Jameer Nelson: Not Looking Forward to Lakers/Cavs Finals

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Since the preseason, most people have assumed that L.A. and Cleveland would face off in the NBA Finals come June. Given the two teams’ respective records (and the way they’ve dominated the competition), plus some of the moves made by the front offices, there’s been little indication that the Finals forecast won’t come true.

Jameer Nelson, following yesterday afternoon’s Magic win over the Cavs in Orlando, said that his team is ready to prove everyone who penciled in a Kobe/LeBron final wrong. Nelson doesn’t forsee anyone but the Orlando Magic representing the Eastern Conference in the championship round.

FanHouse has the quotes:

“You look at the commercials now, and you’d think Cleveland and the Lakers already were in the championship [series]. I guess that’s what the fans want to see,” Nelson said Sunday after his Magic beat the Cavs, 101-95. “But I think we’re here to spoil it for the fans.”

Nelson and the Magic toppled the Cavaliers Sunday, casting some doubt into the inevitability of that Lakers/Cavs Finals, reminding everyone again that they — and not the Cavs — are the defending Eastern Conference champs.

“This [victory] means a lot,” said Nelson, who had 18 points and eight in the decisive fourth quarter. “We know we can beat them now.”

Nelson will likely get a chance to test out his theory, in the Eastern Conference Finals when both the Magic and Cavs are expected to face off in an epic duel.

Whether or not Nelson is right about spoiling the dream Finals matchup remains to be seen, but yesterday’s victory showed that his team will have a meaningful say in who gets to play for the title.

I do even know if the Lakers will make the Finals anymore! I know shocking but Denver and Dallas have the peices to beat them and Orlando has the peices to beat the Cavs. you never know

    Deju vu?

    Utah/Atlanta final!

  • Clay

    Boston Vs Denver?

  • http://www.twitter.com/NotebookNick NotebookNick

I have a strong feeling Atlanta faces the Cavs in the ECF.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

OKC is gonna give someone fits in the West and the East is toss up. Den vs. LA in the West (Dallas could slide in here too) and Cavs vs. Magic EAST (could slide in Boston here too).

  • letsmotor

no ways the hawks are getting to the ECF being the subpar road team that they are.

  • letsmotor

by the way, orlando’s not such a great road team either (only 16-13 this year compared to 27-14 last year). seems like it could really hurt them in the playoffs.

  • JBone

I don’t see how this win really showed anything for the Magic. The Cavs came in after adjusting from a trade and still trying to fit Mo and Delonte into the rotation…as well as Antawn Jamison.

I’m not saying the Magic can’t beat the Cavs in the playoffs, I’m just saying that I wouldn’t use this win as something to gauge the Magic’s playoff success.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

Playoffs is a different beast than the regular season, anything can happen, especially if you got young scrappy team, that aint got nothing to lose or play for (unlike the Cavs, Lakers, Boston, Orlando who have everything to play for!). If your a top seed or 2-3 seed in your division/conf. and find yourself down 2 games in the playoffs, LOOK OUT!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Yeah orlando is the cavs main comp right now but I still see Bron Bron leading his team over Dwight’s. In the west the only team I’m scared of for LA is Utah and Denver. Especially Denver.

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

Denver plays angry vs. the Lakers thats their only down fall. Can they pull it together for 7 Games without Artest getting under their skin? Cavs should be a little worried, but we all know Orlando and Boston are gonna be right there in the hunt in the East too…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Something is just telling me the hawks will make a run. I think they can beat Boston and Orlando in a 7 game series.

  • http://fjkld.com Jukai

    Phoenix v OKC

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

I feel you DP, OKC and the Hawks are gonna upset somebody in the playoffs, Get ready!

  • Jack Knife

Is this an article from last year?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Sorry Jameer, but Joey Crawford says otherwise.

  • Sparker

i’m feeling a dark horse this year too. charlotte? some guys who get up for the playoffs on that team. bring on the g-state remix 2010! somebody’s gotta make a run! okc or memphis?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Speaking as a Hawks fan, after yesterday’s game it wouldn’t surprise me to see them lose to Toronto or Charlotte in the first round. The Hawks at their motivated best can hang with any team, but at their lazy worst are far worse than the Celtics, Magic, or Cavs on their worst days.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

Jameer has no business even talking like that. Not coming from a second rate scrub who cost his team the finals last year by coming back and letting fish send game 4 to ot. I could have taken it from dwight after his big game last night but not from this fool.

  • Hangtime Hec

Scrub? Jammeer was the one hitting the clutch shots to win the game bailing out Carter when he couldnt get him the ball. And I JUST smell the ingredients for a upset this year. Alanta, BETcats, Charlotte, OKC. Cant WAIT for the playoffs to start.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

@ hangtime: First off, jameer isn’t as good as you think. He’s just a step above duhon. Magic played well and cavs lost but jameer didn’t win it for them, dwight and vc did.

  • T-Money

Not concerned at all by yesterday’s game. When Z comes back, they’ll be able to have a 7-footer on Dwight all game long. Twan has already proven to me that the Shard Lewis mismatch is gone. Mike Brown needs time to figure out rotations. I fully expect the Cavs to play 8-9 guys once the post season rolls around. Boobie, JJ, Powe and Jawad won’t see the floor in the postseason.

  • http://www.twitter.com/Th3_R3al_Chris Th3_R3al_Chris

Wasn’t this same exact thing posted last May?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Lakers might have a little trouble should they play the Thunder in the 1st round.. Ive noticed they have problems with teams with good small forwards.. Den. Bos. OKC. Cle. etc.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

denver is gonna fcuk siht up

  • Yesse

Well you never know. Magic might beat Cavs, but im still going with Cleveland although Magic won last night.

  • http://alan.george@gmail.com Breeze

Any of you think that the lakers are not repeating your just fooling yourself. and as for the magic over the cavs if any of you was watching you notice still even with turk gone they still have match up problems. if lewis pietrus or carter have good games with howard jameer they are pretty hard to beat in a 7 game.I do believe that atl can beat the celtics if they should play. My predictions Lakers vs Magic lakers win in 6!

  • T-Money

Denver is looking good too. But they’re always one injury away to one of their top 8 guy from being irrelevant.

  • Rob

    are we in 2009?

  • http://eric.erpelo@gmail.com airs

wait wait i saw love for charlotee, and NOT chicago??
    how can this be.
maybe its vinny’s fault but cmon, bulls pushed the celts to 7, and i think if we get em again (which im hoping) we finish it this time.
but not past cleveland. oh well

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com ClutchPerformer

like it has been said b4 there will be an upset, just by the way these teams play , they are scrapy and pull wins out of the ying yang

  • LetsGetIt

only reason why magic beat them last season is because cavs had no big man that could defend Rashard Lewis on the perimeter. thats what they brought Jamison in for. and now magic dont have Hedo so do the math

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

The next few weeks are gonna show whether the Hawks are pretenders or contenders. For the 1st half of the season, I was willing to accept them as among the east’s elite & a probable upset against Boston if they met in the playoffs. We’ll see how they react now that the time has come for the real players to ramp it up.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

“we know we can beat them *now*” is such a weak line. So you weren’t confident before you guys won that game by 2 points?

  • ab_40

I hope boston becomes 4th and gives cleveland a run for their money or even beats them.

don’t you think mo and delonte got flashbacks? orlando owns mo williams and VC is gonna destroy delonte and parker in a 7 game series. he’s slowly gettin healthier look at the dunks vs cleveland and the other one vs dalls. I love it when VC dunks.

  • boogster

oh well, we don`t really know until we see it, do we? I`d be happy if any team from SE division ( of course, apart from wiz) making it to the finals, HOWEVER would love to see Shaqlump and Bron get their backside smacked by YOU KNOW WHO (not lord voldemort)

  • boogster

c`mon let my comment pass, there`s nothing to moderate in it.

  • james

man i want anyone to win but denver or cleveland

  • thalilbigkahuna

Probably talking ish and making Lebron angry is not the best idea. Just sayin.

Ab40 – letsgett – Hangtime – read what you guys wrote you f()cking idiots!!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

do the magic really think they’re winning the east again? With a healthy Kage in Boston and a much much improved cavs team?

  • luke

@ CB 34 Yeah Jameer just a step above Duhon right..that’s why he was an All Star last year and ever since has had to recover from a season ending injury.Idiots like this shouldn’t post on here.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This season for the Orlando Magic depends on VC. Turkugulu wasn’t a better player than VC but he was consistent. Thing with VC is he has games where he’ll score like 20 and than next game he has a 1-12 performance for like 3 games. This team needs VC to get to the line, hit his shots and get 20 every night. It all depends on Carter if he plays bad in the first round they can easily lose if he plays good they will sweep. But if there is one person that can cost them the title or even making the ECF its Carter but hes also the guy that can help them win it all.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

dont get me wrong.. the magic are a really good team… maybe 4th or 5th in entire L.. I just dont see them winning the east again.. @ luke. I havent read all the comments in here but your right. Nelson is wayy beyond Duhon. Duhon is a decent 6th man. but will probably never be a starter unless hes on a desprite team (knicks).

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Powe is really good, T-Money. He should be the Cavs’ secret weapon if they know how to use him right, and if he’s healthy.

  • Shem

A lot of people will HATE this comment but Orlando isn’t better then Boston. I’m the biggest Boston hater alive. I’m a die hard Raps fan so I’m sure you guys cae see why but the experience and knowledge of the game Boston has + the team they have built AROUND the big 3 is pretty scary.. The big 3 turned into the big 5. Perk and Rondo are all of a sudden incredibly good, Big Baby is all of a sudden a great bench player etc. Boston can beat Orlando although they may be struggling, I don’t think they’re out just yet

  • Hangtime Hec

What did I write that needed moderating ?

  • kudos

Let’s be real, the cavs added a player(Jamison) who might have instant offence, but lacks a defensive mentality. Just cuz someone puts up numbers doesnt mean anything, it just means he’s taking shots from another player. Lebron doesn’t know what to do on a stacked team, every player needs the ball a few times to get any kind of rhythm. It’s like you guys just walking into the gym, getting picked up and given the ball on the last shot to win the game. Make it or not, you wished you threw up some shots before hand. Playing on a team with a ballhog(LEBRON-a forward who also plays pg and sg for his team) won’t give you that chance.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Magic players are dumbasses. They need a 6-point win (making the season series 2-1) to let them sleep at night? Cavs pretty much restarted their season, similar to their early season struggles with rotations and minutes.
However, if we keep missing 10958349082390432 free throws, Magic have a chance.

  • Al29

There is no way Boston can beat Atlanta in a series.

  • http://slamonline.com CB 34

@ Luke: You are the idiot if you think jameer is more that a step above duhon. They gave him the all star slot last year when it should have gone to rondo or harris. Jameer ain’t sh!t. Idiot!

Hornets and blazers in the west !

  • Justin

One win and Nelson thinks they’re ready to win a 7 game series? What an idiot

  • therighttoremainsalient

I think there is substance to this win. Cleveland make some trade noise that affects their solidarity and chemistry. Regardless of how great LeBron is, and how dominant Shaq is proving to be this season. They are, for all effective purposes, a new team. It will be interesting to see just where they are at the end of the month. Chemistry wise. Orlando are certainly close knit nowadays. Its going to be interesting… Go Magic!

  • Shaqsbuddy

Everyone knows Lebron doesnt turn it up till playoffs then hes from another world
