Does Vinsanity Make the Orlando Magic Unbeatable?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The Orlando Magic had tremendous balance on the offensive end last night, as they took what appears to be an insurmountable 2-0 series lead over the Atlanta Hawks. Four of the five starters scored over 20 points, but it’s one in particular that has the fans and media in Orlando excited about the team’s chances.

Vince Carter’s breakout performance of 24 points/7 boards (with 20 points coming in the second half) has those who believe in the Magic puffing out their chests a bit, and getting their championship hopes up.

As for Vince himself, he says he doesn’t have to do as much now as he did in the past, when teams counted on him to dominate on a nightly basis.

These days, he simply picks his spots. From the Orlando Sentinel:

Now, because he’s on a title contender with multiple weapons, he largely probes. He observes the terrain. Take Game 2 against Atlanta: The Hawks were corralling him, making him give up the ball. He passed it around the horn. Teammates started hitting shots. He saw the driving lanes open — and he blitzed the coverages for two dunks.

“I was just trying to make plays; just patience is the most important thing,” he said. “It worked out for me.” He stumbles along at times — like a 1-of-4, 4-point first-half — and then Vince lapses into Vinsanity. Like scoring 20 points in the second half, and 11 in the final quarter, the Magic needing all of them to stave off the Hawks in Game 2 Thursday night. He was a vintage closer.

“It’s who I am,” said Carter, who finished the second half shooting 8-of-11. “It’s who I’ve been for a long time. I didn’t want it to be any different coming here with this wonderful team with a lot of scorers.”

The Orlando Magic have incredible depth, with multiple guys being able to carry the offensive load any given night. It’s when they all click — last night, for instance — that the team becomes truly frightening, and perhaps the favorite to win it all.

Going forward in this postseason, Vince Carter won’t be able to pick his spots as much; Orlando will rely on him more and more as the level of competition increases.

Can he deliver for his team by morphing into “Vinsanity” consistently? We’ll soon find out.

The Magic keep looking better and better as they go…they’re a scary team for anyone to face right now.

  • TyMo

All ready for a Magic-Suns Finals. You cool with that, SLAM?

  • Sparker

when dwight had that nose thing and had to leave, you could see the light go on in vince’s eyes. he immediately hit his first 3.

  • maclovenotwar

his block of Williams (?) that set up that 3. That was good.

  • http://recognizethegame.com Rosef

Lets be serious. They have played the bobcats and the Hawks. let that soak in for a bit then come talk about championships

  • JoeMaMa

I called these guys to win it all. Their size is incredible: Dwight, Bass, Gortat, Pietrus, Barnes, Lewis, Vince, Ryan Andersen…these are strong, big, athletic guys, most of whom can shoot the ball extremely well. With Nelson balling out, these guys won’t lose. It just goes to show you…they didn’t keep Gortat and sign Bass for the Eastern battles, but for the Lakers. This team is geared to take the trophy.

  • bashmo

MY favourite team, and i really think this year we have a good chance of making the finals…i hope this domination of atl so far continues into game 3 and 4, but its gonna be tough especially considering how aggresive they came out yesterday. D12 having a monster 2 games, 25 pts, 14 brds, and carter stepped up both games, so heres hoping its on to cleveland/boston in 4 games.

  • neaorin

Any time D12 has 29 points on 9 field goal attempts the Magic are unstoppable.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

@basmo: This year? You know Magic was in the 2009 Finals?

  • CDef28

I love seeing all the people jumping out of the woods to say they’ve always liked Orlando. Just remember these frauds when/if another team knocks the Magic off.

  • ClydeSays

He might prove me wrong, but I think Vince is a couple of hard playoff fouls from turning back into Wince. The Magic might be good enough to win without him, but VC is not a guy I’m counting on down the stretch.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

JoeMama: good points but the Magic have yet to meet a team that has given them serious problems in these playoffs. The ‘Cats were pushovers, and the Magic have dominated the Hawks in the regular season. They go up against Boston or Cleveland, they can be in trouble.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    HATE that pic of Vince…

  • jeff

This team will go as far as Vince. He has always had the talent now it’s time to prove all of his critics wrong.

  • JoeMaMa

@CDef28: I don’t necessarily like this team: I’m a Spurs/Raps guy. But I think they’ll win it; an opinion based on their performance, roster, and recent finals experience. Just calling it like I see it.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Michael Scorn

Only teams with The King are unbeatable. You are going to have to knock The King out of the playoffs one of these years before you start talking about being unbeatable. The King is the ultimate test of the highest level of basketball.

  • JoeMaMa

@CDef28: I’m a Spurs/Raps guy. But I think the combination of size, skill, recent playoff experience, and their current run will get them the title. Just calling it like I see it.
Also, Michael Scorn has been instructed to stay 500 yards away from LeBron James at all times.

  • peter

So they are 2-0 against a team that went 7 games against a team without its best player…which tells us…absolutely nothing. Talk to me about unbeatable when they are up 2-0 against Boston or Cleveland.

  • rikson

I would say, that all the other playoff-teams in the east have to beat orlando not vice-versa, bc – you know- they were in the finals last year… the king, who?

  • MIke

Your going to have to knock the king out? Umm hasnt everyone done that in his career. The man has zero rings. And he sure as hell aint beating the Magic this year. VC is gettin his

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/05/does-vinsanity-make-the-orlando-magic-unbeatable/ Mike

@Rikson The Magic are the team 2 beat? You do know K.G. was hurt last year and it still took Orlando 7 games 2 knock them out?

@Michael Scorn The King better worry about the C’s 1st b4 he worries about the Magic. Boston looks hungry right now Lakers vs. Celtics Finals Lakers in 7

  • LA Huey

@Mike, you’re going to talk about rings when you’re supporting the Magic? Stop being silly.
Regardless, the defending conference champs are the team to beat.

  • rikson

@Mike: KG isnt the beast he was anymore – in fact he turned into an a**hole. Orlando is the team to beat…

  • Aaron

    Do pigs fly?

  • Buschfire

I would love to see a PHX VS ORL or PHX VS ClE Final…

  • Wat Misaka

I’m with clyde always easy to bet on the proven quantity of Wince Carter’s mental toughness.

  • D12FSU

@MIKE….ummm didnt the magic beat the team with the king just last playoffs?? soooo what are you trying to prove?

  • http://slamonline.com JL

I think Michael Scorn was being sarcastic…

  • ripslam

Michael Scorn: Waitwaitwait…WHO got rid of Cleveland last year in 6 games? Oh yeah, ORLANDO. Stupidass. Also, why is everyone so hooked on the Suns? Let’s be real, they’re not getting past LA.

  • vtrobot

@ Bigi: I was thinking the same thing. That shot of VC would go well with that recent series of Kobe.

  • Exile

@ripslam: Thats the smart money. But who thought the Suns would be up against the SPURS (so far)?

  • dar

HAHAHAH, Michael Scorn is by far my favorite poster on this site..

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

So they have totally dominated in the playoffs, so what? Its not lik they beat all the other elite teams in the season. O they did? Its not like they have a stackd roster and are playing their best. O they are? Its not like jameer is above his allstar level. He is? Its not like dwight is scoring any way he wants. U mean he is? Its not like he can compose himself and make free throws. He did?

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

I think, over the course of their careers, dwight will take brons title as THE KING

  • reald1

THEY ARE THE ONLY TEAM TO BEAT EVERY NBA TEAM IN THE REGULAR SEASON

  • http://l rev. gat

Hands down the best team with the deepeset bench. kobe should have got suspended last year for hit my boy Jameer in the face with the ball…. but anyway.
Orlando and Magic 2 this time a sweep. go magic!!

  • The Reign Man

@tarzan. did dwight dominate from day 1 ? We don’t think so.

  • Nawlins Realest.

    Nice Tarzan!!!!!

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

my team was eliminated by the Suns(who i actually like), and because of that Im on the Magic bandwagon just like i was last year!

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@The Reign: Nor did Lebon. He put up 20-5-5 and played very very well for a rook but did not dominate from day one.

  • NBA kid

Michael Scorn is either a satirical genius or a fanboy idiot. I sure hope he’s the satirist cause he is one funny dude.

  • Robb

Charles Barkley is posting here under the name of “Michael Scorn”.

  • backboard

Hahahaha, vinsanity making the magic unbeatable? This made me lol. You realize we are talking about Vince here?! HAHAHAHA……..

  • Shem

SLAM is truly ridiculous.. Mid-season when Vince was struggling, before Lawrence Frank came in.. THEY WERE THE FIRST to bash on Vince! Now they’re on his dic* saying he makes the Orlando Magic unbeatable? They’re beatable.. just not when everything’s clickin and they spread the floor and share the rock. When that 3 ball drops not even the best superstar wing players can stop them ALA Kobe and LeBron. But, as we’ve all seen the Magic aren’t always making shots.
