Andrew Bogut Breaks Down the C.O.Y Race

Bogut tells the Journal Sentinel that it’s down to his own coach and the guy in OKC: “If the Bucks can keep it going until the end of the regular season, the 46-year-old Skiles will be a leading candidate for coach of the year honors. Also considered a strong contender is Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks, who has presided over a dramatic turnaround with a Thunder team that won only 23 games last season but already has 42 victories this season. Others in contention could be Utah’s Jerry Sloan, Phoenix’s Alvin Gentry and Charlotte’s Larry Brown. ‘Any time you’ve got a team that is picked last in their conference by every so-called expert, and with what he’s got out of our team with no all-stars, I think he’s definitely the coach of the year, not being biased,” said Bucks center Andrew Bogut. ‘To be fair, I think it’s down to Brooks and Skiles for coach of the year. I don’t see anybody else really contending for that. When you compare rosters, they’re probably the two best coaches.’ The Thunder does have an all-star player and emerging superstar in 21-year-old forward Kevin Durant. The closest thing the Bucks have to an all-star is the 7-foot Bogut, who was bypassed during the selection process this season.”

He’s right. But I think it’ll go to that guy in OKC.

the west is way tougher than the east so Brooks deserves it.

  • Ken

And for the record, Bogut deserved the ASG berth more than David Lee.

you can almost say Bogut is stating the obvious. But yeah, I’d go with Brooks and Skiles as a close runner-up.

give it to sloan.. only because, for some strange reason, he’s never gotten it.. and it’ll be foolish to wait too long or never reward him with it.. kind of like entering chick hearn in the basketball hall of fame a year after he died..

  • paolo

Weird that he is not mentioning McMillan and his injury prone Blazers, they are on the brink of .600

  • peter

Is it weird that skiles and brooks are pretty much interchangeable in my mind?

  • smiles

    Unrel,
it’s ridiculous to think sloan is bothered even a bit with getting COY, he’s in the hall of fame and he’s never won one, that say’s a lot… not to mention how many COYs have been shown the door the year after getting it, the award is cheap

  • ThatGuy

    Mike Woodson

  • David

Sloan. The Jazz are way better than expected.

  • The Philosopher

Facts are facts. The Bucks have zero all stars. They’re playing for the championship in the playoffs. Skiles is the Coach of the Year.

  • UnRel

@smiles.. i’m with you on that.. and he probably can care less about COY.. but that shouldn’t be a reason not to give love and recognition to great coaches..

Unrel, like I said, he’s been shown major love by getting in the HOF, I believe that’s top honor you get and IMO COY is quite similar to MIP award which is nice, but nothing of real significance, so If Sloan wins it’ll be an event, if he doesn’t – nobody will care much

Brooks, Woodson, Skiles, or Jerry Sloan. And of course, Greg Popovich, though we know he isn’t going to be pick–despite him deserving to win almost every year.
Personally, I’d like to see Sloan win a Coach of the Year because he’s been top 3 BEST coaches in the league for two decades. They really need to give him his props instead of going with the best young/new coaches that turn teams around. How about coaches like Greg P. who consistently do a great job with their teams?

  • http://philaflava.blogspot.com/ Teddy-the-Bear

Ken, come on now. David Lee > Andrew Bogut.

  • Justin

Whether the COY means much isn’t the point. The fact that Sloan hasn’t won at least once is a total travesty

  • The Philosopher

For NBA historical records, Sloan probably should have gotten one by now. Being with one organization for longer than anyone in the history of pro sports, and what not. But, this year it’s Skiles.
