockets are not better than they were last year or the year before that or even during the Francis-era. Shane Battier is a mediocre NBA player, I don’t care what their data says. He has a good knowledge of the game, fine then be an asst coach. It’s not because you know what to do that you can go out there and do it. For all the “moneyball” stuff they’re doing, they’re still one superstar away from contending for a title. Doesn’t seem very revolutionary to me. If Kevin Martin is your second option, you’re not winning a title.

  • RV

yes ciolkstar, but he also had to be sub-ed out because he wasnt rebounding well…also, the last month or so he had not been doing what he did early in the year. He was being doubled and played differently. a lot of teams were figuring out how to stop him and i’m not sure he’s going to overcome that to become the 20ppg player he was earlier. He’ll adjust some to it, but prob will end up being a 15 and 8 guy, not bad, but not something you can’t find again with a high pick, which they’ll have at least this year, maybe for the next 3 yrs.

  • RV

also, i dont think they were sure they could keep him in 2011. That’s going to be a big summer for the team as they decide whether to keep yao or give up on him. I think they rather lock yao up if he works out or go all out on an all-star FA if they let yao go. Not sure thye would be willing to give Landry a significant raise for an extended period of time with his lack of rebounding and spotty defense. Scola can’t defend, but at least he rebounds.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

Please stop saying this slump is because of the trade. I’m 100% serious–and people who aren’t houstonians may not understand because they never watch this team–but the rocket’s recent losing streak is all about Kyle Lowry’s injury. He leads the team in every +/- category. Including the game where lowry got injured, the rockets are 1-6. 4 of those games, including depression-inducing losses to Philly and Miami, included Landry.

  • RV

Martin as the second option? People are really sleeping on Brooks….i do think he’s always going to have problems defending and he could improve his finishing with contact, but the guy is averaging 20 and 5, shooting 40% from three, 80% FT. He’s often compared to parker, which i thnk is a good comparison, but brooks is more perimeter efficient and oriented than Parker. FG% is the only stat TP is truly superior in. If the Rockets think brooks still has another level to go to he’ll stick around, if not he’ll be part of a package this summer for an all-star, if not next summer.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign nick. People just don’t realize how important and crucial Kyle Lowry is to the team.
However, Carl Landry leaving the Rockets hurts the team. I’m sorry, but Kevin Martin has NOT been producing the same way Landry did. Maybe he’s just getting accustomed to his new surroundings, but he has to step it up for Houston to play better basketball. Shooting 5-14 from the floor certainly doesn’t help.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Ariza is such a dumbass. He’s the Courtney Lee of the West except volunteered to go to Mediocrity-ville.

  • RV

teddy, it’s unfair to compare martin and landry’s efficieny/production. Mainly because one’s a perimeter player and the other a post player. Fans became accustomed to landry’s 20 pt games on 7 shots. Another thing is the rockets really protected landr, part of the reason why i think he was trade bait all this year. He’d only come in for 20 mins or so, most of the time in the perfect situations for him. that made him even more efficient. It’s not realistic to hope martin can even come close to that efficiency, landry may not even come close to it again in Scramento.

  • Donovan Phelan

Who on this team can create their own shot? The Rockets are a team full of role players and D-league all stars. Kevin Martin was a star on a terrible team. All he does is jack it. If he couldn’t play with tyreke how is he going to play with brooks? I can’t stand morey. All this stat geek approach to basketball is lame. Eyes don’t lie. This team is overachieving and I give adelman a lot of credit. Unfortunately they are still trash. They should just tank it and hope for a lottery pick.

  • underdog

Of course, they miss Kyle Lowry, after all, he’s the only pass-first guard on the Rockets roster.

  • RV

I think Kevin Martin (33pts), brooks (31 pts, and scola(30 pts) all want to have a word with you Donovan. Great timing.

  • http://SLAMOnline.com Adam Sweeney

Can we slow the hate train a bit? We’re literally just a week out from the trade deadline. This trade was made with the future in mind. Maybe we should give, oh, a month before we start ripping Kevin Martin? The Rockets weren’t winning the title this year anyway, and you can’t get talent without giving up talent. Be realistic, critics. Give the team time to grow, bring back Lowry and Yao, mix in the draft picks we got and then they’ll be fine.

  • therighttoremainsalient

For all the superfluous, ‘Statistical hybrid analysis’ crap Houston align themselves with, this just goes to show that “more points in the basket at one end, beats less points in the basket at the other” everytime…

  • therighttoremainsalient

@Adam Sweeney – yeah they’ll be fine, until Ming goes down with his next foot/heart injury and any sound option they had to fill the void gets traded for draft selections (that will get wasted) and Kevin Martin, who basically just fills T-Macs spot as a gingerly built wing player who doesn’t actually make anyone around him better…unless of course your refering to when he gets injured and other players get court time. Who will they actually be fine against? They’ll pretty much be the worst western conference team next season.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign RV and Adam Sweeney.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

The second last comment (above Teddy) is one of the stupidest I’ve ever seen on this site. Just go and put your head in the sand again.

  • RINGO

    Ihate you all

  • r13

Let me remind you that Barkley said on TV that they would be the worst team in the West this year. Much like nozzle-head (above Teddy) is predicting already for next year. Houston keep proving the haters wrong. As has already been said, they were never going to win the title, but they are above .500. why are people calling them trash? Only team with a winning record at the all star break, but with no all-stars in the team. What else do they have to do to prove themselves to these morons? Nothing is certain for next season, but Rockets fans know Morey is playing his cards right.
