Howard: Magic Need Players Who ‘Give Everything’

by Ryne Nelson

Dwight Howard questioned his teammates’ desire after last night’s season-ending loss in Boston. From Chris Mannix of SI.com:

“Next year we have got to have guys that are willing to give everything they have got to get wins,” Howard said. “[Boston] played like they wanted to win the championship the whole series. That’s why they are in the position that they are in now.”

Help, of course, can come from the outside. The Magic will be well over the salary cap but can use their mid-level exception to try and lure a veteran power forward into the fold. But ownership might not be quite so eager to push the payroll close to $100 million, not with Redick eyeing a big raise and Williams (or another backup point) needed to relieve Nelson.

Considering Orlando’s sky-high payroll, the Magic’s disheartened leader might be better off focusing his energy on improving aspects of his game, as both a leader and player. But that, of course, is just this writer’s suggestion.

The rest of Orlando is thinking “Next year, we’ve got to have a true scoring center.” Learn a post move, then we’ll talk, Dwight. Free throws might not be a bad idea, either. Your form is atrocious.

how is that vince carter for courtney lee trade working out for the magic now?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Vince Carter disappeared like the last episode of LOST. I hate to say it, but if they had Hedo they would have beat the Celtics. Think about game one and two, lost by a total of seven points. Because they could have put Hedo at SF to take Lewis out the game and brought Peitrus or Barnes at the SG. I love their lineup last year with Pietrus and Hedo playing together. Both are three point threats and can get in the lane and create shots. Trade Vince Carter for Stephen Jackson, send Carter back to North Carolina and get some players with hearts. Orlando was the better team to me, Celtics TEAM PLAY won it. All their guys played with passion, even when they were down in games. LAKERS IN 6 over CELTICS. KOBE gets the real MVP again FINALS MVP!!!. BOOK IT!!!

  • ripslam

The Seed: You do know that people have predicted a 6-game demise for the Celtics for the past two rounds now, and look what happened. Don’t underestimate them. If Kobe is the only guy who shows up to the Finals, it’s over.

Patrick Ewing should have taught Howard at least one or two moves by now right? Maybe a 10ft jumper? Hmm…pretty sure that dunking isn’t the only way to score. Stop watching Darius Miles tape, Dwight. Oh and he basically called out VC, Rashard, Barnes and anyone on the bench who sees actual minutes. Hit the gym with Bass this summer, Dwight, he can actually teach you a lot.

  • mikee

The Magic need a player who can create his own shot. Too bad they let Hedo Turkoglu go. Trade Vince!

  • bnets

Maybe they will trade for Vince Carter hahah

  • bnets

I mean trade VC for Turkulo lol

  • J.C.

    veteran power forward?
didn’t they sign brandon bass a year ago??

  • LA Huey

Ship Vince out. Package him w/ Gortat.

  • bnets

Actually they should of put VC at point he was doin great distributing da ball late in da 2nd Q since nate dog was dominatin Jameer. SVG did that with Turkulo bringin up da ball last year I don`t know why he did not do that with VC, he already knew Jameer was havin a sloppy game and so was Rashard, and Barnes. SVG shoulda put VC at point, Pietrus at 2 who was shootin well and Reddick to sub in, Barnes at da 3 or Pietrus/Ryan Anderson, Rashard at da 4 and Bass/Gortat to sub in at 4 to play along side Dwight at Center.

  • AL29

Orlando fans have learned that what Nets and us Raps fans have learned about Vince Carter. He stinks. He’s got lots of talent, but he doesn’t give a sh*t about winning as long as he gets his massive paycheck. I think Orlando should trade him to Washington for Arenas, as I hear that Areas and Orlando’s GM are buddies. But I hope they don’t do anything and continue to lose when it counts, because I hate Orlando. Oh, and JVG’s players hate him. LOL

  • AL29

    I meant SVG

  • larrylegend

look for houston’S junk yard dogs!

  • bnets

He had 4 great years as a Net sorry dude, but I agree he wanted out of Raptors haha

  • larrylegend

vince to play point! no way, he’S careless dribbling and wants to do the flashy move instead the basic, so maaaany TO’s!

  • Nashty

People hinting/criticizing VC for not giving his all? That’s shocking…..

  • Atrain

Um, didn’t Dwight fail to “give everything” for half this series?

  • Shem

Vince had a game with 9 pts and a game with 3 pts. Both on awful shooting under 30%. They won both games he played bad. They don’t need Vince. This was a good article. A veteran forward and move Lewis down to the small would be better on both sides of the floor. Bass and Barnes coming off the bench would make this team that much deeper. Basically trade Vince for a veteran forward. Start Nelson, Pietrus, Lewis, New forward and Dwight. WIlliams, Redick, Barnes, Bass and Gortat off the bench aint too shabby.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GerardHimself Gerard Himself

Look, I always defended VC for what he did for my beloved Nets. He played great during those years. But i’m realistic: he and Lewis made 34 million this season, 37 million next season, and they combined for only 22 ppg against the Celtics. I almost wonder if Lewis should move to the SF position again so he can attack a bit more, and put Bass in the starting line-up (and Ryan Anderson backing him up) with Pietus at SG. If they can trade VC they should do it. They can’t though, so I believe that Orlando has some huge problems to address this summer.

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com rainman10

Dwight can score the ball. We know that. If people have watched him over the years, and even this season, they would have seen that Dwight has developed his post moves. That wasn’t why they lost. This is the best defensive front court in the league and he had a few big games this series.

  • vtrobot

There’s no point in Dwight focusing on improving himself because he’s painfully aware that he’s as good as he’s going to get. Keep on smilin’ Superman and better luck next year. At least the C’s will be a little older.

  • vtrobot

giving everything you have = 7 pts., 7 rebounds in a playoff loss.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton
  • bdub

SJax would fit well in orlando

  • Mo

Maybe someone should develop a post move before they mouth off. Seriously, just one. He has Pat Chewing as his personal coach for pete’s sake.

Here’s another idea; no more ego stroking ESPN halfitme pieces where you’re interviewing yourself until you win something. Strike that, even if you do win something Dwight, that’s still horrible form.

  • bnets

I still believe VC should have been put at da point who only had 2 TOs and was scoring and distributing da ball well. Instead SVG went back to Jameer who clearly was having a bad game and J Will who was only lookin for his shot and Nate/Rondo was dominatin both guards at da defensive/offensive end. If VC was put at da point he would of created a mismatch in da post/perimeter and would have been double teamed and would find open jump shooters/cutters. That is what SVG did last playoff season with Turkulo and eliminated da Celtics.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Was that a slight against Vince Carter?

  • http://twitter.com/PDXGayBBall dma

i don’t hate vince carter. i hate vince carter’s game. at least learn how to act like pierce if you’re going to drive and avoid contact. at the beginning of the year, everybody thought the magic made a great deal because ryan anderson was shooting lights out, now it’s obvious the trade was a draw. bring back courtney lee.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This was a subliminal shot at VC.

  • whyldcarrd

Can’t people see that this series was just won by the team that wanted it more? Rather than shooting blame, and calling for trades, why don’t people just try to encourage their current team? I think Vince is a gun, he’s a threat on both the 3pt line and driving in. If he’s properly motivated, he’ll be capable of big things.

  • Magicman12

Cant blame it on ryan anderson hes a good player with a bit of potential we should keep him and get rid of vc i would say for turgulu but hes not going back to raps get rid of gortat 2 they need to make some major changes in the frachise oboisly keep dwight because he is the franchise player but they need a good sg the free agencys coming up so its all good i would say joe johnson but he no better than vc effort wise

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Its entirely unfair to pile it all on vince. When he got there, everyone said great now he can be a 3rd or 4th option, that would be best for him at this point in his career, he is 33 u know. Then, after they went down 0 3, all of a sudden its, why isnt vince dominating games and getting 30ppg?. The whole team only played well in spurts, not enough now. Btw, vince was the only magic going hard in game 1

  • Robb

VC absolutely sucked. He just disappeared during the last 3 games. Putting all the blame on him is unfair I agree, but he surely showed his limitations. Mentally he’s weak and that’s not gonna change at this point. He looked like a Cavs player. Half man…and that’s it.

  • Goat

    SIGN and Trade:

    LeBron and JJ Hickson

    for

    Vince and Rashard!

I have no idea if the numbers would work, probably not.

  • Goat

Vince will never be a winner. He has to go if this team wants to win a championship. Bass should have played more throughout the entire series. Why didn’t Ryan Anderson get any burn in the playoffs? I thought he was bombing some threes and crashing the boards during the regular season?

  • ClydeSays

They lost some of Hedo’s playmaking, but Jameer should have picked up that slack. I know he’s a scoring PG but he should have 12 apg off of lobs to Howard, Lewis and VC. I knew the Magic were in trouble when Reddick looked like the best defender. Consitant d, better ft shooting and your scorers showing up for thre series would have made a difference. I think Howard can improve, but I doubt he’ll ever morph into Ewing.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Vince Carter. Antawn Jamison. Both VANISHED from their series’ against Boston.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Definitely a shot at Vince. The entire Raptor fanbase though is just going “told you so” right now. He incredulously has made the most disappointing player in Toronto right now (Hedo) look great. Wow.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Tragically, Vince Carter suffers from the basketball equivalent of the curse of oil.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also could be a shot at Rashard Lewis. He played pretty horribly, no offense to him. Where was the Lewis from the last year who hit coldblooded game winners?

  • Flash

Brandon Bad ass needs more minutes

  • Josh

@ Joel O’s. I am a part of the raptors fanbast but I love vince. He at least game me some entertainment and memories for my buck. I have no idea how Rashard lewis got that contract but you really can’t hate on a dude getting paid, even if he doesn’t deserve it.

I’ve got to hate on both the coach and the top player saying no one on the team has the heart and didn’t want it more than the Celtics. Damn that is your team you are talking about. Keep it in the locker room.

  • Justin

Wow, this is awfully hypocritical of Howard. Way to call out people after the series is over and it isn’t exactly like he stepped it up this series either. Yes, Vince disappeared but is anyone really surprised? As for Patrick Ewing showing Dwight some moves, I don’t think Howard wants to learn how to take 3 steps across the lane for some ugly running hook. They only learn that at Georgetown.

  • KH10

SVG Sucks! until the magic get a new coach they arent going to win anything, its no use having four three point shooters and Dwight, if the other team doesnt have to double Dwight.

  • Justin

Blaming it on SVG is absolutely ridiculous. It isn’t his fault his players underachieve and have no heart.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

@Josh: I’ve actually let go of those horrible 2002-2003 years’ sense of betrayal myself, and remember his best times in TO with nostalgia. This series just proved that VC is just… cursed by his extraordinary gifts, due to the fact he just doesn’t have the heart of a contender. It’s really not his fault.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ The Promise

I hate to say it, because Vince has always been one of my favorite players, but, I’m afraid his career is nearly over. His knees are shot, he has lost his quickness, and has never had a consistent jumper to make up for the step he has lost over the last few years. Rashard Lewis played poorly also, easily the most overpaid player in the league. But regardless, Dwight should just keep quiet about that and focus on improving his own game, because his flaws really got exposed in this series. What he said sounds to me like he was shirking his responsibility for not getting it done.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

Basically, wing players like Vince, Lewis, LeDanceDance and Wade get shut down by the Celtics, just watch – all of a sudden Ron Artest will struggle as will Lamar if he sticks to the perimeter play in the finals…. I can’t wait to see Derek Fisher and Rajon Rondo go at it… or Kobe and Pierce/Allen getting tangled.

  • The Philosopher

    @The Promise: Agreed.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

i agree that they are better with hedo.. HEY, why not trade vince to toronto for hedo? hedo wants out of the raps right?.. just kiddin, again hedo is better in that system coz he’s better at creating opportunities for others, and more deadlier in the arc. vc in no way can play point.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

i think the biggest problem is jameer. he’s not steady and not the type who can be the leader on a championship team. too many TOs. same reason francis was bad. he turned it over too much. u can tell he doesn’t distribute it evenly each possession down. too often forcing issues. he’s good when he can shoot over 50%, but that’s really just one career year he had and not his game. howard if used right can still be dominant even though he has no post moves, which he should build up and also his free throws. honestly if he was so hard working why doesn’t he have an array of post moves yet. how hard is it to expand your game when that is your job. have better shooting form. his weird catapult action just makes it so hard when there are so many things that can go wrong. seems like he’s having too much fun and working out instead of putting work in the gym. either that or he’s a real slow learner.

  • http://dallas_beatty@att.net Dallas Beaty

If I was Howard, I would shut my mouth up and learn a turn around jump shot or a jump shot facing the basket. Also it would hurt if he could get his foul shooting in the 70% mark. JUST KEEP your mouth shout and improve your self.
