Alvin Gentry Would Like a Word With Chris Webber

Looking for as much bulletin board material as he can find to motivate his team, Suns coach Alvin Gentry has taken issue with recent comments about their defense made by TNT analyst Chris Webber.

“Teams don’t shoot 58 percent against us,” Gentry said Friday, referring to the Lakers’ shooting in Games 1 and 2. “That’s not who we are, contrary to what Chris Webber thinks, OK? Yeah, and I’m throwing that out there too, all right? They don’t. He should check his stats also. Like I said, I’m a factual guy. His definition of a horrible defensive team is not the same as ours. That’s my hit for the day.

I don’t mind him talking about the coaching. He can talk about how bad the coaches are but to say that these guys are a terrible defensive team is not fair. It’s unfair to these guys because they worked hard to get better in that area right there. That’s my (ticked-)off statement for the day, OK?

Given Phoenix’s exceptional play over the series last three games, it seems Webber would be willing to reconsider his asessment. We’ll see if Gentry gets a win or an apology tonight.

I can hear Alvin’s voice in my head saying this…”Oh-kaay”.

Nice way to quote him w/ all the OKs and Yeahs

Gentry talks like a salesman right?. He ends his sentences with questions that get you nodding your head and saying ‘yes’ right?. Next thing you know, you’re buying something okay? Sounds like a good idea okay?

Well Webber is right, otherwise they wouldn’t use the zone so much. The only good defensive player is Grant Hill.

Webber’s Kings were always known as defensive monsters right? This is coming from a guy who never played defense. It’s like when Barkley trashes a guy for lack of fitness or acting like a knucklehead. But Barkley is a Hall of Famer, and a far better player than C-Webb easily so he can talk.

Amundsen, Lopez, Hill and Dudley all play defense. Amare does at times, but gets horrible calls against him. Like he can’t outjump Gasol who got blocked straight up by 37 year old Grant Hill tonight.

Webber also doesn’t think Gentry calls enough timeouts either.

My dearest Suns, What a wonderful effort you guys put into the series. The team is amazing and you displayed heart, tenacity and a desire to compete at the highest level – thank you!!

  • AL29

Co-sign Dacre. Great run, Suns. Nash reminded everyone that he was a legitimate 2-time MVP, tough as nails, and still one of the best players in the league. The bench stepped up, and those young guys will carry this year’s experience wherever they go, for years to come. And BTW, I love Alvin Gentry, hmm-kay?

Robb, the Suns didn’t switch to zone because they were bad defensively. It was because the size and length of the Lakers, especially inside, was a bad match up one on one. Also co-signing Dacre and AL29. They were a tough, gritty team that never gave up in this series and that’s all you can ask for. Nash is still the man. On a side note, as strong as everyone says Derek Fisher is, I wish he’d stop flopping around all over the place. It looks pathetic. The refs need to start giving out technicals for that kind of BS

    Ok, or ‘alriiiiight’

Got to give Gentry credit, he’s taken a team that was predicted to go nowhere this season and led them all the way to the Conference Finals. Where were the Mavs, Nuggets, Jazz and Spurs. All four teams were built to contend the Lakers but none of them could come close. Only the 8th seed Thunder and now the much smaller Suns could push the Lakers.

I’m equal parts excited and fearful of what the Suns will do next year – will Amar’e be curious and wish to experience different surrounds? Grant and Steve lead the team no doubt….but dudley and Goran showed what fresh legs can do…. will Louis Amundson stick around who go for money elsewhere? ANOTHER 82 games to get back to the playoffs…. it seems like it’s so far away, and THIS season hasn’t even finished yet…. So many questions. I can’t wait.

i am a big lakers fan but in the final analysis the suns defense was not as horrible as chris was alluding to, and they did take huge strides to improve…kudos to alvin gentry
