Conflicting Reports on Mike Brown’s Job Status (UPDATED)

According to SI.com, multiple sources are saying that Mike Brown has been let go by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Brian Windhorst, Cavs beat writer at the Plain Dealer, however, has refuted that claim on Twitter. “This is not true. As of this moment, at least,” tweeted Windhorst in response to a tweet by Chris Mannix of SI.com. Formerly an assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, in his five seasons leading the Cavs, Brown’s posted two 50 win seasons and two 60 win seasons. In the Playoffs, his record is 42-29,  including a trip to the NBA Finals.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert refuted the SI report of Brown’s firing, saying: “That’s not true. We are right now going through the evaluation process. We’re talking to coach Brown, talking to (GM) Danny Ferry, getting all the information.”

I don’t hate the man but you have been gifted a once in a life time player that can do everything but could not coach the supporting cast I would say goodbye as well.

  • kev

he is gone finally!!!! When your best player also serves as coach of the team something is horribly wrong. This team had no semblance of any type of offensive system other than stand around and watch lebron. Granted mike brown can’t take all the blame because they just don’t have enough talent to win a championship but, it was clear to see that he had no business being an nba coach. I won’t miss seeing his befuddled look on the sideline and I guarantee you he wont be getting another head coaching job anytime soon.

They need to fire Danny Ferry.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

That’s some pretty nice records. Two 50 win seasons and two 60 win seasons. In the Playoffs,42-29. But also kind of weird he’s getting fired because of that…

Now he can go back to hanging out with the hamburglar

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

I gotta agree with jeff van gundy, it cant all be the players who get the credit when they win, and all mike when they lose. Its not the coaches fault when a team loses by 30

  • LA Huey

He’s a good coach for young team looking to build but not for one with championship aspirations. Peace out!

  • Kyle

LeBron signs with whichever team signs Calipari.

  • http://twitter.com/PDXGayBBall dma

maybe he’s being kept on as an assistant coach? because why wouldn’t they fire him yet? waiting for lebron’s decision before they decide on the next coach?

  • http://toronto.com Mr 416

Thats’ a typo in that headline. It should read
    ( YET ).

  • matt604

Can someone do some number crunching for me? How many coaches have been fired after winning COTY?

  • eDouble

Sounds good that they are finally getting rid of this Mr. Potato Head look-a-like. He is one of the worst coaches in the L. He has a stacked team this season yet he still managed to mess up in the playoffs. One more point, WHY THE HELL WOULD HE PUT SHAQ ON KG!!!! Fire him quick and do not look back.

  • Jesse Dunns Ghost

Somehow or another Riles or P Jax will show up on the bench next year!!! IF lebron is still there…

  • Jesse Dunns Ghost

Furthermore he had lebron being Jordan AND Pippen all at the same time. they need a HOF coach whose done itbefore and a versatile wing who can create his own, thereby lebron wont have to be point-everything and focus on scoring/defense.

  • Homie

Matt604, Sam Mitchell springs to mind.

Mike Brown should have been fired 3 years ago, when he refused to turn Cleveland into a fast paced team. Its pathetic, danny ferry should be fired just as quickly for trading for old players. Mo Williams was the youngest asset Ferry has added, and he is not even good outside of his jumpshot. I mean how blatantly bad can a front office be. LeBron choked in the playoffs this year obviously, but really give the dude legitimate help, or atleast a logical coach. what a joke

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Too late BTW, LBJ is not coming back to Cleveland if he wants to win. That team has pigeon holed themselves into a downward spiral. They can’t get better, all their money is tied to players that re either past their primes, or overrated

  • bill breedley

and again the blame goes to Lebron’s coach. lebron’s turnovers did them in. plain and simple. 9 turnovers from your go to guy in an elimination game?!?!?! what other explanation do you need

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    Tad, what’s wrong with Ferry?

  • http://www.youtube.com/tripledouble TripleDouble

Hold on a second… isn’t it true that Cleveland have enough space to sign a max player as well as Lebron? Whether that be Bosh or Amare or whoever… Do they still have that cap space? Or did they forego that with the Jamison trade?

So many of you are being overly dramatic… He’ll do what he’ll do… but if Cleveland can sign a major piece, then I’m picking he stays. In saying that, I want him to go to New York.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ The Promise

They need Doc Rivers to tell them, “I know you wanna win, but you gotta do it together!!” hahahaha

  • clos1881

I think the Cavs have mis-match parts they have half court guys some run and gun guys so its hard to have an identity. I blame that on the GM. If they want to keep Lebron let him make a list of coaches he would like similar to how the lakers handled kobe possibly leaving. Side note I would love to see lebron in the triangle so he wouldn’t pound the ball so much.

  • Yesse

Well, this just looks like the Cavaliers organization is going to be torn apart. Next Shaq retires, then they trade a few guys and then LeBron leaves.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

kyle: so you mean he’s staying with the cavs?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

if they kept him as an assistant coach, which HIGHLY unlikely, i think that would be… hmm.. i don’t know what to feel if that happens, anyway it won’t. as far as looking for a coach, they need someone who can spank Lebron’s a** (if he stays anyway) even that would cost him his job.

    hahahaha! im gay!

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

    Delonte west!

  • hushabomb

I honestly don’t think that a signing or a trade wouldn’t go pass LeBron!!! He’s asked for help and got what he wanted! When Shaq signed w/ Miami they didn’t win it his 1st year either (it was his 2nd) Give it time and it can work!

  • ClydeSays

I’ll only be a surprise if he stays. Brown did an excellent job getting some of his younger players to commit to defense, but he always seem to fall short on the offensive end. I think it takes a strong minded coach to control a player who dominates the ball like LBJ, Wade or Kobe. Brown seemed to have a hands off approach. In his defense, Cavs players seemed to defer to LBJ on the court almost all the time. That’s on Ferry for not bringing in a playermaker or an offensive co-ordinator.
I don’t know if the Cavs had an offensive Those two things would have eased some of the pressure on James & Brown…

  • http://wildcat4life@live.com The Promise

@hushabomb: Shaq did win the chip in Miami his first year.

  • Jose

@ The Promise:nah dude, hushabomb was right 2nd year. detroit took em out, it ended up SA/DET finals that yr.

  • http://wealwayswin.net Hersey

Mike Brown is hot garbage. Outcoached two years in a row. Couldn’t settle on a rotation. insisted on double-teaming Howard last year to their ultimate demise and this year in the most important game of the year trots out Shaq to guard Garnett. Garnett starts hot, GAME OVER. Getting outplayed is understandable if they have better talent, getting outcoached means you’re out.

just the worst coach in the league

  • http://theurbangriot.com/ NUPE

I’m not a MB fan but it’s hard to fauld him for his record which includes a COTY. Before the season even started many people thought the Celts were the best in the east IF they were healthy. Unfortuneatly for the Cavs, the Celts were healthy in that series. This was the best supporting cast that LBJ has had, and it’s still not very good. That’s the GM’s fault, not the coaches. With that said, I think LBJ stays in Cleveland and both Ferry and MB get fired. As somebody else already said, Avery Johnson may be next in line for the job. IF MB would stay as a defensive coach to provide some level of consistency that would be great as well. The only way the Cavs win a chip in the next 1-3 years is if they go even further over the cap and bring in another bonafide star (stat/bosh) and a 7 footer who can move. Big Z and Shaq don’t have a place on the squad any more :-(
