Will Phil Jackson Sit Injured Kobe?

Yeah, good luck with that, coach: “Kobe Bryant has ignored his ever-thickening medical file, playing through a broken finger, strained elbow, back spasms and, most recently, a sprained left ankle. But it might be time for him to sit a game or two, a thought that crossed Phil Jackson’s mind while the Lakers’ coach watched him hobble around the court Wednesday against the Charlotte Bobcats. ‘It occurred to me yesterday during the course of that game,’ Jackson said a day after Bryant had only five points, his lowest total since a January 2005 game against Cleveland in which he scored two points before being carried off the court because of a severely sprained ankle. This ankle injury isn’t nearly as bad, but it’s the latest in a line of maladies that have plagued Bryant since he sustained a broken right index finger Dec. 11. Bryant was unavailable for comment Thursday. He has not missed a game because of injury since Dec. 6, 2006, against Atlanta (sprained right ankle) and is not expected to sit out Friday night against Denver.”

My fav player…But sit him out Phil, he broke tha record give him a couple games off to get right

  • james

kobes gonna regret all of this in a few years. its gonna take a good few years off his career

  • cramzy

yeah, kobe need to chill a little bit. Its not like we’ll think any less of him. We know he’s a warrior. Heal up

  • taylor

Hes not going to regret anything because hes selfish and hes obviously doing this for the personal accolades.

  • kh

I’d rather see him sit a few games now, when it doesn’t mean as much. This is where he needs to check his ego and let his body heal.

  • michael scorn

All-Star break is coming up soon, he can rest then.

  • Brando

Kobe should rest….the lakers will make the playoffs take it easy man get ready for when it matters

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/media/slam-tv/2010/02/video-taj-gibson-dunks-on-chris-kaman/ oinestep

the man is at the tail end of his career so how can it take a few years off of it? he’s playing so many games because he knows he’s at the end and wants to cherish each moment………he has unquenchable thirst for the game just like jordan, that’s why he came back for the second time because of that thirst.

  • Yesse

He really should do that. Lakers would just have to worry about making the playoffs and get Kobe back there before he get’s career ending problems.

  • http://www.thecomfortofyourseat.blogspot.com twahc

it might be a test for the lakers to play without kobe. so far we still see that kobe is carrying the team.

  • LA Huey

It’s already bad enough the Spurs and Cs probably won’t be at full strength when it counts this year, I’m going to be mad if the Kobe’s not healthy for the Lake Show in May.

  • underdog

Kobe shouldn’t force it. It’s not like the Lakers gunnin’ for the 8th seed. Maybe he could sit out the ASG. Stern would be furious.

  • UnRel

@taylor.. becuase he was really missing a 5 point game from his personal accolade trophy case.. i’ve heard him say that he owes it to the people that pay to see him play.. i believe that.. but he does need to scale it down a bit.. and heal..

  • http://www.inbox.lv smiles

cosign taylor. any other superstar(deron, paul, lebron or wade) if traded for kobe would make that lakers team unbeatable I repeat unbeatable with all these assets they have(Bynum,Gasol,Odom,Artest)
But kobe just keeps shooting contested jumpers(most probably to become all time leading scorer)…what a punk

  • T-Money

controversial stance: trade lebron for kobe straight up and the cavs are a middle of the pack eastern conf team while the lakers break the 72 wins record and win at least the next 3 ‘ships.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/media/slam-tv/2010/02/video-taj-gibson-dunks-on-chris-kaman/ oinestep

    doubt it

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

He’s also playing with a sprained vagina.

  • http://www.inbox.lv smiles

I’m not a hater,I have been watching him since his early days in the league and I admire some parts of his game but to be true kobe is just plain fake and straight poison(obviosly not surprised about the choice of his nickname)even la natives know it but don’t wanna realize it, doubt his teammates like him much too
so I hope kobe bryant gets a good rest, treats his injuries and then gets traded for paul ASAP so that everyone can see what worth actually he is
on a high note – with the hornets kobe will add an accolade – the first to average over 50% of team shots during 3 seasons, another 3peat for Kobe
there really is no comparison with Lebron, not

  • http://www.inbox.lv smiles

he’s a determined Vince Carter in a great situation

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

Phil needs to rest him through all-star weekend. The foot and back can only get worse if he pushes it too soon – the rest will do him good. The finger will just have to work it’s course, not sure what rest can do for it. However, for the long-term success of the season, Kobe needs to sit a few.

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

Phil needs to grow a pair and decide. Kobe may want to play for the fans, for the passion or maybe just for his own ego. But at the end of the day, it’s Phil’s decision to make.

  • what

Even though the Lakers have some tough games coming up, I think this would be a good test for the rest of the team to figure out the significance of their roles while Kobe sits. Maybe the bench steps up, Pau and Bynum try and create chemistry, stuff like that. This team has enough talent to beat almost any other team in the league, even without Kobe. These are regular season games, the real war comes around with the playoffs.

  • Vuk

smiles and taylor need to stop writing stuff cuz you both clearly dont know what ur talking about, kobe does take contested jumpers and yet how many buzzer beaters has the guy made to put his team ahead this year? wades shooting percentage is basically the same as kobes … all i know is that if it comes down to it and lakers are doen 2-3 points near the end of the game there isnt a single player in this league, or for that matter the history of the league(except jordan or reggie) that id want to take that final shot over kobe, and thats why he will end his career a laker, because mitch kupchak actually knows what hes doing as a gm and the lakers organizatipon has more then proven them selves to know what theyre doing when it comes to build a championship team

so please dont shit talk a player just bacause your a kobe hater, theres already too many of those, i dont know what else kobe has to do to quiet all of you

ive watched kobe since he came in the league and the kobe 10 years ago compared to this kobe doesnt even compare, yes kobe before use to force up shots, now he settles for getting his team involved, if kobe was playing for him self he could easily average 35 pts plus and fill the stat sheet but there is no need for him to because hes got a great team around him

lakers will beat cavs in the ‘ship game and then maybe people will finally stop talking sh*t about the best player in the league since MJ

  • T-Money

”yes kobe before use to force up shots, now he settles for getting his team involved” (roll of the eyes) dude leads the league in shots per game. i don’t know where this ”kobe getting his teammates involved” myth came to life…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/media/slam-tv/2010/02/video-taj-gibson-dunks-on-chris-kaman/ oinestep

I guess Kobe has to get 8 rings for the kobe hating to cease and can we stop calling lebron the king before he even wins a championship…….he’s great and all but cmon son let the man win before you give him so much props………get off his (explicit comment)

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/media/slam-tv/2010/02/video-taj-gibson-dunks-on-chris-kaman/ oinestep

What if the “King” doesnt get any rings??????? Will he be better then Kobe then?

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

oinestep … lol if you don’t know this site. they bash Kobe because they literally WANTS BRONS NUTZ IN THEIR MOUTH. They do this man.. get use to it. To them Kobe is no better then Redd, or any other okay scorer.

  • heartlandG

Kobe > LeBron… When Lebron get a ring he shouldnt be mentioned w Kobe <–Greatest playin even hurt lol

  • T-Money

i don’t understand the correlation between being the best player in the league and being the best player on the team that wins the championship. different topics. was kg the best player in the league 2 years ago? when you want to judge careers, yeah talk about rings. if you want to know who’s the best in the nba right now, just look at the games. it’s not even that close.

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

Kobe needs to sit down for a few weeks to get those injuries healed up. The Lakers have enough talent to stay at the top of the West so I dont know what hes worrying about. Its better for him to sit out now instead of having something bad happen in the playoffs.

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

It’s funny how so many post lead to Kobe -v- LBJ debates. LBJ haters will always say Kobe and vice versa. Use individual stats or what ever you want but please leave rings out of the debate. Rings don’t have any factor on who the better player is. All a ring reflects is who’s part of better teams. Michael Jordan is tied for 10th for players with the most rings – does that make him around the 10th best ever? Jordan Farmar has more rings than several hall of famers – does that automatically mean he’s a hall of famer himself? It’s just silly how people bring ‘team’ rings into the ‘individual talent’ debates. Personally I think Kobe was better 3-4 years ago and LBJ was better last season as well as this one. I know this is off-topic post but just thought I’d add my .02 worth.

  • LA Huey

NUPE, it is amusing. It’s like with SLAMOnline commenters, Kobe/LBJ discussions are probably just as much a no-no in the workplace as religion and politics.

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

    lmfao Anton! haha!

  • rob

He should, and Kobe should agree. Time to see if Kobe is as smart as I think he is.

  • rob

Well, he won’ sit. So stubborn…

  • http://dsjfhklf.com Jukai

    Classic Kobe.
33 points on 50% shooting. Classic Kobe.
0 assists and 5 turnovers. Classic Kobe.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Kobe Bryant is NOT a point guard. Who cares if he’s getting assists. A shooting guard is supposed to shoot and if you’re as good a scorer as he is, SHOOT. SCORE. Man its annoying when people call out a proven winner and a great scorer because his assists aren’t higher than LeBron’s.
Woops, I just brought LeBron into this now, didn’t I?
But for real, let the scorers score and the passers pass. “Brook, do what you do best.” If players can do both (which Kobe can) its a bonus, but I’d rather have a healthy prime Bernard King on my team than Rajon Rondo, if you know what I mean.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Rings are important but dictate very little about individual ability, unless your name is Hakeem Olajuwon.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

^Calm down, purple and gold homer. None of this will be covered in the Post Up, unless 24 does a buzzer-beater on a scrub team to help himself sleep another night.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

LMFAO AT Anton, sprained vagina… i like kob, but this sh1t is too much, if he was injured he would not play, this is media sh1t, and he rolls along as the mighty worrior, he tough, but his injuries are not serious, only saw him play injured 2 times this year, at SanA and Dallas

  • http://www.inbox.lv smiles

@vuk: have you ever thought about the reason kobe hits those game winners from time to time, that’s for the simple fact he puts his team in a situation like that all the time by shooting the same kind of jumpers all game long which results in his team underperforming cos they’re out of rhythm
and, please, stop bringing that “he’s the only player I would like to have ball when the game is on the line” weak sh1t
again for the simple fact bron in most cases finishes off an opponent during the middle of the fourth so that there’s no need for freakin last second heroics
once again I’m not a kobe hater, just see it the way I see it and kobe to me is fake

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I’m not a purple and gold homer, Anton. I’m not even a Laker fan.
On the flip side, take that LeBron James poster out of your pants and please, dry that sh!t up before putting it back on your wall. We all know Cleveland sucks. Just ask Mike Polk.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    Just kidding, Cleveland is alright.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I probably like the Cavs more than the Lakers, actually.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    And I like LeBron James…
Yeah, that comeback didn’t really work out the way I planned.

  • rob

Jukai I’m sure you didn’t even watch the game, Kobe was passing, a lot, if Gasoftie and the rest had made their shots kobe would’ve had, at least, 7 assists, but they didn’t, they sucked yesterday, Kobe has to play with back spasms, a strained elbow, a fractured finger and a swollen ankle to keep the Lakers competitive.
The Lakers are defending like a bunch of p*ssies.

  • nastierthanu

@every kobe hater. Just stop. Stop the bs hatin stop the comparisons and enjoy the mans body of work. He’s a modern day Bob Gibson. He’s not everybody’s friend. He’s not Dan Marino giving his teammates isotoner gloves. He’s a baller. Here’s 1 thing, hater or not that we can all agree on, HE’S A 1st ballot HOF. This cat doesn’t take days off. Didn’t he win a gold medal as well. How pissed were all of us with a bs loss to puerto rico. So many superstars wouldn’t play wouldn’t dedicate themselves to the olympic team. Give this man his due. Kobe take the time off u earned it.

  • michael scorn

the problem is, if the lakers win just one game without kobe, lebron will be handed the mvp right then

  • Ricky G

anton – you made my day with the sprained…. comment!

  • chintao

Bob Gibson would literally slap nastierthanu if he popped that junk in his presence. Gibson is so real it hurts. There is nothing on or about Kobe that has not been manicured and massaged for consumption by the media. Kobe is merely a product, not a player. Also, this injury just proves that normal ankles are not made to support such massive egos.
