Knicks Looking at T-Mac for the Long-Term?

Donnie Walsh says he wouldn’t acquire Tracy McGrady for a short period of time (like everyone assumes), making me wonder if he’s actually seen T-Mac play basketball over the last two years: “Knicks president Donnie Walsh said a misperception exists that his interest in the Rockets’ Tracy McGrady is solely as a rental to inject life into a dying season. ‘There’s reasons other than that,’ Walsh told The Post. Walsh declined to specify, but a source said the Knicks would like to see if McGrady is someone to consider re-signing in July. At least they’d have a fallback candidate if McGrady excels and they are unable to land one of the top free agents, LeBron James or Dwyane Wade. The other four top free-agent candidates are Joe Johnson, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer and Amar’e Stoudemire. McGrady once was considered in those players’ class before microfracture surgery on his left knee last year. ‘I think he’s a very good player,’ Walsh said. ‘The microfracture surgery is a concern for everybody. But he’s a good player … I’ve been realistic about these first two years and I’m not doing this for immediate satisfaction.”‘

Well, I think T-Mac would not be asking for a large contract after his present one. If he plays for the Knicks the rest of the season and excels, it could even make a big name free-agent think more seriously about joining the Knicks. Just my two cents.

the sad thing is I believe that the best mcgrady can do is be like grant hill. Both still have a lot of skill and talent, but not what they used to be. Smart move for the knicks. Mcgrady, like hill, had tremendous athletic ability. But both of them had TOP LEVEL basketball IQ and shootin ability. So tmacs career isn’t necessarily OVER.

Aging Tmac+lee+reliable pg+ possible fa star= legit playoff contenders. They don’t even need a star. At least a raja bell, mike miller type player will boost the knicks. Also the knicks should really try for marcus camby

Of course this will happen…everyone hoping for Lebron and they end up signing busted TMac to a long term deal…when will the kincks learn!

  • GetEm

Yea definetly not a good call unless T-mac is willing to sign to a veterans min. which is unlikely.

  • Jose

if t-mac can get up to at least 15-18 a game that’ll be a good deal if they resign him for wat should be a small deal

  • Pwilly Alldilly

i like this deal alot if they can get a 3 year contract on him and use him as a 6th man or even in the starting lineup he still has an amazing jump shot he can fill the bucket with a nnice 12-15 points

Well, losing in the first round of the playoffs would be a longer season for the Knicks. Is this what they menat by long term?

“making me wonder if he’s actually seen T-Mac play basketball over the last two years.” Has anyone seen T-Mac play basketball over the last two years?

Sounds like knick front office thinking hasn’t changed. Sign an aging vet with a predetermined notion to slack on defense? The new york knicks where “nothing” happens

My opinion, mac’s a bum….. He has been no more then an ‘average’ two since leaving Orlando… He wont help the Knicks, he will be injured 10 games in…

McGrady, I think, hasn’t been hungry since that playoff debacle against Detroit when he was in Orlando. He was never the same player. Now if he feels he has something to prove, it’s worth the gamble for any team in the League. It is a gamble. But he’s still young enough to pull it off. In all honesty, McGrady is among the great pure talents in League history. The question to me is, does Tracy feel he has anything to prove? That’s huge.

Actually looking to trade for a player that they plan on keeping around for awhile…not to mention its T-Mac??? Thats what i like to hear!

walsh is just saying this to not make mcgrady feel like an expiring contract, and if brought to the knicks, motivate him to contribute.
how would any player feel if he knows for sure that he will leave?

  • T-Money

Isiah was clearly the problem, NYK has made very sound personnel decisions since his departure.

    Man, I like T-money.

The Hoopistani is right. The Knicks would only give T-Mac a deal for the right price.
