Did Mark Cuban Tamper With LeBron James?

The madness that is James’ free agency has everyone talking, and perhaps saying a little too much. As Mark Cuban has recently discovered, following an interview with CNN that the NBA is now looking into. From the Plain Dealer: “The NBA is looking into comments by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban about likely free-agent-to-be LeBron James. NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league was looking into the comments but told The Plain Dealer on Thursday night that there was no timetable for a decision. Said Cuban in the interview: “Come July 1st, yeah, of course, anybody would be interested in LeBron James, and if he leaves via free agency, then it’s going to be tough. If he does like I’m guessing, hoping he will, which is say, ‘I’m not going to leave the Cavs high and dry,’ if he decides to leave — there’s still a better chance he stays — then he’ll try to force a sign-and-trade, and that gives us a chance. . . . What I do know about LeBron in the minimal time I’ve spent talking to him is he just wants to win. Money’s not his issue. He needs to be someplace where he trusts the organization. And look, [owner] Dan Gilbert in Cleveland did everything he possibly could, that’s just the way the game works. If there was a template that we all could follow, we’d all have championship rings.’”

What’s the controversy? Him mentioning a sign and trade?

Team owners, managers etc aren’t allowed to enter into ‘trade/signing discussions’; the beef is that essentially Mark Cuban is putting an ‘offer’ out there that the Mavs would like to be part of a deal, if a said deal was on the cards…. if your familiar with poker, you could liken this to “table talk”, saying nothing, when your inadvertantly trying to say something….. slap on the wrist.

So is the NBA going to look into Jim Brown’s comments about how LeBron will leave too? Why stop there? Should they also look into everything that is said and written about LeBron this summer. This is a non issue.

    huh?? dont get it…

I think the controversy may be in him expressing interest in Lebron, as team owner (thus representing the team): “…[t]hat gives us a chance.” I don’t think he gets sanctioned for this though, because I think what he meant to say is that in the off-chance he (Bron) decides to leave, every team is going to want to take a crack at signing him, including the Mavs.

    Sorry for the double post.

No idea if thats true, but that rumor’s been swirling around Ohio since the day after the Cavs were knocked out..

That is old news, Brion. It was first reported last week. The definite untrue part of that is that Delonte does not have herpes. As for the other part, it is all still complete rumor.

    Oh my bad…thanks.

  • LA Huey

@Brion, if your teammate boned your mom, would you continue your usual superfluous handshake routine with him as LBJ did before Games 5 & 6? If you check the tapes, you can see ‘Bron did his usual pregame thing.

If Stern was fair, he’d see this wasn’t really tampering but Stern HATES Cuban. Also, I believe the rules state that no white-collar types were allowed to speculate on any player’s pending free agency. Which Cuban did. Unfortunately, I think Stern will get all Thor up in this batch.

  • anti-crust

I don’t see enough talk that would considered tampering. Cuban was talking about Lebron, The fact he has talked to Lebron in the past, but the fact he brought up sign and trade could be construed as a message to Lebron that he has more options than those teams with open cap space…that any team is an option…including Dallas. It’s a close call, but Stern’s record in situations like this are usaully fines. Phil Jackson is th $35K/man, Mark Cuban is the $50K-$100K dollar marks. Stern is a jerk.

@LaHuey,that is a good point. i probly wouldnt be giving any “dap” to a teamate who boned my mom. Like i said i just heard it on the radio and was curious.

  • hoodsnake

So if he said it on July 1st it would have been fine?

I might need to GOOGLE the NBA’s tampering laws. Off top, I don’t consider anything said by Mavs owner to be considered as tampering.

I don’t get why these rules are in place. Had the talk been about Sheldon Williams nobody would give a $hit. Why are teams’ beat writers able to speculate? They get plenty of info from management etc.
