Larry Hughes and His Beard: Still Mad

In case anyone was still keeping track, or cared in the least: “Apparently, the veteran guard has no plans of trimming his facial hair until he is traded, released or is playing regularly again for the Knicks, the latter of which Hughes is convinced will never happen. ‘I’m not going to play,’ he said in a whisper. ‘I know that.’ Hughes seems more distraught and confused than angry following a month that saw him log 15 minutes over two games. Hughes’ fate seemed clear over the weekend when Mike D’Antoni curiously played Jonathan Bender ahead of him with the team’s best reserve, Al Harrington, sidelined with a sore left knee. Sure, Hughes may not be an All-Star but there is little doubt that he could provide more than Bender. In consecutive road losses to the lowly duo of Washington and Minnesota, Bender shot a combined 0-for-5. While Harrington rested, the Knicks’ bench scored a total of 31 points against the Wizards and Timberwolves on 12-for-43 shooting. Hughes was the only available Knick who didn’t play. ‘(My frustration) is as high as it’s going to get,’ he said. ‘I can’t get any more frustrated than I already am.”’

Mike D is whack… Tell me the Knicks aren’t tanking.

You field your best team whenever possible, and clearly, the Knicks fail to do that, regardless of how mediocre their best might be.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

It’s like D’Antoni can only keep track of minutes for seven players at a time. Eight if it’s a good night. I don’t understand how he can hold so many grudges for so long, and how nobody says anything about it in the media.
He is constantly jerking dude’s around when it comes to minutes, and that’s always a problem in the league.

  • kh

I think Steph could use a runningmate over in China.

  • L

The problem is, he thinks he’s still coaching in Italy, pushing a bunch of Euros around. I just don’t think that flies with the modern NBA player. There are too many egos to manage in the L compared to Europe. The only reason he got the Suns to cooperate were Steve Nash, and the fact that he was an assistant before taking over as the interim the year before the Coach of the Year award.

If Mike D would have fielded the best team possible last year, the Knicks would have made the playoffs.I honestly think that the lineup changes are coming from the front office because they want a high caliber teammate(John Wall) to entice LeBron to go to the Big Apple next year.

I’m really starting to dislike Mike D. And all the people who say “he plays people who help him win” no way is Hughes worse than Duhon. And if you’re not gonna play him at least throw Douglas in the fire and let him learn. F*ck.

  • L

Forget Duhon Bryan… There’s NO chance that Hughes is worse than Bender… Someone who’s been out of the league for a period of time. That’s ridiculous. The only reason Bender has a contract is because Walsh has a man crush on him.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Aside from the fact that Hughes and Nate are the only two guys who are capable of creating offense on their own I can’t imagine what the probably could be.

  • LA Huey

We don’t know what goes on in house. Larry “I had more fun losing in Chicago than winning in Cleveland” Hughes is not the type of player I would give the benefit of the doubt. I hope he continues to challenge Deshawn for the title of “Garbage player with stupid beard”

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

FREE LARRY HUGHES!!! I’m not shaving until he plays, either. Then I’ll continue not shaving. Power, brother.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

D’Antoni is nuts. Jordan Hill, Nate Robinson, and Larry Hughes can all vouche for me on this one.

  • Jdubbs

I’ve seen bad contracts, but it’s amazing that one team has all of them.

I like Hughes, though. He was great in Washington for a couple of years, and he sure turned that into a huge contract.

  • Tommy Patron

The offense Hughes creates on his own sucks. Hughes has been lousy for years.

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

Good point tommy patron you said it so it must be true. Question though, how many knicks can put the ball on the floor and make something happen other than Hughes?

  • Tommy Patron

By “make something happen” you must mean a forced jump shot. I think the last time Hughes put the ball on the floor to get a teammate a shot was his rookie year. Please note that passing the ball to a teammate because there are only a couple seconds remaining on the shot clock and you have no other option does not count for our purposes here.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

tommy must have ingested a pint of his surname

  • luv2ball

Mike D did the same thing in Phoenix; he stuck with a seven, sometimes eight man rotation. He has never trusted his bench.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    luv2ball
Yeah, we know. But, Steph was the problem.

  • UnRel

growing out a beard in protest?.. at least by the time he gets moved.. his game won’t be the only thing he has that’s ugly..

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Co-agin Bryan, Mike needs to play Toney Douglas. And Larry Hughes can at least help the team.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Hmmm that comment awaits moderation?

  • Dallas Stokes

Sorry it had to be said and I’m gonna look like a racist but Mike D better be glad he aint a black coach or he’d be recruiting high school seniors as we speak. I’m just saying his piss poor job to this point is a bigger joke to the league than the NBA skills competition and the one year in college rule. Sorry, I just had to say it, trust me I’m not racist but look at the facts…

  • Dallas Stokes

And as far as the Suns. I could coach a team that good on Playstation and get the same if not better results. I think its more than obvious. On the road to the titles and diamond rings. Real coaches do real things.

  • MikeC.

I’m going to keep growing my beard until Larry Hughes stops sucking so much. Larry has sucked for awhile, as my beard can attest. http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/science/beard3.jpg

  • Shem

    Hes been garbo since chicago

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

The Knicks suck so bad they can’t even tank right. You put your #1 man on the IL, dude. Not your #7 guy. Ask Pop. He knows how it’s done. How’s your… wait, what did you injure again, Admiral?

  • MikeC.

Robinson hurt his back, came back to play in a handful of games, and broke his foot. That’s hardly a tank job.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

    They tanked.

  • MikeC.

When D-Rob was out of the season, maybe they decided to “shut er down” and go for a high pick. It’s not like they decided to put a perfectly healthy Dave on the shelf for the season on the off chance that they’d get Duncan, when they could have easily ended up with a Van Horn or Mercer crap sandwich for their troubles.

  • Loqui

They’re not tanking cause their is no pick. Larry Hughes sucks and shoots like 32% and D’Antoni has been playing Hill. If anything Mike has been too lenient with those chuckers.

  • chintao

Yeah… it’s important for the Knicks to tank, so that whichever team it is that holds their first round pick this year can get an even better player. Wait – maybe no one told D’Antoni that he has no pick? As I have said from the beginning, Mikey D is not the right man for the job. Still, it’s so much worse than I ever imagined it might be. Not only is he losing, but he is alienating his players (both current and potential), one-by-one. When the 2010-2011 season starts, I would not be surprised to see Jared Jeffries and four randoom guys from The Cage down on W. 4th starting. How can else can they fill-out the roster?

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

Allenp: I’ve been saying this for years. I’ve been saying this since 2005. D’Antoni is an awful, awful coach.
You know what I saw Gentry do?
I saw him tell his team to FOUL a player and send to the line when that player needed three points to tie the game.
You know how many times I’ve seen D’Antoni call up a smart play like that?
    Zero.
Once if you count David Lee’s .2 second tip-in at the buzzer, but I have doubts D’Antoni drew anything up there.
Dude has a great offensive scheme, but that’s all this guy should have been done… been an offensive coordinator. The coaching is a joke.

  • nastierthanu

When did the high scorer of the mcdonalds game become a knick?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jukai
Yeah, I’m coming that way of thinking. He’s the Norv Turner of the NBA.

  • Loqui

David Lee tip in was years ago before Mike was coach. Fouling instead of giving up the 3 is something he’s done with the suns so…..
The Knicks dont even run ssol, he’s had to dumb it down for the players. their defense has gotten better than it has been the last 5 seasons.
Yeah they’re in a 3 game losing streak but that’s what crappy teams go through. All the up and downs of the season are hard for a team with no star.

  • http://www.funplayonline.com Fun play online

Well, as long as he’s happy… who cares about his beard?

  • Steve

Why is anyone making the claim that the Knicks are tanking to get John Wall (or any other draft pick)? The Knicks don’t have a first-round draft pick, so there probably isn’t another claim that could make you sound any more ignorant of a Knicks fan. The Knicks aren’t tanking–they just aren’t good.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

I’m glad someone else is in the Mike D’an sucks club with me, Jukai. He’s a clown.
