Paul Pierce and the Celtics Hearing Boos

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Paul Pierce has played on some pretty awful Celtics teams in his career, teams that were used to hearing the boo birds from their own crowd. Last night, during a 20-point drubbing at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies, those terrible memories came flooding back into Paul’s mind.

The Boston faithful were less than pleased with the team’s effort, and considering the season-long frustration with everything that’s happened to the Celtics, it was not surprising to hear the frustration being voiced.

The Boston Globe captured Pierce’s reaction to the crowd’s hostility:

“Yeah it surprises me,” said Pierce. “You come out on your home court, get this kind of loss, and get booed by your home court I haven’t been on a court where we’ve been booed … it’s been a couple times this year.

It’s been about five or six years since I’ve seen that. We’re still 17 games over .500. All the fans want is a constant effort night in and night out. I think we gotta be more consistent with that regardless of if we win or lose.”

Head coach Doc Rivers believes, that despite his preference not to do so, it may finally be time to make changes with his rotations. Exactly what those changes are, remains to be seen.

The C’s are currently tied with Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Playoff race for third place, but newcomer Rasheed Wallace isn’t quite ready to sound the alarm yet. He’s seen a lot worse during his time in the League. Not exactly the most hopeful message, but it’s better than outright panic.

I’ve been booing them for years….

  • Sparty’s Law

I’ve been actively booing the Celtics for the better part of the last 26 years. Its about time the good people of Boston saw the light.

  • http://fdksjlf.com Jukai

I love Boston as a city, it is a fantastic place
But the Boston Celtics fans are a bunch of front running douchebags

  • http://slamonline.com Anjoe Intal

this also happened to the lakers last christmas game.. oh oh..

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/03/paul-pierce-and-the-celtics-hearing-boos/ L

@Anjoe they were booing the Cavs not the Lakers. I was thare but I know what you mean

  • juanbatugan2

start the bashing… cavs and lakers fans…

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

They’re just acting like the players. Paul, KG, and Rondo talk trash all the time, so your fans can’t talk trash to you when you get blown out by Memphis?

  • vtrobot

they deserved to get booed last night. hey, we’re not all front running d-bags. some of us love the sport. some of us loved watching and supporting this team when it was the sh*tty young RR, young Perk, Waltah, Gomes, Delonte, Ricky Buckets, teams. some of us loved Jiri Welsh! WHAT!?! just kidding, wasn’t a big Jiri fan. we’re not going to drop off that much with RR and Perk being so young, but we will support this team when we’re not as good in 4 years. the whole frontrunning fanbase argument is dumb. what great team in history didn’t have the most fans at the height of its greatness. it will be interesting to see if what the C’s have left will be better than the best effort they’ll see from young teams in the playoffs. rondo might go off again.

What have you done for me lately?

    Co sign Jukai.

  • Ree Roe

@ jukai, I agree. The homie Mike Bibby was right when he called them all out for being fairweather fans. Good to see the Celtics failure continue…I wonder why I ain’t see SLAM Magazine’s favorite asshole, Kevin Garnett, yappin at Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph or any other Grizzlies last night. Go Hawks!

  • LA Huey

Good thing Big Baby wasn’t there.

  • Micahel Scorn

Maybe they should touch each other more.

  • letsmotor

the C’s played like garbage last night, and you have to feel for the fans who spent hard-earned money to see them lose by 20. still, booing is a little much. they already looked discouraged as hell, how’s booing supposed to help? i really wonder what’s going on with the C’s in a game like this. i mean, they sort of burnt out in the playoffs last year, so are they trying to conserve energy now? i mean, did you see the games against LA? THose games showed what they’re capable of, and THAT was true celtic defense. Why can’t that team come out more often?

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

lol@ Ree roe. I bet KG was yappin just for the hell of it. He would probably say something like, “Wait til next time we face you..” LOLLL

  • vtrobot

i think KG said some naughty things to b. jennings as they were leaving the court the other night. sorry brandon. sorry milwaukee. sorry NBA. sorry true fans of the game. when a team plays horribly and appears to give absolutely no effort, the DEFINITELY deserved to get booed. sorry C’s. hope you f*cking feel better. please don’t count out the C’s just yet. KG is going to get a new old-man walker for the playoffs.

  • jumpman3224

Remember when the C’s used to have Kevin Garnett. They were scary with him.

  • rashado

    this made my day.

  • The Philosopher

At the end of the day, the Celtics aging quickly. And they don’t have the same fire as they did when they won the title. When they won that year, they seemed to be high on adrenaline all year. This year it’s not there, I don’t think.

  • Ree Roe

@ NiQ, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!! lol KG’s a f’n clown

  • http://www.teflinprague.com SAB

what’s their destiny here? #4 seed, limp past Bucks, swept by Cavs?

  • madis

    lol @ TADOne

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    No post up anymore?

  • Logues

hopefully this makes the cs play better, i still got faith in them that they can win it all. and its funny how many ppl just keep bashing kg, like now that hes gettting old and cant play as good, but im sure yall were all over his nuts when he was in minny and won the chip with the cs. he’s been trash talkin his whole career. u guys all sound just like the celtics fans that your hating on

  • d’bri

Jukai and Ree Roe, so as a fan, it’s wrong to voice displeasure when a team completely lays down and doesn’t compete? you two are out of your mind. i was booing my TV last night, the Cs didn’t compete. it’s one thing to lose a game like Mil, but that effort was unacceptable. if the team is going to give a big f**k you to fans by laying down, why cant we do the same in return? I think fans in general understand the nature of injuries and weaknesses, but god almighty, the Grizzles ran a lay up line last night and no one gave a sh*t.

  • Hangtime Hec

    MIAMI HEAT 2006=BOSTON CELTICS 2008

  • http://slamonline.com John D

Jukai, I don’t know if you saw the game, but when a team puts out an effort as weak as the Celtics did last night, the fans have every right to boo.

  • celticshomie

wait a minute, didn’t the cavs and lakers lose to much worse teams this season, like the bobcats, raptors, bulls, wizards, and the bucks?

  • Rob

those boos are music to my ears.

  • d’bri

celticshomiem they’ve also had prolonged periods of success. Cs look terrible at the wrong time of year.

  • vtrobot

what’s their destiny? at least one of them dies of old age before the playoffs. several others retire by then. or they get the ECFs, or the Finals and win it all. who knows? don’t count out the C’s yet or think they’re going to roll over in the first round. they’re old, but there’s a lot of talent on that team and the playoffs are a different situation. forget about the bulls series. older, injured KG is better than KG on the bench.

  • ENDS

    “I was saying boo-urns”

  • roman

EXPOSED- Where are all the C’s fans that was talking so much smack earlier in the season. I wore all black today. I know its a funeral in Boston.

  • letsmotor

    hah! great simpsons reference, Anton!

  • roman

KG and comp should be real humble right about now. His yappin days are over! I also enjoyed how Ray Allen got all in Rondos mug about dishing the ball, and then when Rondo dishes to Allen, he throws up bricks.

  • letsmotor

@roman: Ray had a terrible shooting night from three, something that happens to the best of shooters, but he was still 7-14 overall. And what’s wrong with him demanding the ball? He’s Ray Allen, and if he’s open, he should get the ball.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

I was there and left after three quarters. Could have left at halftime even. They deserved the boos because their play was just AWFUL. Sloppy, lazy, unmotivated. Fans don’t wanna pay to watch crappy basketball, so put up or shut up Paul.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

those werent boos.. they were chanting- Jackie Moooon.

  • Stillballin

I think the age is already showing on the celtics..but there still one of the elite team in the NBA..

  • Ree Roe

@ d’bri, as a Celtics hater, I encourage people to boo Boston whether they win, lose or draw. If I was a fan of that god forsaken franchise, I’d boo them & myself for actually thinkin it was a good idea to support those f**ks. As a Hawks fan, I take personal enjoyment watchin Boston implode on a nightly basis.

Dude, the Celtics lost to the Nets. Try again.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Wouldn’t it be funny if there losing games on purpose so the league will sleep on them and then come playoff time the Celtics will play like they were supposed and return to 08 form plus more!(Sheed,Nate, better Rondo) and just dominate everyone.

  • roman

@Pardeep- wake up homeboy, you are dreamin.

  • roman

Maybe you will bounce back on Sunday.

  • kg

losing to the nets and the bucks ? plus glen davis getting dunked on by bogut . if i were on that team i wuld boo myself lol

  • therighttoremainsalient

The Milwuakee Bucks straight up WANTED their throats in their win. Here The Celtics looked “old”.. Barkley has been saying it all seen… In this game I think the Celtics are just really really looking to have a rest. I’m thinking that Garnett may well retire after this season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Garnetts going to play another 3 years.

  • therighttoremainsalient

Bogut wasn’t just dunking on Davis… Bogut OWNS the rights to Glen Davis’ future offspring, and just made it known publicly.

  • ab_40

if the celtics remain in fourth place it’s gonna be an amazing battle. orlando will be well rested since they have atlanta’s number. but boston vs cleveland think about it those are 9 current or folmer all stars playing against one another. That’s gonna be basketball at a very high level. And please stop hypin up milwaukee they got a nice team don’t get me wrong but to think they’ll win more than 1 game in the playoffs is absurd. whoever plays charlotte is gonna be tired as hell come the second round. Miami has dwayne wade to make it interesting.

And while an injured portland team still has a better record then the grizz. the grizz are a bigger wild card come playoff time IF they make it. Portland is gonna be tough as well. rudy is gonna do some great things. As much as I love manu’s game the spurs are kinda done to me. they don’t have that extra gear, they don’t play the tough D. Of course they still have the best coach and one of the if not the best power forward in the L but still. I’d love to see em in a second round battle with the lakers. And is dallas legit? they just don’t have that true superstar. Dirk, butler, terry and kidd are nice but they don’t have that 4th quarter killer that most title contenders have. Even the detroit teams had chauncey who’s the no1 guy in the clutch for dallas? Dirk can’t make love to pressure like stephen jackson can

It was funny, everyone who hated the Lakers was all about Ariza this and Ariza that, so good, Lakers need to keep him … how is that going now?

they will get used to the boos

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

James, I’m a fellow laker fan, and I’m telling you straight up I will trade three ron artests and a half-eaten lamar-chloe sandwich for trevor ariza to suit back up his purple and golds. Dude was clutch on both ends of the floor, and consistently. Him shannon and kobe and a bunch of scrubs would have LA winning more convincingly again.

  • Th3_R3al_Chris

If Rajon Rondo is the team’s “best” player, then the Boston Celtics are in trouble.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

I meant “K”hloe. And I don’t know why I wrote that, it doesn’t make a lick of sense. In fact it sounds disgusting. I wouldn’t feed that to a malnutritioned homeless santa dying of AIDS. But my argument of ariza being better than ronron for LA stands.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@Th3_R3al_Chris: Exactly! Thing is this team gave control to Rondo too fast. Too much power in Rondo’s hand he should have stayed the way he was in 08

  • http://alimartin07@yahoo.com Ali

We all know the Celts are old, and it shows at times when they play some of those young gun teams. In a 7 game series, I believe the Celts will hang with anyone. Rondo will need to muster up a few (“messed around and got a triple double” games) No need to worry yet. I can forsee them getting whooped in a 7th game, due to their age, injuries, and fatigue though.

If you think that the celtics are just waltz into the playoffs and just “turn it on” you are sadly mistaken. This is just jargon for ” Were old and we can’t play at a high level constantly, so well just say we are bumming it until the big dance comes along”. If they pass the first round, they like someone said early well limp past the second round.

I’m with my C’s no matter what! I was down before & during the Bird era. I loved them after that era when things were really bad and when we won it a couple of years ago when we won. Always GREEN! no front running or back sliding here.
